You know, Mighty and Ray as characters are essentially just remixed versions of Sonic and Tails. Mighty is just Sonic fused with Knuckles, and Ray is just Sonic blended with Tails.
That’s a good point. I know I said in the video that Mighty’s hammer drop isn’t really good for building speed, but now that you mention it I do remember that some slopes mesh really well with his downward momentum and can channel his speed into the landing. I guess it does have some usages after all!
Very great video! I really like how you made it feel like each character is overpowered in their won way. It really makes you think about all the different types of balancing devs have to do to make a good game.
Something else worth noting about Sonic's kit: it's the best suited to fighting bosses, aside from possibly Mighty. The Drop Dash itself can quickly let Sonic escape after landing a hit, and the shield abilities also give a very QUICK change in momentum. As a result, Sonic has a much easier time getting out of the way when a Boss lines up an attack, _and_ can play much more recklessly in the main stages due to the added security that this mobility provides What's interesting is that this ALSO applies in other sonic games: -3&K: Instashield gives a disjointed hitbox, letting you get an extra hit without extra risk Adventure: Homing Attack immediately snaps Sonic onto the enemy, removing the difficulty of landing on top of an enemy in 3D space, like a "smart" version of the Fire Shield. He's also the only character to retain the spindash, which gives a way to quickly get back up to speed Adventure 2: similar to SA1, but the spindash is heavily nerfed, with a slight buff to the homing attack. However, the Lightspeed dash went from _just_ an exploration tool, to actually letting sonic rocket thru anywhere with rows of rings. The bounce bracelet also brings in some of the features of the Bubble Shield Heroes: Power Characters are the combat specialists now, but Speed formation is still a very _safe_ choice in many cases, with Blue Tornado functioning both as an attack and as a Double Jump
Completely agree! Sonic as a series is so fun to analyze because its mechanics are so deep. Never thought about the characters’ abilities in terms of combat before, so that was really cool to get your opinion on! Hope you enjoyed the video and God bless
Sonic is the best character overall imo, He has so many abilities which can make him suitable for a lot of situations. The drop dash, Peelout, and fire shield all enhance his speed, while the insta shield is more offensive, and the water and electric shield help in his verticality. He is just so finely tuned with most of his abilities serving a useful purpose over another (except Peelout, its not better than drop dash, not by a longshot).
I think might’ve rating was way too low. He bypasses all enemy armor with hammer drop and hammer drop can be used on slopes to gain massive speed. Not to mention the insane defense he has, mighty is for sure my fav character.
Thanks! I’d say that Amy (at least in her Origins appearance) would have a 3.5 for speed (since her hammer charge is a slightly weaker version of the drop dash) and a 1.5 for both platforming and exploration. Her extra moves might be great for killing enemies, but they don’t really gain her any advantages apart from that. She’s pretty much just Sonic but without the elemental shields. Thanks so much for the question! Now that I’m thinking about it, I should’ve at least mentioned her in my video.

Unfortunately not had much time on mania. So far I don't really like ray (not used to his glide thing yet) and not sure how sonics drop spin works yet as usually tails or knuckles
It took me forever to learn the drop dash too. I didn’t use it my entire 1st playthrough. All you need to do is jump, re-press and hold the button, and then when you land Sonic will drop dash. I’ve heard a lot of people say Ray’s glide is a little weird: when you jump, press jump again to start the glide, then press forward to dive down, and then backward to pull up. If you do this in a repeated pattern, Ray will glide up and down to gain speed in the air
@@lemoncakestudios3031 yeah he had it in Knuckles' Chaotix. And alot of people didnt like it. But I do because its unique and helps with certain platforming sections.
You forgot that mightys hammer drop can by pass armored enemy's and can upon impact destroy enemy's in a short radius around him.

Well knuckles might be a remix of mighty since he was first before knuckle in that one arcade game.
@@JoesAnimations34921ture
Yeah they are PRE both of those characters ...they were in the SEGASONIC arcade game
At least i think the arcade game came out before sonic 2
@@TonySpike it was made in 1993
Something I love to do with Mighty is use his Hammer Drop on slopes to build speed quickly and I think that’s just neat

This is a good video. I don't see that many Sonic analysis so seeing one is cool!
In Mania, Ray is definitely my favorite. In Superstars though its a tie between Amy and Trip..
Agreed
It is sacrilegious that Sonic Superstar did not have Ray & Mighty playable. And they wondered why they lost abysmally to Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Great video; I'd love to see an addendum with Amy in Origins.
You’re so good with these videos. Please do more.

Funny thing Mania was my first sonic game as well, that I played myself.
Let’s gooooo lemon with the new post!!!!🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
15:50 Ray has good vertical mobility
15:54 Ray has no vertical mobility
Translation:
If you’re good he has good vertical mobility
If you’re bad he has bad vertical mobility
Your analysis was really good and your videos are great your such an underrated youtuber
Thank you, that really means a lot. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! I would love to hear your thoughts on Amy in Superstars once it releases.

Even though Ray is my favorite to use, I do have to agree with you. Sonic (with the elemental shields) is perfect for any situation.
Sonic is easily the best character in Mania for me. With Superstars its either Trip or Sonic.
Agreed
Especially with Max Control. Not only can he keep his speed in multiple ways. He has the elemental shield advantage too.
I think might’ve rating was way too low. He bypasses all enemy armor with hammer drop and hammer drop can be used on slopes to gain massive speed. Not to mention the insane defense he has, mighty is for sure my fav character.
You should add some background music to these and make a video about sonic heros
Since I’ve got it on PlayStation, I have to get the add-on for Mighty and Ray
So I don’t know anything about there abilities in the game!
You sound like you can voice Sonic the Hedgehog no cap.
Really? Preciate it!
How would Amy rank on this list? Great video by the way.

Thankfully with mods, you can restore Mighty's wall jump. And it works pretty well with Mania's level design.
I didn’t know Mighty had a wall jump! It’s a shame that Sega took that out, would have really improved his design and made him more fun to play

Fair point lol. Glad you enjoyed the video!
