As someone born and raised in BKK, I noticed that many Thais (especially those with Chinese heritage) consider themselves to be of higher status and look down on the lower working class. Many of these include migrant workers from Cambodia, Myanmar, Lao, and even Thais from Isaan. A friend of mine introduced me to her friend, who's from Isaan. Her friend thought I wouldn't want to associate myself with her since I was from Bangkok. However, my parents raised me to have dignity and treat people with respect regardless of their ethnic background or social standing. People are just people regardless of where they're from in the world after all.
Some Thais are racist towards black people showing favoritism towards white people, but still use our culture from Rasta, to Hip Hop, House, to Jazz and Blues. Show all people respect! 💯
If you really want to know whether Thais discriminate against foreigners, you should invite an African, African American, Indian, Chinese. Most Africans who live and work in Thailand do so legally and are very law-abiding. They love and respect Thailand and Thai people. But get discriminated against often and blatantly. I remember once when I was searching for an apartment in Bangkok in the company of my Thai friend. We were told that the owner said not to admit blacks. Most Thai schools would not employ African teachers. In fairness a few do though.

Dual pricing is by definition discriminatory, it’s more about if you feel it’s justified or not. Also it’s surprising to hear you say it’s normal across the world. I’m not sure where else you would have discovered that, definitely not in western world.
Note dual pricing in thailand is definitely based on ethnicity and origin rather than residency status, no matter what they might sometimes claim.
As a Westerner I observe many Bangkok folks ( especially Thai-Chinese ethnic group) seems to feel superior to others - especially towards people from Isaan.

I have all too often overheard fellow Thais use derogatory terms referring to dark skinned foreigners thinking they wouldn't understand. This includes airport staff. Thais abroad thinking no one would understand what they are saying would also commonly make racist remarks in conversation.
I am married to a Thai and constantly get charged more as a foreigner, it's disgraceful. In England we have a price not a dual price. The people on the show are talking about discrimination 55555. Stop your dual pricing first then tell us how discriminated you feel.

Thailand is campion discrimination. Everybody who is not Thai get openly discriminated.
With dual pricing in Thailand, discrimination against Thai people in other countries is a good lesson for Thai people.
Dual pricing is NOT in every country...if we did that in my country and a many other countries, then you would be called a racist, you would be on the news and your shop would be ruined...just because it is clearly so normal and "standard" in Thailand, do not mean that all other countries do the same...i never support dual pricing, i always walk away. It is a matter of principal for me...on another note..that guy that say "like...like....like" every 5 seconds is realy bumming me out...if i had to listen to him a whole evening, i would go..like...crazy

Dual pricing is just another word for ripping people off. I went to repair a motorcycle they told me 1200 my wife's cousin took the bike they said 260. They just want to steal from foreigners and if the foreigner walks away they'll be another one along in a minute.

I can’t imagine what it’s like as a young woman with foreign friends in Thailand. People assume what they assume, and a lot of it can be pretty hurtful, and degrading. It’s one of those things where one can’t really see things changing without society itself recognizing the ill it causes.
It breaks my heart to think of what it must feel like to be a young, professional woman walking with a foreign person, and for someone to make an assumption that is really the opposite of what you have worked, and struggled to present, and reflect to the world.
The only thing I can come up with that would help is women speaking about it, and how it makes them feel.

Well done Natty the chat is becoming more relaxed and open episode now . As a person who lives in Jomiten in a Thai community and have a long term relationship with a Thai lady who happened to be born in the Area. I knew nothing of Pattaya before I visited the area, I dislike that Pattaya has this reputation as only a small number of people who work in the sex industry . From were I live I am in walking distance of Tiger Park, The Floating market and Dolphin shows .. Nong Nooch and the Sanctuary of Truth as well as the Buddha temples ... These areas need to be promoted more by the Pattaya Tourist board, telling This is the real Pattaya, rather than the Sex industry promoted by volggers . My lady works in Central and finish late, many times tourist men talk bad to her as she waits outside to come home . As a western man in a relationship with a Thai I don't want to be stereotype and neither should she, I have known my lady 2 years before I came to Thailand.
Thailand has a lot more to show the world than sex & now weed ...I for one will be telling people that .

Dual pricing is DISCRIMINATION.
Actually, I have found the past 5 years that Bkk taxis are usually OK. I say "meter, meter," and point to the meter when I open the door BEFORE I get in. Almost always they say yes and turn on the meter. And when you look at your smart phone with audible gps calling out the best directions to your destination, they all know that you are aware of the best routes. And yes, I give them a decent tip.

Times have changed. Taxis very rarely will use the meter...or they'll use the turbo meters to scam you 😅

Vendors ARE selling products at different prices based on being local or a foreigner. That IS discrimination..
An asian woman travelling on their own, on a quick trip to another asian country, especially from Thailand is cause for alarm and whilst not the norm, it's possible the individual is travelling for prostitution or a drug mule. Whether you call that discrimination or racial profiling is questionable BUT its more than not "just" in relevant authorities asking 20 questions (you say "interrogation") to confirm or negate suspicions of one theory over another. It may be more rare for a single Thai woman to travel abroad for a weekend holiday than you think. You consider the norm, then weigh up suspicions based on the nationality to costs & affordability on whether the trip may be lawful or otherwise and the traveller being financial enough to support themselves no matter how long or how brief. The only sure way of knowing are questions.. This happens EVERYWHERE.. Its NOT discrimination.
I have a Malaysian female friend. She & family went to Australia for a holiday. Carrying a back pack, she went into a popular exclusive store. She left after entering briefly perusing clothing. She was stopped on her way out and packpack checked. She believed she was being discriminated against due to her ethnicity. She couldn't bring herself to accept signage on entering and exiting that customers bags may be searched upon exit as a condition of entry over "discrimination".
Asians in general discriminate. They even discriminate against their own countrymen. Its largely cultural as having a class structure system of community down to the family structure. Thailand is the same in this regard, possibly worse as residents in the city of Bangkok discriminate and view Thai's from rural areas poorly. I can say this as my wife is from a rural area, raised in a poor family and I've witnessed "educated" city Thai professionals treat her appallingly..
Asia & Thailand needs to dump the class structure it models itself from and learn to treat all people equally and with courtesy, compassion, dignity and respect. So much for being buddhist..
I know I'm sick of my 10 year old half foreign son telling me daily of older kids at his school picking fights with him simply because he is more white than asian in appearance. He speaks, reads & writes fluently in two languages that these ignoramus cannot. The treatment he experienced every day here, is discrimination.. Just a shame school authorities do NOTHING.
Tell your son, when he gets older the women will flock to him. He will also have a huge advantage in careers being bilingual
i am aussie, live in aussie and have had my bags checked numerous times on exiting stores. if youve nothing to hide- no big deal. not discrimination , just security. ask your malaysian friend how many stores didn't check her bag
While it's true that racism exists everywhere, the majority of people who are openly discriminatory are usually raised in a lower socioeconomic class, less educated, less cultured, less read, and overall less intelligent.
Dualpricing is NOT everywhere. I didn't;t see it in Europe.
as a farang that speaks ok Thai, when i go to a market i like to eavesdrop when Thai buys from the vendors to get a grip on the prices, then i start to bargain in English and if necessary i switch to Thai....

The dual price isn't in Europe atleast not in the contries i visit, a thai in my country is as good as someone in my country when we speak about paying for something.
Racism is in Thailand, one motorcycle taxi two times nearly drive me down in krungthjep, was easy to see on he's face why, also i hate if i stay in a shop waiting to pay for something and a thai come and goes in front of me so he can pay before me, he will never do that if i was a thai and i have other expenses, when thats said then i think its very little amount off thais who is racist, the dual price i also meet in a dentist clinic, when i enter i begin to look on a paper with prices and one woman quickly come and said no no that's wrong prices this one is the right one and she gave me another one.

I was staying on pharam 4 with my wife, suddenly she became angry and i nothing understood, i asked her what was wrong, she said that a woman was looking on her as she was a prostitute, come on, it really piss me off, that people have such thoughts

I have been watching this channel for a while, when I saw the title of this episode, I thought this should be interesting. Well I think you completely miss the point on such a critical topic. The real 'Discrimination' exists in Thailand but none of the participants are likely to experience it. I think you get confused about concepts such as Discrimination, stereotyping, exploitation etc. The can all be positive or negative but completely different concepts. Please read Neil Thompson. Put a black or Indian person among the participants and listen their stories about being refused jobs, entrance to venues, people holding their noses, and everyone refusing to seat next to them and rather stand on the train etc, that's another story right?
Even 7/11 has dual pricing. They have a card that is only for Thai people. Yes this is discrimination. Most small Thai business owners do not try dual pricing if they know you are living in Thailand. Anyway I just walk away if I think they are trying dual pricing or discrimination.
That is one of the few areas that it exists in the west. Companies all over the world have loyalty programmes which are only open to residents of their own country. Actually, the 7/11 one in Thailand is one of the best, in that you can just enter a friend's code so that person receives the points when you shop.

This is a very enlightening story. Unfortunately, classism and racism are prevalent in every country and community. Parin's approach (self confidence, patience and courtesy) to counter discrimination outside of Thailand is the best approach. Oh, using English in France can be a disadvantage 😁

That’s a weird thai thing i still don’t really get. My condo security guards are very lovely and always offer me help. As a little thank you, i ordered pizza for all of them. One said: but we only guard. Do i have to look down on them or what? 🤣

I lived in Thailand as a young man. I had many mixed relationships with Thai people since I am white American. I think Thai people are really good at discerning if a Thai woman is a "working girl" based entirely on the way she speaks Thai. Normal Thai women don't sound like hillbillies. I don't say that to be mean, but it is pretty easy to make a class distinction on Thai accents. I can speak Thai and I really never felt discriminated against and I lived in Thailand for 9 years. After so many years and speaking the language, you get a vibe for what is going on underneath the surface. Maybe it was my age and the way I dressed. The culture has changed so much. It was not typical to go out looking like a slob. I dressed as if I respected the country and I got respect in return.

Because I am non Thai I must pay 5 times more to play golf and forced to use an expensive caddy - I have stopped playing golf as hundreds of other westerners- so who loses the most !

racism of any form is bad, however it is always good to clean up your own house first. thais are pretty racist to south asians, middle-easterners and black people as well. if people know what it feels like to be demeaned, why do they do so to others on the first place?
When I was walking with my Thai girl friend, note that she's my age and a school teacher so we're not talking about me being a foreign sex tourist exploiting a young Thai woman, we're both middle aged and sensible dating adults, yet still when we were walking around Bangkok waiting for a rural bus we passed a market car park to use a paid toilet where there were a lot of motorbike taxis wearing high vis vests over bike leathers, who repeatedly surrounded us and kept asking her to get on the bike with them and clearly didn't like me at all, I actually had to put myself into fight mode and hold the stares some were giving me for fear of appearing too easy a mark, whilst she was politely refusing the ride they kept offering her to get her away from me. My guess is that if we hardly knew each other and they did entice her away I would've been mugged and beaten, it was that kind of atmosphere. On the street, 9 times in 10 the appearance of racism or bigotry is actually a crime setup or an excuse for violent predisposition and thus complete misdirection. It's an intimidation tool. You should be too busy watching their hands to think about it or take it personally.
But generally speaking I saw far more aggression and allusions of violence from western tourists than anyone else in Thailand, a few thousand times more but I don't think anyone should kid themselves that locals aren't capable of it if they want to. Also, locals can be legally armed in the provinces and there are plenty of pistol ranges and gun shops around and plenty of illegal guns trafficked in the region, Europeans should keep in mind anyone could easily be armed there pretty much like they would be in the Americas and Middle East so it's probably a real bad idea to do anything but avoid trouble at all costs, lest you find yourself bringing fists to a gun fight.
In this particular case I was lucky to have a mature, smart Thai girl friend with me, who I've known for about three years now but if I was with someone unfamiliar, immature or on my own I never would've walked into that area so never would've met those guys. Worth remembering that violent criminals are not sports competitors trying to win a battle with an opponent, they are opportunists. All you can do is try to minimise their opportunities and they won't exist for you. Don't get drunk in public unless you have friends to look after you, don't go down questionable backstreets on your own or with someone unfamiliar, don't get in arguments with people trying to goad you into compromising yourself, where you can it's best to stay within a group, it's just a whole bunch of mature common sense that applies all around the world.
If you are travelling on your own there are some things you simply must accept, such as the reality that you are an easy target for violence and criminality by default, so there is more work involved than if you were with a group of friends or family, unless you're responsible for them and they're all a bit hopeless. That work isn't an enemy however and the threat of what may be is not an enemy, nobody is the enemy and it's worth remembering. Racism and bigotry is a paper tiger, it's not even the point if it happens that you face it. Power, vulnerability, making a mistake, mundane criminality, it's always really about those things. Nobody has ever punched someone because they're racist, it is always them being racist because they want to punch a person, violence is the point, not philosophy.
That's not to say you can't call someone a racist if they use racism as a tool or proxy, but for your security pull its teeth out and recognise that it is not genuine, that aggression upon the innocent has no rationale nor excuse and is never about racism or bigotry but is about victimisation of anybody who crosses that person's path. Do not let it be a blip on your radar or else you will miss the cues that you need to see to keep you one step ahead of serious harm. The time to say, okay that's sincere racism is only when it is institutional, like a law or policy which discriminates ethnicity and that never has violence involved unless you get aggressive being offended by it first, it's just stupidly arrogant but mainly just hurts your pride or won't let you use a toilet or something.

Great job as usual Natty!! As a farang I feel more judged in Bangkok than Pattaya. When I go to Emporium or Paragon alone to shop, the ladies working in the shops give me that "I know why you're here" look. But overall Thailand is the most awesome country! Keep crushing it Natty :)
I never had that experience, mostly i am treated nicely when i near thai women.
Normally also with thai men but i have some experience that i really not like

As a farang (USA) who has lived and worked in Thailand on and off since the early 90s, permanently since 2004, I have encountered very few instances of discrimination. Language is key. Thais appreciate farang that can speak Thai and I always appreciate Thais who can speak English.

strange observation: Was in Bangkok(patpong area) and tried to enter a bar that seems alive and plenty of folks and seems like a good vibe. I tried to enter a narrow alley where the venue is located, and suddenly a bouncer approached me and asked me to pay 400Bhat---huh? This bouncer also told me that this particular venue is a GAY BAR. Ok, I consider myself bisexual, so why not enter and explore....afterall, this is the land of free-loving gay pride nation. I was baffled why he would ask me to pay 400bhat? while he was in front of me----he casually waived every WHITE MEN entering the bar, but he insisted I pay the entree fee---while more and more WHITE MEN enter without asking to pay anything. I have a light brown color--typical of Thai looks, but I was still asked to pay a fee.....while more and more WHITE MEN old and young are able to enter without hassle. Has anyone experience this behaviour by THAIS? For me...this broke the camel's back....the last straw. I LOVE THAILAND...but this sounds and feel like RACISM.
Being a prostitute should not even be seen as something bad from the beginning. It is a job like other jobs. Seems like many Thai women are so scared of being seen as a prostitute. I think this is just disrespectful towards people who work in that industry. To fix discrimination in Thailand, I agree with the guy in the interview, we should start with ourselves, stop discriminating each other first which also includes paying respect for everyone regardless of their job, status, intelligence, etc.

I have a Brazilian passport which actually gets 90 days straight away on visa exemption and the thai immigration, although always kind, they bombard me with questions but because I have a business was always been able to prove my means to spend 3 months in the country.
Interesting, I also have a Brazilian passport but never experienced any questioning on Thai immigration. I probably look more Asian than you 😅

I think it’s quite common all over the world .duel prices from taxi drivers.
it's a mindset and learned behavior. for instance, watch the news or commercials, look at the script and characters (demographics) used for selling which products; there's racism in plain view. now who owns the rights to commercials, tv shows, movies and their scripts? it's probably going to be thai owned, as they mostly will have access to state-controlled media, entertainment and funding; so that's where your racism originates in thailand. thais can be truly harsh, as mentioned, to others living, working and contributing within the land of suppose smiles.
Getting ripped off by Thais is common as is the YELLOW and GREEN TAXIS ripping off farangs. (My personal experience).
Also, I, as that FARANG being told by a Thai lady she couldn't sell me fried bread as it was "SUPPOSEDLY" for Thai people. (Blatant discrimination!)
A good point about bananas being Baht40 for Thais and Baht 100 for Farangs.

When I walk the street as a farang with my (younger) Thai gf I feel people (Thai and farang) watching and somehow judging the way Natty describes her experience. We are used to it meanwhile and really don’t care anymore. But yes, it’s a typical stereotype unfortunately.

Stop discrimination against south Asian they are very successful in the world compared to you guys 😂 when you come to ferrang country you get discriminated more than what is expected so stop trying to please ferrangs not everyone is rich lolz
In central Bangkok taxis don't use the meter most of the time, for both Thais and farangs. This is because the traffic is so bad the meter will not give them what the driver thinks is a fair price. So you have to negotiate the ride. This is true whether you are Thai or not.
Discrimination in any form is the product of ignorance in the best case scenario and sheer hatefulness and stupidity in the worst case scenario..
Certain Foreigners are asked for the same documents when entering Thailand, Return flights, reservations etc. It becomes discrimination when applied unfairly or with prejudicial distinction.
It is applied prejudicially. I've often caught flights to Europe and the USA via Asia and have watched Asians get grilled for minutes at immigration at first world countries and then had the officer say as little as 3 words to me and let me through. For the example given here, Korea, I'm pretty sure they didn't ask me to prove anything.
Why is it that a thai wife can own property without the husband on title. Automatic pre-nuptial agreement. Go figure? While during the pandemic period. Big asian investors were buying commercial properties.
Do any of these three work for The Thaiger? Are all three fully Thai, I ask that because the one with glasses did not look like that.

Last year Dec. 2021 I was in BKK, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi and Phuket (Patong). And it was curfew. Only in Phuket there was a night life. I recognized when its no tourist area or no night life, no thai and no thai woman interested to you:-) Its everywhere in the world the same.

I went one time with some thai and I said I will only pay thai price. After some haggling in which I said now u get no business. So she said speak some thai. I did and then she said oh I guess you do live here. Ok ka. Same same thai price.

Taxi drivers rip off tourists in every country. Anyone who disagrees, didn’t leave his or her mom’s basement. Second, dual pricing would have been unfair if 1 THB = 37 USD. Westerners complaining about dual pricing as discriminatory are either too broke or freeloaders. Third, racial profiling is in every country. For some nationalities it’s even worse. Fourth, there’s no overt discrimination in Thailand towards foreigners. In fact, western tourists with fair skin are kept on a pedestal in Thailand. Theres a reason why bald fat old white dudes get pretty thai wives. However, there’s covert discrimination against some people of specific disposition and nationalities which is quite apparent in the way you serve you in bars or restaurants or elsewhere.
Dual pricing is factually discrimination, because decisions and treatment is completely based on appearance linked to ethnicity, including against westerners that work and pay tax in THB 🥴 embarrassing how wrong you are and shameful how underdeveloped your mind clearly is. Thailand is one of the most racist countries in the world, about 50 years behind Western Europe and even more behind with gender equality

I've experienced some of what you're saying, mostly to my benefit, since I "look" Thai (and speak a little) even though I'm American (Hawaiian/Chinese). I'm annoyed when I see "farang" treat Thai women badly, sometimes I correct them, sometimes you can't fix stupid!🙃
The altitudes that ive heard from others as a white expat who lived in bangkok for a year was often grossly derogatory at times towards Thai women, yes obviously there is a sex industry but for me that doesn't excuse frankly embarising low IQ attitudes towards those that work wiithin it.

Yep, expect dual pricing. Usually all places give about 20% off if you can show a local driver’s license. This is a very superficial form of discrimination hardly worth mentioning when comparing to other more damaging forms of discrimination, racism and prejudice. Single women go through more immigration attention than an ugly man because of international prostitution and human trafficking, duh.
