Day one of the release a random player posted “Penguin Locations”, one of dozens of penguin threads created that day. It was one of the more popular ones. The group of us who came together to try and add some organization amongst the chaos and confusion (this was a huge update in terms of xp rewards) created a new thread the next update and called it v2 to differentiate. I co-authored and then became the sole creator/author on v13. The friends chats came quickly after as we learned more about the penguins and got more organized. Do you have a copy of the big apology forum post by Mod Balance (titled: An Apology) reversing the forum change and admitting that they were wrong? It’s a classic lol. I think you may have missed the actual tweet (not the poll) that I am certain got me demodded, which called Mod Kalaya petty iirc. I didn’t write it, but Jagex thought I did. You are correct that Jagex saw it all as igniting a firestorm against them and they were protecting their people and decision. They even said that in my de-mod message. Pfft what can they do to me now!? here is the quote: -"However we have noticed that further, you have used the information you have shared specifically to create resistance from an existing community, to oppose a change that we were discussing to improve the overall health of the community."- I didn’t create a resistance, I was fully complying. The community had opinions and ran with them (cue pitchforks). Reactions would have been the same if the change had been announced a day before or a day after it was planned. Mod Shauny did eventually acknowledge that they now knew I was not behind the tweet or online comments, bolstering the argument that it was really the fallout and bad press and not the divulging of confidential info that got me demodded. Wouldn’t have changed anything by that point though. Not sure how much more "gossip" you want to hear lol. Don’t want to come across as still bitter, I am not. I accepted the decision at the time and still do. I get why they did what they did. I am proud of the community for standing up, not for me per se, but for calling Jagex out on how they handled the whole mess. It was a Community Mgmt disaster. I enjoyed the addition of pitchforks in the video, it certainly illustrated how things went down! It was a wild ride at the time and it still comes up in game now and then when people return and remembered me as a Mod. At least now I can point them to this vid to help explain all the drama that unfolded. I can say with personal experience that this type of demodding happens. Although they say we are players first, then mods, they get mad if we question any their decisions. Whether we start a discussion in the mod forum only mods can see to discuss something sensitive or we post as players in the regular forum, without stating we are a P-mod anywhere in the post, Jagex reviews what we say and scrutinizes it. It they don't agree with what you say, you are demodded. They can't do anything to me now since they demodded me years ago for quoting their own articles and asking why they said what they said because it contradicted their rules and past statements about the issue. After years of being a P-mod I felt betrayed and angry at them. From then on I decided to not pay irl money for my membership and now purchase in game bonds with gp to pay for it each year. I admit that was the first and only time I actually thought about quitting this game even though I really like it and it is pretty much the only game I really play. Jagex doesn't seem to care or listen to its player base. They have horrible communication and PR skills. They would rather make major announcements on social media instead of on their own site/forum and then don't understand when players get angry because they missed out for not being informed properly. Although I am still playing, many things Jagex does and has done make playing difficult sometimes. Edit: fixed a typo.
I’m bitter on your behalf. Jagex would save themselves a lot of embarrassment if they would just recognize mistakes as soon as they’re called out, apologize and correct them. Instead they always play dumb, and then embarrassingly have to eventually take back their obvious lies, then they enrage the community further, and eventually always have to capitulate to the community while pretending they were in the right anyways but are making an exception or something. The 117 HD mod comes to mind as a recent example of this exact same song and dance. Edit: The Rendi debacle is another ongoing one where they’ve dug themselves in a hole of lies so deep that there’s just no out anymore where they can save face, so they can never come out of the hole and must forever double down further.

But hey, I can now say what I want in game without getting bitched out by Jagex mods. Kind of funny, as I trained pmods to recognize bots for almost two years before I was given pmod status. Plus one of the jmods actually had to message me in game to actually go check my inbox for the invite.

Jagex has a long history of being ignorant, ghosting problems, contradicting themselves and only speaking up when shit is out of control. Randomly demodding players who happen to have different opinions is just the tip of the iceberg. I would like to say that the way they handled this shocked me but no its very much standard for Jagex. Wasn't the first time and sure as hell wont be the last time they will fuck it up, it's tradition and this point.
Yeah that is really the saddest outcome; not much has changed. The community management team has such high turnover that it just keeps happening over and over. The whole situation was a community mgmt disaster that they just kept making worse and worse. It went on for weeks when it could have been a whole lot of nothing if had been handled professionally and intelligently from the beginning.
God this situation is so Jagex. Privately raise concerns about a non-issue to a small section of the community, immediately ghost the conversation, come up with a unilateral decision that pleases nobody and ignores all feedback received, then throw some random JMod under the bus to break the bad news then try to justify their decision. Bonus points if Jagex reverts the decision without admitting fault.

Mod Kalaya jumping on some unimportant arbitrary non-issue, seeking backup from other mods, receiving no attention whatsoever, pushing through a dumb rule alone without any discussion between other mods. Why not just create a new sub-forum for penguins threads? Forum space isn't limited.
It is year 2026, Jagex now revokes pmod and fmod statuses based on user's youtube comments. Typing jamflex in chat leads to instant 1 hour mute. Players have abandoned not only rs forums, but in-game chat due to restrictions and moved to discord mega chat server.
The biggest part of this scandal that bothers me is Kalaya's complete shutdown of ANY discussion toward the topic. "We're making a change that we know you're not happy about, but we are not going to allow you to discuss it because we at Jagex are snowflakes and cannot handle criticism or constructive feedback without taking it personally" - Mod Kalaya, probably. Pretty close to the actual events, she even told us to stop "making a fuss" when we initially questioned it and said players would be upset. She said they would all forget about it in a few weeks. Boy was she wrong lol!

There's way too many different places for players to post on these days. Reddit, UA-cam, Twitter, Discord, etc. There really is no point in overhauling the forums as most players would continue to just stick with the forum they are currently using. Would be a waste of time and money. I believe they should keep them going for the very few people that still use them, but nothing more.

But it's pretty understandable now that people would want to stick with their third party platforms. It's also not necessarily that Jagex puts more effort into third party platforms, more that those third party platforms are well... Third party. They have their own full teams working on everything. Why should Jagex overhaul their forums, when 90% of players don't even use them, and things like Reddit are absolutely massive communities, that will always exist even without the RS forums.

This control can't be done as heavily on third party platforms. If they're gonna censor the current reddits they'll simply open a separate one & continue there. It's easier to silence people if you have absolute control over them like on the official forums but it's harder when a lot of it is in the hands of the community. I for instance wouldn't want to go back to a forum that's heavily censored anymore like the official forums.

Kalaya should have lost her job for this, hoestly - and I'm glad they moved her away from CM. The ONLY job of a community manager is to act as a liason between the community and the players. If she has 0 respect for them, ignores their responses, unilaterally makes decisions without them and treats them with disdain, she proved she didn't belong as CM.

I remember finding the ghost peng in the middle of nowhere. I posted it in w60pengy. Place was swarming with people within ten minutes. Fun experience.
The simple solution for all of this would have been for Mod Kalaya to talk to CanadaGrrl and ask her about what she and her team would require to set up a megathread, like the potential to reorder posts or move older, locked threads to an archive somewhere. Instead, she just caused a bunch of hassle and negative feedback for making a decision that required CanadaGrrl to speak with her team about how to manage the upcoming changes and got her demoded. It's a pretty easy mistake to make, but it does show that she likely wasn't familiar with CanadaGrrl's work on those threads and just made a sweeping decision about how it should be done differently with no understanding of the potential impact. Sounds like pretty normal management procedure to me. :/

I don't understand why people even bother posting on the forums other than stuff like finding penguins. Jagex really doesn't read the forums on their own site. The only way to get their attention is by causing a big uproar on Twitter or Reddit which is also why Jagex has one of the worse Customer Services I've ever seen. This video just proves my point. In the years this went on without "any" complaints is only because the people who it did annoy like other players who were posting in the RANTS section about it went unheard but the moment a Community Manager post in the private mod section its answered lmao. Also to prove my point if you ever have a SPENDING issue involving your credit card your issue is handled very quickly but any other issue with your account and you mise well forget it lmao. My clan has discussions like this as most of us have played the 20 years and have all learned that if its NOT broken, Jagex will Break it.
Nowadays it's pretty easy to find all the penguins on your own with the penguin spy device, but back in the day I used to use the FC and website a ton, (always made sure to update the last seen location if it was different 😀) Never saw much point in the forum thread, since their website was easier to use, but I guess it was good for peeps who didn't want to go off-site for info.

I find it extremely hilarious how we have companies like Riot who deal with sexual abuse law cases for years now, Blizzard who has been on the radar with racism accusations and then we have Jagex who is like we fucking hate penguins lol.
I don't think Mod Kalaya went in with malicious intent, she just saw a non-issue that could be slightly improved. However, the way her and the rest of the Jagex team went about it was messy and unprofessional. Nonsense about "confidential information", demodding a player, the complete lack of respect and regard for the player base, and the power trips... For this reason, voting on polls for in-game content is one of the things I love about Runescape because it gives power to the player base (who fund their jobs by continuing to play), and in a way this upholds a sense of respect for the players in that way. The lack of respect given in the forums by the JMods was gross. Hope they learned, but probably not.
So all this just so that they changed the forum rules back to how they used to be , because Mod Kalaya didn't like seeing 50 weekly threads about penguins? Canada grl needs to have her mod status back cuz mod kalya just made a hissy fit about penguins.... ta.
They should have just given pengs an entire thread fourm alone and let it be. It was basically the only reason people went to the forums for years and if clutter was the issue then why not highlight that part of the community instead of tear it down? Now as far as I'm aware the only reason people go to the forums is for prices on max cash+/rare item trades.
What I don't understand is why locked threads remain on the front page for so long. That sounds like a design flaw in how they implemented the forums, and it should be fairly easy to fix.
The max forums back in the day used to be amazing. Because the community of maxed players was so much smaller on release, that forum used to be filled with niche high level information. This is gonna sound gatekeeper as hell, but that forum has gone downhill as more people maxed and gained access to it.

Man it wasn't until the end where I finally remembered who Kalaya was. I remember the shit show she started over on Reddit popping up for me even though I had stopped playing rs for years at that point.

I’ve never really bothered with penguin chasing, if I see them great but not all that fussed. While watching this videos I logged in and it took me to world 60… wtf?
Balance has always been a big simp and has been known to use his powers for personal vendetta against other players TBH I’d really to see a video on him in the future.
I think Balance redeemed himself a lot once he got separated from the more controversial half, being Mod Infinity. They ran the same fansite together and joined Jagex as a team. Once they received different roles internally, Balance became more of his own person and did a fairly good job, in my opinion.
Jagex mods and, to a point, forum mods are so... Unhelpful on the forums. The in-game roleplay forum stub has been getting trolled, both by its own roleplayers and by bored players massing alts, for YEARS. Every time the issue is raised to forum help, the mods come.. lock the thread, and then go away. They issue mutes so rarely, and the mutes never last long, nor do they cause change. There have been three occasions where a JMod has shown up in the stub, and one time was Matthe asking about what the most popular bar to roleplay in was (nothing ever happened). The other two? Were to lock threads and do nothing else other than say "we love roleplay aha". The company is a disaster. The very high, very impenetrable wall of Zero Communication is so catastrophic, and it would be a godsend for the game's health if that wall were to be torn down, Mr Gorbachev. But unfortunately it won't, because Jagex is out of touch, we're out of time. And we're out of our heads since they're not around.

You and I talked on Twitter a year or two ago about the state of the roleplay community on runescape, and I wound up bailing because I'd come looking for a line to Jagex, and you told me player mods couldn't do that - that the best way was through a documentary, and I gave up for a while after that. But if you'd like to get that way in, then google "Runescape Roleplay Wiki" and our fandom site should be the first result, there's a link through to discord in there. Not every group is connected there, but it's part of the web of people that can get you wherever you need to go.
The way I look on how Jagex works, if 1 person rises to power where 1 cant oppose them, they will feel the power grab without discussion. Decisions being made out of the blue were made by 1 persons opinion. Basically saying "it's not an issue but I see where there is an issue and what I say is for the best whether you all like it or not."
Kalaya looks like the sort of person to talk sht behind people's back but play victim if she gets it thrown back. No wonder she's part of the MTX team.

Don't understand why they did any of this? If your concern is that these locked threads are an issue, can't old ones be moved to their own section? I mean, their leader had fmod status. Surely she could've moved them into an archive while locking them. And if not, give her that option... Compared to some, I am a bit of a noob, only coming up on 18 years since I started playing regularly. I did try the game in 2002, but RS1 ( later Classic ) gave me motion sickness. I have my doubts that they have anyone still working there that was there when I started playing. I, and many others, are playing to escape reality for a while, so crapping on players is a sure way to loose money. Jagex hasn't had any money from me for years, I have played on F2P since 2015, and didn't buy bonds in game until fairly recently.
One thing i always find interesting about these types of situations is how people never assume their own fault either. Jagex is the worst gaming company in the world in their eyes and can do no right. That shit just pisses me off, makes the comunity look like a bunch of cry babys.
Sounds like Kalaya didn't have much to do at work and still wanted to implement change for changes sake. I've been there, but when I made those changes it really only affected me.
Jagex mods are bias. These rules are broken constantly and only enforced when either their hands get pushed or if they have something against the rulebreaker. That is when they decide to be bias and enforce punishments. Its complete bs honestly.

Jagex has a long history of being ignorant, ghosting problems, contradicting themselves and only speaking up when shit is out of control. Randomly demodding players who happen to have different opinions is just the tip of the iceberg. I would like to say that the way they handled this shocked me but no its very much standard for Jagex. Wasn't the first time and sure as hell wont be the last time they will fuck it up, it's tradition and this point.
Yeah that is really the saddest outcome; not much has changed. The community management team has such high turnover that it just keeps happening over and over. The whole situation was a community mgmt disaster that they just kept making worse and worse. It went on for weeks when it could have been a whole lot of nothing if had been handled professionally and intelligently from the beginning.
After all these years, nothing has changed.

Privately raise concerns about a non-issue to a small section of the community, immediately ghost the conversation, come up with a unilateral decision that pleases nobody and ignores all feedback received, then throw some random JMod under the bus to break the bad news then try to justify their decision. Bonus points if Jagex reverts the decision without admitting fault.

There's way too many different places for players to post on these days. Reddit, UA-cam, Twitter, Discord, etc.
There really is no point in overhauling the forums as most players would continue to just stick with the forum they are currently using. Would be a waste of time and money. I believe they should keep them going for the very few people that still use them, but nothing more.

And yea, don't get me wrong, had this been addressed back when the major issues were happening, I would have absolutely agreed with overhauling the RS forums.
But it's pretty understandable now that people would want to stick with their third party platforms. It's also not necessarily that Jagex puts more effort into third party platforms, more that those third party platforms are well... Third party. They have their own full teams working on everything.
Why should Jagex overhaul their forums, when 90% of players don't even use them, and things like Reddit are absolutely massive communities, that will always exist even without the RS forums.

This control can't be done as heavily on third party platforms. If they're gonna censor the current reddits they'll simply open a separate one & continue there. It's easier to silence people if you have absolute control over them like on the official forums but it's harder when a lot of it is in the hands of the community. I for instance wouldn't want to go back to a forum that's heavily censored anymore like the official forums.
Thought if was funny they added this rule when the forums were alrdy very dead. Then they screwed a valued community member.

It wasnt. It was a weak and petty reason they used. Truly it was because they believed I ignited a mob against them, so they had to react in defence. I got caught in the crossfire.
Kalaya should have lost her job for this, hoestly - and I'm glad they moved her away from CM. The ONLY job of a community manager is to act as a liason between the community and the players. If she has 0 respect for them, ignores their responses, unilaterally makes decisions without them and treats them with disdain, she proved she didn't belong as CM.
She got a promotion because she did exactly what Jagex would've wanted her to do 😌👌🏽

The simple solution for all of this would have been for Mod Kalaya to talk to CanadaGrrl and ask her about what she and her team would require to set up a megathread, like the potential to reorder posts or move older, locked threads to an archive somewhere.
Instead, she just caused a bunch of hassle and negative feedback for making a decision that required CanadaGrrl to speak with her team about how to manage the upcoming changes and got her demoded.
It's a pretty easy mistake to make, but it does show that she likely wasn't familiar with CanadaGrrl's work on those threads and just made a sweeping decision about how it should be done differently with no understanding of the potential impact. Sounds like pretty normal management procedure to me. :/

I don't understand why people even bother posting on the forums other than stuff like finding penguins. Jagex really doesn't read the forums on their own site. The only way to get their attention is by causing a big uproar on Twitter or Reddit which is also why Jagex has one of the worse Customer Services I've ever seen. This video just proves my point. In the years this went on without "any" complaints is only because the people who it did annoy like other players who were posting in the RANTS section about it went unheard but the moment a Community Manager post in the private mod section its answered lmao. Also to prove my point if you ever have a SPENDING issue involving your credit card your issue is handled very quickly but any other issue with your account and you mise well forget it lmao. My clan has discussions like this as most of us have played the 20 years and have all learned that if its NOT broken, Jagex will Break it.
Nowadays it's pretty easy to find all the penguins on your own with the penguin spy device, but back in the day I used to use the FC and website a ton, (always made sure to update the last seen location if it was different 😀)
Never saw much point in the forum thread, since their website was easier to use, but I guess it was good for peeps who didn't want to go off-site for info.

I don't think Mod Kalaya went in with malicious intent, she just saw a non-issue that could be slightly improved. However, the way her and the rest of the Jagex team went about it was messy and unprofessional. Nonsense about "confidential information", demodding a player, the complete lack of respect and regard for the player base, and the power trips... For this reason, voting on polls for in-game content is one of the things I love about Runescape because it gives power to the player base (who fund their jobs by continuing to play), and in a way this upholds a sense of respect for the players in that way. The lack of respect given in the forums by the JMods was gross. Hope they learned, but probably not.
So all this just so that they changed the forum rules back to how they used to be , because Mod Kalaya didn't like seeing 50 weekly threads about penguins? Canada grl needs to have her mod status back cuz mod kalya just made a hissy fit about penguins.... ta.
They should have just given pengs an entire thread fourm alone and let it be. It was basically the only reason people went to the forums for years and if clutter was the issue then why not highlight that part of the community instead of tear it down?
Now as far as I'm aware the only reason people go to the forums is for prices on max cash+/rare item trades.
I don't know too much about the situation myself, but the world 60 pengs are heroes.
Another large forum scandal is the manipulation of partyhats on items discussions.
What I don't understand is why locked threads remain on the front page for so long. That sounds like a design flaw in how they implemented the forums, and it should be fairly easy to fix.
The max forums back in the day used to be amazing. Because the community of maxed players was so much smaller on release, that forum used to be filled with niche high level information. This is gonna sound gatekeeper as hell, but that forum has gone downhill as more people maxed and gained access to it.

Balance has always been a big simp and has been known to use his powers for personal vendetta against other players TBH I’d really to see a video on him in the future.
I think Balance redeemed himself a lot once he got separated from the more controversial half, being Mod Infinity. They ran the same fansite together and joined Jagex as a team. Once they received different roles internally, Balance became more of his own person and did a fairly good job, in my opinion.
Jagex mods and, to a point, forum mods are so... Unhelpful on the forums. The in-game roleplay forum stub has been getting trolled, both by its own roleplayers and by bored players massing alts, for YEARS. Every time the issue is raised to forum help, the mods come.. lock the thread, and then go away. They issue mutes so rarely, and the mutes never last long, nor do they cause change. There have been three occasions where a JMod has shown up in the stub, and one time was Matthe asking about what the most popular bar to roleplay in was (nothing ever happened). The other two? Were to lock threads and do nothing else other than say "we love roleplay aha".
The company is a disaster. The very high, very impenetrable wall of Zero Communication is so catastrophic, and it would be a godsend for the game's health if that wall were to be torn down, Mr Gorbachev. But unfortunately it won't, because Jagex is out of touch, we're out of time. And we're out of our heads since they're not around.

You and I talked on Twitter a year or two ago about the state of the roleplay community on runescape, and I wound up bailing because I'd come looking for a line to Jagex, and you told me player mods couldn't do that - that the best way was through a documentary, and I gave up for a while after that. But if you'd like to get that way in, then google "Runescape Roleplay Wiki" and our fandom site should be the first result, there's a link through to discord in there. Not every group is connected there, but it's part of the web of people that can get you wherever you need to go.

The way I look on how Jagex works, if 1 person rises to power where 1 cant oppose them, they will feel the power grab without discussion. Decisions being made out of the blue were made by 1 persons opinion.

Compared to some, I am a bit of a noob, only coming up on 18 years since I started playing regularly. I did try the game in 2002, but RS1 ( later Classic ) gave me motion sickness. I have my doubts that they have anyone still working there that was there when I started playing. I, and many others, are playing to escape reality for a while, so crapping on players is a sure way to loose money. Jagex hasn't had any money from me for years, I have played on F2P since 2015, and didn't buy bonds in game until fairly recently.
One thing i always find interesting about these types of situations is how people never assume their own fault either. Jagex is the worst gaming company in the world in their eyes and can do no right. That shit just pisses me off, makes the comunity look like a bunch of cry babys.
Sounds like Kalaya didn't have much to do at work and still wanted to implement change for changes sake. I've been there, but when I made those changes it really only affected me.
Jagex mods are bias. These rules are broken constantly and only enforced when either their hands get pushed or if they have something against the rulebreaker. That is when they decide to be bias and enforce punishments. Its complete bs honestly.
