We’re finally saying goodbye to NSW in Australia, making our way into Queensland for the very first time in the bus. BUT… it doesn’t go quite as smoothly as we had hoped for our first night… we were woken up by the Australian police and ranger in the middle of the night. This is van life…!! Who knew the van life rules changed as soon as we stepped foot over the border in to Queensland!
Before that, we get to check out some pretty spectacular spots in Coolangatta and Currumbin. Let us know in the comments if you have been to Queensland, or if this might help you plan your trip there?
If you would like to check out where we got our 'NAIA' plates made you can do so here: www.myplates.c...

Dont answer the door if police knock , cover your bus or car windows so you can't be seen inside and ignore any knocks . As long as your vehicle is registered and parked legally , theres nothing they could do.

Those are quite steep fines. Here in the South Island of New Zealand, the fine usually ranges from $200 to $400, depending on the region. But a lot of Kiwis would like to see the fines increased because there have been so many problems with tourists illegally parking vans on beaches and then taking a crap on the beautiful beach. Then the next morning, children go outside to play on the beach and there is a disgusting human turd there. So I think the government will raise the fines.

We aren’t against the idea of fines, we were just uneducated on the matter. Needless to say we have grey and black water tanks so will always be respectful of any new area. It’s a shame what is happening in NZ with so many disrespectful tourists! Hopefully NZ gov’t cracks down on those breaking the rules! 🙏🏼 p.s. we LOVE NZ, have been 3 times 😍

It is traveller's defecating in people's gardens and in the parks.
If the van is fitted with toilet facilities it shouldn't be an issue, but I count over 50 vans, cars, station wagons parked in the streets driving 800 meters to the beach at 5am in the morning.

I campervanned in NZ for 3 weeks. (Best 3 wks of my life) we had the app to show us where we can stay (we were fully contained). Our 1st night we were woken up at 5am by police who explained that the side we parked on was not for campers. He pointed to the other side where vehicles took up all the room. He just told us to watch for location signs, and he gave all the vehicle sleepers big tickets because they were not contained. Lol.

I went to Coolangatta from Brisbane where I live. Used to go a lot. This was before Covid. Ranger(spineless type-not Clint) knocked. Gave me a warning - next time $350 fine for sleeping in van. He said "we have your van on file". Never been back. Not sorry Covid did damage to their tourist dollar. But, rents are high, so neighborhoods adjust to alternative seekers. No point in disputing.

I've always thought using a 20-ton 'bus' to move your 180-lb body around is an idiocy anyway. When my house burned down I lived conveniently and comfortably in a Ford 'Econovan'. Stuck to carting around things I NEEDED rather than crap I didn't. (eg WHYTF would you cart around a toilet-ful of shit which you might only need once a day? Ditto 'shower'. Ditto stove/oven (I did all my cooking on a small PORTABLE double-burner gas stove, usually on the back floor of the van with the tailgate up. etcetcetc. (7-inch TV sat on the dashboard plugged into the cigarette-lighter plucg and using 6 Watts. Bed was two suitcases (carrying clothes, etc) and laid end-to-end down the middle with a 2" mattress on top. Not always convenient, but always SIMPLE and problem-free. The kicker is that on dual-fuel I was getting 26mpg instead of SIX mpg., and carried enough fuel to easily travel between major cities to avoid paying jacked-up rural prices. Three solar-panels on the roof connected to the same (480ah) battery-bank as the ignition-system, (which charged whenever the motor was running) so ample electricity anytime. (including the restrained use of a microwave). Too easy: which is the whole point of 'hitting the road'.

Our advice would be to find a paid campground during your time in QLD up the coast (especially in the busier coastal towns). You might get luckier in the quieter places up the coast.

I've been living in my RV full time since 2013 and only support RV friendly towns that support me, especially tourist exploitation towns, I pass straight through them and if I need fuel I use my Jerry cans. It's almost as bad as Byron Bay, so I use wiki camps or camps 12 now and plot my journey to avoid the parasitic councils who think they are above the Constitution, you can park wherever if there's a time limit on the no standing sign, you can park there legally after the time allotted and leave before it starts but some councils who override the Commonwealth Constitution of Australia and delegate themselves sovereignty think they're above the laws of the land...PS I have once experienced that kind of harassment, so I just asked for their badge number and name and told them that I was very tired and I didn't want to drive fatigued so if I have an accident I'll give your name and number and you are responsible if I kill some family because the councils don't care if you kill someone in a fatal accident they only want you to sleep in one of their parasitical caravan parks and pay money, because that's all they're interested in, money over life, if you're tired and fatigued; drowsy drivers die as the signs depict on our roads, or maybe they're going to take them all down now...

It’s not naia, it’s nai’a, the ‘ is a letter in the Hawaiian language, not including it is a misspelling and could make it a completely different word. For example naia without the ‘ means to loosely or haphazardly tie something, it’s DOESNT mean dolphin. Also, Nai’a technically doesn’t mean dolphin either, it’s the name of a specific dolphin species found only in Hawai’i, which gets incorrectly generalized to mean all dolphins in general.

I was getting pulled over nearly every day in Queensland for nothing more than having south Australian number plates. Cops told me south Australian vehicles were involved in drug trafficking!
I told the cop, but I don’t do drugs or sell them. He said, so you don’t think I could find drugs in your car? I said no. He repeated himself, you don’t think I could find drugs in your car? I said well I guess you could find what you like. He said, yes now you understand and who do you think they will believe? I said I suppose you. He said you know who has the power then.
At that stage I decided to use reverse psychology and said, ok, I understand you are the powerful, but if you book me then I will have to stay here in your town and go to court etc and you certainly don’t want people like me around, so if you would just let me go I will head far north and then out of Queensland by the week. I wasn’t really, but I just said this. He then said ok, but if I see you again I will book you and arrest you and you will go to prison for drugs!
This is a true story! After that I always put my phone to video recording if pulled over and record without them knowing. And yes I got a cop later and was given some compensation. There are actually lots of corrupt cops. Which makes you wonder how many innocent people have their lives destroyed by these criminals.

Six months or a year earlier, you would have had quite a different experience crossing that border. (Or not crossing it...)
The Qld Gov managed after a few lockdowns to block off every one of the back roads crossing the border - and for the locals, it was extremely tiresome. And for anyone else planning to sleep in their vehicle in Qld, be aware that there are draconian laws against sleeping in your vehicle in Qld - and on the Gold Coast, this is stringently enforced. Be warned!

Had no issues what so ever in rural Queensland. Travelled down in a stationwagon, sleeping in the back over a three month period back in 2017. Generally speaking, the coastal regions are the worst places to pull up on the side of the road for the night in Queensland. Even in rural areas, you have to be careful. One tip, is look for rest areas and stop in those while in Queensland(whether coast or inland)
The issue in Queensland, is its illegal to camp/pull up on the side of road unless you're in a spot set aside for it. In kther words, land legally designated for camping. Hence my suggestion to use rest areas to get around the stupid law.
Be aware, many of the rest areas in Queensland are 20 hours maximum with some as short as 8 hours.
Western Australia also has some quirky laws in regards to camping and stopping off rhe side of the road.

Only if a good amount of folks do what you teach, just imagine how many millionaires we already have or will have in the future. I have been looking at similar opportunities. As Warren Buffet noted, he has witnessed this occur frequently. Never did my husband and I make more money than others in the middle class. With a $250k stock portfolio, we intend to retire at age 58. Never have we ever sold even one share of stock...

You can conditionally accept the fine, it's not a one way contract guys.... alternatively you could ask the council when the referendum was for them to become a 3rd tier of government which enables them to give out fines ....clue their was 3 referendums but Aussies said no each time.... they are an illegitimate authority

Its the same all over Australia including NSW. Some towns have local legislation, hence the Ranger(they inforce local laws) backed by the police as rangers are gutless twits. What would have happened is some whinging old miserable bastard would have complained that your van was blocking their view etc. Closer the the coast the more whingers you get. You can always drive to a truck stop and park there overnight. but having a bus parked in a carpark is also a fineable offence if its impeading the flow of traffic for example.

I am a Gold Coast local and I must say it is very annoying how many people are sleeping in their cars, just getting free accommodation and clogging up all the beachside parking lots. Pissing beside their vehicles and leaving rubbish for the locals to pick up. The fines should be bigger.

Just so you know. I believe most of state will have locations you are not allowed to sleep in a vehicle. Imagine if you did. You will have thousands of hippies parked up @bondi beach, byron, goldie etc. and residents are paying literally millions to buy property there

    • @TwosomeTravellers
      @TwosomeTravellers  9 місяців тому

Most busy public areas such as beaches and nearby streets have clear signs where you can/cannot park/no camping. Which is understandable.
However this street had no signs whatsoever. It was because each State within Australia has different laws and restrictions to where you can/cannot sleep in your vehicle. To our knowledge we were abiding by what we thought was legal. It’s not that we knew and decided to break the rules 🙏🏼 We know for next time however!
