- Family survive 5 years living on sailboat at sea
We have owned our sailboat nine years and for the past five years we have been full time live aboard sailors on a bid to circumnavigate the world. Our first bluewater experience was eight years ago when we set sail for seven months, sailing from New Zealand to Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia then back to New Zealand. We have survived storms, a lightening strike, sails ripping, our own selves for company and recently a near drowning. At times we have made stupid mistakes, but we get lots of things right too, taking the slow route around the world.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

Rob would like to inform you all that he did actually get much closer to the tiger shark than was captured. That old adage, if a tree falls in the woods and no one saw it, did it really happen?...comes to mind. We may never know for sure😊

The real question is, if a mime falls in the forest does it make a sound?
Omg who’s the little girl?? Oh wait, that’s Ivan! 😍😅 What a beautiful and emotional episode!
Haha 😄 yeah, so often we heard, she's a lovely girl, what's her name? Reply: Her name is Ivan.
And you guys featured heavily, of course. 👍
You guys have the best episodes! Love it all….!!!
@MrBillK1961 thank you Bill
What a neat video to remember all those times when the boys were growing up on your boat. I am sure it was hard to see Finn leave again and I want to wish him all the best in his races! Thanks you all, take care and stay safe!
Thanks JC, lots of great memories in one video.
You guys have an amazing knack of being able to draw us all into your story. Why was I crying at the end, with Rachel, when Finn went back to NZ? I have no idea! 🤷♀️ But I guess I really could feel all of the emotions of having to send your child off and not really knowing when you will meet up again. Great job to everyone in this episode.
Thank you Laurie. Sometimes we tear up just cos😊
Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting. what a lovey vid
That's lovely
Look at those baby boys! They were adorable. Now they are full grown men.
They are our time clocks 🕒
Absolutely love your channel and family!
Thank you very much.
What a trip through time! Amazing!
Good times.
What Beautiful memories and a Beautiful Family!!! Love this channel, thx for sharing!!! From Connecticut USA
Thank you!
Fantastic capture of your lives aboard- what an amazing experience for you all!
It was and great memories.
Excellent video again.
Robert, those hooks in your feet gave me chills.
Thankfully, I had finished my dinner before seeing the buckets each sick individual had. The scene with the whales was amazing. You also met the Whittakers, who out in the deep blue have not.
The Volcano was amazing in Vanuatu. 5 years you have seen a lot. Stay safe. See you next video.
Thanks Jonathan. Sorry about the sick 😊
Thanks guys! So glad you shared these memories with us!
Our pleasure Trev
An amazing family, I’m sure these last five years have definitely forged a strong bond of trust, dependance, perseverance, commitment, compassion, and mutual support, but most of all love for each other. As I’m sure there would be times of frustration, and difficulty, especially living so close to each other, but your love and absolute care for each other is evident and that just amazing. This must be quite the adventure, I’m honoured to share in your adventures through videos here on UA-cam, and can’t wait for more videos to come. May God bless all of you, Rob and Rachel, Finn, Declan, and Ivan.
Thanks Wiehan. We feel fortunate to have had the adventures we've had.
Well said!!
Some great memories there CK’s. Thanks for sharing. 5 years is quite a time - well im raising a glass to the next 5 years. Stay safe and cool.
Thank you!👍
Thanks for taking us along for the ride. It's been quite a roller coaster, but an epic one.
Yeah great adventures, thanks Raggas.
Great great times you offered to all of us during all those years...🥰
Thank you Frantz. Wonderful memories.
This video could have been 2 hours long and I would have wanted more when it was over. Your channel is so enjoyable. Thank You for all of the hard work making these!!!
You are so welcome, thank you! 😊 Rachel had actually planning to do a longer episode however searching for the different old footage was a bit of a time-consuming nightmare so was compressed. Could do part 2 if she has the time and energy.
New content is just as awesome, the wander down the past was just really great, give Rachel a break, she works enough :) @@TheCruisingKiwis
I really enjoyed this episode. I laughed so hard when Rob wanted to show the vomit in the bucket. That is something I would do, LOL.
It would seem that you and I are a rare breed, Terry.
@@TheCruisingKiwis rare is good……I think……
Awesome to relive all those memories.
You are an amazing family, it makes me proud to be a kiwi, Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year, and adventures a head, and a gold medal to came for Finn.🎉cheers
Thanks Vince
You're blessed with such amazing young men and family! Thank you for sharing your adventures with us and watching your family grow up together! Safe travels to your family can't wait to see your next adventures. Will you be sailing to the Bahamas anytime soon? 🐋🐡🐠🐬🐟🦭⛵️⚓️❤
Thank you. We'd love to visit the Bahamas. Not any time soon though.
We have followed from the start and love this channel, for the humour, adventure and fallibility, it is a real look at learning on the job and that's why it is so great. The Boys' spin off is growing in skill and follows, unsurprising as it is really fun and inventive. Never understood why you don't already have bigger regular subs. Don't stop, we love it. Fair winds and following seas. Greetings from London.
Thank you very much, Susie. It would seem our channel is destined to trickle. It's up to the boys to look after us in our later years. 😉
Sessions greetings. I hope you have a white Christmas.
just shows how much you guy have got love for each other i appreciate you all for sharing that love and your lives with us all you guys are awesome thank you
Thank you JR
It must’ve taken ALOT of work putting this episode together.
Greatful
Thankyou
Well spotted Stephanie. It was a nightmare for Rachel to put together.
Lovely episode, Rachel and family, loved going down memory lane with you. Safe travels and enjoy the holiday season! Cheers!
Thanks very much Donald.
What a fantastic video looking back on so many memories. It reminds me again of what a kind and loving family you all are. Real and authentic are the words that come to mind. In my view the best sailing family on UA-cam. Thank you so much for letting us share your lives. Keep well and safe. James.
Thanks James, just scratching the surface on that one.
Another great episode. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Bob
I’ve been watching your family for years. Feel like the boys are younger brothers. Boys growing up as boys. Rob and his escapades. (Tasting of some disgusting things.) And Rachel as the glue that holds it altogether. Wonderful photography, great editing. Please do more song parodies. They are great. Love Ivan ‘s “is there anymore cheese?”
Awesome message thanks AG. Especially like the... boys growing up as boys.... There seems to be such a rush for kids to grow up.
+10! And yes, please some more songs and parodies😂
Groovy baby Groovy
Just had to watch this video again, it was great, and had to share it also.
Lovely thank you David!
That was a nice look back, almost forgot the long hair on Ivan when he was younger.
That hair at one point reached his butt
Nice episode, thanks!
Cheers Sausage!
Loved the look back at how far you have come and how much the boys have grown. What fun you have had and I've watched it all from the comfort of my lounge chair 😊
Thanks pumpkin. Great memories yet only scratched the surface of the adventures had. Maybe a part 2 could be on the wings. However its a massive process digging up old footage from years gone by...
*omg, ivan is so lucky!* wish id never been back to nz. -_-.

What fun and so emotional to hear the recollections of all tha living and growing and exploring. You all are lovely, witty , and wonderful to watch. Thanks for sharing your saiiling life.
You're most welcome.
Loved the old footage. The boys have grown into beautiful young adults. Ivan’s hair was fantastic.
Thank you Tracey. Ivans hair grew to actually reach his butt.
Great video, you guys! I thought I sent a message on Patreon but I don’t know where it went. Thanks for that. That was really fun. Maybe one day we’ll bump into each other somewhere.
Thanks Mark
Thank you for sharing your memories. And sharing you amazing life. I hope you keep it coming. Will there be more before Christmas and what are your plans for Christmas.
There will be at least one more, maybe two before Christmas then a break.
I tried to write something but the comments were switched off but now they are working. Was that me or you?
Sorry pumpkin, not sure why they were switched off. Some UA-cam blip going on there.
Live. Laugh. Love. Especially the live part. Just sayin.
Yep!
Cracking episode!
Thank you
All I got to say is that I love your channel and I love you all stay safe and stay healthy blessing
Thank you Ron
OH! You broke 20K, CONGRATULATIONS!
Yes! Thank you!

This is for you all, but directed at you Rob. I'm "Hooked " on your channel. Ok that's enough. Hey great looking back, over those 5 yearsthough. . Btw, did you ever cross paths with Sailing Nikau.? I was subbed to their channel , but have a feeling they alerted us to your channel in the first place.? I think.? Anyway take care. Atb from down here.
Thanks Bryan. Better than being hooked on substances I suppose. I've heard of nikau but not sure if they suggested us.
Nice throwback on growing up on the boat! ❤ from 🇨🇦
Thank you. It's a mission to find the footage but worth it.
Thank you for sharing your family and lives with us in such a genuine way. Very few sailing channels feel truly genuine, and you guys are right up there at the top. Loved this journey back in time. And loved Rob's beard! :)
Oh yeah that beard. It disappeared like the rest of my hair
I HOPE YOU ALL STICK TOGETHER
Me too😊
Love your videos keep them coming please
hmmm, looks like I'm going to have to go back and watch some of your earliest episodes (got to the party late). I've clearly missed some of the *fun*. Thanks for getting the pronunciation of "Tonga" right (been chewing my tongue off watching another channel). Well done - you should have 10x plus more subscribers than you have - don't stop!
Thanks Richard, this of course was only scratching the surface, it's hard dredging through old footage. Good luck with the enduro!!
I loved this episode more than all!
Lovely memories
Great one!!!

Awesome video, keep em coming. Cheers from Auckland.
Thank you
The journey may end but those beautiful memories will go on forever! Thanks for sharing!!
So true 👍
"You're all very brave from behind your computer screens." Love that, Rachel! Blessings to you all.❤
Hehe she slipped that one in rather surreptitiously huh
A new comment -- couldn't yesterday for reasons mentioned in the previous week's episode. Good show guys. Take care.
Beauty thanks Daniel!
Loved watching some of those highlights
You are all awesome
👍
Good grief. I've been following you guys for five years! But then I've had my boat for 2 1/2 years. Doesn't time fly. I'd forgotten how many times Rob had injured himself. Especially with those lures. Your "Geoff Mackley" moments on the volcano on Tanna must have been an amazing experience.
2.5 years?!!! Wow that went fast.
Loved that, and realised it gave me, your mum, a chance to watch you all grow up and travel with you and join in your happy and sad times, to cry and laugh with you.
Wonderful photography, enjoyed visiting places I would never have seen and the great commentary you provided plus you lovely little drawings and maps.
Bless you all, Happy Christmas, may 2025 be good to and the boat, keep travelling, very proud of you, thank you for letting everyone journey with you 🎄⛄️🍷😃⛵️x
Thank you Gangang! 😊
Love hearing the boys talk about their memories
Yeah it was nice to recollect together.
What an awesome way to grow up, except for Robs cooking...
They are coming round to my cooking. True story!
I felt the same way...laughing, (Ivan always being Ivan and expressing so naturally haha) feeling amazed and emotional all through the great vlog.
Congrats on the editing and the interview. Such a great farewell, until next time, to Finn.
Such a lovely memories! The seals, sharks, whales, people you met, tasty and not so tasty food and even the scary moments (big waves, storms or Rob hurting himself and of course Finn's incident) are bonds that will keep you Cruisding Kiwis always together, no matter the real distance between any of you.
Finn, take care and keep rowing! Looking forward to more Finn Files following your path to Paris'24.
Safe journey, good winds!! For many more great and fun adventures!!
Yeah your right, life experiences for anyone anywhere form powerful bonds. The more the better.
I can’t remember when I first started watching, but it’s been awhile, I’ve watched every episode, and it’s unbelievable how big the boys have gotten. In the first videos, Declan still had an unchanged voice. What bothers me about watching children grow up is it’s also a reference point of how quickly I am aging myself.
Hehe yes they are like time clocks.
WOW. Just managed to catch up with this video. What an amazing journey you have all had as a family unit. 5 years that you will never forget and the boys(Not sure about Ivan and his hair. As you have mentioned it does seem that he was mistaken for the opposite sex a number of times 😅😊😂)have grown into fine young men.
You have all been through a lot that life has thrown at you, especially in the last couple of years. Yet you continue to sail on and produce top quality videos. Looking back on the old footage certainly would bring back many happy memories for your family.
Trust that you have a great Xmas where ever you are and look forward to seeing new episodes in the future. Take care and sail safe.
Thank you Steve, we do indeed have find memories made from our adventures and great to look back on.
Thats what you got to love about parents, I did the same. Always make the memories of them younger than they remember them. Take lots of photos/film/video. Then just never stop talking about it. I am sure you have done it many more times but thanks for including us this time. Nice job all.
Thanks George, having kids is a treasure.
Just amazing, sharing these brilliant memories of life so much less ordinary. Here's to the next five!
Cheers to that Derek.
Great video to start the week off with! Really enjoyed the informal format of it. Plus some great laughs! Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey guys. I love the fact that you give anything a go. You inspire me to take on a new career. Cornice fixing. Just have to commit to it. Cheers guys.🤙
Had to look up that career. 😊
Nice recap of your past thanks for sharing it. Merry christmas to You all stay safe.
Thanks Calvin, sessions greetings
and looking forward to the next 5 and 1/2 years!
Thank you. We hope so!👍
living the dream guys, many families wouldnt even understand why you would live like that. but thats agood thing as the seas would be to crowded and it would become way less special. the few that get it are gifted
Fair point Simon
loved it, was like a trip donw memory lane. I forgot all about the hair Ivan, had. First time i watched a video I thought he was a little girl. Your show deserves way more subs than what you have. keep up the awesome shows.
Thanks Stan. We miss that hair.
This family is such an amazing family
Thank you Mark
So fun to see some video of your early sailing days. Ivan is a character!!
Young Ivan and that hair!
Gold as always and congrats on 20k subs.
Thanks Dave.
Magic Episode. Loved it.
Thank you!1👍
Beautiful. But that seal was so sweet. I would not have been able to leave.
Yeah that was special
Great memories and much more to come.
Thank you, we certainly hope so.
Great recap of your tour so far. Keep it going 😀
Thank you! Will do! Happy New year. 😊
Good luck, Finn!!

This was a nice sail into memory lane. Wow, where does the time go? Finn is heading back, for training, before Christmas??? i warned you that he will not be ready for the gruelling training much before March, 2024. No one ever listens ti Jim!! i pray, this time i am wrong in my conclusions. Ttfn
He's going to gently give it a go. If only to know he's tried.
