This is the first drummer that really wowed me when I first heard him with Steve Kimmock. There have been others since but Rodney is just so ferociously smooth with constant manipulations of the groove. It’s fantastic can’t believe more people don’t know about him as well.
One of the last few drummers of that era that has serious chops but knows only when to interject with them tastefully! Brilliant ! Thanks to Meinl for this HD video showing Rodney in all his glory !!!
Check out his playing with Santana on the live Supernatural vid. He's amazing in it. And I know it's not a competition but, he made Carter Beauford look like a novice. ;)
💯% accuracy in ratio assessment, you can tell that he has the ability to do plenty fills if he wants to but understands the importance of establishing a deep groove /pocket for the tune to settle down into,... GOOD STUFF RIGHT HERE !! 😉
Agree with both of you, those are my favorite type of drummers. I think Steve Smith in Journey is a bit like that. Overflowing with talent and skill but keeps things tight and classy and will kill it when he needs to.
Rodney!! Legend!!! First time I saw him playing he was Santana's Drummer back in the early 2000's The first Meinl Ride I fell in love with was his Signature Byzance Dark Spectrum Ride 22", I had to sell it in order to move to the states :( but then I got it again when I became a Meinl Artist. Such a great Drummer and a great Ride!!!!! glad to see him finally in these Meinl Sessions !!!
I got hip to drummer extraordinaire Rodney Holmes when he was playing with a jazz fusion band called special effects in the late 80s, early 90's. Victor Bailey was on electric Bass, the late Vance Loving on Electric Bass. Michael Bearden on keyboards. Then he was gigging with the Brecker Brothers Band for many years. And guitarist Mike Stern.
Rodney is so musical and has a wonderful groove. Yes he has chops for days, but uses them sparingly. Listen to the Santana song “smooth”...that him on it. Now you know why it sounds so darn good!
Wow, what a superb recording - Sounds fantastic Rodney! His signature cymbals are my favourite of Meinl! His performance at the Modern Drummer Festival years ago actually brought me to tears! This guy is full of passion and talent!
That was Phat. SO nice to hear one of these vids where it's not like the guy is trying not to wake up a baby asleep in the same room. Or is allergic to playing the snare on 2 and 4. Those kinda vids bore me to tears.
Mr. Holmes has a beautifully clear, precise and consistent way of playing !! It is awesome to listen to him play everytime. He is such a nice guy to talk with as well. Very humble a true professional!! The cymbals sound great as well!!
I’ve got Meinl, Tama and Evans. Rodney is making me want polished floor boards and a fire place too. Absolute, pure unadulterated talent on show here.
5 років тому+1
Rodney is a very talented drummer and his sensitivity makes him a drummer very above the average. I'm his fan since I saw him playing with Santana and I'm glad to see him drumming on this video.
Ohhh gossshhhh, that snare sound is dialed in just perfectly! And the mix sounds so full, punchy and juicy! Of course, Rodney's skill plays a huge role, haha.
Thank you MEINL for not just always putting in great work on the audio, but video as well! Always beautifully lit and a great mix of visuals. Give that visuals team some love!
Deep in the pocket! I thought the snare sound matched the music perfectly...loved the way he used the ride cymbal towards the end to compliment the rhythm guitar.

snare drum is a tama slp g birch limited edition. it is 14x6.5 size and is 11mm thick birch shell. die cast hoop on top and triple flange on snare side. when it was sold it was about 300 bucks. it has 45 degre edges. it is one of the best sounding snare drum i have ever heard. at any price range.
Rodney H. has been around!!! Want "OTHER?" chops from him?....Look him up, it's just that simple! ...Great, respected, AND "KIND" player....I met him MANY years ago.
@Tom Dobie, one of the many definitions of a professional, is someone who can make something difficult /challenging LOOK as if it is easy /simple to do,... SIMPLE ?.... SUCH AN UNFORTUNATE CHOICE OF WORDS (not to mention waaay off the mark) 🤔
Anybody know what snare that is? Holy shit. I'm head over heels for this song right now, everything from the playing to the sound is superb and the song is just so damn sick.
The criminally underrated Rodney Holmes.
I couldn't agree more !! Awesome talent! I just could have left a thumbs up, but I had to type it !
His fills never disappoint,...with steve kimock...I really dug there stuff...

True!
Simply one of the grooviest and best drummers out there! Legend.
This guy always plays his own way. Pure class and style. Musicianship galore.
One of the last few drummers of that era that has serious chops but knows only when to interject with them tastefully! Brilliant !
Thanks to Meinl for this HD video showing Rodney in all his glory !!!
Jazz rock meets electronica fusion as only Rodney Holmes can do it! Love the song, and the drumming is so clean and musical from start to finish.
I’m almost disappointed I didn’t know of Rodney’s playing. Flawless, musical and effortless playing. Real deal right here! I’m hooked!
Hey man check him out on the 2005 modern drama festival hes great
Check out his playing with Santana on the live Supernatural vid. He's amazing in it. And I know it's not a competition but, he made Carter Beauford look like a novice. ;)
God, I love this song. Such a killer drummer. I keep listening to this over and over.
Me to Chris, you not the only one Man. Yeah Rodney is the kat.
Love listening and seeing Rodney play. Notice 90 / 10 pocket to fill ratio people!! That equals gigs!
💯% accuracy in ratio assessment, you can tell that he has the ability to do plenty fills if he wants to but understands the importance of establishing a deep groove /pocket for the tune to settle down into,... GOOD STUFF RIGHT HERE !! 😉

It's always such a treat to watch and hear Rodney play!
I had no idea Rodney had a signature series! How did I not know this?? Meinl is always taking such good care of their endorsees🙌🏼
One of my favorite drummers. Rodney is an incredible musician. The song reminds me some Ozric Tentacles sound ❤️ Awesome!
Refreshing to hear a smooth groove oriented performance instead of the over-the-top chop filled vids.
that's exactly what i was thinking
Exactly. I love chops, but enough already.
thank you for choice of these words. sometimes i cant describe what im feeling. that was it.

Ikr?? I've listened to this track over 10 times ever since I found it.
Me too
Very classy! Letting the song breathe while adding a little flavor. Very nice!!!!
Props to the sound engineer! Sounds incredible in my studio! And that kit is amazing 🤘🤘
Every instrument in this mix sounds amazing in my headphones.
That was Phat. SO nice to hear one of these vids where it's not like the guy is trying not to wake up a baby asleep in the same room. Or is allergic to playing the snare on 2 and 4. Those kinda vids bore me to tears.
Rodney sound is fire.
Rodney Holmes rocks. Seen him live a few times. Great great drummer

Funny, I thought it sounded splatty.
@@Whiskel it sounds thin and paper flicking to me
I don’t know but it didn’t look like he was playing that bass drum during those flams
I liked that snare sound as well!
@@Whiskel ah, there are always those who don't like something) Opinions, opinions
Mmm getting some Porcupine Tree vibes with that riff around 00:43. Loving this. Killer musicianship.
Taste + masterful playing + great sound = Rodney Holmes
so grateful to have had a one on one drum lesson with him! fantastic drummer
Incredible sound quality in this vid! And Rodney looks so comfortable and controlled while playing!
Since he got recognised at drumeo i believe this guy groove is amazing, and his ryhtym very well balanced with the chops 👍
Nice tasty and not overplayed. Solid meter and great Dynamics. Time to hit the kit while this is still in my head!

Wow, solid drummer! 👌 Pocket for generations.
Deep in the pocket! I thought the snare sound matched the music perfectly...loved the way he used the ride cymbal towards the end to compliment the rhythm guitar.
Alot of people will hate it as his keeping it simple and grooving and no this is what you want it's great
So much finesse and musicality! I can listen to his drumming all day
Cymbal work at 2:10-2:20 is wonderful!

His groove on eudomon inspired half my drum ideation and notion of fluidity. I hold him in the highest esteem.
An amazing drummer, I hope we will see more playthrough in the future!
So smooth awesome to watch
I have a Clyde Criner (RIP) CD "The Color of Dark" from 1989. Rod has had it goin' on for a while.
