We’re back with another episode of Common Design Mistakes! I have a playlist that touches on every room in the home. Please let me know which rooms I should do next! Thank you for watching! 💕
Julie, you’ve somewhat touched on what I would like to see. I would like to see you take more examples of design mistake rooms and show us how you would fix them-from the most minor changes that cost little or no money to more in depth changes requiring some money investment. I would like to actually see how the room is transformed with each change.
I’m coming back stronger than ever this year Peggy! I totally feel you and working with my team to create more incredible transformations so you can see all the possibilities no matter what conditions you’re starting with 🙌🏻
I'd like to see you take some rooms and rearrange them, shift the accessories around and show us how to work with what we already have. What to keep, what to donate away and what to replace - and how to shop for specific pieces to finish a room.
It seems like it would be easy to decorate a fabulous room with high ceilings, massive windows, a spectacular fireplace, and beautiful wood floors. ...I'd like to see how to decorate a small windowless room with no architectural interest. (my sad little home office)
Julie, I love that you showed Real Homes in the examples! My living room has turned into a filler museum of hand me downs ! I did get rid of the 80s entertainment center Geeze looks better already. Nothing on the walls tho , this video has inspired me Thanks so much
Watching this video felt like having a design-savvy friend giving valuable advice; the examples were eye-opening, and I now feel more confident in making the right choices to enhance the overall look and feel of my home.
Hi Julie, I would love to see more videos for creating a mudroom for small spaces. I saw the shoe storage one but was wondering if you can touch on aspect ratios for the furniture in the mudroom/ entryways.
Just watched this video and found it to be extremely helpful. I LOVE furniture and tend to impulse buy, ending up with too much furniture. I think it is time I refine my seating thanks so much for the inspiration
Thank you for all the valuable content. Definitely no “fillers”, all quality. I’m not a designer and so am not sure how to implement some of your suggestions. But, you do effectively show me where I need design help. Help!
I've been discovering your videos and am learning so much! I've never done much interior design, so it's helping me see how my home can be so much better. Than you!!
Wow this video is a must-watch for anyone wanting to spruce up their space. The examples and the explanations make it easy for even design novices like me to understand and improve the overall look and feel of our homes.
On point on every aspect! Dysfunctional spaces, all matchy-matchy, cluttered spaces are without a doubt an eye sore. Copy and Paste designs are an eye-sore as well. Our home should showcase our personality and unless you are by yourself there is no excuse for all to be white or beige or a combination of both. It doesn't need to be expensive, you don't need to buy everything at once, you don't need to buy everything every time a designer drops a new collection. Love your videos!
Thank you for these tips. I'm furnishing a space from scratch and have found myself with a couple of 'issues'. While watching this I realised the sofa arrangement I had initially envisioned for this space would not form a functional seating group, so I'm going to orient the seats a few different ways to make a conversation area. I don't have to run myself ragged trying to find a gold sink + faucet to match golden drawer pulls, or give up a beloved old console because I can't find a coffee table / end tables to match its mixed wood finish, or have grey walls and curtains to match a set of grey sofas I was gifted. Unfortunately I can't do much about said set of sofas (couch + love seat + armchairs, all 1 colour and style, that seats 7 😮 ). Now I just need to figure out how to squeeze a dining table in here 😂
Personally, I found the video's practical advice super helpful. It's not just about what to avoid but also provides simple solutions to elevate your home's aesthetic. I appreciate how it breaks down common mistakes, making it easy for someone like me to understand and implement changes.
Filler furniture! That’s what it’s called! I have so many of these pieces. For me they are the little tv carts with the broken wheels. 🤣 I somehow collected a few of these. I think various roommates or family members left them over the years and they ended up with us.
Haha that’s what I call it. It’s not an industry term by any means 😅 But that’s how it happens! One day you look up and your home is a breeding ground for castoffs. 😂
Hi Julie As a seasoned homeowner I have acquired pieces that I did not expect. And yes I consider them filler furniture. But as I am resourceful soul I found ways to upgrade the pieces to eliminate the dated look. And now I like the way I did them and don’t want to give them away. And I use them. But I see that there will be no need for them and at that point I will give them away. I do not have any emotional connection to them. This makes it easy. I appreciate the short form today! Lots of info in a little bit of time. It would be great if you would do this for each room in the house. 🥰🥰🥰Margaret
Oh I never thought of doing this for every room in the house, but I love the idea! I will start my lists now Margaret! Thank you for the wonderful suggestion, you know me so well 🩷💕
Best part about this video is the suggestions are low cost or free. It’s free to rearrange your existing art or get rid of excess stuff. Buying a bag of hardware is not a renovation. It’s cheap to spray paint them an appropriate color. You didn’t suggest that, but I remember that tip from somewhere. Thought I would share.
Absolutely. I talked about spray painting hardware in a previous video. Pro tip- don’t forget to spray sealer last or else the finish will chip easily 👍🏻
To me, it is overwhelming to be in a place where every single corner has something on it. I grew up in places like that and I was convinced that minimalism was my favorite style. Then I started following some amazing decorators online and learned the decorative items I liked and, little by little, developed my home into a place where I feel good and inspired. It works wonders to my mental health and even helps me to keep things tidy and organized. Thank you for such great content, as usual. ❤❤❤
I feel the same way. I used to like so much stuff, now I pare it down with things I LOVE and still layer them in ways that feel collected, yet meaningful 🩷
Hi Julie Your video just came in a right time for me after two years with my filler sofa is time to replace it It is taking too much space in my sitting room and nobody seats there. I am going to replace with just one armchair to give a better flow to the space Thank you so much
An excellent video, thank you! I'd love to see a video on the basics...where to start. When you buy a home you are starting with the bare bones and like you said "does this suit my style?" > if not you need to change things or nothing will ever look coordinated. Assuming the home "meets our style", I'd love to see where to start. Furniture layout (using what you have) , picking the right room for the job, once furniture is laid out then what ? Rugs then walls? Neither? Painting ...first ? Window treatments...early or last touch? Thanks so much!
I have an entire series spawned from the first video- how to create your dream space. Check it out, over 10 jam-packed episodes when you’re starting with a blank slate 🤗
Thank you for watching Mary! Some of my favorite professional designers aren’t formally trained either, it’s what they bring to the table that counts 🙌🏻🤗💕
Julie's University was in session..I'm here taking notes. The seating priority is essential for success..Matchy Matchy should be eliminated..Cohesiveness is a gamechanger...Less is more..💯💯👍👍
the room with the red and white curtains with the extra furniture. I like the red color, but when I saw this room the first thing my eyes set on was them, and I was shouting "take those things off the window now" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I have fun watching this video. Can you please make more videos about small apartments and how to make them look cozy and fresh.
so what would you do to a livingroom that has monochromatic brown tones you see in old bars but want to balance that without greens blues, whites and purples unless they're plants (natural) while keeping it semi low sensory and not as if it's from an Ikea magazine? I don't mind using metal tones.
I love warm brass and matte black metal against warm woods. Add in a small colorful art piece and pull the colors from the art as accents. Find a print that you love, but with enough contrast to shake things up a bit. Doesn’t have to be huge, even a 16x20 would do on a small wall 👍🏻
Seating arrangements means everything in event panning too in my opinion. It’s one of the most stressful things I go through. And Im not an event planner, just have a large family
Hi Julie. I recently discovered your videos which inspire me. I bought a dark brown double recliner on sale for my small living room which has a weird layout. It looked great in the huge store but is overwhelming in my living room. I call it the monolith and I hate it. I may try to sell it. It won't work in any other room. Do you have any suggestions? I tried a bright green throw which helps a little. Thank you. Love your videos.
Can you give some advice on seating in a open living space where you don't want to obstruct view or walking paths? We have a sectional but I'm worried about adding seat on other side as it'll be in the walking path (in between dining and living)
My lounge is impossible to arrange with windows, French doors, walk ways on 2 sides, doorways, and the wood heater (and space for wood boxes). The TV has to cover part or all of a window or the doors or be put in a walkway with some electrical work. If it was put on that wall, the sofa would have to go in front of the fire or the sofas would be on an awful angle to the TV. I don’t need a conversation arrangement (but might have to trade in the extra 2 seater for a chair so there’s potential for a someone else) and always have the TV on for company so I like the couch to face it. It’s not a large area but would love a video on arranging a lounge room without it being a media room or have the sofas perpendicular to the TV. The walkways are orange timber and the lounge room is designated by old pink carpet so I can’t trick the eye until they are replaced. I’ve painted the walls white which has united what was the lower half in orange TnG with old cream on top. Love all the tips. My ex took all but one piece of the matching old wood furniture and the four recliners and I laughed so I could really decorate with new knowledge. I painted that piece and it’s much better now.
Haha now ex has to figure out what to do with all the matchy matchy furniture! 😂 Most of the time people get stuck with design because of filler furniture. You’re trying to make it work, but it can’t. It’s not scaled properly for the space so you end up using it anyways bc budget is limited. Use this time to “design” the best solution and source secondhand for the perfect fit. Might take a minute, but at least you’re one step closer to a beautiful and functional space🙏🏻✨
@@JulieKhuu Thanks Julie, I’m sure I’m not the only one in these situations. The only way to fix it is with knocking down all sorts of walls. Knowing that there’s no perfect solution to the layout gives me options to continually rearrange as long as I keep the internal doors and walkways clear. Ex doesn’t have a design cell in his body so that makes me laugh harder!
Julie, we bought 2 Terra Cotta Warriors while living in China and brought them back with us. They are now standing outside on our porch near the front door. We have been told that we should get rid of them because they are not good for Feng Shui. What is your opinion? Thanks
If you have an obstacle or conditions in which the street/ neighbors are harming your chi, the warriors may be beneficial. But if you already have great energy flowing into the home, then the warriors might be blocking it. Up to you to discern how the home feels ✨
I get caught up in permanent design that I can't change easily. My sofa pillow covers have subtle black stripes to go with the bronze items and oaks, greige but nothing else.
My biggest offense before was the artwork. I used to buy artwork pieces that catches my eye but doesn't necessarily go well with my other pieces. I was also guilty of furniture filler. When we moved to a smaller house I had to donate tons of decorative pieces and furniture. Looking back it really was a waste of a lot of money...and lesson learned.
@lydiadizon5549 Yep - been there! After learning my lesson the hard way, I now use photoshop to see what a new piece would look like in my room. It's a great way to see if the new art or furniture will work with your existing scheme. (there are free versions online - no need to buy software)
The biggest design mistake for me was moving too many times. As I acquired furniture and decor that was perfect for one space, I would end up moving to a new space where it no longer worked as well. It looks OK - but not great.
Yeah, that’s the conundrum. No one wants to buy all brand new pieces for a new space, the trick is buying what you LOVE. You will make it work and sell off/ donate the ho-hum pieces
....13 minutes after you've Posted this ! ...I'm here commenting ! Will update after I watch... 😊 This is so needed, Miss Julie... especially with the" Trends " that are often short lived and may well " bring down " the overall Vibe and Feel of ones living space . I am n o t a " Sectional type girl , lol.. I don't like them ...it limits Furniture Arrangements, and Lord knows, I'm rearranging my Rooms at least 3 times a year ! 😉😁..lol. I believe a Sofa , and two chairs of some type, will offer seating, and one could include an Ottoman ( or two) depending on thier size. I adore Wing Back Chairs, and Classic looks , that have something " unique " about them. ...whether it's a painted finish, design, or colour . And I am SO particular about Artwork, that I don't have a lot, ...but what I have is Artwork that says sonething about my Personal Style, and, as you stated... tells about part of " who you are ". I think more of these types of Videos, with maybe showing an After shot of " what's taken away, what's been replaced " ( the Magic of editing/ etc ,lol,) will give another Dinension to " what works, and w h y things work" to elevate ones Surroundings. 🙂😊 So well done, Miss Julie! 👏🏻💟
Thank you for watching and commenting first! 🌟🤗 I am rolling out more common design mistakes episodes for 2024 and going to play with AI to show more before and afters. As a designer, I don’t love how computer generated images take away the humanity behind all the work that goes into a beautifully designed space. BUT… as a content creator, I’m here for it! Ha! Oh the conundrum 😅
@@JulieKhuu My pleasure... I watch your Channel as much as possible! You are so kind to reply ,thank you ! .....Oh, I absolutely concur , with your Sentiments on AI. ..I think in relation to certain circumstances/ applications...it can be " ok " ...and yes, it can be a Conundrum! 😉😁😅 I also " don't love " Computer Generated images, for the same reasons you stated ... it takes away the human equation/ experience. .. I am hoping that there's a " Balance to be had ", but leans more towards the Human side of the Equation. 😊✨️💟
Break it up into different rooms. Nightstand in the bedroom, dresser can be used as a media console in the LR, side table can be used in the kids room as a nightstand etc…
Hey Julie, could you please clarify the part about "random artwork on the wall" please? You mentioned all the donts but didn't explain the do's lol. You said "consider what's in front of the art piece first, and then you can hang it with more purpose and intent." I don't get it lol. That sounded kinda vague, sorry. Been loving your channel since 2020, btw. 😘 xo
Random art: 1. No sentimental/ artistic value 2. Putting up big box store artwork just to fill up a “blank wall” 3. Not considering the vignette in front of it: seating group/ console/ accent furniture. Watch my video on how to create a focal point for specific details Jackie! So much to cover, I think you’ll love it 🤗
@@JulieKhuu Thanks for the clarification. And yeah, I've seen the focal wall video along with all of your other videos on the channel haha i love your content! 🫶
Thank you for the feedback Paula! May I ask if you’re watching on the TV, computer/laptop, with or without headphones? I want to work with my editor to perfect the sound and quality 🙏🏻☺️
What if you're a renter because you're too poor to ever own a home and if you don't even care about owning furniture because why bother move around heavy furniture from rental to rental. How do you design a cheap shack?
I used to rent and I had only what I really need my bed and one side table a nice lamp and a beautiful bed covers a chair to read and a beautiful plant in a corner some nice pictures , in my living room, I had a sofa and one chair nice cushions beautiful plants and a coffee table that I used for eating too , no problem I sat on cushions it fell like from another country like japan or Turkey fantastic and my tall book shelf some nice pictures it really looked pretty and cozy I made the effort to get the things I needed to be simple and good quality .
I've bought many beautiful and interesting home accessories from thrift shops. Then, because they only cost a few dollars each, I can just re-donate whenever I need to. I did this often when I hosted parties regularly - bought whatever suited my theme, then donated it back to the thrift store.
If you're a renter you're lucky if even the most basic things get fixed or updated ever... this channel is so out of touch with a lot of people's reality.
You can definitely change small things like knobs to personalize your space...if you're allowed to paint...that's a quick way to change your space. What have you tried?
Im a landlord of a single family home in Southern California . I allow "common sense" updates. Tenants can hang pictures, curtain rods , simple shelves. I freshen up btwn renters with neutral paint and steam clean flooring and carpet. I did charge a renter to repair drywall after they hung flat screen TV on a wall we did not approve. I promptly address repairs. I expect my tenants to respect and care for the home as if they own it , and i have had no issues.
I think some people think design is just for the wealthy, but I have seen some amazing furniture transformations on Lemons to Lemonade Furniture here on UA-cam. I think it would be cool if you two women did a zoom call to talk about furniture transformations on a budget and how to use design principles for best results.

So helpful
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻💕
14:51 Me thinking about some people I know lol.
@@JulieKhuu thank you so much
I get caught up in permanent design that I can't change easily.
My sofa pillow covers have subtle black stripes to go with the bronze items and oaks, greige but nothing else.
Which is when throw pillows and blankets come in handy. Nothing permanent nor expensive 👏🏻
@@JulieKhuu so true!!! ☺
Think of the time it took you to shop for all these pieces as well Lydia! Perspective changes everything and now we know 🙏🏻💕
Adobe is upping their game 👏🏻
@@nonawolf7495 Thank you
The biggest design mistake for me was moving too many times.
Vid on converting chaotic boho into visually organized maximalism.
Gonna need AI to help me with this one 😂
Deep dive into “hero pieces” please
Ooh that’s a good one, I’ll make a video! 🤗💕
Where did you get these pictures?!?
....13 minutes after you've Posted this ! ...I'm here commenting !
Will update after I watch... 😊
This is so needed, Miss Julie... especially with the" Trends " that are often short lived and may well " bring down " the overall Vibe and Feel of ones living space .
I think more of these types of Videos, with maybe showing an After shot of " what's taken away, what's been replaced " ( the Magic of editing/ etc ,lol,)
will give another Dinension to " what works, and w h y things work" to elevate ones Surroundings. 🙂😊
So well done, Miss Julie!
I also " don't love " Computer Generated images, for the same reasons you stated ... it takes away the human equation/ experience. .. I am hoping that there's a " Balance to be had ", but leans more towards the Human side of the Equation. 😊✨️💟
Most offensive is not enough maneuvering space so I bump elbow, hip, toe into furniture
Yup, too much furniture is a space killer!!
You said design mistake if all wood is same color, or it’s a catalog effect…how do you change it but keep IKEA/MCM furniture?
Break it up into different rooms. Nightstand in the bedroom, dresser can be used as a media console in the LR, side table can be used in the kids room as a nightstand etc…
Hey Julie, could you please clarify the part about "random artwork on the wall" please? You mentioned all the donts but didn't explain the do's lol. You said "consider what's in front of the art piece first, and then you can hang it with more purpose and intent." I don't get it lol. That sounded kinda vague, sorry. Been loving your channel since 2020, btw. 😘 xo
Random art:
1. No sentimental/ artistic value
2. Putting up big box store artwork just to fill up a “blank wall”
can you [;ease tell me about the wireless sconce you posted about not too long ago
Check out the video links under “How to light your home without outlets or hard wiring”

Thank you for watching Celine! ✨
Thanks Julie! Love your videos but sometimes I feel like you are yelling at me :)))
Thank you for the feedback Paula! May I ask if you’re watching on the TV, computer/laptop, with or without headphones? I want to work with my editor to perfect the sound and quality 🙏🏻☺️
I really love what you are saying, but these examples of mistakes are so horrible, I can't bear to watch
What if you're a renter because you're too poor to ever own a home and if you don't even care about owning furniture because why bother move around heavy furniture from rental to rental. How do you design a cheap shack?
Then you would be someone who is not into interior designing. Therefore that individual is simply wasting their time on this channel.
I have a great playlist for renters with budget-friendly hacks! Check it out ☺️
I used to rent and I had only what I really need my bed and one side table a nice lamp and a beautiful bed covers a chair to read and a beautiful plant in a corner some nice pictures , in my living room, I had a sofa and one chair nice cushions beautiful plants and a coffee table that I used for eating too , no problem I sat on cushions it fell like from another country like japan or Turkey fantastic and my tall book shelf some nice pictures it really looked pretty and cozy I made the effort to get the things I needed to be simple and good quality .
I've bought many beautiful and interesting home accessories from thrift shops. Then, because they only cost a few dollars each, I can just re-donate whenever I need to. I did this often when I hosted parties regularly - bought whatever suited my theme, then donated it back to the thrift store.
@@bglr2783why say such a cruel thing?! They are obviously interested or wouldn't be here.
If you're a renter you're lucky if even the most basic things get fixed or updated ever... this channel is so out of touch with a lot of people's reality.
You can definitely change small things like knobs to personalize your space...if you're allowed to paint...that's a quick way to change your space. What have you tried?
If it’s out of your reality then move on, why find the need to comment? Believe it or not is NOT out of touch with a lot of people’s reality.
Im a landlord of a single family home in Southern California . I allow "common sense" updates. Tenants
can hang pictures, curtain rods , simple shelves.
Thank you for watching Emma! I do appreciate your feedback, whether or not you agree. 522K viewers support my channel, I can’t be THAT out of touch 😝
You're just over-privileged maybe you should so something more useful for society. @@JulieKhuu
I think some people think design is just for the wealthy, but I have seen some amazing furniture transformations on Lemons to Lemonade Furniture here on UA-cam. I think it would be cool if you two women did a zoom call to talk about furniture transformations on a budget and how to use design principles for best results.
Ooh let me check out that channel, sounds super cool! Thank you for sharing Laura 🙏🏻💕
