The fact that you’re one of the ONLY channels that has this laptop shows that my choice to subscribe here back in 2021 was completely sound. Thanks for making awesome vids all this time
Thanks mate, appreciate the kind words. You know, my very first video on the channel was a t14 way back in 2020, I have a real soft spot for t14’s and thinkpads in general! Got a p1 gen7 arriving later this week, can’t wait to try that one too
@@MashITTechI think the thing that keeps me away from stuff other than the T series is the battery life and performance. It cut deep when I saw that this Gen 5 was worse off on battery life. I’m window shopping to see if there was anything worth upgrading to from my Gen 2 T14S (AMD). Looks like I might just keep waiting.
Got this laptop last week and upgraded it with a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB.
It’s been absolutely killer!
Glad you are enjoying it
How is the battery life on your unit?
finally a video for the t14 gen 5 ryzen edition
Great video! Upgradable and or swappable RAM, SSD, battery, keyboard and trackpad is quite rare these days!
Thank you for the detailed and easy-to-understand comparison video! I have a Thinkpad T14 Gen 4, but seeing the advancements in the Gen 5 makes me want to get one.
glad it was helpful. Other than the battery it is an amazing upgrade
I don't really have standards for laptop speakers, but the fact lenovo puts effort into them is a nice touch
I rarely comment, but finally a mention of the left control key being in the correct position!! thanks! I couldn't even get a clear response from Lenovo support regarding this.
Glad to hear able to help 👍
Thanks a lot for the review, I've been waiting for it! I own a T14s gen 4 AMD and I dearly miss the Ethernet port....
Yes, I exchanged my t14s gen 4 last year to a t14 as I also missed the Ethernet port! I still use it so often and hate carrying dongles
UA-cam recommended me this video, never heard of your channel, looking forward to checking it out!
I WILL buy one in some time, for the school comeback period, hopefully we'll get a deal on this
Thank you for your test. I've owned the Gen4 AMD since last year and it's still the best laptop of my life. I'm so happy with it, it's a great overall package. The battery still holds up, the display is a blast (I use a screen protector and it makes it even better), I voluntarily type on the Thinkpad keyboard instead of the expensive desktop keyboard, I still like the feel of the surface. It's easy to clean. It's absolutely silent when I'm browsing or using office applications.
I think the Gen 5 will certainly be a little better overall, but I'll be using my Gen4 for a long time to come.
Best regards
What about X1? Seems like it's even better
Hey mate, youre probably the first channel to review this model that has been out for months. Very weird that other tech channels didn't review T14 G5 laptops
lenovo dont seem to send out review units which is why the big UA-camrs dont have it and as I always buy the units I review anyway I can choose what I want. Always love the thinkpads and in particular the T series so I always try and cover them
thanks for sharing this specific model, and I actually bought the same one and waiting for it now.
From an owner of 3 thinkpads x1 carbon, i gotta say this is better than the x1 because of the upgradable ram
Man I really considered upgrading from my P14s gen 1 to the P14s gen 5 AMD but instead ended up building my first desktop of nearly equivalent price lmao
I just did. I had (now my wife have) T14 gen 1 (i7) and now changed to gen 5 (ultra 7 155U). And I’m not happy at all. I think build quality was better (maybe this one looks just nicer) now there is some gap on the corners between display and bottom case. When I press bottom case I can hear some noise (clicking). The whole body fell less sturdy then gen 1 (I can see when I hold in on one edge how comple case is flipping). 14:47 Also even when just typeing email the fan kick in 😢. Ok it’s much faster but build quality is going down it’s fells like Chines toy 😢.
Sorry for my English.
@@akiraone28 yikes! Thanks for the heads up.
I have the same laptop and performance is good, but battery life is BAD. I hope they improve it with driver or firmware updates.
Edit: I get about 4 hours of battery life with light usage, 3:30 screen on, 30min screen off. Ryzen 8840U and OLED screen. Tested today with all updates installed.
ah so it Is not just my unit then! I hoped I got a lemon, no idea why it is so bad, the gen 4 was amazing
how about now?
@@WiikLyID The same battery life (4h) with completely updated windows 11 and drivers on 5 September 2024.
@@jozagulikoza1442 so the Gen 4 is still better than this?
2 upgradable ram slot, amazing| My T14 2gen only has one, I still rock 48GB of ram, for me upgradable ram is a deal breaker! Amazing machine that one
yeah, the last three revision had soldered ram, a real shame so its nice to see upgradability coming back
Also half soldered half slot means that you can only double the ram, any more upgrades would result in a much lower ram speed because the two mem channels are not equal
thank you for the great review!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for reviewing this laptop.
Great laptop for work and home office stuff and last longer than most laptops. I still have two old thinkpad and they're still working.
Im happy to see they finally swapped the CTRL button with the Fn. It was the only thing I really hate with this series.
Did you ever figure out if the battery issue was just yours or is it an actual issue with the laptop?
With the new AMD5 out with AI, this will hopefully get discounted as it is old news. Bearing in mind that AI will become a major feature, and if you aim to keep a laptop for 5-7 years, I recommend waiting for the new AMD AI-certified versions. AI may not be compelling at the moment, but having tasted Apple Intelligence, I know the potential is there, and I certainly would not recommend anyone in August 2024 to buy a non-AI machine (Co-Pilot).
Also, having the LPDDR5X superfast 8000Mhz RAM would mean better performance in most tasks, including AI, and I can see why AMD did not want to be second-class and now have soldered RAM in their latest release. The RAM in this is a negative for a laptop you will keep for up to seven years, especially as there is no sign that SODIMM will have that fast RAM as LPCAMM2 takes up that fight.
But if you are happy with these limitations and, most importantly, get a good deal, this is a solid ultrabook for some. But it would be sensible to wait for the new Intel, more AMD releases and the astonishing performant M4 in the next 2-3 months.
Thank you for your video. Please review Thinkpad E14 Gen 6 (Intel edition). I would like to know how is the new integrated graphic card on new Intel cpus (Ultra series). Thanks
why tf would they build it with smaller battery... 3 less hours than previous gen. .. its so dumb
Would be great if you have a comparison between T14 gen5 and L14 gen5.
Excellent review video
Performance drops by rougly a third for multi-core, which is quite a lot for a Ryzen CPU. Was the GB6 benchmark run at the Best Power Effficiency mode or the default Balanced Mode on battery power. Single core performance drops by about 13% which is less significant, but 87% of the performance used isn't bad because lowering CPU speeds to a usable level improves battery life. Something I noticed, but not that overly concerned.
But how is the build quality of this laptop? Does it live up to the standards, like a P14s?
So here's what I like and don't like about it:
a) What I like
1. (Almost) User upgradeable components
2. Slim bezels
3. Plenty of ports
4. Communication bar - improves camera angles (this may cause some hate, but people have their own preferences)
5. Back vent, so your hands don't get cooked
6. Great performance thanks to the 8840U series Ryzen chip, which is also power efficient.
What I don't like:
1. RAM module is DDR5-5600 instead of the LPDDR5-6400, which has slower speeds and may decrease battery life. This can also take a performance hit on the CPU, according to reddit threads (don't know if that holds true).
But my P14s Gen 2 with AMD chip has DDR4-3200 and I get long battery life out of it due to power saving optimisations applied to it.
2. As for battery life, firmware updates may fix these issues. Only time can tell.
3. Price: Almost max specs makes the laptop cost about £1600, but prices may drop further.
What Lenovo could have done instead?
1. Use LPDDR5(X)-6400/7500 memory slot for better performance and battery life. But that memory module needs to be soldered to the motherboard, which makes it NOT upgradeable.
Overall, that's my conclusion of this laptop. Love the reviews, as always.
Zen 5 is going to be a huge step forward for laptops like this. You’re probably going to be upgrading in less than a year. ☺️
Another great and interesting review. Didn't realized soldered RAM gave that much more of an edge! I wonder will Mash IT review the T14s Gen 6 with the Snapdragon CPUs? I suspect battery life on that will be even better, but with a hit to gaming performance
I do want to but I have a mountain of products to get through atm 😀
Finally someone reviewing this laptop. Is lenovo this bad at marketing their products?
Please review the P14s Gen 5 with dedicated GPU
Thanks for the excellent review!
I really don't understand why people kept demanding upgradable ram on a slim machines. Just configure it with the right amount of ram. Second slot ssd would be better. Not losing some of the battery life and ram speed would be also nice.
Battery took the biggest hit from the old CPU being pushed, I think. Zen 5 will fix it
I agree, having bought the gen 4 with 32gb soldered I have never felt I needed more. Plus Lenovo don’t charge the earth to upgrade the soldered ram at configuration unlike apple! The battery life really surprised me, it’s the worst I have got on a Ryzen u series so let’s hope it’s better with strix point
I got p14s Gen 5. Only thing that may suck in future is soldered WiFi. Ethernet is still 1Gbps just as my old 10 yr+ Lenovo and Dell.
This laptop with Zen 5 and a 890m paired with a 1200p 90hz low power display would be perfect.
keeps fingers crossed that they do this!
Now it's released
@@user-mn7id7wc4d Which one
hey David, I have an interesting question for you. If you would have to pick ONE laptop that has been released so far, for travelling (aka a lot of lap use), (light) editing/gaming/dev work, casual use with decent battery life; which one would you pick? You will be using it for the next 2 years at least with maybe a powerful desktop on the side. You can also pick last gen laptops if you want. And a side question: are OLED panels really worth it on laptops like these? I run a 4K OLED 32 alienware but I think Id take IPS on this, I also still dont understand the difference between T14 and P14s. Thanks for the video!
Nice review! But it's a mystery why the battery is only 6 hours. Perhaps, if you get the 100%sRGB 400-nit low power IPS screen, battery life would have been longer, at 60Hz refresh rate at about 8-10 hours. The T14 Gen 3 video that you covered, showed 12.5 hours of endurance. Perhaps there might be some bugs or that Windows 11 comes with too many features or that the cooling solution isn't good enough. These are my assumptions, but feel free to disagree. Anyway, I enjoyed watching the video, but I am glad you are appreciated Lenovo Thinkpads, particularly those with the AMD Ryzen chips because they have better battery life at 20-30% lower power consumption (depending on the CPU).
You can probably configure something in think vantage or using throttlestop to make it consume less power
@@leo_craft1 Of course, but I don't have that laptop! I have the P14s Gen 2 (AMD variant), so I use Commercial Vantage and can set thresholds and stuff.
You can also set Battery Saver in Windows to always turn on whenever your device is unplugged.
For the 24H2 update in Win 11, it's called Energy Saver and does one of these things, if I recall correctly. It replaces the Battery Saver feature that was available in 24H1 or earlier.
You can configure a ton of settings to save as much battery as possible without affecting performance as much, but it requires your time and some knowledge if you are familiar with these.
I agree. Limiting performance to a usable also helps conserve battery life
One more question.
Do you think it can adapt the heatsink version of SSD? I am currently using it for my dell inspiron 14 plus and will use it for t14 gen5 amd if it fits. Thanks.
I was eager to learn how increasing brightness from 300 nits to 400 nits would affect image quality, and whether that also contributed to a reduction in battery life.
The screen is low power and doesn't make a massive difference between 300 and 400 nits. Sadly this laptops battery was a lot worse than the Gen4 anyway
Which one is a better laptop for 3d game? T14 gen 5 or P14 gen 5?
I’m really disappointed with the battery life. Based on your experience, do software updates improve this issue?
Someone did benchmarks with pcmark 10 and a 155u got over 9 hours of office workload with a 45w battery
Made on the thinkbook 16
I am sending this message using a translation tool, so I apologize if any parts are unclear. I also recently purchased a ThinkPad T14 Gen5 AMD. However, the CPU temperature is around 50 degrees Celsius when idle, and the temperature near the keyboard and hinge area reaches 40-50 degrees Celsius. Is this a defect, or is it normal? I would like to know about the temperatures you experienced while using it.
Whats th big difference between this T14 and the X1? Other than the ethernet port?
Mate, we need a review of 2024 G16 OLED w/ RTX 4080 or 4090 (models that have the vapor chamber). I can’t buy that laptop without watching your review for validation lol.
I’ve been watching this channel since 2020 and I remember you pointing out the importance of MUX and advanced Optimus when many laptops didn’t include that feature. I got my 2021 Legion 5 pro 5800H w/RTX 3070 based off your review.
I would really love to but the ASUS range are stupidly priced in the UK and come with stupid specs! ASUS really hate us here :(
@@MashITTech Oh yeah.. I keep forgetting that overseas buyers have nerfed configurations to choose from. Some of them even have IPS displays :(
Do you see this model can accomodate the double sided ssd like a SN850X 4TB? There seems only one ssd model of one sided with 4TB, which is a crucial P3 plus which I prefer not due to its lower performance though.
Hello bro, I am in UK .
I would like to buy a laptop which should i buy Legion i7 with Intel i7 4070. OR
Alienware m18 R2 with Intel i7 4060.
And both price are almost similar £1900.
hello mate, to be fair I would probably take the legion for the better screen and gfx card. Plus the legion is much more portable
Hey man, great video. I am about to get a laptop with good cpu, integrated graphics and not oled screen, but good ips. I am really confused what to get, I want it to be built properly like thinkpad or similar but not braking the bank. I am looking at thinkpad e14 gen6 with ryzen 5 or 7 hs 32gb ram and 512 ssd, the price is great but I dont really know where is the minus there sounds perfect but probably the screen is rubish. Please recommend something having all details I would be very greatful.
Would you pick a Surface Laptop 7 over a T14 Gen 4 for office productivity work @Mash IT? I DO value battery life, a great RJ-45 port, a SIM plus SDcard slot, and a quiet machine but hey, those don't sell anymore unfortunately... Tnx!
Yikes.
Thanks for the comparison! Ryzen AI 300 is on the rise too.
Should I get the T14 Gen5 now, or maybe wait 3-4 month for the new processor generation?
wait for ryzen ai for sure, you can play good games like doom eternal with only 17 watts high settings!!
I'm considering buying p14s gen5 intel variant. It has a 75wh battery and is also upgradable. The amd variant has a smaller battery which is a bummer. What do you think the battery life would be like and even better if you could review it.
But be aware that T14 gen 5 amd has almost NO fan noise at all, even under heavy load. P14s gen 5 intel has a different chassis, but the fans on that one is constantly on and noise level is not good at all.
@@zhz7210 I have been waiting since the gen 5 thinkpads launched but there has been no reviews regarding those laptops. I really want to get the amd version but the battery capacity is holding me back.
the battery on my unit was a real disappointment on what was otherwise an excellent machine. My gen 4 ryzen edition gets over 10hours of battery! I cant believe the soldered low powered ram makes that much difference so maybe my unit had issues
I'd like to get information about the performances with Linux. Furthermore the battery has been tested with the Oled screen, maybe with a different setup it will change a bit.
Sorry, I havent tested linux and with regards to the OLED the battery will be even worse as the OLED consumes more than the low power IPS I was using
@@MashITTech I imagine, so basically is good that we can upgrade the components as RAM especially but the battery life suffers. Maybe the intel version gets better battery life.
Does the t14 gen 5 have a hinge problem notorious to older thinkpads? I read somewhere that you need to adjust the tightness of the hinges in older models to prevent wear and tear from it being to tight.
The problem with hinges was like 15 years ago
I don't really like camera bump.. But, if it's only way to make webcam better quality, i think it's compromise I can live with.
A shame about the battery life. I would've expected it to be somewhat similar to the Gen 4 since the CPU/screen isn't really any different but seems the internal layout choices are what's causing the lower numbers
yes, I have since confirmed with other users that my battery life is the norm sadly. I had hoped my unit was a dud :(
between T X P series which one good for long term to use?
I will take T or P, X is good but usually not upgradeable
Can you compare AMD version with Intel version?
I still have the T14 Gen2 Intel model. What annoys me is the fact that Lenovo blacklists the WAN cards, so even if it's compatible, it may not work.
yes that also really annoys me
@@MashITTech Did you manage to use your previous LTE card from the Gen 4 laptop?
I prefer side vented, despite what the tests indicate.
Can you comment on the T14 AMD Gen 5 fan noise with normal use?
Not talking about gaming.
I didn’t notice any with light use. Only when gaming, installing large programs or heavy cpu use did I even hear the fans spin up
@@MashITTech Appreciate your quick answer.
The reason why I asked was that I read complaints about annoying fan noise with the T14 Gen 5 equipped with the 8840HS processor. I knew the 8840U would do better but I needed confirmation.
Hi im Troy McCleure. You may remember me from the first T14 video 😂. I still have my Gen 1 T14 Ryzen. Whats the difference, is it a massive upgrade? I can play all the games I want to already alongside work and media consumption etc, so I guess not.
hahaha that was my first video ever! Looks so bad when I watch it now 🤣 IT is a large upgrade in CPU and a good upgrade in GPU performance over the years but if your current T14 still performs well I would wait for sure. There is a Ryzen mobile cpu coming next year with a huge GPU increase so definitely wait for that!
What are the main differences between this model and P14s gen5 amd if under the same specs?
The build and design is pretty much the same except you get the HS series of the AMD processors on the P14s, some ISV certifications, an a RJ45 ethernet port. If you don't care about any of that, I would say the T14 Gen 5 is the better option due to the U series AMD processors which won't have the loud fan noise and excess heat issues as on the P14s
Do you think the battery could get longer with firmware updates?
I wanna invest and get the 32GB but that battery vs Gen 4 is trash.
it's not trash and you can tweak it with tlp under Linux.
The battery life is limited by the actual size and internal design choices because the CPU and screen is the exact same as last year's model that has much better battery life. You can't really modify the device physically regardless of how many firmwarre updates are pushed. That's just one of the downfalls of this year's T14
@@adequatequality true but I guess software still has contributions on how it manages the battery of the hardware, so a firmware update could potentially fix and improve some issues
@@peterboil4064 perhaps, but if you're outside and you get 6+- hours compared to the 10+- hours last gen. That's a huge difference, and I can in my own opinion call it trash.
Hows the thermals on heavy load? Does it throttle?
thermals have been great on heavy load. As an example when running a game of dota which pegs the CPU and GPU, this laptop can hold a solid 24w on balanced and 28w on load. My Gen 4 with 7780u starts at 24/28 but slowly drops to 15w/20w over time which is really annoying
Upgradable RAM is definitely a plus
Hey does it have a glowing keyboard for night using ?
Yes the keyboard has a white backlight
@@MashITTech thx !!
Zen 5 maybe 100% soldered ram but at least Windows laptops don't charge a bomb for ram upgrades unlike Apple, if I were to buy a macbook I would buy from a 3rd party retailer, Insight technologies USA has lower prices on Macs than Amazon and best buy
Did the key travel get worse from the last model gen 4?
no, it felt the same
The tests of Zen 5 have left me a little disappointed. But it's on me for buying into the hype build up I guess 😝
I think we are all guilty of that. And it is on the manufacturers for over hyping products (example in point is the snap dragon release!) Hopefully the amd strix halo will be the improvements we are hoping for especially with regards to the gpu
M gonna order t14s gen 5 with ryzen 7 pro but saw some people complaining about the sleep/hibernation issue. Did u notice any such issue?
What issue? I have had no issue with sleep but I don’t use hibernation. The only issue I have had is the poor battery life compared to the gen 4
@@MashITTech oh. should I rather prefer a gen 4? I am looking for all the advice i can get before deciding. thank you in advance
Only if you prioritise battery life. Everything else was better on gen 5 except battery. It has better speakers, performance, upgradable ram better vent placement etc
@@MashITTech how much of a compromise is the battery? sorry if this sounds dumb. significant number oh hours? I also imagine tht ryzen 7 pro has better battery management hence asking
I am getting 3 hours more light use on the generator 4 so it is significant
Hey man! Are you gonna be getting in a P1 gen 7?
already on order :)
@@MashITTech Nice! =]
I'd prefer soldered ram to get two m.2 slots
Most corporate users don't need two SSD slots. Chances of this feature coming to non-workstation models are probably very small
How many things you need to put in a laptop? Soldered ram means no upgrades at all and throwing the pc away when you want to repurpose it or change your mind (personal experience)
Hey Dave, how about you send me one of your unused laptops? I am really in need of a working laptop.
sorry mate, I have to sell the older laptops to pay for the new review units. UA-cam pays very little sadly and it is a juggle to keep the channel running
intel arc igpu now has higher performance only if you get the arc igpu not intel graphics
Wish they went with HX 370 but well, then ram wouldnt be upgradeable. Soldered wifi - bad unless it is intel (right now only thing from intel i would get :D )
what is website's domain at 2:00?
sorry mate, that is just the lenovo website, I have now put a link on the description
Can u review the P14 G5 AMD too?
I have the P1 Gen 7 coming next then I will take a look at it
@@MashITTech Ohh P1 G7 coming next is great too, thank you.
the swap of fn to ctrl is annoying indeed
Core ultras have more or less the same efficiency of amd, though intel has a faster processor and amd has a faster gpu
Core ultras are more efficient than previous intel but I am still not finding them as efficient as Ryzen. Especially at lower wattages
T480 successor
No replaceable wi-fi card though? And no external battery? Not really a T480 replacement.
That’s true but at lease we are heading back in the right dimension. These are easier to repair than last year and we now have upgradable ram. I would love to see batteries hot swappable again though
@@MashITTechTrue, but then there's the keyboard, which is worse than my T25 (which was the 25th anniversary ThinkPad) or even the 6th gen X1 Carbon.
Jesus, dude, please find videos where people compare professional studio sound monitors and learn how to compare two sound systems. You must NOT stop sound on one laptop, then say something, then enable sound on another laptop. This is THE WORST way to compare two sounds systems.
Thanks for the heads up, I will take a look and try and improve it for the next one
my favorite thinkpad is a refurbished one 😂
🤣 Lenovo often have some awesome sales in the UK. I got my T14 G4 for a steal new from lenovo a few months after release
No the advice should be throw it in the bin and buy an m3 MacBook.
haha, I have a MacBook Pro and it is great for video editing but I would never buy one for my on-site client work. Most clients use windows and apps that are incompatible plus I need something rugged with non glossy screen and ports!
I wonder will we get this laptop with amd 9 370h?
