An entire episode of Friends without any dialogue:

I think we can all agree that laugh tracks are terrible. They're obnoxious, unnecessary, and an obvious waste of time- but exactly how much time? How much of an average episode of a sitcom like Friends is JUST laughter? That's the question I attempt to answer in this video.
This video was one I've been slowly writing for a few months, and one I had a ton of fun making. I know it's very different than anything I've put on this channel so I'm hoping you guys are on board. As you can probably tell, this was heavily inspired by the style of nerdwriter1 ( • Harry Potter & The Pri... ), one of my personal favorite youtubers.
It's a weird video because it combines comedy and math- two things that are very different. But if you've followed me on here for a while, you know that math is a strangely consistent theme in a lot of my videos. For some reason a love of statistics is deeply ingrained in my brain and there's just nothing you can do to change that so stop trying please.
Comment whatever feedback you'd like.

The season 5 episode 14 coincidence reaches beyond these two shows.
5x14 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is The Box, which is the highest rated episode of the show with 9.5 on IMDb and a fan favourite.
5x14 of Parks and Rec is Leslie and Ben, which has 9.3 on IMDb and marks one of the milestones on the show.
5x14 of Breaking Bad is Ozymandias, which even Vince Gilligan said was the best episode of the show. It has a perfect 10.0 on IMDb and almost every viewer will tell you how that episode is TV at its peak.
In conclusion, every show creator is just one lizard with a bunch of human suits and has a thing for 5 and 14.

For me who has watched friends many times entirely all alone, laugh track does give me the feeling of not being alone at all while I am watching. In fact it does give me permission to not feel like an idiot to laugh out aloud in many scenes. Even when you are watching with friends and family it does give you a homely feel to it but i get it it's a thing of past and wouldn't feel right in today's sitcoms that's why it only work with friends which really does make it special as it is of it's time.
yes!!!
@Flasher Studios yes! And that's also why there's ''long'' pauses, its live audience
Pretty sure this is the reason for laugh tracks. Over the last hundred years we've become less social. Pretty sure the laugh tracks became a thing to replicate the experience of attending a live showing or watching TV with a group.
It was weird in the past too honestly, and I get the comfort feeling but just learn to laugh n be comfortable with it
Actually the laughing track is helping to lighten up the mood
Honestly after a couple minutes of watching friends I don’t even notice the laugh track
unless somebody famous walks in and the entire audience is screaming for 5 minutes

@@juicysatsumabeauty I know that. I wasn't saying its a bad thing, I love the show :/
I heard Friends' creators say that sometimes they would change a joke because the audience wouldn't laugh so they would have to come up with a new joke and see the audience reaction. So laughs helped for that too. I like laughs, especially when something really good happens like Rachel and Ross's first kiss, they scream and it makes me feel like I'm not watching it alone.
Yes, I find it odd how he already started to force his opinion on to us. And made me feel guilty for liking laugh tracks.. I love shows without laugh tracks too like The Office, Parks & Rec, Modern Family etc. But shows like Friends, The Nanny, Will & Grace, Seinfield etc really had a good way of delivering the laugh tracks. Yes you have really afwul shows like Big Bang theory who just use them for everything, but that is also true for a lot of silent comedies. And to be honest just like, I guess laugh tracks can get too much, so do some silent comedies. Yes I love to have moments where I can also laugh on my own but some silent comedies are so silent that I start to feel alone and even get me depressed lol. It's the deliverance and the balance in both situations that's important. So I don't really agree with his glorification for mostly silent comedies. Laughing tracks can also feel homey and nice and you don't feel so alone sometimes. In his video 2 years later he also said CBS is the only channel that does laughing tracks now ''because some people don't like change and just like to stick to old stuff'' which is a really stupid take. A lot of people like both, it just has to be done right. I don't know something irks me the wrong way about these smug videos of people talking down on good shows with laughing tracks. :/

If Friends wasn't shot in front of a live audience, Chandler and Monica would have been in a short-term relationship like originally planned. The long reaction from the live audience when it was revealed that Chandler and Monica slept together was what convinced the creative team to push through with Mondler.
As much as I hated that they kept the relationship a secret, we got a lot of golden moments from it so it’s all good
The episode where Chandler goes to Tulsa and is with the girl Miss Oklahoma, that was their plan. Mathew Perry opposed that and said Chandler should end up with Monica.
David Schwimmer is the best. The way he slides from behind the door to under the bed while keeping a straight face as Bruce Willis enters the room is pure unadulterated comedy.
His expressions while applying powder and lotion to help his leather pants get back up kills me everytime I watch it.
He is a solid all around actor! Great comedically and was quite detestable in "Band of brothers"!
I hate Ross as a person but love him as a character, masterpiece by David

Laugh track apear on all the old comedy. Its an old thing. A lot of classics have them
Fresh prince of belair
Look at shows like Fuller House and One Day at a Time... the laugh tracks are ridiculous. I really don’t mind laugh tracks, maybe because I was raised off of 90s sitcoms and I’m used to it and don’t find it the least bit annoying, but holy shit the laugh tracks now are so over the top. The crowd loses their shit when a character walks into a room. Imagine Friends if the audience went wild every time the gang headed into Central Perk or every time Monica walked into a room. That would be a real nightmare.
nevermind. key I think. One Day at a Time is actually filmed in front of a live studio audience. I can actually tolerate that show because holy shit, Rita Moreno is a gift
The Office doesn't need a laugh track
because Jim is the laugh track.

Wrong, he just signifies the absurdity of the situation
Another factor besides when the shows were written is that the office is capitalizing on awkward comedy. You sometimes need those weird silences for the jokes to really land. A laugh track/live audience would move you out of those moments too quickly. Not sure why it took me rewatching Drew Gooden content years later to think of that 🤣
I've always felt the Office was more relatable, more personal and intimate. I felt like the characters were my best friends. Maybe because of the camera stares.

I used to hate laugh tracks. I still do, but I used to, too. But I've come to the realization these shows were just trying to simulate the experience of going to a theater and watching a live performance. Be honest, you will be more primed to enjoy your experience when you are surrounded by people who are having a good time, especially when these are people that you are close with and enjoy the company of.
On the other side, The Office and other shows that try to emulate its style are attempting to simulate the experience of being within an in-group and all of the humor that derives from having intimate relationships with these people. It actually makes you feel like you're a part of the group. Now, whichever experience you prefer is up to you. But these shows are trying to do two entirely different things and I think it might not be the best option to compare them without equivalent context.
I saw Batman Begins in the cinema. The audience laughed at every line out of Michael Caine's mouth. It was dreadful and I struggled to enjoy the movie as a result.
Huh, never thought about the fact that it’s simulated theatre in that way before. Good observation

Bnha
As far as I can recall, Mr. Bean is the only show that I feel uses canned laughter properly (if it even is just a laugh track and not live reaction). Not only does it fit the bizarre actions that we see being portrayed onscreen, but the recorded reactions are varied and feel real. Sometimes the whole room erupts into laughter, sometimes it's only a few chuckles, and sometimes the audience is completely silent while one person lets out a lone guffaw. Sometimes you'll even hear a cough when nothing special is going on. It feels less like the show is forcing you to laugh along, and more like you're watching this freakshow with a group of friends.

The office thrives off it’s awkardness, friends doesn’t.
You didn’t really make a point here. Friends isn’t supposed to be awkward. What are you trying to say?
Cristobal Ordonez friends thrives on corny jokes, its not funny.
johnny day Friends isnt supposed to be awkward? all the characters are quirky weirdos, thats the point. ur telling me ross isnt awkward?
there are literally so many awkward moments in friends, but even if there weren’t, how the fuck is that seemingly the deciding factor of which show is better? like the whole point of the office as a mockumentary is to build on those moments, so yes, it would be pretty shit if it didn’t.
My Sandwich? MY SANDWICH!!????
They literally showed us the CPR training scene in my health class last week because the teacher thought it might add something to the conversation, and get people to actually pay attention
I think the most underrated thing about Friends, amidst all the hate people suddenly started feeling towards it, is the production value.
The way it was shot, the way they color-grade those few first season, the way they dress them, the way make-up is beautiful for every character, set design. It is a really great creation in its own right.
Also i dont like how suddenly people are blaming actors for being in that kind of format, and those videos without laugh track are just stupid, cause actors were aware of laugh track.
Television comedy was not developed as it is now, so people thought why not do it like in theater..Go to theater sometimes and you will see same pauses, same interaction with people laughs..
I am still one of biggest fans of Office, so this is not even a comparisment for me. But i feel like people are over-hating Friends just so they can feel special and different than others cause at one point everybody loved Friends, probably those same people.

@@lunamilo2065
It wasn't fully authentic, but it was more authentic than shows that use laugh tracks. And like I said, they often relied on the audience's response (or lack thereof) to figure out what worked and when they could change something. Speaking of multiple takes, there are several blooper reels where we see the audience laughing along with the actors at them messing up their lines, which is obviously genuine, and whaddoyaknow, if sounds exactly like what ends up on the final cut.

Why do people hate Ross? He’s funny with unagi and when he finds out about rachel and Joey and pivot! I mean cmon
Livy Rose U hating Ross so much is actually just a compliment to David Schwimmer. He is no doubt the best actor on the show. His comedic timing and physical expressions are what separates him from the rest of the cast. He just plays a misunderstood character so people overlook his ability as an actor. Ross has been he most complicated personality on the show and is therefore the hardest character to play. Props to Schwimmer for perfecting Ross.

The choice of direction and documentary style of shooting made office a big hit, the little accidents felt so real the sound effects lighting and the characters acknowledging the camera was superb it added so much and also helped us know more bout the characters in their private moments. Choosing not to add any background score to it keeping the moments as real as it could be made it a hit, sharp closeups to capture each character's reactions especially through their eyes was great and also the acting of the characters who were not in the foreground was also intelligently done. Crisp sound design fell in love with the sounds of an office milieu.
This video is surprisingly well documented. Excellent work!
Fun Fact: Laughtracks were first added to shows because everyone at the time were used to being in plays and hearing other people laugh, so producers wanted the audience to be comfortable. And they kept doing it until newer generations came along and stopped it

The Office doesn't ever make me full on laugh, but it keeps me more focused, and seems to add a lot more that makes me chuckle more than when I'd watch Friends. I often find myself feeling like a part of the group (at least until Michael left; rip)
I love to imagine that Drew said to himself after every joke he said in his head “Alright, that’s a joke”
Congrats on the mention in this video bro
creed i love you
quick question tho how many people did you murder
k . r . c . all of them
@@scratchedcds yes
the CPR scene in The Office is hands down one of the funniest scenes in comedy history
Michaels gift to Oscar before he leaves.
"And now Dwight knows not to cut the face off of a real person" XD
Office UK is better "I THINK THERES BEEN A RAPE UP THERE"
Omg that was iconic😂😂😂
When Michael cooks his foot
Friends ultimately has a plus point. It continued to be so good till the end but Office lost its charm when Michael left the show. Even I couldn't watch it after season 7.
I agree with you on the second point but friends is one of the worst shows of all time
@@dumbshit2353 never seen someone saying something that reflects their name perfectly..
@@dumbshit2353 You can't be serious
@@dumbshit2353 After reading your comment I see why you chose that name 💀
Right! But none of the main characters left friends before the end of the show
The Office is like that girlfriend that your friends didn't liked cause nobody could get her sense of humor but you loved her so much cause she was the best and always made you feel better, even tho everyone kept saying she's weird and awkward
I’m 6 seasons into friends and I didn’t even realize there was a laugh track because I just subconsciously tune it out
I binge all 10 seasons in a week, its ALWAYS on in the background xD
There isn't a laugh track! It was shot in front of a live audience! How do people not know this?
That’s not something you should be proud of. That means for 5 minutes in an episode you’re unconsciously staring like a zombie
I always hear it, stopped watching after the first two episodes.
The first time I watched the show I didn't notice it either. But then I was told about it and instantly noticed
The highest-rated episode of Brooklyn 99 is "The Box," which is 14th episode of the 5th season.
OMG
is it now? lol, that's amazing
omg
That episode is fire
Same with breaking bad lol
i get so excited when i find titles that i know about
I can see why the office is so loved. But. I just don’t like the setting and tone of the show. Friends is an escapist watch for me, and I like the laugh track because it feels like i have friends of my own that are watching and laughing with me.
B99 is so heavily inspired by the office and yet feels like it’s own thing. It’s about the next best thing. And also what we do in the shadows. A very very underrated mockumentary show
100% agreed!!!🙌🙌
it's not a mockumentary though
What we do in the shadows is pure gold. If you loved office you'll ❤️ it too
Although b99 has been getting a little repetitive with their 'exaggeration comedy'
I believe that the director of The Office and Brooklyn 99 is the same. (Michale Schur)
Rachel likes to shop
And Monica likes to clean
And Phoebe's wacky
And Chandler's sarcastic
And Ross is awkward
And Joey liKES TO FUCC
Lol
I was really hoping it would say “AND JOEY DOESNT SHARE FOOD”
Olivia S lmao me too
Ross likes to get married
I'd like to point out that I was the one who gave you 1k likes
i absolutely adore both shows in a different way
It’s amazing none of the cast memeber in friends were comedians and yet did comedy so well and so effectively physical and timing and tone😂😂🤗I love it!!
the awkwardness, facial expressions, and timing of the office makes it so much better
This is literally the entire office
Like Toby
there's a reason why The Office has much more quality memes compared to FRIENDS. I mean what do they got besides the "Chandler laughing" meme slapped with boomer humors from Facebook?
It’s the quality of the cringe for me. I can literally feel it through the screen
How the awkwardness is better!! It just make you feel awkward like them sooo uncomfortable
This is my favorite ted talk ever
This has no replies? But so many likes

In the Office everyone is literally a walking meme
the way i watched this ENTIRE video without realising that Drew Gooden made this
Honestly, I just stop hearing the laugh track when I watch shows. That 70s show, How I met your mother, Friends, etc. I like those shows even if they have that one annoying detail
Roberta Trevino woah I guess I do too cause I don’t remember that 70s had a laugh track
Himym was a huge disappointment, it could've been the best comedy show if it werent for that last season..
And also I watched himym before friends and when I watched friends I discovered himym copied too many episodes from friends
how i met your mother has laugh tracks? if it does i do not remember lmao
Honestly, yeah. I don’t even notice the laugh tracks lmao.
I completely forgot himym has laugh tracks
Laugh tracks are a remnant of the theatre age, from which television was born. They don't think you're stupid, they just thought you would like to feel like you were sitting in an audience. It's a generational thing.
Nope ,they are just finding way to roast other show.
This is correct.
He has every right to think it's stupid. It's a generational thing, and this generation may not like it. Just like how older generations pick on the young, younger generations have the right to pick on the old.
@@anastasiao4036 🤦♀️this comment is saying that just because shows include laugh tracks, it doesn't mean they think the viewer is stupid
And i do like them. And i like the big bang theory
You are the best UA-camr to me. Such an effortlessly funny man .
Omg I watched this whole video without realizing it was Drew Gooden's. You're format has changed a lot! Really good surprise and really good video

I’d say himym instead
Omggggg yessss!
i like that youre honest and not someone who just has to bash something in an objective way. This was a good video and it made me laugh. Well done sir
i was 12:55 seconds in before i realized this was drew. i’m listening while doing other stuff so this whole time i’ve been like “i wonder what other stuff this channel does i should check it out”
like how did i not realize 😂
Drew just did a 180 from reaction videos to a video essay and it didn't feel weird.
Rise Of The Kumquat not just a video essay, but specific Nerdwriter vibes. If it’s a genuine presentation shift or even just a thoughtful parody, it’s still well-done.
Chandler was the best thing that happened to friends
He really is by far the best character. He shows the most growth and is always hilarious.
He was pretty great, but after he starts to wear glasses he kind of gets worse. I loved his character in the beginning, but as an overall character (for me/in my opinion) Joey is the best. Phoebe a close second? Chandler is hilarious for a lot of the show though
@@N7C_25.0 LMAO, Joey is far from the best. I love him don't get me wrong. But Joey doesn't evolve as a character, he's the same in the first seasons and is the same when the show ends.
@@beinerthchitivamachado874 That's true. I guess I just like the fact his jokes don't change:/ I know he doesn't have much character development, but I still like his character the most :[
I love how sarcastic he is
"you were in the parking lot earlier that's how i know you" that line always kills me
The office has so many jokes that every time I watch it I discover something new that I had missed last time because how subtly it was weaved into the show.
Including tons of background gags--little parts of the set that are never made into explicit punchlines.

It was supposed to fall out of Stanley’s pockets when Micheal hugs him in Goodbye Micheal. But the writers decided it didn’t fit his character.
This is the first time I've seen this particular video (and idk how I missed it when I've seen most of Drew's videos), and I really enjoyed it a lot.
As someone who does not like Friends OR The Office, I can still appreciate the ways these particular shows advanced the comedy genre.
Parks and Recreation is my favorite show, but I do thank The Office for getting popular enough to bring the docucomedy genre to life! Also they had the same writers lol.
Liked for the pie chart where the majority was "Ross whines"

friends didn't use a laugh track. the show was filmed live and the laughter you are hearing is from the live audience
Yes!!! Exactly. I knew I saw that somewhere but I wasn’t sure if I dreamt it or made it up.
The writers even went back and rewrote the jokes if the audience didn’t laugh enough so it was like a little “test” whether it was funny.
"I don't know anybody who actually liked the Big Bang Theory"
Nervous laughter intensifies...
In my opinion office is for ppl who lean to like sarcastic comedy and friends is for ppl who lean to like old kind of comedy with the pauses and sketches... It doesn't mean that any is bad, it's as usual depends on taste
friends is a living single ripoff and it’s like the one thing I know I’m being terrible for judging people who like it, yet here I am.
@@kaymills696 Dude, people can like different things. Also, I have to mention, if you know you're being terrible by saying this.
*Then why even say it?*
Lana Mcdwell I love sarcastic humour but i think i prefer friends probably because i grew up watching it but I dunno i never thought the office was that funny like i cant sit through an entire episode and i dont know why
christine fitz It’s probably because the worst seasons of the office are the first and the seasons after michael leaves. the office is at its peak in season 2,3,4, and 5.
Friends is famous for Chandler’s sarcastic jokes & behaviour
Can I take a moment to point out the highest rated episode of Breaking Bad is also Season 5 Episode 14
Yajjat Sekhsaria ozymandias is amazing, my two favorite eps in all of breaking are that and Felina

Coco Taveras breaking bad

It ain’t as good as felina tho

Did anyone read the description and just realised Drew gooden doesn't think Courtney Cox can act?!!
Personally I find her to be a good performer though she's not as strong as Lisa Kudrow or David Schwimmer.
