- This video explains all the optimal Young Link combos, with the exception of some platform extensions. For me, optimal means balancing between high damage / kill potential, high reliability & consistency (works versus almost all characters and works on DI) and a good resulting advantage state. With this in mind, I explain all the optimal combo routes for all the combo starters on grounded opponent.

Hivesteel, something I would like to add to your optimal young link combo video is if you get up b, into back air into back air off stage and you don't wanna suicide up b you can b reverse fire arrow and its not very consistant but if its not that far off stage it can bait out a punish able air dodge and if its far off stage it puts them into a terrible position while getting you closer to being back on stage.
Listen to this man!! If you think the turnaround arrow is too risky, b-reverse instead and you might get extra dmg while staying safe!

Thanks.. I just tried Young Link right now. Not sure if I am a big fan yet. The first few were cpu and I lost the first 3 and won the rest. I still don't have combos yet. Just checking him out and seeing how he feels. Played with his projectiles a bit. Now is to learn combos. I can be good in projectiles. But.. I still need to practice and learn these combos. Also, I didn't like his T-Rex hurtboxes. I got used to big Link and his range. It felt off for me and I was losing against Shiek on exchanges and range. Yup.. that happened.
Edit: Bomb was something I liked with Link in Smash 4. I wasn't bad at it and was good at the timing parts to lead into stuff. Granted I did have too much fun with it. But still.. really fun.

Double hit down air then up air can lead to some good arial strings mid combo
I've decided to pick up Young link because he seems like a fun character. Amazing work on this guide, I honestly did not expect this level of detail. I'm a Sheik main and while Void has god something similar for Sheik (90 minute combo lecture) I haven't seen this kind of dedication for any other character, really great stuff!
P.S. Just my curiosity but what is your GSP currently? Even if you don't care about online, I'm just curious. I think it would be hell to play against your Young Link lol

My gsp isn’t that high, around 11.7 mil when I played last weekend. online is good for forcing practice on specific stuff.
Gotdamn this vid opened my eyes at how underbaked my punish game is. I am capable of so much more, but I tend to go for basic nair/uair/ftilt finishers instead of really maximizing my openings.

yes absolutely
I still use a Y for short hopping but use shoulder way more
Combine this with XLR8's combo guide, and use these when you dont feel safe, that way you can still get the cool creative combo's, now I consistently get at least one 60% damage combo clip a game thanks!! also a way I found that made the bair more consistent from low % down tilt is attack cancel bair instead of instant rar
The XLR8 guide is the best one there is rn for playing around platform.
Also check out my IRAR video, IRAR can be the same as attack cancel (in terms spacing and speed) but with extra flexibility so it’s worth grinding a bit :)

Jesus Christ these people are playing on a whole mother level. I understand the words and the language and the definition but stringing then all together in the combos is like “wait what does bair do again? What’s down tilt, oh yeah, it’s down a but just the one side”

It’s not really random but it is definitely hard to predict!

Bomb has 4 hits, depends on where the bomb is relative to the opponents hitbox on the last hit. So the previous hits combined with where the bomb thrown, bomb momentum and the opponents momentum can all impact the launch direction
Hey man ty for the guide! Just wondering if a yl main can help me. Let's say you use an attack cancel backair to hit the first Backair at low %. Do you just use jump c stick backair for the rest of the back air chain or do u have to keep doing attack cancel backairs? I'm slowly getting used to getting 4back air true combo vs like samus. But it's tough to keep up the inputs.
In my experience: the second BAir you can do normally: short hop buffered BAir (Jump+Cstick or Jump+A+Left analog stick). There’s no need to attack cancel since you’re facing the correct direction.
Then the 3rd and maybe 4th you NEED to IRAR. You absolutely need to dash forward a little bit to catch up to them, then do the back air. So IRAR is your only option.
From the man himself!:) Ahh yeah I've played less than 6months and am trying to get better than someone whom spent many years of their childhood/teenage years playing. Huge mountain to climb haha. I struggle with young links range so I need to combo more to get more out of the hits that I finally connect. Trust me to pick a very technical character as my main when new to the game haha. Love YL though.
Any Bair cbain tutorials? I'm having trouble chaining them together without turning around
I could make a short vid but basically it’s just IRAR rising BAir > fast fall > repeat. You can adjust dash distance and drift for consistency but otherwise there’s not much more to it
hi, what is TA arrow (other than shoot arrow?) ? what does TA mean.
TurnAround Arrow! You change your direction without changing your momentum.
Never heard of tilt and smash boomerang... How do you input each of those?
Same as tilt and smash attack! If you angle forward slightly OR hold forward for a little while and press B, you'll get tilt input. If you press forward and B together you'll get a smash input.

Can slingshot be an alternative to IRAR for the combo of young links?
I think slingshot is not a big help for combos, it’s more for pressure strings and neutral movement, check my slingshot video

I feel u, I show the inputs on my Tech tutorial series and it takes SO LONG to set up, so I can't imagine doing it for 30 hours of combo. I could do shorts showing specific combos' inputs but not sure there's enough interest
How do you arrow after bair?? I always face the wrong direction
during back air end lag you just need to press B + direction you want to face to buffer a turnaround arrow

He’s a bit weird because he’s strong versus some top tiers but has bad matchups and general consistency problem. Strong for sure, often seen in the ~top 25, so mid-high tier.
How can I Fair them Bair fast and consistently?
make sure you fast fall the fair (JUST before the FAir2 is optimal but just after FAir2 also works) then full hop IRAR back air, adjusting your dash distance based on DI, %, opponent's character..
Brother, I'm having the exact same issue. I've been playing Smash since 1999 -- I don't feel like a noob, I suppose, and am currently in Elite Smash -- and yet for the life of me stringing together a bunch of Bair's is nigh impossible. And that's in training; the idea of ever attempting to link together Bair's in an actual battle is laughable.

@@hivesteel Great video! This is extremely hard to do from a stationary position! After you do one IRAR bair, what do you do input to get another bair going so it combos? Do you fast fall, press a ( Or do you have like a shoulder botton input for attack or something like that)?
yeah I bair->fast fall->buffer dash during landing lag->turnaround+jump+bair when dash actually comes out..
it’s not easy but once you get the rhythm it’s very doable. Also for the 3rd/4th bair you have to dash longer to catch them so it becomes actually easier and IRAR’s flexibility shines

Make sure you fast fall the fair correctly then IRAR back air

I stopped playing young link because I couldn't do the combos. Without the combos young link is easily top 5 most toxic characters in the game

i hate being that guy, but down tilt fair isn't true at 0 percent...
also just di'ing down and away would probably decimate a lot of the combos you've demonstrated...
hilt dtilt > fair is true unless they have a frame 1 or frame 2 air dodge and you frame trap them anyway~
tip dtilt combos are definitely ruined by good DI out but they have to react very quickly. Hilt dtilt combos and most other stuff in here are not so affected.
