Worst week ever! Breakdown in the middle of nowhere, water in the fuel & broken tow bar

- Well this is the worst week we have had.
snap the tow bar again in the main street of Katherine, we cannot get a new one and no one will touch it or weld for us, so I put it back on to get us to Mount isa for replacement. The Ford ranger doesn't like wrong fuel as we get water in the fuel before the sun rises , with major break down in the middle of no wher. We are stranded due to a paper work error from Ford Austrailia.
we head from Katherine to mount isa, we stop into Daly waters pub,Crocodile Dundee hotel,
Until we are left stranded in the side of the road.

great to see you got the inoculation sticker... you helped save the world...
I shall never complain again. Poor things. I guess these moments build memories lol
Yeh it shore does that’s one spot ya don’t want break down it takes forever for roadside. could a been worse the car an van were still drivable but dam it cost some cash in fluid. Refill it every 250km
Is your van too heavy for the towbar. On a trip to our new place up in the bush, the removalist truck we had was towing a trailer with all my shed gear. Halfway thru the trip on Colo Rd NSW, the towbar snapped on the truck. I did tell him before the trip, that I thought the towbar, was a bit light for the job. So there on the side of the road, out come my tools and scrap steel and welder/generator, and I built him a new heavy duty towbar, then we fitted it. Made it to our new place no more problems. He left that towbar that I built on there for the next 4 years until he sold the truck and trailer. That towbar you have is undersize for the job it has to do, from what I can see.
Hey mate
I can’t really say too much atm it’s been addressed with the installer and they taking it up with manufacturers . But on the bar its rated 3500kg with 350kg tbw. Our tbw was 280-290 depending on gas’s bottles. Van is 2860 with full water tanks. I’ll let you all no the out come once we find out what they going to regarding this. I don’t care bout getting a new bar it’s letting people that towing vans that have got bars like these they will fail. We lucky no one got hurt it could have been a lot worse if we did it at high speed
Bloody hell that is a tough one . My fear has always been fuel issues . 🍺
Yeh was lucky with fuel was a pain but the fluid issue was the killer. Can’t believe they wouldn’t tow Aus over paperwork. It still wasn’t fixed when we got home we had to sign up Nrma organise tow truck.
This is an aftermarket tow bar and its probably overloaded if bolts are breaking.
Yeh it shouldn’t be rated at 350 our tow ball is 280kg my fault I don’t get under an take the cover off so didn’t no it was bolted thought it would be one solid piece like most bars they have sent it back to Rival an recalled all the bars they Insta but we haven’t heard back from rival yet
Wow bloody fuel.
Outback fuel is notorious for having water and algea growth in their tanks. Besides running a Fuel Manager secondary fuel filter, I always use Fuel Dr in every tank of outback fuel. 20ml per 20ltrs instantly removes water and algea on contact within your tank, before it gets to any filters.
Yeh Cool Seem like a good idea when in the out back. I thought we would get bad fuel at least once.
Unless your way off the beaten track this doesn’t happen as much as it used to. During the tourist seasons fuel stations get weekly delivery’s and contaminated fuel comes from creek crossings
What magic happens to instantly remove the water......and where does it go??
It stays in tank even when you re top up I should have taken tank out and empty out the full tank of fuel & change both filters
but we didn’t have that option in middle nowhere with not enough fuel to get to the next town so went to next town emptying the fuel out into one jerry cleaned both filters filter & stopped and cleaned out when light came on. it took about 3 tanks to get most out. Next town I put injector cleaner in to try an help went through about 3 filters getting it back home to where the light stopped coming on.
Maybe something to do with car breaking down having be towed as it was about 1000km from first light on the fuel filter.
I use Fuel Doctor on all refills. Sorry to here about your fuel bad luck.
Thanks it’s happens took a few tanks an two new filters to clean it up.
I saw you working on your car in the Mt Isa cvan park,Sorry to see you had more troubles, I'm a Ford person ,towed two different caravans around Australia with 2 different Fairlaines,go Ford.
Was a fun job the caravan park were great to let us do it an they disposed of the old one for us. Didn’t get see much of mount isa but will get back there soon
Have to ask - tow ball weight ?
Were they high tensile bolts in the plate attachment?
looks like the safety chains are attached to the plate/ tongue.
if that let go, safety chains are a bit pointless.
The tbw is 281kg with full bottles an swags on it. Vans gvm loaded is 2.860kg . Yeh they were it’s crazy set up hey speaking to manufacturers atm about it.
@@greataussiecaravanadventures Who is the tow bar manufacturer tho?
Don’t they have to be engineered to carry 350 kilo tow ball down weight, if the vehicle max tow capacity is 3500 kilos?
High tensile bolts shouldn’t be breaking like that, if it was engineered correctly in my opinion, unless they weren’t the correct grade bolt or they weren’t torqued to specification or if they were removed and then re-used and torqued to spec a second time perhaps?
If they are torque to yield bolts, then they shouldn’t be re-used and torqued a second time they should have been replaced after the first use.
Lots of possibilities, but somethings not right judging by the look.
Yeh you are right it was definitely not built right. we have given the bar to the installers and they are talking with the manufacturer atm on what they are going to do about it. Tbw was rated 350k. We were 280kg with swags on an bottles full
We haven’t been only ones it’s happen to apparently. Don’t want go into it too much atm but We Will let you no the out come once we hear back from Rival.
So what happened with the tow bar?
Did you manage to have it repaired?
They recalled 3500 bars Australia wide I had the new hammer bar installed an put on the front my new 3.2ltr the design has been changed since it happened no bolts now is welded
I bet that genuine bar will never fail unlike your original. Is it an Hayman Reece? Love the video
No it’s a bt50 bar was the only one we could get out there.
Lucky it Fits ok just couldn’t put the bumper back on it.
Well it can happen to anyone I got 79 f100 with 7x5 trailer and left axle didn't like going anymore on main street off Tennent Creek so now waiting for two axles to come for 9inch staying at Sammy panel beaters until Wednesday this week I will fit new bearings I am lucky it didn't come out when a road train coming the opposite direction could off been bad accident
Wow lucky for sure. Sux when happens in middle of nowhere.
@@greataussiecaravanadventures yes , in middle nowhere ,that tow hitch is very badly designed I am traveling from Good old Darwin Town to Adelaide spending easter in Tennent Creek Take care be safe
What was the fluid leak? Didn't hear you mention it.
I still don’t no where the fluid was actually coming from.
the car ended up having another egr unit & thermostat replaced , had it back for 3 days an did it again sent It back to Ford and they put a new head on it. Seem be running ok atm
Not being negative I would trade it for a Toyota.maybe a bit more expensive but you get what you pay for.those fords are made really for tradies.
Yeh would love one trying to get cars atm is nuts the supply and prices are crazy. We are thinking of what we can do atm. The bi turbos definitely can pull it but it’s too much on the motors over long periods .
@@greataussiecaravanadventures great channel hope you have better luck.
I now tow a 4t van with our LC200VX after getting LOVELLS 4ton upgrade 4 yers ago. Had no problems.
Yeh I wish I had of got the 200 while it was still being made. The Xtra Covid tax on em atm is crazy. we looked at the 300 series but they can’t give a time frame on delivery atm so not sure what do yet. Looked at dmax there the same can’t give you a time frame so frustrating.
@@greataussiecaravanadventures we nearly bought a Ranger 2.0L and after seeing this my suspicions are confirmed. I did some research and that motor was designed in the UK and Germany. I don’t reckon it’s suited to what we dish out to these cars and the high ambient temps. All the best mate.
Sorry to see your troubles, what was the coolant fault?
Only guessing but I think it was the blown head gasket causing It . Ford replace the egr unit, then it still did it so they replaced thermostat, still did it then they finally put a new head in motor seems to be ok now. It has not done it again but we haven’t had the van behind it yet so will be interesting to see how it goes under a load.
@@greataussiecaravanadventures that's good that Ford fixed it, all under warranty?
Best of luck when you do pull the van. Safe travels.
Hi Guys just started following, So will have to go back to the start. Shame to hear all your troubles in this Ep. Just looking at your Van looks about 23 ft long? Over all How does the Bi-Turbo and 10 speed go? We have the same ranger and Primary (Direction Plus) fuel filter for that same reason, it alarms to let you know before it get to your secondary fuel filter. Great Videos Oh let us know what water hose blew out on you Cheers.
Hi Annette
Thanks for watching the car tows van well an easy when running right . It 21”6 van 2876 kg 280tbw
I think it was the thermostat they replaced egr in Manjinup, then replaced egr again In Nowra didn’t work they did thermostat , still did it then replace whole head. Running well atm but haven’t towed van since fixed the vans in getting repaired.
replaced the head and gasket under warranty?
Yeh they replaced the head it took about 10 weeks to get parts an finish it runs well now kinghorn Ford our dealer where we brought it have been great to deal with
The introduction is just a little bit to long, I did enjoy your video.
Thanks for feedback appreciate it glad you enjoyed the video
I’m working on next atm hoping to finish the build this week
be glad when it’s done som many hours into this one than get out test it be interesting to see how it tows the van. I’ll be weighing. it when complete be interesting see what weighs in at 👍
That’s my dads caravan company lol
That’s Cool Hope you enjoy watching our trips
Sorry for bad news, It a FORD and a lemon.
Yeh it definitely sucked just uploading next one now. Does wouldn’t tow it as there does at Manjinup never updated system so we had drive to Sunshine Coast 22ltrs of radiator fluid it ended up blowing the head.
Hell yeah !
Yeh I was one of the lucky ones sad what social media influence does hey loving the new 3.2 though hasn't mist a beat yet an actual tows better then the 2.0ltr
ohh lordy
Yeh I just wanted to roll over an give up after the few weeks had. But we got threw it.
