Interestingly, Google's Driverless Cars aren't exciting to ride in at all. They accelerate slowly, drive exactly the speed limit, give way when they're supposed to, don't speed through yellow lights, give bikes and pedestrians ample right of way and space... Most humans, on the other hand, do ALL the *wrong* things in these situations! Humans ARE the problem with driving. Future cars are going to be a lot less exciting, but will save hundreds of thousands of lives.
This can be avoided by just giving more room in front of the person in front of you, and actually looking ahead of you and not just at the car in front. I see people speeding into the gaps I leave when I see a stationary bit of traffic, only for them to slam their brakes on when they catch up to the traffic, and I end up behind them again anyway so its completely pointless. It helps being lazy and not wanting to change gears and save fuel as I drive manual, so I change as little as possible, so when I see traffic stopping ahead I just let off the accelerator and coast, by the time I meet the stopped traffic it starts moving again, and I haven't stopped/changed gears/slowed down at all, or caused traffic behind me to slow down.
Definitely agree! Don't know why everyone doesn't think like this. I just go slow in jams, get good economy and not brake much and still end up behind the same car
Oliver Matthew the reason why people don't think the same way as ratgreen is because they don't drive manual. An automatic drive doesn't deal with changing the gears in traffic which creates the stop and go effect. A manual driver has to change the gears, obviously, but will eventually get tired of shifting gears from neutral to first to second and back down again. Hopefully that makes sense a automatic and standard driver have a complete different mindset when it comes to driving and traffic.

uh, the "ants are perfect drivers" might have something to do with the fact that they can climb over each other and don't have to worry about fender-benders
***** Ants are around for 130 millions years. That's WAYYYYY longer than humans. Will humans be able to be around for that long or will war put an end to humans?
***** There's the problem that ants if they have a fender-bender won't actually get damaged and won't have to go to the doctors. Meanwhile if you have a collision with your car you will have court cases, repair bills, check-ups at the doctor etc. Kind of a problem when we drive around in 1,5 ton tin cans at 30+ kph, while the most we can do on average is about 20 kph on our 70ish kilo bodies.
Let's not forget, though, that when two ants accidentally bump into each other, they don't risk dying in a fiery crash, or suffering thousands of dollars worth of damage.
I've been wondering about this myself, and am glad that I finally have the answer for it! Thanks, DNews :) ! This must be one of the best videos you've made.
One of the biggest issues I come across, where I live, are elderly people driving; not that they are carrying heavy loads, but are simply driving below the speed limit. This also appears to be for 'no reason' other than they are elderly and afraid to drive at a reasonable speed. If someone should feel it prudent to drive 25 mph in a posted 40 mph area, they typically turn on their flashers to signal to others they are moving slowly, but many elderly people simply congest the roads, driving slowly and causing traffic issues. This can be very frustrating.
Something else to consider, most people slow down when they see a red light up ahead. You would think that's the logical thing to do, right? Why speed up to a red light? But if you think about it you are slowing down which makes everybody behind you slow down causing a chain reaction. A car ten cars back probably won't make a light that is behind you because you slowed down. Understand what I'm saying? I'm not necessarily encouraging making a sudden stop at a red light but people will go super slow sometimes not considering the chain reaction they are causing.
I think you got that ego thing right... like the person texting at a red light not paying attention or just trying to text and drive and are either driving slow or inconsistently. They pay no regard to how they are endangering others or how they are holding people up, self absorbed. Distracted drivers are a major source of road problems. and as we grow older we slow down. So "gramps" gets in "hot rods" way lol I am a delivery driver and it's a constant endeavor to stay out of peoples way and to get to your destination quickly. It's not easy.
Not to mension that ants going so slow all the time that they have almost no stopping distances. If they max out at for example 10 cm per second or 0,36 km/h (wich is probably still an overestimate) and slows down with the same rate as a car at full braking (wich is a very low deceleration in terms of force at their scale) - they will stop within a distance of just 0.6 mm!! That's not even 1/5 of their body length (compare that to a car stopping at 1/5 of it's own length). That also means they can adjust the speed up or down in an instant or even stop for a split second to adjust distance to the one in front. It's not at all like a car that needs a lot of distance and time to adjust it's speed in comparison. Although the reaction times is still quite intresting as they would still go over 10 times their own length in just a second. Their perception of time is probably a lot faster than ours as everything happens so fast at their small scale. That's also why it looks to us as they are moving at constant speed as we mostly see the average, but if the speed of a single ant where measured like 1000 times a second it would probably be very unsmooth.
There was this site where you could put more cars and semi-trucks in a circle road and you could see why there was this part that slowed down like a wave in a lane
A good way to avoid constantly stopping in traffic is to keep a 2-3 car following distance from the car in front of you. That way you can keep a constant speed even if they slow down or occasionally stop.
Okay, but ants don't have lanes, traffic laws, speed limits, traffic accidents, road side construction or police pulling people over. Not a very good comparison imo.

People don't realize what they're doing when they drive slowly in the leftmost lane, or when two slow drivers are going at the same pace right next to each other, so no one can pass. Blissfully unaware of how many people are behind them
I'm a pretty courteous driver. As someone who has a long commute every workday I understand what other drivers are going through. But another reason why there is traffic is just poor judgement of other drivers. For instance, I can't tell you how many times up ahead someone has stopped completely not because there's a light or a pedestrian, but because someone coming from the opposite direction wants to make a left turn. There's no back up in that direction. The person in our direction is just being overly courteous for no good reason.
Traffic jams happen because you have a huge volume of cars that are forced onto relatively few highways, because most streets are not designed for thru traffic. Therefore traffic slows down as more and more cars merge into available lanes. Traffic jams are the price you pay to have your quiet little neighborhood. I'm from a small city in Mexico where pretty much every street runs from one end of the city to the other, shaped like a grid. Never seen a traffic jam there in 20 years.
One more example of how we keep losing at the prisoner's dilemma game. Hopefully if we all get driveless cars they can be all connected to solve this issue.
Every time I'm in a long queue of traffic stopped behind traffic lights, I think of this: Why can all the vehicles in the queue not start again at the exact same time? We wouldn't have to wait a few seconds after the car in front starts moving before we do, as long as we *know* that every car in the queue will move at the exact same time and speed. With a little expert synchronisation, the queue could act like carriages on a train, all moving together, and not like dominos, each one waiting for their turn to move.
***** I think of this all the time too, but most find driving a chore and are barely paying attention. Self driving cars can be synchronized. I work for Daimler and our new autonomous trucks have a "caravaning" function.

What I want to know is, is driving exhausting for everyone, or just the driver? I feel like on long road trips passengers don't get nearly as tired as the person who's concentrating on the road.
Boredom can get you very tired. Shotgun is probably the seat that is the least exhausting since the seat is basically the command center for a road trip. They are the one who gets to do stuff for the driver and play DJ for the trip while the people driving in the back basically don't need to do anything for the driver and only need to entertain themselves, which gets very boring after a while. All Drivers need to do is focus, which is a tiring job on its own.
Or it could he that some people just don't know how to drive with purpose. Driving with purpose is knowing where you are going and getting there, not mucking around while you are driving. There are no reason for traffic jams. I've been on straight stretches of motor way with no on or off rams for miles and for some reason people just decide to drive slow. WHY?... There is no need to. It also annoys me when people over take you and then slow down or when people move into the fast lane or the over taking lane and they don't even speed up to pass or over take the car that's ahead of them, thereby stopping you from moving ahead.
It goes the same way with humans walking. Even if it's crowded as hell, we still find ways to keep walking without getting stuck or the need of a traffic light. I personally will slowdown when i see a person carrying bulky items. we and ants have the same behaviours when it comes to walking.
Even if an ant did not slow down they could just walk over the other ants and not cause damage whereas cars just hit other cars because they can't just go over. So why would ants ever need to slow down in that situation? I think the top two reasons for traffic are people switching to the "fastest" moving lane all the time thinking they are going to get further faster. Just like the episode where you talked about in stores where one checkout lane moves faster, it will always feel that way to us so switching lanes in turn slows down other people. The main problem is people don't obey road signs. Here is a sign that says 5 miles ahead these two lanes go to one, merge left now. I merge right then or shortly after so to not cause issues with other drivers. The reason the left lane CONTINUOUSLY stops is people speeding ahead in the right lane until the very last second they have to merge forcing people to throw on their breaks creating that stop wave you talked about in this video. If people would just follow road signs and not drive like you said, "for themselves" there would not be as much traffic. I am sorry if you speed ahead when it says to merge and the merge zone is pretty close, I wont let you merge because you are a jerk. This also reminds me of people passing me wanting to go faster and I catch up with them shortly after or they turn into the same spot im going gain one magical car length on me. What about people that pull forward trying to go against the flow of a train at the train tracks... I love it when people are trying to make the train go faster, leave the line because they are inpatient and then the train ends as they turn to head to the back of the train...lol *rant over*
I noticed that in Europe, there is much less traffic on the highways than in America. Maybe it's because of the safety distance they have in Europe (if u look closely u can notice that the cars are much closer together in American highways) and the way u overtake in Europe. In Europe, the inside lanes are the least dense ones on the road (on highways). This makes overtaking easier if someone brakes for no reason. In the clip, u can see that there are approximately equal numbers of cars on each lanes. Another thing that might help lessen the traffic (I'm sorry to say) is having tolls. Maybe time to get European!!
I don't think ants are a good example of this. Aside from the fact ants have a shared interest (the colony), there are 3 things that separate cars+people from ants in a way that doesn't easily compare them: 1. Cars are restricted to specific roads. Ants invent their own roads as they walk. The colony will still try to follow it, but they don't need to stay in an exact formation. 2. Cars are massive heavy objects with a lot of momentum. It is usually in everyone's best interest to not crash. Ants, meanwhile, can walk on top of each other and will be fine. 3. Cars take a while to accelerate to highway speeds. Ants meanwhile, can accelerate from a top to full walk speed in less than 1 second. In their perspective, it might be a little slow, but proportionately, ants still accelerate quicker than cars. A lot of the problem with traffic jams is people not picking up the pace quickly enough when they have the opportunity.
no need for driver-less cars.If 10% of car drivers would switch to bikes/motorcycles over 40% of the traffic would be reduced (reference to an Australian government study)
I can't wait for driverless cars. A big part of the problem is everyone driving at different speeds. When all the vehicles in the road are traveling at the same speed we will all get where we're going more efficiently. Most speed limits are so low because there's so many bad drivers. If all cars become driverless I could imagine speed limits of 90 MPH on the interstate becoming the norm.
I don't know why but where I come from people don't change lanes and pass. Instead they just get closer and closer until they just a few inches from contact. Then they flash their lights and horn. If that doesn't work then they will pass at full throttle cutting off the other driver. I guess people where I come from expect everyone to get out of their way. If they don't they must know how angry they are that they didn't get out of the way. Making a Lane change is so inconvenient that it is considered as cruel and unusual punishment by willfully forcing them to make a Lane change
Next time you see an 18 wheeler with your local super market logo on it let it run in front of you cause it carries the food for your colony and everyone will get faster to their destination not matter how slow the truck goes.
It’s because everyone sucks at driving. For example you have a perfectly safe 40 yard gap between you and he car in front of you, yet you decide to speed up and follow the car in front 5 yards instead... this is what slows us down and also gets people killed. I hate drivers here in the US
I just love the idiots who cut in-and-out of lanes to get maybe 2 miles ahead then end up in the same place. My boss hates it when I leave lots of room and people cut in. I say they'll eventually move out of my lane and so on…
Just clicked to see what DNews was going to say. The solution is pretty easy. If every driver respects a decent safety distance the jam practicaly won't make cars to stop.
Because fucking ants have fucking common goal, because if ants collide it doesn't result in potential fatal injuries and thousands of dollars in damages. Also, ever heard/seen the thing called 'ant death circle/death spiral/ant mill'.
Yeah but when an ant rear ends the ant in front of it it doesn't kill a family of six.
mamushi72sai5575 That's why there are speed limits and stopping distance requirements.
exactly It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
mamushi72sai5575 And ants aren't cars, so bumping into each other doesn't require them to stop or pull over.
It's usually the family of six that causes the traffic jam in the first place....

Lack of mass transit is one of the biggest culprits.
Someone needs to invent flying cars
They already exist. It's called planes
NexuzZ SP33DY lol
***** then we will have jams not only in several horizontal lanes, but a few vertical ones too.
We already have them, they cost as much as luxury cars. They're just not widely available.
***** flying cars would be impractical - can you imagine the home and building insurance claims from crashes? I like the roof ON my house thanks. Flying while intoxicated? Flying while on a cellular phone? There will even be a brand new form of Road Rage =^_^=
a week ago i missed a final exam going to college because is got stuck in traffic for two hours when it should have took me 20 minutes. you can imagine how frustrated i was when they didn't except my excuse for being late.

Not here in Alberta,LOL… bumper to bumper at 120km/hr…all it takes is one car to start a big pileup accident
Why does DNews not hire any black hosts?
Tara Long, Anthony Carboni, Laci Green, Natalia Reagan, Sally Le Page, Crystal Dilworth, Dr. Kiki Sanford, Annie Gaus, Julia Wilde, Catie Wayne, Ian O’Neill, Julian Huguet, Joe Bereta, Amy Shira Teitel, Cristen Conger, Veronica Belmont, Jim Louderback, Steve Zaragoza, Matt Lieberman, Kosta Grammatis, Trace Dominguez, Chastity Vicencio, Carin Bondar, Rob Nelson
25 hosts, zero black. Coincidence?
I don't understand how slowing down behind a slower person would make everyone get somewhere faster
Ants don't have to worry about killing another ant when they bump into one another and they will often times walk over each other.
"Get cathartic down in the comments."
Worst. Suggestion. Ever.
Every driverless car comes with its very own Chappie!
Traffic is why I'm late for school every single day. 😡😡😡😡
It goes the same way with humans walking. Even if it's crowded as hell, we still find ways to keep walking without getting stuck or the need of a traffic light. I personally will slowdown when i see a person carrying bulky items. we and ants have the same behaviours when it comes to walking.
I hate traffic so much. I already have so little free time and a lot of it is being consumed by shitty traffic!
Ants don't die if they collide with each other.
I use public transport with separate lanes for bus only, metro and a bicycle to get every where. :D
Okay, the conclusion is, Ant are SMARTER THAN HUMAN in a traffic matters.
I think rather than putting a maximum speed limit, putting a minimum speed limit will make the traffic flows better
I love it when people are trying to make the train go faster, leave the line because they are inpatient and then the train ends as they turn to head to the back of the train...lol
*rant over*
"Why Does Traffic Stop For No Reason?"
Traffic doesn't stop "for no reason."
I have a fear of being stuck and being stuck in traffic is apart of that it's horrible I avoid rush hour
2018 and im watching this video while im in traffic
I'm a "tuck'r in'r"! I don't have to work as hard driving, and I figure I'm losing VERY LITTLE time compared to the average, frenzied drivers.
I would not mind driving in traffic if it weren't for all the other people on the road
I don't think ants are a good example of this. Aside from the fact ants have a shared interest (the colony), there are 3 things that separate cars+people from ants in a way that doesn't easily compare them:
A lot of the problem with traffic jams is people not picking up the pace quickly enough when they have the opportunity.
everyone needs to see this
no need for driver-less cars.If 10% of car drivers would switch to bikes/motorcycles over 40% of the traffic would be reduced (reference to an Australian government study)
If ants run into each other, no big deal. "Tucking" your vehicle behind another car called tailgating, and has it's own risks involved, unlike ants.
Ants don't die if they hit one another unlike cars to large trucks.
By the way...I don't drive a car...I drive a bike...and YES! I have to slow down because cars downtown are so slow.
its the idiots who drive slow forcing others to overtake
Automated cars which can communicate with centralised traffic system and with nearby cars can reduce traffic by a lot.
Next time you see an 18 wheeler with your local super market logo on it let it run in front of you cause it carries the food for your colony and everyone will get faster to their destination not matter how slow the truck goes.
Is the lighting extremely red or are you just very sunburnt?
I feel like Ludicrous. "Move B****, get out the way!"
How can you "do" something for twenty+ years and still not have a "good" judgment about it? I drive alot
Ever notice how most modern problems are caused by to many people in a small space?
It’s because everyone sucks at driving. For example you have a perfectly safe 40 yard gap between you and he car in front of you, yet you decide to speed up and follow the car in front 5 yards instead... this is what slows us down and also gets people killed. I hate drivers here in the US
Someone forgot that there are traffic light and traffic junction!
I just love the idiots who cut in-and-out of lanes to get maybe 2 miles ahead then end up in the same place. My boss hates it when I leave lots of room and people cut in. I say they'll eventually move out of my lane and so on…
The Toyota got me!
Just clicked to see what DNews was going to say. The solution is pretty easy. If every driver respects a decent safety distance the jam practicaly won't make cars to stop.
thanks toyota for all that knowledge.
so does this mean that self driving cars will get rid of traffic jams?
saw Sam Basher on the thumbnail and thought it was a sourcefed video lol
Because fucking ants have fucking common goal, because if ants collide it doesn't result in potential fatal injuries and thousands of dollars in damages. Also, ever heard/seen the thing called 'ant death circle/death spiral/ant mill'.
