Tuning the Honda Civic Type R with Hondata and Bolt Ons! Baseline & Custom Tune Dyno Results

- Our client Danny brought us his FK8 Honda Civic Type R to put it on the dyno and get some baseline power numbers stock and with the Hondata Flash Pro OTS Mapping. We also had OnPoint Dyno do a custom tune for the vehicle stock to compare to the OTS mapping. We found the OTS mapping to be aggressive for our fuel and we were able to make the same power with less boost. Post baseline numbers we installed a Takeda Intake, AFE catted downpipe, and Invidia Catback Exhaust to remove some of the restrictions of the OEM components. We also installed a Koyo Radiator in the car to improve cooling efficiency when the car hits the track!
We put the car in the capable hands of OnPoint Dyno after the installation to dial in the tuning for the new parts and we saw some great increases in power over the baseline numbers. We also identified what was holding back the car from making it's peak power. These items included fuel quality and charge air cooling primarily. The vehicle came in running 91 octane which is okay for a stock vehicle but we strongly advise running 93/94 octane for any turbocharged modified vehicle. The charge air cooling can also be improved with an upgraded front mounted intercooler as the ECU uses charge air temperature to adjust the tuning quite aggressively. If we can keep the charge air temps lower we can make more power for longer.
Baseline Stock Dyno - 272WHP & 312WTQ
Baseline OTS Hondata Mapping Dyno - 295WHP & 345WTQ (24.5PSI
OnPoint Custom Tune No Mods - 295WHP & 345WTQ (21.5PSI)
OnPoint Custom Tune w/ Mods - 310WHP & 364WTQ

"There it is the quiet purr of the exhaust," as the music plays over it.
Super informative video. Sashas breakdown on lowering the boost makes complete sense.
Can't wait to slap this tune on my Accord.
it started off with 270 WhP and now 310 Whp, im highly impressed, honda never disappoints 🤗🤗
Drooling during this video! Really want one!
I’m starting to save up for one right now. My end goal is to pay it off in full by 2021. I’m screwed but I’m also Asian so I got this.
Jhezryl Gundran I’m so tempted too. I’ve got an absolute mint facelift ep3 with only 50k on the clock. I’m really thinking about letting it go to put towards a deposit on an fk8
From what we have observed these cars are really fantastic as track cars and they are reasonably comfortable too!
That Dyno is siiick 👀💪
Sounds like Darth Vader breathing with that intake haha. Gotta love the new CTR platform. Such a good dual duty street/track car.
It is such an awesome FWD platform!
Can't wait to tune my car, I look forward to hp and tq gains!
You won't regret it!
Don’t tune it!! I need to be able to beat it ;)
Hopefully get my Type R by this summer or early fall. I’ve been in love since its inception
Inception
Can't wait for mine to arrive today, I'm switching to Flashpro for the traction control. Sold my Ktuner last night.
Congrats on the new car!
I was disappointed to not find many FK2 tuning vids, then I remembered they share the same engine with FK8’s
Woohoooo
Sti owner here and these type R are dope. I would love to own a type r and an evo.
Bro that is so on point now i want that for mine
We can definitely help you with the upgrades if you'd like.
You guys are in Canada correct
Woa... that exhaust is SEXY...love the sound too
I have a civic si HFP coupe with the same exhaust 😍 just fantastic
Awesome!
Thanks for the video
Good upgrade video
Thank you!
That car is so sick
He definitely right, I’m getting only 16 psi boost pressure from my stock fk8 when I floor it now compare to 22-25 psi which was normal for winters
This is a good safety feature of the factory ECU and it will mean that keeping charge air temps down will be key for making power in the summer.
@@TougeTuning I installed a mishimoto intake and intercooler, no tune yet. I noticed my psi is only at 15-16 at max. I live at 5000 ft elevation and ambient temps have been around 75-85 lately. Is the psi low because the car is able to get cold air more easily?
I’m getting only 13 psi now with 104 degrees exterior temperature, feels like a 1.5T civic when I floor it. LOL
Great video
Greetings fellow canadians! I am also from Ontario
Greetings! 👊
my tuner has tuned a few of these and he's been able to get them to 360-380whp. he says upgrade number 1 for those cars is hands down an intercooler.
He probably didnt correct for altitude
The limitation is the fuel, 91 octane, and the intercooler. With these 2 changes the power change is even more drastic.
This car looks good in black. Minimizes those fake air vents
The black does look amazing
Wished they get rid of the fake stuff! Or make a better design front and back bumpers painted 🤔
Yeah it's a shame the whole civic lineup looks better in black because of them but in my opinion the black ones actually look sick
2020 they don’t be fake anymore and 2 piece front rotors
Luis Tavarez legit?
those lowering springs were the biggest power adder
Clearly the springs add a good amount of power ;)
would be great if you have links where you shop the parts! if it's you that bought them...love the Invidia sound, which one is that? I want that in my CTR
I see ice on the street, still June freezing in Ontario? here nxt to Montreal is warm as hell...just kidding probably filmed back then
Here is the link to that catback exhaust - tougetuning.com/shop/invidia-r400-cat-back-exhaust-w-titanium-tips-2017-2019-honda-civic-type-r/
We are working on adding parts every week on our website. Not all the parts are online now and can be purchased by emailing us at Sales@TougeTuning.Com.
Look at that tourque 👀
You guys should look at Clown Performance in Cape Town, took a fk2 from its 228kw to 300kw using normal pump gas with some Bolton's and tuning with Hondata.
Thanks for the comment Anees, check out our follow up video which shows the true potential with the 94 Octane and intercooler upgrade.
Colder air is much more dense, than hot air. Ramming those extra dense cooler air will cause a lean mixture environment, that's why the ecu is dumping fuel to compensate. That's why the fuel pump is out of breathe, technically you cannot put a bigger turbo and fuel pump or else you will risk over heating. Remember the manifold is one with the block, if you crack those manifold with the cooling lines say bye bye to the engine.. The Honda engineers know so well what's the limitations of that engine..
What I wanna do to my 21 CTR is all PRL bolt (intake, inlet pipe, front and down pipe, charge pipes and inter cooler) ons and invidia r400 exhaust and a tune see how much that will make
I switched to 94 on my stock WRX and noticed abig difference just in drivability.
I wonder if tuning a WRX is the same as in min fuel changes with timining and boost ajustments needed.
Im trying to build my WRX around the stock tune but the stock tune has a mind of its own. Makes ever pull feel a bit different in everyday driving.
Then the 3-4k dip... Just go damn you.
Yeah on 94 octane the car will be able to maximize power. The ECU on the WRX is very aggressive with timing changes. Getting a COBB AccessPORT will fix a lot of the minor issues.
Tell me if I'm wrong but You can hear the compressor surging as it just starts tipping into boost? the compressors on these things must be small like 13g small a drop in turbo would serve these things we'll is my guess
Hello are you running "disable EGT in hondata"?
This almost ghastly design doesn't look too bad murdered out!!
What are the specs on the lowering springs??? Please advise
On the hunt for Jakes Scoobydo STI
Good video. Can Hondata or other tuning for FC5 1.6 non turbo?
How does it feel with the lowering springs?
Here in Australia our highest pump fuel is 98 RON = 93 PON in the USA.
john reece in malaysia we got ron100 &97
can you guys do this dyno again with 94 octane fuel
We have a video set to come out shortly with 94 Octane and some other upgrades. If you haven't already subscribed, do so and you will be notified when it gets released :)
sick bro. just picked up my ctr a month ago and thinking of getting hondata. what would you recommend as a conservative yet noticeable upgrade? id like to have the car sound a lot nicer too. i live in new jersey with highs of 95f and lows of 20f.
An inter cooler and catback exhaust would probably be a good starting point. Intake and down pipes if you wanted to squeeze out a bit more power. The intake is responsible for the whoosh noise off throttle too. Of course we recommend a dyno tune as well!
isn't the whoosh noise from the blow out valve?
Is the OTS maps from hondata ok with 94 octane from Petro Can?
In malaysia Fk8 very famous car.
Nice car...i love vtec turbo...power full car....
Thank you!
@@TougeTuning welcome...
hmmmm my fk8 on ktuner base OTS maps stage 1 with DP , Intercooler, intake and straight pipe makes 345whp... on 94 octane.. Do you guys do ktuner pro tunes as well?
We don't offer tuning with KTuner at this time. Your power numbers on 94 with those mods seems good although if it's on a different Dyno the numbers would be lower on ours.
I mean all in all, the car is tuned safer, putting out a little extra power over stock, so well done.
Which drop kit is that? The pro or the sport?
Went to my local Honda dealer and inquired about the Type R...Guy told me they don’t allow test drives. Have you heard this before?
I think avoid that dealer, that shit seems suspicious af
It’s true. They don’t
@@snazari1994 Feel like maybe a bigger dealership might, but kinda tough to compare cars and be willing to spend close to 50K CAD after taxes without even driving the car lol
Matthew Moss I have buddies working at dealerships and they were telling people would come jus to drive it around without any plans to abually buy the car.
@@snazari1994 Yea I get that, just sucks for the people that are serious about it.
Which brand gas are you running?
This guy Noes his shit 👌
Vtec turbo sticker add another 50hp.
Technically 76.
At least that much
Stickers are Honda's signature don't hate lol 😂
Ricer baby! 😛
That joke has gotten stale.
that doesn't sound right to me, doesn't make sense at all. No way you would ever get more than 10hp and that's probably at the crank!
14whp gain from a stock tune makes it rather blah but the torque gains are impressive. Torque is what Honda wanted to get the car out of the turns, the engine does just that.
It made 38whp over stock, not 14whp. Thanks for the comment
@@TougeTuning talking about the tune from flashpro completely stock. Before the power adders. 294 with just flashpro. The tune made the biggest difference imo
Touge Tuning nope u are wrong
@@chaserevstuning9271 yes the tuning made the biggest change in this case.
Recently tuned my Focus RS and made similar gains, base was around 280 on 92. Just a tune got me 330 hp but it’s torque under the curve that really changes how a car feels. The intercooler right now is the limiting factor and it will be the next thing changed. I love the type R especially in black because it makes it more “subtle”... if you can say that about a CTR.
Honestly late to seeing this video, but if you’re tracking the car, why lowering springs just curious?
can you guys supply the OnPoint tune with a hondata purchase? just wondering :)
We provide custom tuning with Xenocron tuning. We don't provide anything but custom tunjng.
Why does this car not sound aggressive when you rev to redline? Even with an aftermarket exhaust the sound doesnt change much from stock.
805_S2K That’s whats turning off a lot of buyers /:
Invidia exhaust sounds like garbage on these cars. Hks legamax is legit
Turbos don’t help with an aggressive sound either
I have seen video where type R does not make that much power with all these expensive changes. The only thing that seams to be the killer power is the hondata flashpro. I like to buy Honda type R and put hondata flashpro in it. That seams to be a killer car. I might buy louder mufflers to get more sound out of this killer car although it will probably not make more power. Grate car.
15 hp wt??
i thought the civic type r had 306 whp stock?
How much the setup cost for the type r the intake exhaust hondata intecooler??
Pricing varies depending on the options/bands selected. We can provide you with an estimate if you get in touch with us Louie.
Hows the stock baseline 272 hp? Doesn't this car come with 306hp from the factory??
272 wheel horsepower
Darien Walker crank horse power, crank my friend, wheel horsepower is how much is brings to the wheels, from 272 to 310 is good as hell with just mods & tune, honda is undefeated my friend 😍😍
The lowering springs defo added 10bhp😂
That's all?
Tomatoknuckles Stiffer springs will make a noticeable difference to acceleration. You lose HP through soft springs.
A lot of similarities with all the 2.0 turbo gdi st,gti,si
That's correct Nancy, a lot of the small displacement 4-cylinder turbo platforms will require similar modifications and strategies.
why is it 272 whp when stop is 306
Really nice car man I know 91 octane but turn down from stock boost? Only 15whp from intake, dp and cb? Something not seem rite.
@@amordeweso I know plus turning the boost down from stock boost leval after letting the turbo breath with the dp, cb and intake. Makes no sense to me.
I know in the past civics in Japan made the most stock hp then America and Africa then places such as Canada. Idk if this is still the case but mayhaps.
Boost was turned down for safety and proper tuning. Cranking up the boost is not the right way to make more power. Proper ignition timing with lower boost is the right way to do things. Especially with 91 octane and the stock intercooler this is the correct method of tuning this platform.
@@TougeTuning Ah cool where you getting knock the stock boost leval? I thought stock boost supposed to be conservative but idk about the type r. For example on a stock mazdaspeed 3 the boost is set at 15.6psi. You can easily turn it up to 17 to 20psi without knock especially with and intake and turboback exhaust so the turbo can breath. I know 91 is a limitation.
@@boostercontrol100 the OTS mapping was too aggressive for the 91 octane fuel and it was pulling timing.
How do you make the turbo whistle louder
A Downpipe and intake make for great turbo sounds ;)
@@TougeTuning thank u!
No problem at all
Numbers are always higher on those dinos that don't actually run with your wheels on the Vehicle
Awesome video!!
But in the video u guys didn't mention anything about the jailbreak (unlock ecu )
Do u have to take the ecu out and sent it to somewhere to get unlock(jailbreak) before u replace the downpipe ?
Hey that is correct you do need to send the ECU for unlocking. This was done prior to the video.
@@TougeTuning still amazing video !!!!!! Thanks for sharing
@@user-fq2dw2yk9j Thanks so much no problem, we will be trying to put up as many videos as we can this year!
Jail break? uhhhhhhh
@@PurpleHeartVR the ecu would be software protected preventing upgrades. Jailbreak is to remove this software or disable it.
From the tests I’ve seen, all the intakes for the new type R actually lose hp over stock
Eventuri and injen absolutely do not
They do lose power because without a high glow exhaust/cat or headers. Where is the air going to go? Tune/exhaust/intake, thats recipe
Does this void the warranty?
Warranty would be up to the manufacturer to determine.
Boss.
I'll take a Civic Type R over a new STi and I've always been a Subie guy since 2006.
same here!
Hondas are reliable and suburus ain’t ..
Are the bolt ons California smog legal?
Some of them are CARB legal yes.
I would never pay so much for a civic
So to the wheels it has on or about 280whp and 330 tq.
No that was WHP! 270 stock 310 after! Not great by any means!
Very interesting how you came to that conclusion seeing as they are testing whp....
@@esantiago8989 they are not testing wheel horsepower, they are testing axle power since there are no wheels anywhere in this dyno.
That man definitely needs to go bald already he is hanging on for dear life 😂
For those talking shit on the K20C1 and comparing to a GTI saying the GTIs get like 80-100hp need to actually understand what is going on with the tune and the difference between the K20C1 and the EA888. This is actually really impressive gaining 15 WHP with just a few better flowing bolt on parts and on 2 psi less than factory. Try turning the boost down on a GTI and see what happens..
What are BOLT ONS?
Tits
I thought the fk8 Type R came bone stock with 306 hp?...
It does come with 306HP at the engine which is closer to around 260 at the front wheels.
So it’s advertised as a FWD car with 306 hp but it’s more like 260 at the front wheels?. So the extra 46 hp goes towards the back wheels? Idk if that’s true or not but that’s kinda sad. Why couldn’t Honda make the FK8 type R 306 hp at the front wheels ? . I may sound clueless and I kinda am. I’m just starting to do some research about some stuff regarding tuning cars sorry I’m just curious because I absolutely love this Honda type R
Caleb Rayner
drive train loss happens in all cars, not all the power makes it way to the wheels
Dynos measure what is actually sent to the wheels
The 46 doesn’t go to the back
How much did it all cost ?
Pricing varies depending on the parts used etc. We can definitely spec it out for you if you're interested in doing your Type R
Touge Tuning thanks for the fast response , I’m stuck between a Type R or a Focas RS ... or a 2nd hand M3 or 2nd hand RS 3. I love the type R 19 plate so I’m just curious if the upgrade costs are worth it
Sounds like fucking Darth Vader. So cool.
Are these motors prone to oil dilution like the 1.5 motors?
We haven't seen any hard evidence of this yet.
I would never visit a Dyno having 91 octane in my car.
We strongly advise running the highest octane fuel that is readily available to the owner.
We'll have a follow up with 94 octane numbers and more upgrades soon.
Why not? Some people can only get a hold of 91oct
I added a 3.2L Kenne Bell uusing 91 octane to my '15 Mustang GT. So you think going to a Dyno was a bad idea for me? LOL :)
Venom Svt exactly lol, i use shell v power 91 oct for my Z, if i could get a hold of 93 or higher i would. But i heard 94 octane at esso has a bit of ethanol which burns a lot quicker.
ethanol is key
Didn't he say high pressure pump is maxed already?
in canada its Methanol injection, we hardly have any ethanol stations in the whole country. 91 is "premium" and usually the best you can find. meth injection cleans you up to almost e30 levels.
@@chrisnevergrowold330 I think meth is better than that (e30), but sure is a fair bit off e85, unless you're running multi-port or pre-compressor.
Meth/water injection is very underrated in the States, and even with the large amounts of ethanol the country produces it still is fairly difficult to find readily available. I'm very fortunate to have had a station begin offering e85 within a few miles of me, whereas a year or so ago I would've had to travel 30 mins or better for a tank.
I fill up with e85 , 5 gallons 1.84gal, hondata e30 tune will give you 370hp 385tq.. use 91 octane , cos me 27.00 to drive 300 miles and I get combined 26 mpg I can hit 30 mpg high way
We'd love to have easy access to E30-E85!
Awd doesnt matter if u put a sticker or not 8.51 in 1/4
Needs a full 3 in downpipe and uppipe, wasted money going takeda
You don’t need 3 in piping, 2.5 in is more than enough for 500whp. You’re just talking out of your ass.
@@TechWiz1983 actually when you do go 3" catless downpipe and 3" front pipe on a CTR and a tune you do gain a substantial amount. I know 2.5" is sufficient for that much but 3" does provide better results
We have better mapping systems in the uk for fk2 and fk8 type R’s. We map the Fk8 type R to 410bhp and 385 torque easily with minor mods. Number 1 problem in the US is the fuel ⛽️. Our minimum octane fuel is 95 and maximum is 99 in the UK. I guess that is the problem you guys have in the US
Actually that is incorrect. Your 99 octane is equivalent to the 93-94 octane we have here in Canada and the USA. The ratings are done differently for octane in the UK vs. the US/Canada. BHP is measured at the flywheel where as the numbers we provided are at the Wheels or WHP.
Was wondering why there is a difference between us/uk ratings thanks for that answer.
@@leekirk4493 no problem!
should have did one with just the mods and no tune.
A bolt-ons and pro-tuned type R only making 38whp more than stock? that's pretty disappointed for a turbo car. Most German cars make 80-100whp more than baseline with the same set up.
Most German cars making 80-100WHP gains are either 6-cylinder or severely detuned from the factory. Check out our second Type-R video which shows the true potential of the car with 94 octane and a couple other mods that make a huge change.
Hondata proved that takeda Intake and other brands dont make power for the type r. Stock had better numbers !
We do find on many modern cars an intake is not going to make more power until the exhaust and charge air cooling limitations are resolved.
But guys why not hit up snow performance for water meth injection?
Water/Meth is not 100% safe and when the system fails the engine will detonate catastrophically
@@TougeTuning that's only if you add extra timing. I've been running water meth for over 10 years and never a problem. Its only like 500$ , you should give it a try. Cooler egt, happier engine.
@@Emilthehun that is true, it could be run as a safety measure only if you wanted it.
@@TougeTuning it adds tq at the wheels without a tune
Just like every other honda, you need 5,000$ to squeeze 50hp.
I own a 19 on red but also had the chance to TUNE my 2018 GTI and that thing only need an OTA tune and you instantly gain 80+hp!
K20C1 > EA888 any day, this is coming from someone who owned a MK7 GTI for 4 years...
GTIs are not pushing 24 psi from the factory. They are pushing more like 12, when you get a downpipe and stage 2 you're tuned for about 20-22 psi. This Civic Type R starts at 24psi from the factory and has a smaller turbo because it is designed for fast spool. If you pay attention to what goes on in the tuning here they end up with +15whp and 2 less psi than factory which is impressive for only throwing a couple of bolt on parts and tuning fuel and timing. Try turning down the boost of a GTI by 2psi and see what happens on the dyno then.
Dude , Cla45 come with 450 hp

It would definitely be unfortunate to only have 91
E85 bro better than 93
Who names there tuner Sasha 😂
I’d foking love one of those Civic type R,s but I have no money, can I have yours for free ?..
Finally honda gets on board with the turbos? People forget that Hondas first turbo engine was introduced on the 2006 Acura RDX. 2.3l Turbo producing 240hp & 260lb-ft. So Honda is not new to the turbo engines.
That's definitely not forgotten but the RDX wasn't exactly an enthusiast car that was modified in large numbers.
Thats what I was saying! Honda has 10+ years of modern turbo technology and did so to iron out reliability issues and get testing before making everything turbo. We will see a lot of small turbo engines in the future from Honda.
The statement was more to do with Honda's production enthusiast cars. There is definitely a change in philosophy here moving on from high revving, high compression, naturally aspirated engines for their performance production cars.
The tuner is really disappointing 😂😂 look at his mood @8:40 haha
that amount of torque in a front wheel drive makes first and second almost useless
The front differential is pretty good from the factory on the Type-R
Well the K20c1 does not have a typical kseries trans in it. It is very low geared for boost. It is actually a TL-S transmission that is water cooled to keep the trans from getting to hot from track use. Also has a LSD diff that is well balanced. Great traction control for a factory system. But longer gears really help with traction.
@@TougeTuning i was considering putting the hondata tune in my accord 2.0t sport, but i just thought it would be too much power for the front tires. It's a pretty torquey engine already, and adding close to 100ft/lb would be amazing, except for my poor tires..I know we're talking about 2 different cars with different gearing, i was just curious how much this engine is capable of. thanks for the great vid
All that for 15whp? That's a very expensive(I imagine) 15hp yikes
If you want power mods, best thing to get is a tuning software like Hondata.
It's due to the low octane fuel and air temps. He had to lower boost to make power and be safe on 91 octane
Not really, there’s a lot of factors involved. Better fuel and bigger inter cooler would put this car at plus 30-40 whp more than these gains
It’s actually 38whp from stock pull.
It's where and how the machine makes power. With the addition of upgrades and the new radiator this thing will be better on-track, and it's already great from stock. $$$ very well spent, IMHO.
wait, this car has 310 hp fron the start , whats going on
from the crank, not the wheels
