A big problem with live anthem singers is they don't know the difference between a song in 4/4 and 3/4, so they completely botch the American anthem and it sounds absolutely terrible. Actual musicians often understand, and can play well, but tons of performers aren't musicians and don't understand the difference.
The Star Spangled Banner is an extremely difficult song to sing... most people don't realize it because they either sing it in a large crowd of people, or softly to themselves. Consider the range between "Oh say can you see..." and "...for the land of the free...". Most people don't have the vocal ability to cover that range. And 99.9% of Americans don't know that the version they're used to hearing at sporting events is only the FIRST verse...there are alot more words, most describing very violent scenarios!
@@klmullins65 The Star Spangled banner requires a two octave range. A two octave range for men and women is common. The Star Spangled Banner was written in the key of Bb major, and most singers sing it in the key of G (the most popular key for many genres) for comfort reasons. If you start off the song in a familiar key and at a lower octave of your register, there really shouldn't be much issue hitting the notes towards the end. The most complex parts of the anthem require good vocal control during the longer notes and being able to feel the 6/8 or 3/4 time signature. When professional singers struggle to sing it, it more often has to do with choices they made that made the song harder to sing to hit those upper power notes. In the end, it's a song that's as complex as you want to make it. If you aim for a range and key that's comfortable for your voice, it isn't all that difficult to nail. But obviously singers want to show off a bit too haha. People are use to hearing it in a "pushing the limits" kind of way hence why people think it's extremely difficult to sing. But it doesn't have to be sang that way. Jack Black's rendition is a perfect example. Didn't overdue it, sang in a range that's comfortable, and nailed it.
@@calebhohneke8482 Yes, but its not an easy song to sing if youʻre NOT a professional, or at least a talented non professional. Bresth control, and singing songs in the proper pitch in order to nail the whole song…those arenʻt techniques that your average person consider when singing a song. Iʻve been a musician for decades, and i now struggle to sing along with hymns at church now, because I run out of breath before i can get the words out, especially Episcopalian hymns. Im not a trained musician, but i am a talented instrumentalist, and iʻve had a “decent” voice, given the right material. Imo, our National Anthem should be simpler, and more folk-based….”This Land is Your Land”, “America the Beautiful”, “God Bless America”… any of those songs would be better, plus theyre not about bombs and rockets, and slaughtering Red Coats. I picture a song that kids could sing along to, and enjoy doing it
@@calebhohneke8482 Jack Black has a very powerful and bombastic voice, and even if he kept it toned down properly, his is the kind of voice that best fits The Star Spangled Banner
21:20 We have to give Collins... His drumming made Jimmy Page drunk and out of tune all while making Plant sing like he was at a karaoke party! Those drums had magical powers!!! 😒
I never got why he received quite so much stick for it. Its obvious Page’s guitar is out of tune, and Plant isnt match fit. It wouldve been bad no matter who drummed.
Haha, you said it.Nothing wrong with the drummers and it wasn´t that awful performance overall.Page had a poor work ethics already in 70´s.Good musician but not much of a man, blaming others.
On top of that they ask Phil Collins to play the same day while he was playing the London Live Aid. He had to fliy to Philly and didn't even have time to learn the songs. To make thing worse they "forgot" they had already invited the Chic drummer who had actually learned the songs, so they ended up playing with two drummers one of whom didn't even know the songs. Totally surreal.
Milli Vanilli DID NOT RECOVER! their career was over after this concert, and Rob Pilatus drowned in alcohol and drugs, and died in 1998 of an overdose.
Rosanne Barr's performance should be higher. Her performance was unconstitutional- cruel and unusual punishment. Fergie's performance was poor embellishment choices. Rosanne Barr's was an inability to sing.
I was physically present the time Macy Gray attempted to sing the national anthem at the hall of fame game and it was an atrocity that makes all of these look professional and smooth.
@Supasmartguy No, There Was No Announcement Everyone Wanted It To Happen And Just Got Pissed Off When It Didn't... I Love SpongeBob And Stephen Hillenburg But We Can't Always Get What We Want And It's Time The Haters Stopped Blaming The Super Bowl For Not Doing What THEY Wanted
The American National Anthem is extremely hard to sing publicly, except by singers with a wide vocal range...it starts low, and ends on a very high note... try singing it out loud when you're alone some time. "America The Beautiful" would make a much better National song, one everyone is capable of singing
Every time I think about her I feel really sad. She was considered a joke during most of her fame because she couldn't stay sober and it eventually got her.
@@gregarmstrong6077 The only sad thing about her story is that neither her family nor her friends could or wanted to really help her. She was gone way before she finally died.
I kind of felt for her. I've sung onstage before and it's trippy how you literally can't hear yourself unless you have an ear piece in feeding your own voice to you. It caught me off guard so bad! So if her ear piece wasn't working she can't hear herself sing at all.
Her new years eve performance was a technical problem & she didn't really sing. The following year she more than made up for it with an acclaimed, highly rated performance. ❤🎉😊
@@dhsaunders4185😂😂😂😂😂😂😂....the next year the person in charge of pressing the bottons was paying more attention...😂, without her prerecorded vocals she just can't perform.
The Led Zeppelin Live Aid performance was ATROCIOUS! Just a train wreck. It's interesting to see THAT one against The Who at Live Aid, which also was plagued with technical problems, but they pushed through just playing their hearts out despite the screw ups. The Who salvaged their set while Zeppelin fell apart. There is a video out there going over all the viewpoints of that mess where everyone, I think, takes a share of blame, but some got dumped on harder than others, unjustly so. They had no rehearsal, Plant's voice was gassed, and they just had no synergy. Collins was paired with another drummer that I don't think he enjoyed playing or working with. It was not going to work out AT ALL!
Whoever asked Roseanne Barr, a non-singer and a comedian - to do the national anthem - they're the ones to blame for the whole performance. You ask for Roseanne, you GET Roseanne. And is anyone surprised that Kanye West can't sing without autotune?
The worst concert I ever went to was The Beach Boys, and I was STOKED my dad got us tickets! But because a storm had been predicted, they kept “waiting for updates” for FIVE FREAKING HOURS until they finally canceled it-and we all got stuck in traffic, and the storm, and the floods, with no bathrooms or places to take shelter because everything was closed. Had they just done the concert on time, with the scheduled set, we all would have been done and out before the first raindrops fell. 🙄
7:11, "Gimme More" performance by Britney Spears, even with vocal difficulties and the fact that she didn't sing live, is still one of the most iconic VMA performances of all time. This is especially true if you watch it after knowing what happened to her.
When are these singers going to learn that they will NEVER be equal to Whitney Houston's version at the 1991 Super Bowl and Marvin Gaye's version at the 1983 NBA All-Star game. And even Whitney Houston said that she was inspired by Marvin Gaye's performance to do the arrangement she did at the Super Bowl. The rest of these artists need to just sing it straight as intended because only those two people have added style to the anthem it and it worked. Stop trying to updo the anthem. We have Whitney and Marvin's, that's good enough for us. 🤷🏻♀
@@dhsaunders4185: because it was a requirement, there were jets flying over the stadium, imagine the sound that makes. She sang it fully live in her show Welcome Home Heroes and she sounded amazing. For the Super Bowl she did it in one take and they recorded and extra take just in case. Whitney's was the best ever regardless.
The fallout was so bad, one of them self-deleted. I was shocked to see them come up in the list, then notice that there were 5 more "worse" performances to follow.
I just wanna give some form of credit to all the musicians that was on the drug train in the 60-90s and still could deliver fantastic live performances even though they had amounts that would kill anyone else in their bodies

Wait. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Kesha’s performance. Because you think there was too much going on during it? Okay… that’s a matter of opinion and it doesn’t make it bad. She’s an entertainer. She entertained.
Not fair. Ashley Simpson (while completely untalented and unworthy of stardom) did the same thing that Michael Jackson did during “the greatest superbowl halftime show of all time” according to half of you.
It's amazing how many famous singers can't actually sing when singing is supposed to be their thing. I don't like Mariah Carey, but this was not her fault and 100% a technical issue. She couldn't hear herself sing in a noisy environment. It would have been like trying to sing pitch perfect when you're in the middle of a crowd at a rock concert when everyone else is singing.
Saw Dylan at the Mann Music Center in Philly in the early nineties. He and his band were the headliners, played 5 songs at double speed and left. All told they were on stage for about 22 minutes. That was a bad performance!
Most of todays "singers" use autotune and they lipsync any live performances. Its not surprising that the majority sound awful when they actually go live but thats a rare event nowadays
I'm surprised you guys didn't mention Ingrid Andress singing the national anthem at the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby. She admitted a few days later that she was intoxicated while singing and announced that she was checking herself into rehab

My god stop putting all the immediate blame of Led Zepplin's Live Aid reunion to Phil Collins. Jimmy Page himself has said the other drummer (not Phil, sorry don't know his name) wasn't fully aware of all the songs, such as coming in a whole round early in Whole Lotta Love. Jimmy was on horse tranquillisers and Robert Plant's voice was so horse because this was his 5 show in a row after 4 back to back solo tour performances.
They shouldn’t even have tried to play Whole Lotta Love without Bonham - his way of playing and timing was integral to that song - to most of Zeppelin’s songs actually. The sound was just awful and I felt badly for a band that I loved.
Rubbish! You are talking about Mitch Mitchell! He knew the songs. He rehearsed with them. His drumming was perfect! Phil, on the other hand said himself, that he asked Robert if he could play with them. He had no rehearsal and did not know the songs. He wanted the limelight and the Concord and recognition for playing at Wembley and Philly for his promotion of No Jacket Required!!
@@mjuza7114 🤭🤣🤣🤣 Oopsy! My mistake!! Yes!! Tony Thompson ha ha! At least I chose a name with alliteration too. Well, they respected Tony and invited him to play. Jimmy never had a problem with him. Phil on the other hand... asked to play, and he hadn't rehearsed. Of course it wasn't all his fault, but you can clearly see in the clip that Robert goes up to Phil to try and fix the off beat. Of course Phil stuck around backstage for the interviews blabbing about himself. Tony disappeared. JPJ left most of the talking to Robert, who, yes promoted himself too... meanwhile Jimmy stayed quiet, pretty sloppy, probably ashamed and just went along with it all. Anyway, thanks for the correction! I've shamed myself too!!😉
Yall got Fergie way too high on the list. That wasn't even the worst national anthem. Now Ingrid Andress, she should be #3. Or maybe even number one. Hers was legitimately BAD!
this list is indication of today's culture of music consumption. The fails based on lack of talent ended up at the end of the list. But those that are statistic anomalies and bad sound engineering are mostly at the top, those fails usually happen when you tour and play and rip your throat and fingers every day, but the better you do your craft the easier it's for the crowd to see a difference.
they did rehearse but not with Phil on drums, i believe originally Jason Bonham was supposed to be drumming but it didn't work so they were left with Phil who allegedly told them he knew their songs but obviously didn't.
@@neonwired4978 Oh Phil, ya dummie! Phil is a great drummer but without rehearsal it's not gonna end well. Robert's voice was not good either though at the time I was just excited to see Zeppelin on stage again.
Mariah Carey actually handled a disastrous situation in a fairly professional manner... if youre on air live, and you can't hear the music you're performing, there's the likelihood that you're going to miss your cues, or sing out of sync with the musical accompaniment, and make things much much worse... she stayed calm, and winged it... it was either that, or storm off and throw a fit! Performing one or two songs in a live broadcast with limited time restraints is a nightmare for any musician, and this is why most music on tv is pre-taped at best, or lip-synced more often than not
Back in the 90's I went to see Oasis in Portland OR at the Roseland, it was not long after their first debut had came out. Weezer opened for them, great show. Oasis comes out, half way thru the first song the lead (Liam) tosses the mic down, walks off, not sure why but he was mad about something. His brother finishes the song, then the entire band walked off and never came back, show over.
Poor Ingrid Andress singing the Anthem at Homerun Derby 2024. It was so bad, and even sadder, to find out she had been struggling with alcoholism and checked into rehab the next day. I hope she is doing better.

@@mmsiphonevinyls1027 Agreed. This "reunion" never should have happened in the first place.
They all thought they were super stars who didn’t need to practice. They would just get up and blow everyone away like it was 1975.
How about Jane's Addiction in Boston a few weeks ago.🤦♂️
Imagine blaming Phill Collins for your bad performance lol
right. I am going to say I doubt that was the problem.
Lana Del Ray sounded fine to me.😊
I thought she sounded way better than the studio recordings.

The Kesha performance was pretty fine. She sounded good!

She's showed herself to be much crazier than that recently
The American National Anthem is extremely hard to sing publicly, except by singers with a wide vocal range...it starts low, and ends on a very high note... try singing it out loud when you're alone some time. "America The Beautiful" would make a much better National song, one everyone is capable of singing

Not as bad as her new years eve performance.
@tylergoodman3560 You should watch the American Idol worst performances, they're also bad but I find them rather funny.

Milli Vanelli did not " return " their Grammy. They were ordered to return it as well as being eliminated from Grammy winners.
Nails on a chalkboard don’t even start describing how bad Fergie’s “Star-Spangled Banner” performance was. Even I could do better!
A great shame that Led Zeppelin tried to blame Phil Collins for their own disaster.
NEVER throw your bandmates under the bus. NEVER.
It made Ashlee Simpson look unlikeable as well as untalented.
The bad Led Zeppelin performance at Live Aid was absolutely not Phil Collins's fault.
Whitney lip synced, as all super bowl performances are.
Faith Hill was good too.
You gotta be kidding. That Pistols show is one of the best Live performances
Singer: completely fails at US anthem. Team Canada: courteously helps her off the ice.
Carl Lewis’ National anthem at a 1993 NBA game definitely deserves mention.
I thought Milli Vanilli would be higher on the list. That performance led to the end of their career.
To be fair, they never had a career in the first place. I seem to remember they were dancers, and/backing singers at best.

No...either you sing or don't.
Not fair. Ashley Simpson (while completely untalented and unworthy of stardom) did the same thing that Michael Jackson did during “the greatest superbowl halftime show of all time” according to half of you.
Ashley was famous because of her sister. Who, as proven by the Noxzema/Proactive slip-up, didn't have an ounce of brains or talent either.
It's so sad to see Lana's performances prior to the SNL show, she was much more comfortable with herself😢
MTV did Britney dirty😢
That outfit was dirtier
I didn’t see a thing wrong with that Lana Del Rey SNL performance. That’s literally how she sings.
Fergie's performance of the Star Spangled Banner was bad, but Roseanne singing it was worse
Screeching, not singing
Big difference, Roseanne is not a singer, never been 😂

Saw Dylan at the Mann Music Center in Philly in the early nineties. He and his band were the headliners, played 5 songs at double speed and left. All told they were on stage for about 22 minutes. That was a bad performance!
This is what happens plans when you need to rely on auto tune kids!
Would like to hear a bit more of the vocals !
Most of todays "singers" use autotune and they lipsync any live performances. Its not surprising that the majority sound awful when they actually go live but thats a rare event nowadays
Milli Vanilli is the norm now with most all bands. They were just ahead of their time.

@@instantkarma8777 LOL Mitch Mitchell:)))LOL...Other drummer was now late Tony Thompson

I've shamed myself too!!😉
What are you trying to say?Jimmy didn't need to be on horse tranquillisers whilst Robert because of his horseness needed to be
Yall got Fergie way too high on the list.
Jimmy Page blamed their substitute drummer for Zep's fuckup?! No, they didn't rehearse, that was the problem.
they did rehearse but not with Phil on drums, i believe originally Jason Bonham was supposed to be drumming but it didn't work so they were left with Phil who allegedly told them he knew their songs but obviously didn't.
Performing one or two songs in a live broadcast with limited time restraints is a nightmare for any musician, and this is why most music on tv is pre-taped at best, or lip-synced more often than not
Seems like the common dominator for the demise of these “artists” are their performances on Saturday Night Live. Just saying.
