A simply brilliant track played to perfection 👌🏻 Nevertheless I had to play around with it and do a short rendition: enjoy! ✌🏻🤩 ua-cam.com/users/shortsBXELRPzYxUk?si=a12uAg74DniDW1d6
He's allowing the song to breathe!! Love the progression. Not over playing the song. With more young lions could hear how tasteful this sounds without the overplaying. Great job Rodney!!!
I wish there was a love button, or a "I want to drum like Rodney Holmes" option. Wow, he's just amazing. A few years ago he was all fire and brimstone, but lately he's just laying the tastiest and most musical grooves.
I learned a lot from playing with and listening to the late great Ricky Lawson. He “played the song” instead of making the song about his abilities. I see that same quality in you, Rodney. Although I know you have chops galore, you “play the song” and make the listening experience something it should be....felt! And what I really dig is that you bring that approach to fusion. Well done 👍🏾.
I love Rodney's playing, and I have to say this is a great-sounding ensemble of cymbals. It's a relatively small setup, but he's got a good variety of non-overlapping sounds that all work with each other. I'd be happy with this setup.
What I appreciate about his playing is he seems to always have the song in mind, and only plays what serves the song, but still manages to corporate little bits of subtle details. Making odd time signatures flow like this is very difficult.
That droning middle portion of this song was entrancing, the melodic repetition really got me in a way that doesn’t often happen. And damn does that ride and hats sound good. Curious how much such a ride costs. Been a Rodney fans since I saw that wild cowbell lick from the old Meinl Festival from years back. I still play that groove every now and then if I wanna show off... I’m sure I do if wrong and it still sounds/looks cool.
One of the last few drummers of that era that has serious chops but knows only when to interject with them tastefully! Brilliant ! Thanks to Meinl for this HD video showing Rodney in all his glory !!!
Check out the CD "The Color of Dark" from the late Clyde Criner with Rodney playing drums. The late Victor Bailey on bass, too. Came out in '89. Good stuff
not a drummer, but I kept feeling, waiting for a release to snare on 2&4, just for a bar here and there. of course it's valid to not do that and just let the tension be. that's why he's the artist.
Great...Tasteful playing as always!...In '99 I was lucky enough to share a bill with Rodney at The Bitter End...Not only did I get to see him play up close and personal, but he was kind enough to chat with me at the bar for a few minutes about his gig with one of my musical heroes Carlos Santana...Great drummer and great guy!...Thanks Rodney.
Rodney's drumming and music is himself.. sounds like him.. and I've listened to him since his last solo album.. riding in the car for years listening to it.. he has mellow lofi vibe.. and I dig it greatly.. Would love to hear victor Wooten with him.. and maybe a jazz woman singer.. Guthrie govan.. I would be happy to hear that lineup
Verses alternate between a measure of 10/8 and a measure of 14/8, and then the “chorus”is 14/8, correct? Beautiful song and drumming. Rodney is a beast.
I count it as 5’s & 7’s (and then 7’s on the chorus). Beautiful track, I had to do a short drum rendition: enjoy ✌🏻😅 ua-cam.com/users/shortsBXELRPzYxUk?si=a12uAg74DniDW1d6
FUCK YES!!!!! all you matched grip guppies TAKE NOTICE my man Rod coming through letting ya'll know ANY body can do it "matched" but yet ya'll welcomed to "match" his traditional lol
In this world of chopsters in drumming- Rodney, you’re a breath of fresh air
it just feels good. I love this track and his approach.
Absolutely agree. Sick of chops. Lovin the groove and feel. There's plenty of time for a chop here and there.
Groove > Chops everyday of the week.
Absolutely!

Rodney, love your 'vibe' and relaxed concentration, bruh... much peace

Dang. That was incredible. Love the pocket grooves and playing the composition with unheralded wisdom and poetic structures. Nice! Deano
This jam is nice to listen at work. I’ve been coding for about 20-30 mins with it in the background and sounds killer
Rodney you are a legend.....love your drumming 😁
What I appreciate about his playing is he seems to always have the song in mind, and only plays what serves the song, but still manages to corporate little bits of subtle details. Making odd time signatures flow like this is very difficult.
this guy is amazing, very cool, perfect beats, and most importantly very musical...
Amazing drummer and cymbals
I gotta say this felt amazing to watch and listen to as well
Fiery and tasteful. Very nice.

So comfortable; very fluid; good definition of flowing like water. Amazing.

2:48 DAaaaaaaaamn!!!
Believe it or not that fill was one of the easier parts of this composition... With a double kick and enough coordination that is. What a drummer
Love this tune. Reminds me of early Jan Hammer.

Handy ride work
Just competent drumming. A real pro.
Sounds great.
fuck. such an incredible drum sound.
Rodney understands, it's the space between the notes.

God damn I love this guy. So musical. Does anyone know which album this is from?
The snare!!!!!! What model is it?
That Ride😍
This would sound next level with a saxophone or trumpet accompaniment. And that snare is godtier
Set them up for the kill at 3:20ish
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Yeah... So cool.
The Rhodes keyboard and Rodney go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Dude needs to cut a new album with these tracks. Stat.
Mature grown ass man playing the drum...Love it...
This snare sound can’t be real.. 😭

Those are some beefy sticks. Anyone knows what model they are?
I think they are Vater 5Bs from what I could find
@@__julio__ According to the Vater site, he uses Los Angeles 5As and 5Bs
