I think this was so well presented and as a former teacher, you hit all the points. Your course goes in depth and even though I am experienced with gouache (all types), it was fun to make a few paintings esp the cloud one. I like to think of using acrylic gouache as getting the same look (the opaque matte look) without all the complexity of regular gouache and being so careful to lift up layers. It's great to use acryl gouache when I want that look and am lazy hehe. But when it comes to blending right on the paper, nothing beats my w&n, holbein or m. Graham regular gouache. I've come to hate himi lately bec I want what I want now and I can afford the decent paint and paper. I do however disagree w you when it comes to the in-between. There are a few brands like mijello white class, shinhan pass and paul rubens opaque watercolors that really exploit the best of both worlds more than traditional gouache or acryl gouache. You can use those as either watercolor or gouache, but they try to hit that in between note and achieve it even better than regular or acryl gouache bec they are specifically made that way. They are slightly less opaque and water soluble, so you can get to the watercolor side easier and to the opaque side, you need an additional layer. They are also more artist quality paints than himi. Great job tho'
I completely agree about multimedia paper - it might as well be labled "bad at everything," since it's trying to be everything at once - at best, it's not horrible. The only one I like at all is the Strathmore Visual Journals and they are cheap.
It's like 2 or 3 in one shampoo! You can't condition your hair with the same stuff you use to clean it and expect a good result :D
@@VisualMind Agree about the shampoo as well! I should clarify that Strathmore is cheap in the US, but probably not in Europe -- and not worth seeking out! And they make more than one Mixed Media paper, but the visual journals have 100% cotton that's unsized. The A5 size has 34 sheets and is only like $8.50 USD. It can handle water, but does not blend like watercolor paper. But it's fun to paint in visible layers on it, like ink and wash. I need to give the gouache a try on it, I think it might work well for practicing/working out ideas!

One lesson I value from my drawing/painting professors was to start with fewer colors, not more. But I have never used Gouache, so I am a bit intimidated to start and I can see why beginners may be lured into purchasing more affordable paints with more colors, vs more expensive paints and fewer colors.

I love your painting style. What kind of pallet works best with gouache? I used a hard plastic and cannot clean the paint off
Thank you! It depends on whether it's traditional or Acrylic Gouache. Traditional gouache should be fine on any glossy surface like plastic, ceramic etc. but might stain a bit (you can't really avoid that).
Acrylic gouache needs either some type of "keep wet" palette or something that you can throw away afterwards like a plastic tin or glossy magazine. I find that acrylic gouache is almost impossible to get out of a palette and I've definitely ruined my fair share of plates and palettes with it. So don't put it on any surface that's worth anything to you 😂
Is Hot-pressed or Cold-pressed watercolor better for Gouache? Or what are the differences that may help me decide.
Hot press will grip the paint less, so it might slip more and warp a bit more. Cold press will grip the paint more, so it may be brighter or thicker with cold press and less warping. It depends on what you prefer or trying to achieve. For really loose watercolor I love hot press.
I have some 200gm watercolour paper on hand, will that work? Or is there no point trying - & and should I just try and get some better paper to begin with? Thank u 💘💘

Thank you so much forall these tips. You're actually the reason why I decided to buy Gouache paints! I have a question though, for some odd reason, my paintings seem to get crusty and turn into dust that disintegrates after quite some time. Could it be because of cheap gouache (I use the tubed Himi but not the jelly) or am I just using it wrong? I tried different techniques already (less water, more water, equal parts) and I'm using watercolor paper. But yeah after a few daysm my painting just starts disintegrating, it's so frustrating! Hope you can help.

Sounds like a paint quality issue to me! Try different paints and see if you still have the same issue. It might not be anything you're doing.

I also heard in a vid by jess karp that you can also use acrylic gesso to make gouache adhere to the paper better
Gouache adheres well to the right kind of paper. If you're forcing the medium on the wrong surface then gesso can help - but it won't fix all of the issues :)
So do you use watercolor brushes with gouache?
Yes but cheap ones usually since gouache is rough and eats the bristles over time 😅
What's the difference between acrylic gouache and acrylic paint?
Acrylic gouache is matte, dries soft like gouache and therefore looks more like gouache. And as far as I've seen it has a thinner consistency while still being opaque which makes it easier to get thin lines :)
I used a mixed media paper and I hated it straight away. It behaved so badly! I have Himi Gouache and I assumed Mixed media paper would be ideal, but I was wrong. Even cheap watercolour paper was easier to use. Do I need to use 100% cotton paper to get the best results?
Depends on what you're going for. 100% cotton will give you the option to get some watercolor effects with gouache :)

I made a dry pallete with winsor newton gouache and made the mistake of drying them without adding glycerin, they cracked. They rewet very well though... ALSO the intro set includes ZINC WHITE. I thought it was titanium white... 💀I scraped it out and put titanium white instead. I don't think gouache is for me, but maybe acrylic gouache might be a bit better.
Does is matter that they crack on the palette? I tend to always mix in fresh paint with the dried ones because wet paint is easier to use. Zinc white is better for mixing, titanium white is more opaque. Both have their pros and cons :) acrylic gouache has a similar workflow as acrylic paint but it looks more matte and soft like traditional gouache
@@VisualMind It matters when they fall out of the well cuz super dry... oh well. lol I know the differences between zinc and titanium, I just didn't realize the one in my palette was zinc. I was wondering why it wasn't very opaque. I might try acrylic gouache next. I don't like how gouache reactivates the color below and I find it much more difficult to work with than watercolor. 😛
Why would one use acrylic gouache as opposed to regular acrylic paint?
It's matte and soft and looks exactly like traditional gouache in the finished piece. It's usually easier to control and have a nicer consistency than acrylic paint :)

printer paper is only good for quick pencil sketches, paper is one of the most important things with most mediums
