This 4K-video with rich technological depth will show you the difference between the OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300m & the TUDOR Black Bay Ceramic and give you some useful information to better understand the only thing both divers have in common: the Master Chronometer certification by METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology.
Comparing OMEGA and TUDOR is like comparing apples and oranges. One cannot compare apples and oranges!
Whilst the OMEGA is a real luxury diver, the TUDOR is a very, very good diver, but not a luxury watch. TUDOR has a clear positioning below ROLEX and you must compare the brand to LONGINES and not OMEGA. OMEGA compares to ROLEX and ROLEX compares to OMEGA. TUDOR does NOT compare to ROLEX, therefore you cant compare TUDOR to OMEGA, with or without Master Chronometer certification.
The METAS Master Chronometer certification is comprehensive and covers the main functional characteristics of a watch including precision, resistance to magnetic fields, waterproofness and power reserve...
Please download the the process of certification of mechanical watches is in accordance with the METAS requirements N001 from the METAS homepage in English: www.metas.ch/metas/en/home/do...

Longines now is performing a group's strategy. They are not independent so they got a clear target. They would release an exclusive model from time to time vindicating that heritage. For sure!.

I'm late to this video, but thanks for posting, Alexander. I've been looking at both the Tudor and the Omega Black Black (which in the metal is surprisingly legible). The Tudor is stunning, possibly the only Tudor I'd consider, and for the price it can't be beaten - but the Omega really is something else... Hopefully as they come onto the secondary market, they'll be a little more affordable.
I also agree that Swatch needs to let Longines do what it does best (which for me is reinterpretations of its amazing back catalogue). Swatch also needs to let Breguet loose too - maybe both will end up in management buyouts like Girard Perregaux and Ulysses Nardin? I'm looking forward to those two brands' futures, and if Longines and Breguet followed suit, the results could be incredible.
Anyway, keep up the great content!

Great video, Alex. The first comment I have to make is that the PVD surfaces on the Black Bay will not age well. The first time any of those surfaces get knocked hard enough or scratched, it will expose the stainless steel underneath, ruining the total black aesthetic of the watch. The Omega on the other hand, made totally out of ceramic, much like it's Dark Side of the Moon cousin. Another impressive aspect is the differing shades of black and the alternating polished / brushed surfaces on the Seamaster. Much like the DSOTM, it's done perfectly. Black Bays are great in their own right but Omega Seamasters are "next level" watches IMO. Also, if Longines were to upgrade the the Hydroconquest Ceramic model to a chronometer, it would pose a serious challenge to the Black Bay. It's noteworthy that the Longines has a ceramic crown and bezel already, a well conceived model that could reach the next level if Longines chose to move in that direction.

I agree with you Alexander. Omega is on a different league to Tudor. But don't you think Rolex HQ used METAS certification as marketing tactic to suffocate Omega? And you're right, Swatch group can counter attack by "waking Longines up" and put the pressure back on Tudo. As to Rolex vs Omega, I currently own the 124300 OP and the build quality is very similar to the SMP 300. But I still believe Rolex is ahead in terms of "brand recognition" and "market share" and I don't think sales figures lie. Rolex have been market leaders since 2008, years before this "artificial" and "social media" hype.

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  3 роки тому +6

Of course this was a tactical play against the Swatch Group! Jean-Fred Dufour is a brilliant strategist! He really understands his business. Since Rolex cant use the expression Master Chronometer on its dial they let Tudor do it and therewith "attack" Omega ... But this alone is of corse not enough ... this does not define a luxury watch ... it guarantees a superior quality ... Rolex was and is ahead in terms of brand recognition, that's right ... but now the business is artificially hyped by some greedy ADs together with their flippers and resellers... Thats a very lucrative business! Everybody participating though from the buyers side is an idiot IMHO!

Hi Alexander, thank you for the true comparison. How did the black watches behave in the sun? Black absorbs sunlight and coverts it into heat- simplified described. A jump into cool water may stress the material and tightness. Are there any experience with ceramic diving watches?

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  3 роки тому +1

Watchmanufacturers do extensive testing before releasing a new watch… the behavior in the sun is known and heat/cold tests are done… Used under normal conditions a ceramic watch will not cause any problems … above and under the water… but it is ceramic and if it drops from a certain height and lands in a certain angle it may break…

@@WatchAdvisor Hi Alex why not bring out the Ducati from Swatch Group (RADO) The Master's of Materials ⌚
I understand the heritage from Longines but the designs are too classical not sporty enough.
The Rado CC CERAMIC is a bold move from Rado 👍 was think when this will happen and I am impressed with the decision to have a semi see through dial 😍
Better then I imagine it would be🥰❤️
I applaud Tudor's move on releasing the BB in all material choices 😉and upping their standards 👍, not just swapping movements with Breitling 🤣
I respect the shield 🛡 protecting the crown 👑 in many ways, segment, pricing, quantity, etc.
Interesting times for the watch industry. Tudor is honouring Rolex's mission as a tool watch for the people. I respect that more when Tudor are trying to up their game.
But the quality of Tudor watches, really needs to be in check. As I've seen and experienced too many issues with Tudor movements, I'm a little upset with my experience and journey. 😢
All that time, money, efforts and connections to get the watch and I can't enjoy my prized possession 🥺😢😭
These experiences really do affect my choices to select Tudor for my next goal watch. It's tempting, but hard to pull the trigger 😢
Not to mentioned the procedures and steps and hassles to get it serviced and to have it receive back in a no so kind way 🙄
For servicing I've always experienced happy and positive attitudes from Swatch Group of companies. They never ceases to amaze me on the level of finishing and care and service of their services. It's the company you can rely on always and every time. 😎👍
That's why I really do agree that Omega is a way superior quality product compared to Tudor.
Now, that being said, Omega has to up its game too to impress us more. Since there's more players in the game 😊😉😁
Side by side with the Crown, yes but overall I feel for the quality, it's still a little higher compared to the branded old crown.
It's sad to see that the People don't realize what they are missing out, on the real good stuff when they are all drawn to the King 😂🤣🤣
Pss 🤫(THE REAL KINGS = PP, JL, AL, GP, VC) too next level for the ordinary 🤣 too unfortunate 😜 maybe one day 😊💯 AL 😉👍
      Humm... Maybe JaquetD 🤩😍

What are your thoughts for example about the BB58 bronze or silver and their comparable Omega counterparts? Also, agree that the finish on Omega is better, but the price disparity reflects this don't you think? Thanks, great video! However, coming back to the Tudor vs. Longines comparison. I mean is it truly comparable? Agree price-value is massive on both ends. But still, the MT5602 caliber is an in-house movement with METAS certification. I'm not a Longines expert at all, so what can you tell me about their calibers? In my opinion they don't come anything near in terms of quality and certification. Plus: I want to have it all in-house manufactured in one go. If I start to go for patchwork watches, I can go for a BM Riviera instead of a 5711... Thanks anyways and also for any comments that might pop up!

First of all congratulations to your Tudor! You bought a VERY, VERY good watch that on top is Master Chronometer certified. Why did I say/write that Tudor compares to Longines and not Omega? These are facts! Just because Tudor is able to certify one single watch as a Master Chronometer does not mean it has achieved the all over luxury quality level of Omega. The compared Omega ceramic Seamster definitely plays in another league ... Tudor in terms of all over quality compares to Longines. But Longines has not yet launched its Master Chronometer certified watch(es). If you correctly listened to what I said in the video, then you know that I encouraged Longines to do the next step since Tudor now is challenging the brand. Besides the fact that Tudor now has a little advantage the all over quality of Longines and Tudor is still at the same level. If you are not aware of this, please go and check some Longines out. The calibres delivered from ETA to Longines are in-house tailor made. Longines reserves its own calibres at ETA and pays for them, as all the other Swatch Group brands do as well. ETA is the groups movement manufacturer and sells exclusive, brand specific in-house calibres to the brands of the group. Many are not aware of this, but the structure of Swatch Group has changed... ETA is no longer ETA as we knew it ... Now we will have to wait if Longines will give an answer to Tudor. Omega still compares to Rolex and Rolex to Omega ... nothing changed here...

There is one thing people over look 👀 with Tudor. They add a sense of nostalgia & warmth of vintage to their watches. The use of silver & bronze to celebrate the aging of a watch.
With the BB ceramic they added stainless to certain parts to allow that aging and patina to come in. To keep it 100% ceramic would make it cold 🥶

I feel Swatch Group needs people like yourself and Jean Claude Biver to respond properly to the punch of Rolex Group (with this Tudor's Master Certification). Frankly, I do not think a wake up from Longines would be sufficient answer. Omega should look for their own creative ways to start preventing customers from sticking to a Rolex's hype. In other words, Swatch Group should get not only a timely defense but strong offense.

But when my AD phoned me up for the Tudor knowing I collect Tudor watches (I own GMT, P01, bb58 navy and few vintage pieces like a prince) as well I couldn't resist. I prefer the bigger case and it was a no brainer for me and also mentas approved, ceramic bezel for that price is incredible. Tudor have been experimenting with different metals and materials in the last few releases in their black bay range. As I said it is more of an easier wear in my daily life hence why I wear it more often. I do agree with you that the omegas are more refined but I think both pieces have their own niche. I wouldnt say the levels of these 2 pieces are that far apart. I wouldnt say the omega is twice better quality than the tudor (omega price is more than twice the price of the tudor). The price is what it is and if you like it enough then you pay it if you have the money for it. I am not a Tudor fan boy, I have been collecting watches for over 20 years from non luxury to high end and independents. From Japanese, swiss, german and English brands. From modern to vinatge. This is something I don't know! Rolex does not communicate what additional tests are done with the entire watch after the movement comes back from its 14 days of testing by COSC... @@WatchAdvisor told you! You know your stuff very well. I like Rolex and Omega but prefer the second one all the way ! 🙏🏻I found the following:" Rolex also adds its own stricter requirements to those of the COSC for every mechanical watch it produces. Its “Superlative Chronometer” label requires an average daily rate between -2 and + 2 seconds per day when cased, tested in seven static positions and on a rotating rack simulating real life wear, performed over a period of 24 hours. Water resistance is checked with all standard models being taken to their rated depth plus 10% in water bath and divers models tested to plus 25% of their rated depth. Rolex even has a special high-performance tank that can simulate the pressure at 4,875 metres (16,000 feet) below sea level (that’s the 3,900 metres water resistance for the Deepsea model plus 25%).The self-winding function and power reserve are also monitored as part of the testing requirements. Rolex make no specific mention of any magnetism requirements that their movements undergo, and the testing process is somewhat of a secret, but they have been producing their Milgauss watch, which is resistant to 1,000 gauss, since 1956, so we can be sure that their standards are strict."

An interesting video Alexander. I tend to agree with most of the views you shared maybe with a couple of comments. Both watches are fine devices and deserve credit for METAS certification. As for comparing the two they are different markets as you state.
Advance apology as this goes on a bit.
I sort of agree it would be great to see Longines released from the 'prison' to do more of it's own thing as far as certification goes and that is something that I would like to see as well. As for not bothering to look 'left or right' following the hopeful certification does disturb me. I would love to see a swarm of brands getting METAS certified for their individual models but I would also like to see existing brands continue who may not be able to afford this certification. COSC costs on it's own and it sounds like this is a prerequisite for METAS. Many brands models don't even bother with COSC anymore but specify a tolerance that is similar for the movements , ORIS caliber 400 for instance. As long as manufacturers stand by those specifications in real life then I'm fine with it. It would be very upsetting to see more Swiss brands go under purely because they cannot afford the extra expense to certify every single watch that would add cost to the watches that they sell and that we purchase. This is a very competitive level of the market here, Finally this certification if I understand it correctly would not apply to anything outside Swiss production.
In summary, once certified you would (need) be able to command a premium uplift in price of a watch to cover the extra costs associated with that certification but if you are a smaller independent make the specs clear and stand by them. I want to see more manufacturers not less as it drives competition possibly giving us the purchaser better choice and value for money. Apologies for the long comment

Anthony, thanks for sharing, a very interesting g read... I would not trust Oris (or any other company) ... they can claim whatever they want without delivering any proof that it is treu ... especially when a small company builds its own calibre I want a proof that it is accurate and reliable... I also don't like the Patek Philippe, the Jaeger-LeCoultre and Montblanc in-house testing ... Rolex at least puts its movements to COSC and then adds some internal testing on top... A test like METAS reflects todays reality especially concerning the everywhere to find magnetism ... maybe not 15.000 gauss of course, but need to raise the bar to always be on the safe side. I expect that the Oris calibre is tested to the usual 60 gauss of the Swiss watch industry ... if this is the case, it is total ridiculous ... this calibre will quickly have accuracy rate problems and after a while stopp if exposed to normal life appearing magnetism ... I don't wish anyone to disappear from the market, but I don't like companies selling technical standards from the 1970s in the year 2021 ...

The Oris information states the calibre 400 was tested at 2,250 gauss, well below 15,000 that METAS does but much higher than the usual 60. Deviation 10 seconds. ISO 764 standard is within 30 seconds a day after exposure to 200 gauss.
I also don't like companies selling on tech for standards that are well out of date for today's environment.
METAS and COSC certification will certainly get my focus form a movement accuracy perspective but there are some fine watches that are not.
I do hope Longines go the METAS route though, plenty of data should be available from the Swatch groups sibling brand Omega who would still have exclusive use of the excellent George Daniels co=axial escapement.

Well the point is made, and one couldn’t really disagree - “Tudor is not Omega”.
But isn’t the name of the competition game is at part to take your opponents market?
What’s Oris doing with their diver 65 and aquis for example?
Or Rolex yachtmaster 42 for example, try making a video on the topic that yachtmaster 42 isn’t an aquanaut…
Tudor is taking advantage on their market position, and has the numbers to prove it.
Omega needs to start doing some thinking because the had some very good models (I think the SMP and PO are the best offers in their respective segment), and some not too good decisions (MOTM is priced unrealistically in my humble opinion, but time will tell).

They are I think repositioning to compete with Tudor more with the Spirit range, especially the new Zulu Time and the new Ultra Chron, particularly applicable in this case.
Mind you as I have told you I have experienced some quality issues with Longines, having purchased my first one only some weeks back and already it has had to go back to Longines due to a clear fault (I have requested a replacement piece) yet upon chasing the status of the repair/replacement only today, Longines have informed me today that they cannot locate the watch in their system so cannot update me. I Have both, you can say the tudor gives more value for ceramic and metas certified dive watch. However overall when put side by side you can clearly see the higher form of finishing on the omega. Finishing on the side of the case, case back, the bezel and insert on the omega is way better than the tudor piece. Tudor still uses PVD coated steel bezel and caseback & crown. While omega uses all ceramic except for the movement, hands, indices, strap and pin.

Reading the comments and you know how powerful branding and marketing is and that also is one of the reasons why people wear mechanical watches these days.
For me Omega movements are the best statistically in their price range (METAS certification is very good), and in terms of build I think they are on par with Rolex, but obviously values of watches, which in modern era is just a luxury product, does not really depend purely on how good a watch is.
Regarding Tudor in-house movement vs Longines ETA modified movements, I think functionally (at least on paper) they are really close, the newest Longines movements are also COSC certified with silicon balance spring, but in-house has people thinking a sense of prestige and the comparison has ended before it has started.
Also when comparing brands sometimes it depends on perspective, Tudor makes good dive watches (better than Longines imo) but Longines does better on a lot more different style imo (dress watches, female watches etc).
At the end of the day, the sought-after-ness is one of the most important determining factor of a luxury product or a luxury brand, it is hard to compare brands purely from a technical standpoint because many people don't care about that, there is no right or wrong but when the perspective is different then there is no consensus.

These people are not buying watches, but shares, aka hyped luxury items ... they confuse emotions & passion for mechanical wristwatches with the stock exchange ... If they are stupid enough to participate in that by greedy ADs created, total artificial game of buying other watches to get on a waiting list and then still paying overprices ... we should let them do what they have to do ... I have no compassion!

Rolex has the best marketing. That logo is worth 10x

Rolex has unfortunately degenerated into a disdainful speculative object. The majority of today's Rolex buyers have ZERO idea about a high-quality timepiece, are not buying one of the best Swiss wristwatches, but an investment, which is - pardon the comparison - like throwing pearls before swine. Real watch lovers, however, go away empty-handed...

Why wouldn't you compare 2 black ceramic watches if that's what you were looking for? The Omega is less than double the price of the Tudor. That's not that much in watch terms. It wouldn't be crazy for someone to seriously consider both and pick one or the other

@@WatchAdvisor yeah dude I watched you say you can't compare them about 35k times as if you were looking at an AP and a Swatch

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  4 місяці тому +1

Then I’ll say (write) it 35k + 1 time … the Omega plays in another league, can’t be compared with a Tudor… one is a full ceramic watch the other a partly ceramic one and so on…

How about instead of Longines can be Hamilton? Prestigious Brand with history and creativity.

    • @WatchAdvisor

Hamilton is clearly positioned under Longines in the Swatch Group ... A very cool brand, you are right, but not strong enough to compete against Tudor ...

Hamilton can't compete, I have both hamilton and longines and longines is 2 levels above.
