Oh no! vermin infestation on our sailing boat

  • Boat Life : There's a vermin in me kitchen
We have been sailing our floating home around the world for the last five years and have recently taken our beautiful kitten Mocha onboard, how ironic therefore that for the first time ever we have a rat onboard the boat and Mocha is no use at all.
Ivan and I returned from an evening of exercise to find the rat waiting or us. We cleared out the food space, put down sticky traps and now we wait.
Across the world we also catch up with what Declan and Finn are up to respectfully. One recovered from measles the other getting his heart health examined.

    BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

Hey Rachel this is for you guys. First of all, and most importantly, hunt around anywhere for similar wooden traps that we have in Nz. Make a mix of white flour and icing sugar. 2/3 flour and 1/3 icing sugar. Set the trap up in a likely spot. Even in or about the cockpit. The colour attracts them. And smell. However flour hides human smell. Sprinkle the flour mix on and around the trap. Tie it down, trust me you'll hear the trap, from inside the cabin. It works in the older bivvies down here. Particularly with our bush rat species. I used with the possums, doing trap monitoring. For DoC. When I say sprinkle, I mean grab a handful. They still make it, you know. Good luck. Hopefully you'll get rid of the little bug-beggars. Good to see the lads hearts are still beating. Eh.? Take care guys. Atb from down here in Aotearoa.

To make this flour, sugar and chocolate rodent bait:
Pour equal parts sugar (either white sugar of castor sugar), flour, and baking soda into a small container. Add a little chocolate powder or chocolate sprinkles for extra flavour, and mix it well. The chocolate is optional, but it makes the bait far more enticing!
Add a very small amount of water into the mixture, and stir it in, adding a little at a time until a fairly firm dough is created.
Spoon two or more heaped teaspoons of the bait mixture onto each small disposable saucer.
Place the saucers with the bait along walls or between spaces where rats frequent. Leave the bait in the same location for a few days

Hello Rob, they sure can chew through wires. While our rat was on board Rob was having dinner with a couple whose campervan was written off in one night by a rat getting busy on their wiring. Needless to say, he was very keen to hear that Ivan and I got rid of our uninvited guest quickly. Unfortunately it was not before he did a bit of chewing of his own.

Too sad to hear Finn is not fully recovered... At least, the heart scann came up well. Go Finn!! Keep pushing, as Rob says (though not to hard or fast). We are with you, Champ!
Very happy for Ivan, having met such a great group. Knowing Ivan, no doubt he dosn't have any trouble interacting and making friends even with different languages haha Happy seeing him being himself again😂
And during days, he for sure he is good company and help with stuff such as taking Mocha to the vet. Poor Mocha, hope is recovering well and fast! Rachel, great idea the clothes instead that thing.
And Declan, happy to see you (here and in your own channel) fully recovered. Rachel, you should recover the "Finn's Files" and "Declan's Files" while they are off board. It was a cool idea 😅

It's great to see Ivan enjoying himself with guy's of his own age. I am sure he makes friends pretty easily. So Finn's Heart is normal, that is very good news because Covid can cause problems in this department. Mocha looks great and will be a lot better after the operation. Like the UB40 linked title on the still. Rat's can swim. In Manchester they live in the sewers and you are never more than a few metres away from one. Declan is doing well in Austrailia and Rob is still going strong. I hope you have a fantastic year in 2024. Keep well and safe. James.

That rat may have gotten onboard by climbing up your anchor chain. There are disks that can be attached to robes and mooring lines to keep them from getting past.

This channel has really plumbed the depths of late, with first cats aboard and now rats & this is just proof that Rob as skipper has lost the plot & dropped his standards.
If you want to keep animals as pets, go buy a house in NZ ffs.
Even my wife says that this channel now is just stupid & no longer worth watching.
We enjoyed it early on while you sailed Aussie waters - but since then it’s just gone further & further downhill sadly.
Unsubscribed a while back but UA-cam still shows the vids in our feed, but we no longer bother to watch any longer.
