We’re finally saying goodbye to NSW in Australia, making our way into Queensland for the very first time in the bus. BUT… it doesn’t go quite as smoothly as we had hoped for our first night… we were woken up by the Australian police and ranger in the middle of the night. This is van life…!! Who knew the van life rules changed as soon as we stepped foot over the border in to Queensland!
Before that, we get to check out some pretty spectacular spots in Coolangatta and Currumbin. Let us know in the comments if you have been to Queensland, or if this might help you plan your trip there?
If you would like to check out where we got our 'NAIA' plates made you can do so here: www.myplates.c...

WHO WE ARE: We are Alex & James. Originally from the UK, but also citizens of Australia after living there for 7 years. When we left the UK in 2014, we quickly caught the travel bug and began making memories through video and photo. Our Instagram is where this all began for us @twosometravellers but our love for video is where we really love sharing our adventures.
In 2014 we left the UK to go travelling.
In 2015 we moved to AUSTRALIA.
In 2016 we got engaged in HAWAII.
In 2018 we got married in the PHILIPPINES.
In 2019, we decided to chase our dreams! We quit our jobs, sold our belongings and booked a one day ticket to Asia.
In 2020 we became Australian citizens.
In 2021 we began building our bus.
We’re so thankful to be able to live something we love every day and share with you all our previous and upcoming adventures! :) A+J x
Dont answer the door if police knock , cover your bus or car windows so you can't be seen inside and ignore any knocks . As long as your vehicle is registered and parked legally , theres nothing they could do.
It's called Fraser Island not Kgari BS.
Those are quite steep fines. Here in the South Island of New Zealand, the fine usually ranges from $200 to $400, depending on the region. But a lot of Kiwis would like to see the fines increased because there have been so many problems with tourists illegally parking vans on beaches and then taking a crap on the beautiful beach. Then the next morning, children go outside to play on the beach and there is a disgusting human turd there. So I think the government will raise the fines.
I feel I some cases there should be a Registration site fee! Minimal just so are legal and the possy can be left Clean!
We aren’t against the idea of fines, we were just uneducated on the matter. Needless to say we have grey and black water tanks so will always be respectful of any new area. It’s a shame what is happening in NZ with so many disrespectful tourists! Hopefully NZ gov’t cracks down on those breaking the rules! 🙏🏼 p.s. we LOVE NZ, have been 3 times 😍

Sorry about Gold Coast Council guys.
Hehe never mind, thanks Barbara! We learn from it and move on! :)
I thought that Police Road Safety ENCOURAGED people to "rest" when driving long distances rather than having "micro sleeps" and crashing. It turns out if you rest you can get booked for doing it. Crazy.
So wrong that you use deceptive methods (lie), just to get people to click and watch your videos.
Agreed, it's the "do not recommend Chanel" button for me.
Absolutely they obviously have no morals and will think this is good to push the algorithms for $$ I’ll just make sure I don’t click on any more on their videos if they pop up
Womp womp
I combatted that whole "not allowed to sleep overnight in your van" thing by sleeping during the day and then doing stuff at night/all night. Works a charm.
Note to self… DO NOT ANSWER a knock at the door and pretend you are not there…😮
Oh I knowww!!!!
@@TwosomeTravellers Totally agree! They cant fine you if you dont answer the door!
definitely, just pretend no one's home
What if they tow ya?
Also another reason to not answer the door, it could be a murderer!
QLD the police state. I got fined for hitchhiking there 43 years ago. I was very please to leave and have never been back.
I know the feeling. Another problem is trying to pretend you're thick-as-a-brick.
No such place as kgari. Its Fraser Island, always was, always will be.
So crazy you can’t sleep in your car. My suggestion is maybe park in a neighborhood and then people would just assume you live in a house you’re parked in front of?🤷🏽♂️ I can’t wait for the North tropical Queensland! That little clip looked so cool!
Hehe oh that is a good idea, we would usually do this but perhaps we picked the wrong neighborhood! Never mind! Ahhhh Tropical North Queensland is just going to be the best to share! Thanks for your support as always, means so much! Hope you are doing well :)
@@TwosomeTravellers Of course! Y’all are the best!!
The issue is not sleeping in a car or van.
It is traveller's defecating in people's gardens and in the parks.
If the van is fitted with toilet facilities it shouldn't be an issue, but I count over 50 vans, cars, station wagons parked in the streets driving 800 meters to the beach at 5am in the morning.
We are self contained, with toilet and shower. Sleeping in any vehicle overnight in the Gold Coast area is illegal 🥺
We have the same problem in New Zealand! Tourists come over and defecate like animals on the beautiful beaches, even when they are public toilets available. A lot of communities in tourist towns are getting together and protesting as they want those tourists banned.
the issue IS that camping is not permitted outside designated areas in Queensland and so, it is illegal to sleep in your car.
@caravanlifenz
I campervanned in NZ for 3 weeks. (Best 3 wks of my life) we had the app to show us where we can stay (we were fully contained). Our 1st night we were woken up at 5am by police who explained that the side we parked on was not for campers. He pointed to the other side where vehicles took up all the room. He just told us to watch for location signs, and he gave all the vehicle sleepers big tickets because they were not contained. Lol.
I went to Coolangatta from Brisbane where I live. Used to go a lot. This was before Covid. Ranger(spineless type-not Clint) knocked. Gave me a warning - next time $350 fine for sleeping in van. He said "we have your van on file". Never been back. Not sorry Covid did damage to their tourist dollar. But, rents are high, so neighborhoods adjust to alternative seekers. No point in disputing.
I spent 6 months there, I work online and working in your vehicle is allowed.
I could prove that I was working as abn, business name registered and was online. Slept where I wanted when I wanted. You cant be booked working in your car only camping, you still have to abide by parking signs that is all.
Either that...OR remove the parking signs as soon as you pull up!
That's one of the challenge for a bus conversion; it's not easy to go stealth. That's why I might go for a cargo van that looks beat up on the outside to see if I can stealth some of my nights when traveling through QLD
We found Gold Coast and Brisbane really hard to stealth camp as there aren’t many free spots around there, however we were ok most other places. Of course a cargo van is easier though!
@@TwosomeTravellers From what I've read, QLD doesn't allow sleeping in your car overnight. Other places depends on the council like in Victoria, you can sleep in your car but you're not allowed to camp
@@freddyhardware840 and the Australian authorities and council wonder why the tourism is declining with all these rules and regulations,in Victoria you can sleep in your van but you can't camp, and in QLD you can't do anything, lol.
@Shane888 Davies Tell it to the people that's been fined by the council.
I've always thought using a 20-ton 'bus' to move your 180-lb body around is an idiocy anyway. When my house burned down I lived conveniently and comfortably in a Ford 'Econovan'. Stuck to carting around things I NEEDED rather than crap I didn't. (eg WHYTF would you cart around a toilet-ful of shit which you might only need once a day? Ditto 'shower'. Ditto stove/oven (I did all my cooking on a small PORTABLE double-burner gas stove, usually on the back floor of the van with the tailgate up. etcetcetc. (7-inch TV sat on the dashboard plugged into the cigarette-lighter plucg and using 6 Watts. Bed was two suitcases (carrying clothes, etc) and laid end-to-end down the middle with a 2" mattress on top. Not always convenient, but always SIMPLE and problem-free. The kicker is that on dual-fuel I was getting 26mpg instead of SIX mpg., and carried enough fuel to easily travel between major cities to avoid paying jacked-up rural prices. Three solar-panels on the roof connected to the same (480ah) battery-bank as the ignition-system, (which charged whenever the motor was running) so ample electricity anytime. (including the restrained use of a microwave). Too easy: which is the whole point of 'hitting the road'.
Hey @twosometravellers can you explain please why did the police knock your door? Did you park at the wrong place? Just trying to learn from that and avoid issues in the future myself ahaha. Thank you 😊
We parked on a residential road. We didn't know it was illegal to sleep in your vehicle on a residential road. The law changed when we crossed the border from NSW into QLD. Our advice would be to find a paid campground during your time in QLD up the coast (especially in the busier coastal towns). You might get luckier in the quieter places up the coast.
How the fuck can you afford it? I've been living and working in Australia all of my adult life and could not afford to travel and expend what you have been doing at such a young age. I'm now 69 years old and preparing to travel as you are now doing - and I have lived an honest and hard working life. I just don't get it!
YOU obeyed all the rules and and accepted all the attitudes. NOne of those things are ever made for ANYBODY'S benefit except the pomppous Rsoles who rake in the cash. Tell them to get fucked and take you to court. Most won't (too expensive!) but if they persist just s them how many days you have to do in gaol to 'cut out' the fine. You'll never hear from them again; and if you do the worst that can happen is you get Bed-and-Breakfast for perhaps 4/5 days. (smug-smug: FREE holiday in sunny Qld. Including car-parking!)
I've been living in my RV full time since 2013 and only support RV friendly towns that support me, especially tourist exploitation towns, I pass straight through them and if I need fuel I use my Jerry cans. It's almost as bad as Byron Bay, so I use wiki camps or camps 12 now and plot my journey to avoid the parasitic councils who think they are above the Constitution, you can park wherever if there's a time limit on the no standing sign, you can park there legally after the time allotted and leave before it starts but some councils who override the Commonwealth Constitution of Australia and delegate themselves sovereignty think they're above the laws of the land...PS I have once experienced that kind of harassment, so I just asked for their badge number and name and told them that I was very tired and I didn't want to drive fatigued so if I have an accident I'll give your name and number and you are responsible if I kill some family because the councils don't care if you kill someone in a fatal accident they only want you to sleep in one of their parasitical caravan parks and pay money, because that's all they're interested in, money over life, if you're tired and fatigued; drowsy drivers die as the signs depict on our roads, or maybe they're going to take them all down now...
It’s not naia, it’s nai’a, the ‘ is a letter in the Hawaiian language, not including it is a misspelling and could make it a completely different word. For example naia without the ‘ means to loosely or haphazardly tie something, it’s DOESNT mean dolphin. Also, Nai’a technically doesn’t mean dolphin either, it’s the name of a specific dolphin species found only in Hawai’i, which gets incorrectly generalized to mean all dolphins in general.
Too many people take advantage of facilities for the locals, who also pay these though taxes and levies. Many on the fly campers leave rubbish, crap, piss, all over BBQ areas, break into closed huts, surf clubs, etc. Use a camp site, or find your tyres slashed.
Nothing like a bullshit video title to get the punters in , but the trouble is they never come back
😘
I was getting pulled over nearly every day in Queensland for nothing more than having south Australian number plates. Cops told me south Australian vehicles were involved in drug trafficking!
I told the cop, but I don’t do drugs or sell them. He said, so you don’t think I could find drugs in your car? I said no. He repeated himself, you don’t think I could find drugs in your car? I said well I guess you could find what you like. He said, yes now you understand and who do you think they will believe? I said I suppose you. He said you know who has the power then.
At that stage I decided to use reverse psychology and said, ok, I understand you are the powerful, but if you book me then I will have to stay here in your town and go to court etc and you certainly don’t want people like me around, so if you would just let me go I will head far north and then out of Queensland by the week. I wasn’t really, but I just said this. He then said ok, but if I see you again I will book you and arrest you and you will go to prison for drugs!
This is a true story! After that I always put my phone to video recording if pulled over and record without them knowing. And yes I got a cop later and was given some compensation. There are actually lots of corrupt cops. Which makes you wonder how many innocent people have their lives destroyed by these criminals.
You should registered in QLD. If you are in FNQ and need to reregister after 12 month's you will need to find an inspection station. And we dont do that everyv12 months in QLD , you just pay rego.

Qld has free local council rest areas in most towns you can spend the night.

Sleep in your own car! Oh no no no, how dare you do not rent and feed investors.
Typical Qld pigs enforcing unlawful council policies, hot tip park in residential area after you've had dinner and enjoyed the sunset.
I've lived in Qld most of my life and this made me appreciate exactly how lucky we are to have these awesome beaches and all the rest. Loved the bloopers too!
What happened to driver reviver campaign where you were encouraged to stop and have a sleep to avoid fatigue
At 1am I would have told those wanna be tyrants to go kick rocks.
Where is their legislation for that made up law? Cant sleep in your vehicle, what rubbish.
Im from Hawaiʻi and your definition of naiʻa is accurate! …. Pronounication is a little rusty lol but thats okay!! Mahalo for perpetuating respect and joy in sharing with the world a bit of Hawaiian language. I really enjoy these travel videos!!
-living vicariously
Ah this makes us so happy and is so good to know we are pronouncing that correctly! We love Hawaii and hope we can go back and visit the beautiful islands one day. Thank you so much for your lovely comment and your support! :)
Six months or a year earlier, you would have had quite a different experience crossing that border. (Or not crossing it...)
The Qld Gov managed after a few lockdowns to block off every one of the back roads crossing the border - and for the locals, it was extremely tiresome. And for anyone else planning to sleep in their vehicle in Qld, be aware that there are draconian laws against sleeping in your vehicle in Qld - and on the Gold Coast, this is stringently enforced. Be warned!
Try parking at the local police-station. Or on the kerb directly in front. Use your imagination and QLD coppers won't have a clue what's going on.
Had no issues what so ever in rural Queensland. Travelled down in a stationwagon, sleeping in the back over a three month period back in 2017. Generally speaking, the coastal regions are the worst places to pull up on the side of the road for the night in Queensland. Even in rural areas, you have to be careful. One tip, is look for rest areas and stop in those while in Queensland(whether coast or inland)
The issue in Queensland, is its illegal to camp/pull up on the side of road unless you're in a spot set aside for it. In kther words, land legally designated for camping. Hence my suggestion to use rest areas to get around the stupid law.
Be aware, many of the rest areas in Queensland are 20 hours maximum with some as short as 8 hours.
Western Australia also has some quirky laws in regards to camping and stopping off rhe side of the road.
Good information, good to know. Thanks for the heads up.
AWWWW come and park at my place in Brisbane fr a few nights!!!
I am so serious guys, I am also building my van, you welcome to get water and parking :)
Thanks so much! That is such a kind offer!
If it was a residential street they can chat you, try a park 'carpark' next time. Also, (here's an aussie slang word for ya) If you hear a knock at the door, just lay 'doggo' 😂 Don't move a muscle, don't call out, pretend the bus is empty, hopefully they pissoff.
If you don’t get up and answer the door police can’t know if you are sleeping there therefore no fine. Trust me, a cop told me that. From the moment you answer then you are doomed.
Oh really haha! Never mind!!
Everyone knows you can’t sleep free in the Gold Coast
Welcome to QLD
Hehe! Thank you!

OR park right next to the roadside stops for free!
Well .I would try and dispute a fine if U got one.the cost and drama,s of a court appearance....Mister Blue and mister green will have photos and timesheets to back up there stupid greedy fine,s.....😄
The main job of a lot of the police in Australia is to make money for the government. I was a interstate truck driver for 25 years so i have seen all the little sneaky ways they can fine you for doing nothing wrong. Thank god i got out of that job. And yes there are good cops that do a good job and help people. I'm not knocking all cops.
Welcome to Qld,
I'm sorry for the way the police, "public servants" conduct a themselves here..
Don't camp in car parks on the beach
Residential rds only
Even down jervis bay way
We lived in our 4x4 for 3. 5 years without paying for accommodation and was lucky enough to get away with no fines, had a few wake up calls but we slept in our front seats and always talked our way out of it 😅🤣

Only if a good amount of folks do what you teach, just imagine how many millionaires we already have or will have in the future. I have been looking at similar opportunities. As Warren Buffet noted, he has witnessed this occur frequently. Never did my husband and I make more money than others in the middle class. With a $250k stock portfolio, we intend to retire at age 58. Never have we ever sold even one share of stock...
So did you get a fine? I would not go to the gold coast, been there once for our honeymoon, never again, crap place. Sunshine coast is way better. Lived in Tewantin, for a bit. Lovely town
I for one will NOT EVER buy ANY product touted by the INTRUSIVE ADS on these vids.
5 dollar tacos? You call that cheap!?
For Australia...yes it is haha
Yes stupids never answer a knock or call no matter who ! Most especially state guards! When one opens a door you invite evil in !
10:08 Down here in Vic I pay about $2.50 a can!
You can conditionally accept the fine, it's not a one way contract guys.... alternatively you could ask the council when the referendum was for them to become a 3rd tier of government which enables them to give out fines ....clue their was 3 referendums but Aussies said no each time.... they are an illegitimate authority
new subscriber here,
Looking forward to seeing more of your videos
"No camping" signage is clealy visable in many seaside areas ,
Especially car parks . Be thankfull for the warning and dont push your luck.
If you say you are homeless its allowed we got given vouchers, and advice lines and where to get free food. Must have own toilet on board which we did and they asked if we could move around stay 2 nights in car spots only which is fair.
A $10 camping app could have saved that hassle.
That wouldn’t of made an interesting vlog though would it 😉
Queensland $$$$$
Haha you got that right 😂
Its a campvan not motor vehicle????
Its the same all over Australia including NSW. Some towns have local legislation, hence the Ranger(they inforce local laws) backed by the police as rangers are gutless twits. What would have happened is some whinging old miserable bastard would have complained that your van was blocking their view etc. Closer the the coast the more whingers you get. You can always drive to a truck stop and park there overnight. but having a bus parked in a carpark is also a fineable offence if its impeading the flow of traffic for example.
Yet we are always advised to sleep when tired................
give me a first!
😆😆😆
Awesome as always 👍💪🔥
Thank you SO much!! :)
That is Not Currubin Is collongatta
Did they see you were sleeping?
I am a Gold Coast local and I must say it is very annoying how many people are sleeping in their cars, just getting free accommodation and clogging up all the beachside parking lots. Pissing beside their vehicles and leaving rubbish for the locals to pick up. The fines should be bigger.
So you’re either a motel/hotel owner or jealous. Which is it?

Rubbish. Thats Melbourne and Sydney.
Just so you know. I believe most of state will have locations you are not allowed to sleep in a vehicle. Imagine if you did. You will have thousands of hippies parked up @bondi beach, byron, goldie etc. and residents are paying literally millions to buy property there
Most busy public areas such as beaches and nearby streets have clear signs where you can/cannot park/no camping. Which is understandable.
However this street had no signs whatsoever. It was because each State within Australia has different laws and restrictions to where you can/cannot sleep in your vehicle. To our knowledge we were abiding by what we thought was legal. It’s not that we knew and decided to break the rules 🙏🏼 We know for next time however!
