Today we're taking a looksie at UA-cam's 2012 reality competition show "Internet Icon", starring Ryan Higa, Chester See, Christine Lakin, and a bunch of guest cameos from other UA-camrs. The premise of the show was for contestants to make a video every day under a time constraint while following certain guidelines. I'm not sure if the show did a very good job of showing what it actually takes to become a star on UA-cam, and I'm not sure that they necessarily found the most talented people to compete, but it was still pretty fun to watch.
Admittedly, I may have been a little too hard on the show in this video. Early on, it was easy to find things to poke fun at and make jokes about. But as I kept watching, I was brought back to my teenage years and the feelings of inspiration and drive that this show gave me 8 years ago. It got harder and harder to goof on because I was actually enjoying the experience. But at that point I had already put like 15-20 hours of work into this video so I figured I could still make SOMETHING out of it. I hope it doesn't feel too cynical.
I also understand why Andy was such a Grinch the whole time - he was the executive producer and had money on the line. I would probably be stressed and grumpy too. And Christine, although fairly out of touch with UA-cam, DID do her best at critiquing and trying to help the contestants improve. So at the end of the day, it's all love for everyone involved :)

Early on when I was making this video, it was easy to find things to poke fun at and make jokes about. But as I kept watching, I was brought back to my teenage years and the feelings of inspiration and drive that this show gave me 8 years ago. It got harder and harder to goof on because I was actually enjoying the experience. But at that point I had already put like 15-20 hours of work into this video so I figured I could still make SOMETHING out of it. I hope it doesn't feel too cynical.

Anyone remember when Ryan, Felix, Smosh, and Jenna marbles all judged the finale together? Legendary moment.
This comment makes me sad in a way because it shows how temporary everything is online. Ryan hasn’t uploaded on his main channel in months, Smosh broke up and Jenna has left youtube indefinitely because of mistakes from the past that some people can’t forgive today. Felix is still here and is going strong, but media companies like the ones that made this show won’t touch him with a hundred foot poll unless it’s for a hit piece on him. It’s extra sad to me because I only got into youtube in 2013; when the era of the individual was nearing its final chapter.
This is embarrassing because clearly a lot of people know who “Felix” is, but I have no clue... I know Ryan is Nigahiga though.

Honestly, I'm glad Anthony left, the work he's doing on his own channel now is so important and meaningful, giving a platform to marginalized and misunderstood groups and working to promote empathy and understanding.

I don’t think she know what UA-camrs do. What part of big UA-cam is storytelling and will make them highly successful. UA-cam is a free platform and you can do what you want.

Worked in production can confirm we broke plenty of props and gear. I even did a show at LA Center Studios and we definitely broke stuff there.

There's a blooper from the first Harry Potter movie where the kids break one of the book props and nervously just put it back. If they'd intentionally been destroying everything just for the LOLz, that'd be one thing, but it was an accident. That guy had a big bug up his butt.
@@FrenkTheJoy It's one thing to be strict about making sure your employees and prospective talents get things right, and it's another thing to misrepresent the industry as being a lot more 'flawless' than it is, which not only sets too high a bar for the content they want to create as future 'internet icons', but also gives them an unreachable goal post that might just further discourage them from progress for film-making or content creation in the long-term. And that's just with the "we don't break things in professional productions" comment.

I flew out for internet icon. I was in the intro wearing a Georgia Bull dog hoodie. Little fun fact, we waited like 10 hours on a sound stage to get through 20 out of 100 contestants, just to be told to come back the next day.

This reminds me of a filmmaking camp I did when I was twelve. There were two groups of seven people, and one group of five (that was my group). A camp counselor was assigned to each group for filming and supervising. We were allowed to go across the grounds of the church it was at, which also had a playground. It was not a competition. The films were bad, for the most part. Our film was a parody music video. That was a fun experience.

Same here. It’s clear that Instant Influencer and Internet Icon were inspired by the same type of show. Though one could argue that Instant Influencer is a lot better, especially since it takes itself way less seriously.

As a huge fan of Ryan and Internet Icon when I was younger and a current huge fan of yours, this was just a joy to watch throughout. Thank you for always putting a smile on my face!
I remember watching this show when it came out. If I remember correctly, I do believe the second season was of higher quality. And one of the contestants on that season (Will Pacarro) ended up joining Ryan's production team later, so that's pretty cool.
