I'm so glad Mr. Paterson is getting recognition for his work. The things he has done to revolutionize the visual artistry and movement of pop music is beyond words - what's amazing is he's always been humble enough to remain out of the spotlight and let the artists revel in the applause. The Blonde Ambition Tour wouldn't have been nearly the ground breaking show it was without him. He's a very talented and smart man. I wish he still directed/choreographed for Madonna. Her shows since Blonde Ambition have generally lacked a "soul."

Actually Michael Peters was the choreographer that took MJ to higher heights if you watch the 'Beat it' video in which Peters choreographed. Vincent Patterson is one of the dancers.

Madonna met Jose and Luis at the Sound Factory Club in NYC one Saturday night in 1989. Junior Vasquez was the DJ there. Jose and Luis danced for Madonna and that's when she wanted them to tour with her. I believe it was Debie Mazar who had told Madonna about Jose & Luis. I know this because I was there the night Madonna came to the Sound Factory. While she was there she also was dancing with us on the dance floor while everyone was doing the bus stop which she added to the blond ambition show. It's something how that one night at the Sound Factory made so much history. I'm just glad I was there and witnessed it all. All night I was just amazed at how small Madonna was but she is a typical strong leo. I should know I'm a leo myself but alot more humble.😊 P.S. Gautier actually stole the idea of the cone bra from a Ball the house of Extravaganza through back in late 88 or early 89. Which I was also at and John Paul Gautier attended. Some acquaintances of mine walked a category where you had to create an outfit and the best creation won. The people who created the cone bra won that category and the next time it was seen was in the vogue video and in like a virgin blond ambition tour version. Designers do copy and steal designs. 😊 I wish I could've remembered their names who created the cone bra originally!
Nonsense, Gaultier was doing cone bras already in his défilés in 1984/1985 in Barbès Paris, exactly the same shape as the dancers in Like a Virgin at the top of the bed.
The first time she wore that bra was in 1986 in her Open your heart video. In that same video she used images from paintings of Tamara de Lempicka. Around that time she also started collecting her paintings. De Lempicka painted women with those bras in the 1920s - 1930s. Google her painting Young woman in green dress for an example. I always thought Madonna got her inspiration for those bras from those paintings.
Gaultier said he thought of her grandma while designing those conic pieces, and yes, women in 20's 30's and 40's wore some lingerie that made their breasts look in a way like cones, and obviously this was exagerated to recreate, not sure if he made those designs but indeed they became Gaultier signature.
Madonna was fully aware of the existence of voguing since at least 1983, as she was a regular at Paradise Garage, and the Garage was already the haunt of many houses, who came to party every Saturday night. She certainly took this dance seriously, and said to herself that she could do something different with it, seeing Malcolm Maclaren go to number 1 with Deep In Vogue in 1989, a year before her vogue.
Being a young teen gay guy when this all happened was epic!! The hype around this tour, like a prayer and Pepsi ad was phenomenal! Thanks for the insight into everything
I remember Vince in Lars Von Trier’s Dancer in the dark, where he played Björk’s dance/theatre coach for the musical they were rehearsing and I remember what an incredibly sweet and human Vince’s character was. Before that film I knew nothing about him and I think it is wonderful that Von Trier put him as a choreographer in it.

Wow. I was just playing Ofra Haza this week, I felt really sad whilst listening, then I learned she passed. To find out she influenced part of Blond Ambition is beautiful and kind of full circle. This interview is the bomb, I’ve had goosebumps and tears. Thank you so so much. x
Madonna may never have heard of Ofra, but she certainly ripped her off since then.. Her "Isaac" song ripped off Ofra's "Im Nin Alu" and then the LIVE Confessions Tour version mimics Ofra Haza's "Mata Hari" video.. complete with the woman in red in a cage.. Then the whole Kabbalah thing.. Ofra always imbued her later music with mystical elements. So sad she was on the verge of a third come back but went into renal failure due to her SOB POS husband.

The choreographer they "let go" was Karole Armitage, who was more of a interpretative/contemporary dance choreographer than Vince who was predominantly "pop". Also, and not many people know this, at that early stage of rehearsals there were 3 backing singer/dancers - replicating the Who's That Girl Tour set up. But the one that dropped out was N'Dea Davenport (she had already recorded backing vocals on I'm Breathless by this point). And for whatever reason - maybe Vince's idea? - they decided not to replace her, and create a new vision based on 2 singers.
My understanding from listening to Nikki and Donna, she was more of a singer and not a dancer. Nikki and Donna can do both so it just worked using only them two since they are more versatile.
This man is a genius...let's not forget " Kiss of the Spiderwoman" the musical..kander and Ebb. Vincent gives his beauty allowing the artist to glow..he's beautiful with line and punctuating music. X

I absolutely loved this 🥰🥰🥰 in fact I got a bit emotional while watching it and listening to his amazing stories of working with her. What a legend he is and I can only imagine the visionary of both he and Madonna back in that time. She was at the top of her game with the BA Tour and she knew it. Nobody touched her. And it’s thanks to this amazing guy that that tour will never be beat by any artist. It was also my first time I ever saw her live at Wembley stadium. I was 16 years old. Wow, what a time to be alive that was. It still remains one of my favourite shows and times ever and I’m now 50 years old. Nikki Harris was the person who put Vogueing into the Express Yourself routine that was performed at the 1989 MTV awards, long before Madonna had met Jose and Luis. That routine is almost exactly the same as the one on the Blonde Ambition Tour, so Vince Paterson must have really only worked with the extra dancers.

Actually Madonna was not the first to make a theatrical tour concert, that would be Kate Bush in her first and only tour. She was the first performer to have backup dancers and make an entire procution out of it.
The mic wasn’t original - Kate Bush had someone design it for her to use in her legendary “Tour of Life” residency in the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 79, so she was able to sing and dance freely. Kate made quite a few revisions to the prototype.
ACTUALLY… Jose & Luis were friends with Robert in the gay clubs who was best friends with Debra Mazar who was Madonnas best friend… Robert had talked about the two dancers to Debra and Debra told Madonna about what she heard and Madonna went to the club to see them dance… Vogue was written and inspired by Jose & Luis.. which the song samples a few of the “Vogue Beats” used in the ballroom scene battles….. This is the story I heard from my friend Robert and my House Father Jose Xtravaganza..
OMG!!! I NEVER KNEW THAT OFRA HAZA INSPIRED "LIKE A VIRGIN" IN BLONDE AMBITION!!! I loved that version! I was following Ofra Haza since 1991. Madonna has ripped off Ofra Haza three times since then... with "Frozen" and then "Im Nin Alu" in "Issac" and then the LIVE performance of "Issac" as that live performance mimics Ofra Haza's "Mata Hari" video! Ofra Haza was PART of Israeli/Mizrachi music fabric.
Vince seems like a really cool, very talented guy, but I take issue with some of his claims. Madonna has a reputation for saying how she feels, but she's also well known for being extremely professional. I don't think any of her other collaborators have ever described her as anything other than that. His recollection of her shouting at him when they first met makes for a fun story but it sounds like an exaggeration at best. And he claims she didn't discover voguing until the tour auditions, but as far as I know auditions were held in early 1990 and she first vogued at the VMAs in September '89 and wrote "Vogue" in late '89. 🤔
Ya...like, I know Madonna had some diva-like behavior as seen in Truth or Dare. but I have a hard time believing that's really how she spoke to him. When it came to collaboration and the direction of her productions I'm not convinced she was an abrasive and rude sailor spouting F bombs and teenage bratty responses to his ideas. He is trying to stereotype her as this Joan Crawford/cruella villain character . 🙄

What a pity Madonna didnt hire him for one of her later tours. (I know they worked together for Evita, but they never collaborated again). I mean those dance numbers were iconic. Just like the costumes what Gaultier did for Madonna.
Here a very important fact: The first Gautier outing and Vogueing in mainstream pop was contrary to popular believe NOT Madonna! It was the iconic always self-styled Jody Watley in 1983, who wore the early version of the cone bra in her 1983 solo outing "Where the Boys Are"! Jody later wore the same bra top on the cover of her iconic Nr. one hit single "Don't You Want Me" in 1987. Jody started wearing Gaultier when she split from her former Band Shalamar in 1979 and lived in London where she used to visit him literally sitting on the sewing machine selling off his pieces in a small shop in London! Jody was also next to Grace Jones the first female performer who used high fashion (Westwood, Miyake, Chanel and Gaultier) on pop and mainstream shows, stages and music videos! Jody wore the high ponytail and menswear suit before Madonna ("Real Love" video), had her dancers literally dressed the exact same way Madonna did on Blond Ambition one year before Madonna started that tour on live shows, worked with David Fincher before Madonna, worked with NArs before Madonna did in the SEX book, invented and showcased whaacking (pre vogueing dance), did the first wig reveal on a pop stage, wore head to toe Gaultier in her ciconic top 5 song "Friends" in 1989 (She had to fly to Paris herself to get the collection and pay for all expenses since record labels did not pay for fashion on video shoots back then). These facts aren't only important because was a black woman! But also because they should be general pop culture knowledge because Jody was the blueprint for a Rihanna, Beyonce or a (white) Madonna! I know that Jody and Madonna know each other and there MUST be a connection between all these creative similarities. This can't be a coincident!
Yeah, Jody was a pioneer! There was a lot of overlap between what she, Madonna, and Janet were doing at the time. They were collaborating with similar folks and getting inspiration from similar places.

I wish all her fans would watch this and realize that Madonna was not the big genius they all make her out to be. Vincent Paterson invented all those iconic moments that made Madonna such a superstar. I’m guessing a lot of her fans think that Madonna was responsible for everything. And Vincent SHOULD have been in Truth or Dare doc… that was a mistake which I think he maybe knows… he would always have been known as the one who created the show with Madonna if he was in… without him in it people will not know… it was the doc that kind of cemented the legacy of what the show created
would have LOVED if 'truth or dare' captured the initial rehearsals - although sounds like those were already stressful enough without adding cameras to the mix!
It was indeed because of the black saint/Jesus, and the kiss and the burning crosses...it all adds up to the racism and bigotry within the church and the USA. Madonna put the mirror up to these bigoted groups and they didn't like what was looking back at them. The truth hurts!!!

He kept the 3 white fans used in the live Vogue performance until he sold them at auction a few years ago. Someone paid $75,000.00 for the set of 3 fans.
You're right, I've heard him in the past saying Madonna had never danced before he started working with him, which is utter rubbish. He also forgets that the MTV performance in 1989 was the exact same choreography as Blonde Ambition so his claim that nothing was finished is rubbish.
He was the creative juggernaut behind some of the most iconic moments of her career. And she’s never given him credit. This is why The Girlie Show was such a letdown after BA

This is a wooooonderful interview! Such insight into the creative process and the amazing personalities Vincent worked with. Brought back a lot of sweet memories too. I came of age in NYC during the 90s. Those were the days! Thanks for this video -- it's a real treasure!!!
I absolutely loved this 🥰🥰🥰 in fact I got a bit emotional while watching it and listening to his amazing stories of working with her. What a legend he is and I can only imagine the visionary of both he and Madonna back in that time. She was at the top of her game with the BA Tour and she knew it. Nobody touched her. And it’s thanks to this amazing guy that that tour will never be beat by any artist. It was also my first time I ever saw her live at Wembley stadium. I was 16 years old. Wow, what a time to be alive that was. It still remains one of my favourite shows and times ever and I’m now 50 years old.
Its thanks to this guy, this is what happens when two legends and amazing minds work together.

Nikki Harris was the person who put Vogueing into the Express Yourself routine that was performed at the 1989 MTV awards, long before Madonna had met Jose and Luis. That routine is almost exactly the same as the one on the Blonde Ambition Tour, so Vince Paterson must have really only worked with the extra dancers.
I was wondering about that. She also wrote "Vogue" before auditions for the tour began, so I think she must have already met Jose and Luis.

Actually Madonna was not the first to make a theatrical tour concert, that would be Kate Bush in her first and only tour. She was the first performer to have backup dancers and make an entire procution out of it.
The mic wasn’t original - Kate Bush had someone design it for her to use in her legendary “Tour of Life” residency in the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 79, so she was able to sing and dance freely. Kate made quite a few revisions to the prototype.

ACTUALLY… Jose & Luis were friends with Robert in the gay clubs who was best friends with Debra Mazar who was Madonnas best friend… Robert had talked about the two dancers to Debra and Debra told Madonna about what she heard and Madonna went to the club to see them dance… Vogue was written and inspired by Jose & Luis.. which the song samples a few of the “Vogue Beats” used in the ballroom scene battles….. This is the story I heard from my friend Robert and my House Father Jose Xtravaganza..

OMG!!! I NEVER KNEW THAT OFRA HAZA INSPIRED "LIKE A VIRGIN" IN BLONDE AMBITION!!! I loved that version! I was following Ofra Haza since 1991. Madonna has ripped off Ofra Haza three times since then... with "Frozen" and then "Im Nin Alu" in "Issac" and then the LIVE performance of "Issac" as that live performance mimics Ofra Haza's "Mata Hari" video! Ofra Haza was PART of Israeli/Mizrachi music fabric.
Vince seems like a really cool, very talented guy, but I take issue with some of his claims. Madonna has a reputation for saying how she feels, but she's also well known for being extremely professional. I don't think any of her other collaborators have ever described her as anything other than that. His recollection of her shouting at him when they first met makes for a fun story but it sounds like an exaggeration at best. And he claims she didn't discover voguing until the tour auditions, but as far as I know auditions were held in early 1990 and she first vogued at the VMAs in September '89 and wrote "Vogue" in late '89. 🤔
Ya...like, I know Madonna had some diva-like behavior as seen in Truth or Dare. but I have a hard time believing that's really how she spoke to him. When it came to collaboration and the direction of her productions I'm not convinced she was an abrasive and rude sailor spouting F bombs and teenage bratty responses to his ideas. He is trying to stereotype her as this Joan Crawford/cruella villain character . 🙄

who wore the early version of the cone bra in her 1983 solo outing "Where the Boys Are"!
Jody later wore the same bra top on the cover of her iconic Nr. one hit single "Don't You Want Me" in 1987.
Jody started wearing Gaultier when she split from her former Band Shalamar in 1979 and lived in London where she used to visit him literally sitting on the sewing machine selling off his pieces in a small shop in London!
Jody was also next to Grace Jones the first female performer who used high fashion (Westwood, Miyake, Chanel and Gaultier) on pop and mainstream shows, stages and music videos!

But also because they should be general pop culture knowledge because Jody was the blueprint for a Rihanna, Beyonce or a (white) Madonna!
