A reminder! I forgot to mention Down Tilt in this guide, it's really good for popping your opponent up at high % and can lead into down air, up air, forward air. So use dtilt! Thank you guys for watching and happy holidays! :D
Also bomb throws/item throws in general have different distances depending on if you smash or tilt throw them. If you play tilt stick and use that to throw the item won't go as far! Make sure you practice both. Tilt throws are a bit slower and good for approaches. Smash throws are usually better or following up a move so it reaches them faster.
Jtails, can you talk a little more about the tether grab? I know you covered that Young Link has it at 9:55, but is it shorter than Link's old tether? I have trouble with the angles and spacing which makes me miss the ledge during most attempts. Curious if it's longer than what you get trying to grab an opponent or I'm just too far away.
Good stuff Jtails! I'm a young link player and I felt satisfied with this guide (except down tilt, but you already went over that). I think it's important to mention how young link's up throw will kill most characters around 190% because his kill power is so lacking, there will be times when he gets opponents up to that high percentage. Keep up the great content and awesome job at Don't Park on the Grass
I sincerely, not sarcastically, love the odd mix of genuine good advice while frequently screwing it up on screen. It's honest, and shows trust in what you have to say even if you haven't perfectly mastered it technically yet. Some added context about things that were tripping you up: point blank bomb shots pop the opponent back instead of forward, so you'll accidentally cross yourself up before you learn to respond to it. On the ground, I believe a usmash becomes available. Aerially, not sure. Bomb recovery won't really bring you back further than you could make it back on your own because young link's recovery is naturally good. What it really shines at imo is insurance vs. gimps, which is difficult to demonstrate in training room. Amazing work showing the z drop aerial combos. What an interesting technique.
Wow, this video makes YL look like the best character in the game lmao Good stuff! I really feel like this is one of the best tutorial videos for a char out there right now.
Thomandy but in exchange for that lack of ko power he has damage out the wazoo. Getting someone to 160 with YL feels the same as getting someone to 120 with most other characters.
Thomandy if you wanna beat people like ganondorf you need to zone. You can not let him get in because ganondorfs entire strategy is based off of getting 1 hit off and then running, rinse and repeat. If you just combo projectiles you should win that watch up. I personally never found it to be hard.
Thanks for the tips! I play young Link but I can only do basic moves and combos so I’m pretty bad. I actually learned alot of new strategies and combos!
You are by far the best smash you tuber out there. Your tech and knowledge of the game and analysis are so informative, so useful for getting into the competitive scene or getting into characters in the game! Man I would love an inkling analysis because man inkling is becoming one of if not my favorite character in the game along with Mario and diddy XD
Yes! I feel like zero Has really great analysis in data and what is viable, what’s not and Izaw has competitive guides and have great videos on the art of smash series which is a really good series to know everything you need to know about smash! All of these channels are awesome in their own rights.
Jensen Drake he’s not better just different but check out Vermanubis he’s the best Ganondorf in the world or at least one of the best and his videos are supremely philosophical and highly analytical without overthinking things like combo variations or neutral setups
I love your tutorials man, great freaking job. You explain everything so well and you take your time, nothing feels rushed like other You-tubers. You have my sub, I hope you make an Inkling guide soon, I can’t wait!
with a bomb you can ledge guard players by launching them, getting a bomb out, and spin attacking (up b) towards them. then the bomb will blow you up allowing you to up b back to the stage.
Something you forgot to mention as well is that when your off stage and up b while holding a bomb you don't lose your jump after the explosion allowing for even greater recovery distances
I’m starting to main young link so learning new combos helps me, I have my own combo to, this combo is down air at the hip to up air, if on a longe stage use up b, side b then neutral b, dash attack, up tilt, repeat
Dude I just subbed to you! This is VERY helpful for me as I play Young Link a lot! Also, I do like that you breakdown everything there is to know about the character! I hope you do Richter cuz I do sometimes play as him as my 2nd option. Keep up the great work! :)
Before getting ultimate I was planning to main young link and I was surprised how almost every guide mostly covered kill setups and high percentage combos like 100% and up. And now that I experienced some matches I knew that young link can get his opponent to 100% quickly if his player was good at low percent combos which can be done naturally in a very small amount of time of aggressive and attentive play and he mostly struggled with kill setups which can mostly be done at least at 100%.
can we get an isabelle tutorial? haven’t been able to find a good one! great video btw, keep it up :) much improved from your old smash 4 tutorials. definitely subscribed
When you are ledge guarding with up b try holding the control stick down during the up b and that will prevent you from grabbing the ledge and interrupting the up b animation
i tried using the bomb/arrow to fair combo. got most of my kills from that.also thanks for explaining that y.link has to pack on the damage. i was trying to play him like regular link. that block into up b works too. once again thx
I love Young Link but this man has a very hard time KO’ing. I feel like he needs a slight buff on certain moves so they can kill at least a LITTLE better.
I dreamt that Young Link's design might follow in the footsteps of Hyrule Warriors and let us morph into Fierce Deity. Reminicent of Zelda's Melee version.
I've never played Link or Toon Link in Smash Brawl or 4. But, me personally feel like sword Characters do better with the new short hop feature so that's why I main ike in ssbu when I used to play Pikachu and Mewtwo in ssb4. Now I want to learn young link because he seems extremely fast just like ssb4 Pikachu.
I’ve gotten better with staying under them and keeping them in the air with up tilts and up airs and such but I do have trouble doing this with characters that use a very fast falling down air... (the best 3 examples I can think of with this are Toon Link, Corrin, and Mr. Game & Watch) how do you trump their down airs?
Hey my man can you do adult Link next with some things to practice and drill? I will be taking some tips from this vid since it’s almost the same but Link, I feel, is different enough for a separate vid lol
I am so unsure if I want to pick up Young Link or Link as my main. I saw where you placed them on your tier list, but you said the reason was that you hadn't seen a lot of good adult Link matches. I love this tutorial, could you please make on of adult Link as well?
Cloud Galaxy when I was in practice mode I tried and I couldn’t get f smash but I could get up b and up tilt which can kill at higher percentages. You can bomb into down air if you just want a kill setup with dair.
Cloud Galaxy bair 1 combos into reverse up smash(I don’t think it combos into f-smash tho) and I’m not sure if d-tilt combos into down air but I’m 100% certain it combos into foward air at basically all percents (within reason). Edit: but getting the first hit of bair into up smash is an extremely situational combo and honestly isn’t really usable in a real game. On the other hand dtilt -> fair is invaluable and basically the same as bomb -> fair except it trades range for speed (start up mostly)
I'm thinking of using young link or toon link as a character to learn the basics in smash. I was going with Ike (succesfully) but I like some projectiles to learn how those feel and which options they give as well. Would either of these be a good choice? I'm the type of newbie who's just good enough to consistently beat lvl 7 cpus, working on techniques like short hop fast fall aerials (not the auto-option) and b-reverses (which is why I want to try out a character with projectiles as well).
VenomousSnake37 when you say both, do you mean press 2 buttons that are mapped to jump? In my case I have jump set at x and R, so do I press both before quickly pressing b?
I've seen some Young Links placing bombs on the ground near the ledge. How do you gently set bombs on the ground? They always explode when I throw or drop them!
@@Da_damm Thanks! I actually figured it out right before getting your response. You can also throw them gently and they will just sit on the stage. I've seen people drop through platforms and leave the bomb on the platform which is pretty cool, I'm going to have to try that out.
Hey could you do a Ness tutorial? I saw you play him a tournament recently and thought the character looked super fun. Ness's recovery always confuses me tho
Charlie Lu practice with PK thunder. Once you get it down, it is so valuable. It can launch you and really help with attacking your opponents. Go to the training mode and work on aiming and moving the PK thunder blast. Once you get it, It’s a feel. You’ll begin to understand. At first it’s confusing and challenging.
@JTails can you give advice on combos or attacks to AVOID using with Young Link? I was playing with a high level player and he mentioned that Most characters but especially Young Link almost never want to use a smash attack unless it’s an absolute confirmed kill (I use it to punish sometimes too) because he said after a smash attack ur post-smash pose is vulnerable to attack for a few frames. He said it’s especially bad with young Link because YL is not that physically strong of a character and it takes more attacks to rack up damage. Do u have any other tips similar to this?
what that guy was talking about is called "endlag", or just lag. You cant move until an attack is complete, and stronger moves usually have more time that you can't move after them, or more lag. So it's not really good to use big smash attacks a lot because they have lots of lag, which good players will take advantage of. Like he said, only use smash attacked when they're guaranteed, and try to use quicker moves like nair and back air which have much less lag, aka being "safer".
Could you do lucario? He seems really buffed in this game, honestly would love to learn, for now I spam nairs and side B when at high percent (the range is really good, specially in the air)
Aye Jtails I just picked up Young link today, I think short hop down fall fair into ftilt is a true combo. I also think down fall fair may be safe, not sure
Jtails, I was wanting to ask you what you think of using b-stick with young link. I mained young link in melee and got really good with him. In project M I picked up toon link, but used B-sticking for extremely easy wavebounces. All you had to do is jump forward and hit back on the c-stick. It was a great movement option. Now in Ultimate, I have my old favorite character with the option to B-stick. Wavebounces are made really easy, but its not as easy as PM. You have to do like a few frames back on the c-stick to get it, otherwise you just run around. So I guess I am wondering what your thoughts are on that, like if its worth it to get consistent wavebounces, or if the sometimes accidental turn around inputs would be too detrimental. I can send a video of what I mean if you want, its hard to explain. I think B-sticking with young link can open up a lot of doors with him personally.
I think that learning wave bounces manually has a lot of merit and it opens up the cstick to a lot of tilt options that you might be sacrificing. If this is what you're comfortable with for many years though then it might be worth it to stick with what you know and that might work better for you. I can't tell you how to play, only make suggestions but comfort-ability is high on the priority list.
How do u short hope easily with a pro controller I’m kinda new player played casually back in smash 4 but I don’t have a GameCube controller and probably just going to keep my pro controller
as a toon link ex main i truly find it worse, i had to move to young link cuz he’s better in speed, frame data, way better arrow, his boomerang comes out in less frame than toon link’s, i find toon link to be really slow in comparison but have a stronger fair, f smash which both can kill earlier than Y Link, Y link downthrow or upthrow to up air is true combo while T Link isn’t :’( so even if i prefer T Link i had to move on, he’s kinda irrelevant now
I also used to main toon link in smash 4 but I really don't like him in ultimate cuz of the universal hit stun nerfs and his movement overall feels really weird compared to smash 4 his frame data is also just much worse than young links
I mained Toon Link in Brawl and I still do in ultimate. But I’m not a hardcore competitive player at all (I don’t even use the online because I’m so much of a single player gamer, I STILL don’t see it as worth the money. Not unless they add N64 and GameCube games to the online service thing like the Virtual Console was supposed to have) and I barely even played Smash 4, the single player in that was sooooo much hot garbage that I actually returned the game to the store before the dlc characters were even done being released.
Dash > turnaround > while you're in turnaround animation, press c-stick towards the direction you were facing during your dash. You should slide while tossing the bomb.
I cant use that down a und than double jump to recover. I practiced it as shown in the video but in 95% the down a is active for so long that I cant get up again. Is there a trick to cancel the move or is it just easier if it hits.
its a super long lasting move, you usually die if you use it offstage too low. If it hits its much easier to recover because you bounce a bit. Try using it a bit higher, or use neutral A (A with no direction) instead
Thanks for the guide! I'm still looking for a main and Young Link looks like a ton of fun to play. Couple questions for anyone that can answer, though: Is there a way to reverse fire arrows while retreating without bouncing? I tried different timings and I always seem to bounce forwards. Is there a way to buffer bombs while DI'ing when I get thrown off-stage? It's probably just a matter of timing it better, but the bomb always seems to explode when I'm too far down.
Not sure about bomb buffering, I'd just spam b and hold down after DI. For retreating arrows, run, jump, immediately tap and release the opposite direction, then immediately press b. The timing for when you press B is pretty quick so keep that in mind.
@@jordonroy6574 It is a good video, it has great insights and it is definitely worth watching, but I don't feel like I will come back when I feel compelled to practice or something like that. IMO a tutorial/competitive guide would be something along the lines of what IzawSmash does on his videos, straight to the point, good editing and a few examples. If I am practicing bomb setups for example, I just have to the section that he talks about it and shows the examples. This video on the other hand is just Jtails casually playing and explaining what he is doing and why, with basically no editing. Like I said before, this is a good video, but i feel like Jtails could do it way better, and I mean it in a good way.
A reminder! I forgot to mention Down Tilt in this guide, it's really good for popping your opponent up at high % and can lead into down air, up air, forward air. So use dtilt!

Bombs knock the opponent slightly forwards if they're thrown from a distance, if you throw it next to them, they'll go slightly behind you.
Why didnt you mention dtilt?

Good video
Could you do a toon link tutorial?
I really need that! Yink and Tink are so different!
Yeyeyeyeyeyeye
Do a grown link one
I miss jump cancel toss. ;_; No more stylish toon link stuff. Do you think toon Link is better or worse than he was in Smash 4?
as a toon link ex main i truly find it worse, i had to move to young link cuz he’s better in speed, frame data, way better arrow, his boomerang comes out in less frame than toon link’s, i find toon link to be really slow in comparison but have a stronger fair, f smash which both can kill earlier than Y Link, Y link downthrow or upthrow to up air is true combo while T Link isn’t :’( so even if i prefer T Link i had to move on, he’s kinda irrelevant now
btw jump cancel toss called glide toss isn’t dead, it’s just automatic now when you throw a bomb while you’re on a dash animation
You should slide while tossing the bomb.
i amstruggleing to short hop i have to tapthe button for lessthan a tenth of a second to do one whitch i need to put the game-cube controller doun
"smashing me from the back" 9:02
Why when I try to do an areial out of shield with young link i get z-air? I hold shield and press jump+A at same time.
release shield when you press jump+ a
I cant use that down a und than double jump to recover.
PIT/DARK PIT!
Thanks for the guide! I'm still looking for a main and Young Link looks like a ton of fun to play. Couple questions for anyone that can answer, though:
Is there a way to reverse fire arrows while retreating without bouncing? I tried different timings and I always seem to bounce forwards.
Is there a way to buffer bombs while DI'ing when I get thrown off-stage? It's probably just a matter of timing it better, but the bomb always seems to explode when I'm too far down.
Not sure about bomb buffering, I'd just spam b and hold down after DI. For retreating arrows, run, jump, immediately tap and release the opposite direction, then immediately press b. The timing for when you press B is pretty quick so keep that in mind.
So side THEN B instead of B then side
Can you make a Zelda one? Thank you. Merry Christmas.
I watched this and istantly won my next battle. It was a level 7 cpu, but still
Yessss let's go!!
More like young link competitive chit chat. good video nonetheless.
Pablo Tavares I don’t even understand what this means. Are you implying that this isn’t a guide? I’m genuinely lost
