I think it's worth mentioning that a lot of the end-game dungeons reuse assets from a lot of the previous ones - blatant enough to be easily noticed. Didn't take me out of the game too much though, I find the gameplay to be very smooth. Do check out the video in the description if you want a proper plot recap of the game!
I never found PSMD to be underwhelming. I just think that Explorers raised the bar really high. I still loved the plot of this game and the references to the first three PMD games scattered throughout 💚
Explorers definitely could be said to have set a high bar in for an epic adventure. There also is probably a level of nostalgia that plays into it. Gates suffered from following it up (heck, Time and Darkness even get less recognition primarily because of the special episodes in Sky, despite having the same story), but it and Super are both good games in their own rights (Honestly I think one of the bigger downsides to Gates was the inability to do multiple missions per dungeon run). I mean, I think there are things they do even better than Explorers in both story and gameplay. All the PMD games have been great, emotional, and fun, to me.
28:42 if you look at the ancient treasure looplets they all refrence past PMD games, which is neat Wildfire, Tempest and Radiant - Wildfire Adventure Squad, Tempest Adventure Squad and Radiant Adventure Squad Red And Blue - Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team Time, Darkness and Sky - Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness and Explorers of Sky
conclusion: ALWAYS watch if there is starter somewhere in the map if you don't want to get blocked. also, finishing destiny tower isn't the last thing to do, there is two dungeons left, the I don't remember the name and nobody mind because that's just the next one but easier a relatively long name, and the sacred ruins, the only way to finish it being by fleeing with speed boost attack like with cloyster.
I remember sacred ruins being absolute hell to get through. I tried with many different legendaries like the legendary birds and I'm pretty sure I ended up beating it using rotom but I don't remember. Sacred ruins is the true final boss. Destiny tower is like weeny hut Jr's in comparison
It's REALLY weird because I remember beating the main story, but I don't remember any of the story beats except knowing nuzleaf's arc. Like I don't remember ANYTHING else. The connections thing, like the characters I just kind of forgot it?
Final feels like: We've Been Tricked, We've Been Backstabbed and We've Been, Quite Possibly, Bamboozled. Despite that little dissapointment it was a very great video
The thing about PMD is that it has the ability to make you fond of Pokémon you wouldn't ever care about otherwise. It does this while the main games don't. Here, every Pokémon you meet has its own personality and are actively involved in the story. They feel like they belong in the world. In the main games they're just weapons you randomly find and use essentially.
A year late, but still a major negative if a game takes a while just so that you can eventually feel like you're enjoying it. That's something I have an issue with. It feels like a major excuse for a poor beginning. If a game takes a while to enjoy, then it's not truly a good game. It's like saying you need to dig through dirt just to find a handful of candy that was exposed to dirt. Even the original dungeon games were never that tedious with their beginnings.
Post game was extremely difficult for me, mainly because I played as a Fennekin. Doing a ground, dark, and water dungeon back to back alone is difficult, and you can't even do other missions to grind for it. Frustrating, but once you finally come prepared and luck out it's relieving.
The only thing I didn’t really like about this game was that Dark Matter seemed like a rehash of the Bitter Cold from Gates. I probably have an unpopular opinion here but I think the Bitter Cold entity was handled better than Dark Matter.
I haven't played Gates yet and barely know anything about Bitter Cold, but I've seen some people make videos on their differences and how they serve different stories...maybe you'll find that one day somehow. Again, havent played to understand if it's different enough. (Also I'm glad that's the only thing you didn't like. I really enjoyed SMD after only playing Explorers.)
Nah Dark Matter was much better. It was much more threatening than the Bittercold was. And it made much more sense that the only way to truly defeat it was for a Pokémon to accept the dark side of themselves. With the Bittercold they didn't have to accept anything. They just found a loophole about how it couldn't affect humans and made the human destroy it for them, instead of accepting what they had created. I feel like the heroes of Gates failed to properly defeat the Bittercold just like how Mew originally failed to destroy Dark Matter in the distant past. It's only a matter of time before another Bittercold emerge.
As someone who recently played and finished both Super and Gates within days of each other I can tell you inmediately that Bittercold was a lot more underwelming as a threat than Dark Matter, not to mention Dark Matter actually did stuff in the story like having it's lackeys turn every legendary to stone instead of just sitting in the one glacier and not even moving until the end game, Dark Matter was more of a continuous threat throughout the game, and having a more interesting final boss fight to booth.
@@wintersong2266 I know I'm like 1 year later, but... The main thing for stopping the Bittercold wasn't the loophole, that'd be like saying the reason they had an opportunity against Dark Matter was because of the Harmony Scarves. The MC wasn't able to really damage the Bittercold until people started having hope again. I actually think for this same reason the Bittercold was better handled; they destroyed this iteration of it, but it will appear again if they continue to be so negative on the world. They KNOW it will happen again so the best they can do is to treat each other better and keep hoping for a better future. On the other hand, the partner accepting Dark Matter kinda felt like "we defeated negativity forever!!11!1" which is okay for a fictional story but falls flat compared to the more realistic morale of GtI. Anyways PMD is great. And I love GtI 🙂
This theory will be a spoiler so read ahead if you’re fine with spoilers Bit of a late response, but I have theory that all the mystery dungeon games are actually connected in a way that does happen to be full of plot holes. First, my theory starts with the idea that the human should never come back to the pokemon world and that this messes with the timeline. My evidence to this is when you go to bring back yourself in gates to infinity. If you refuse to come back, the world is basically destroyed and you have to do the dungeon all over. And even in coming back, I think this is the type of thing that they describe in super mystery dungeon, describing the reason dark matter came back (which I think is just the alternate universe version of the bitte r cold) as mews fault. I think mew or your partner always shows up as your starter partner, due to the events of the explorers games. While you do prevent the collapse of time, temporal tower is still broken down. Could this cause side effects in the timeline? You could use this as a starting point, saying that the distortion of time by both the incident at the temporal tower and always bringing your partner back shows a degree of selfishness by your partner, who throughout every game is mew (until super mystery dungeon he accepts that he must be the hero and go away himself.) the difference being that you belong in super mystery dungeon, and that mew (your partner’s acceptance of past mistakes with you), leads to the destruction of the dark matter, which I think is personified in different forms depending on the game, all leading back to the distortion of time in explorers. Now I am not good at explaining my whole argument, so my point might not make sense but feel free to ask questions.
I wouldn’t bother with anything you consider to be lack luster. Don’t waste your effort on something you are passionate about, it will only needlessly add to your burn out - plus, the best videos come from passion. You do a lot of amazing work, I’m sure no matter what you decide it will be amazing. Cheers!
I just noticed the ancient treasures is red/blue rescue team, explorers of time darkness and sky, and Japan only mystery dungeon games radiance tempest and wildfire that's cool as heck
PSMD’s plot goes absolutely hard in its final act it really makes me wonder where else can you really go from there. The entire planet nearly got oblitarated by the sun. How do you top that?
By taking the plot in a different direction than world destroying calamities. I think a warring factions plot could be an interesting direction to go, since Super Mystery Dungeon introduced 4 continents it could be a worldwide conflict between them. Perhaps instead of the pokemon you encounter in dungeons could be pokemon of an enemy faction. idk I'm kind of just "spitballing" ideas, but I think taking the plot in a direction other than world destroying calamity caused by legendary pokemon or world destroying calamity caused by the embodiment of negative emotions. I think a different kind of conflict that is more character or faction driven could be a refreshing direction to take the series in while keeping the core dungeon crawling gameplay intact.
The story in Gates To Infinity is alright. The biggest issue with Gates To Infinity is gameplay and the fact that you can't recruit legendaries which sucks because Kyurem is my favorite legendary. It's worth a 100 hours playthrough if you haven't played it before that way you can see for yourself. The biggest problem I have with Super Mystery Dungeon is that you don't really recruit Pokemon to your team. You just unlock them.
Can't recruit legendaries? You can get: Virizion, Keldeo, Cobalion, Terrakion, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, and Meloetta Yeah it sucks you can't get certain legendaries but you can still get legendaries.
Personally I actually really like Turtwig as a starter in this game, with Charmander as partner. They make a great combo, especially when fully evolved, and I relied on them with Cresselia for the really hard stuff.
when i was younger i never got too far in the game because i’d always reset it because i wanted to play as different pokémon. this year i buckled in and played through super mystery dungeon for old times sake, and it kinda hurt my heart when i learned that nuzleaf was evil because i went my whole childhood having some love for the pokémon because he was nice to me in super mystery dungeon
if meory serves, mewtwo can be cheesed really hard if you bring sableye shedinja and spiritomb, just make sure one of them has heal block because recover is a pain
I may be in the minority here, but I think Super is the best PMD game just for the story alone. The pacing is slow in the beginning, but that doesn’t matter to me.
I...forgot how insane the plot of this game was....gonna have to restart my file (that or do side-missions and hope im in that portion of the game)To re-experience it, wont get the *Gasp* From the plot-twists but ill get the some smiles
It also came right after explorers, which is a huge game to try to match, let alone do better. I feel they outdid themselves a bit too much on explorers, which while not bad at all, gave us players some unrealistic expectations for the next game
I think the problem with Gates is that it has an issue with tell but don't show. We're told early on that Pokémon are all becoming cold and cruel to each other. But really apart from a few con artists we encounter early on the situation really doesn't seem as bad as the game imply it is. Heck we had much more cruel Pokémon in Rescue Team and Explorers and no one complained about the cruelty of Pokémon in those games.
You.. dont get that the story over the course from PMD1 to PMD4/PSMD is connected right? This is why the meteor, the changed future/timeline and the world suffering extreme cold & hotness is all based on the actions from within those stories, including Darkrai's plan to corrupt the future in PMD2 iirc.
Weird I am also having an issue connecting with chikorita I’m not sure why the red connection mark won’t appear and I just found chikorita in the cafe, is this a bug?
Psmd is the best pmd game in terms of the gameplay loop imo, first and foremost because of the connection system and also because of the circles mechanic which is really creative and works well. This and the various qol improvements made me impatient and hyped for a new pmd after playing it, but alas it has been a long time since then...
19:55 the 2 most annoying thing about Mewtwo fight is, 1, we cant stack up gem, and 2, f*ck the recover plus boss decrease in bad effect, and only after this Im starting to use Metal Sound Klefki plus 2 sp.atk personally, the only thing that I dont like about this game is the connecting system, like it means no more evolution needed except our 2 main characters also, because the purpose of expedition is to get connect, im feeling like farming there is a lot harder
I've played through PSMD a fair bit, I really like clearing Path of Fallen Leaves ASAP to get the double-saturation looplet thing since it really helps in long dungeons.
I have played this game when I was around 8 I believe. This is the only pokemon game I ever played and I never beat it. Watching this video brings back some nostalgia!
I personally struggled my ___ off playing PSMD, i found some missions increadibly challenging and I LOVED the stroy, and our partner. It's not as polished or whatever as Sky, but luckily, we can have all the games at the same time instead of chosing, so, they all have their own perks!!! I don't think there was a single Mystery Dungeon that didn't make me cry.
My first MD game ever & still my preferred to play through. Although Explorers of Sky has a better story, SMD’s story is also great & the mechanics are superior in my opinion. I also have a personal theory that Dark matter was reincarnated as Xerneas, which when doing the postgame makes it feel better in a way, like we are helping a former villain be a good guy.
To this day, I don’t understand why the American translators named the game « Super » Mystery Dungeon. Unless they were completely unaware of Pokémon mechanics. The Japanese name has « Mega » in it, like in French and probably most other languages the games were translated into.
Why are there so many random black spots? (Pokemon Nexus shouldn't be that colour, sky in the Latias/Latios cutscene was black, dark spots on the prism guarding the spring)
Ngl, when I played through PSMD however many years ago it was now, I had found it pretty brutal at some points in the storyline. Not sure if that was just me setting myself up poorly or that I didn't do any requests (don't remember if that actually is the case)
I think it's because of the major focus on Emeras for dungeons, if you don't get the right ones you need for a difficult dungeon, you'll find yourself struggling a lot more often. I remember the first time I got to the last boss in the main story (Me: Riolu, Partner: Fennekin), I had barely gotten any good emera pickups throughout the entire dungeon and lost to the boss multiple times.

8 months late but I agree, I think they're missing out on a lot of opportunities on not using specific Pokémon as the big bad in the PMD games like they did with Time/Darkness/Sky. It started with a meteor, then a snowflake and finally some comically ominous looking orb
Something I thought about in the PMD games... imagine you just went through this whole journey and you finally get to go home and some random pokemon you've known for maybe a month forces you to come back and stay away from home for an indefinite amount of time. Basically kidnapping-
it is annoying you failed your challenges because of an over/undersight in development when going to dungeons you can press l to see how many floors a dungeon will have so since you completed destiny tower before getting the quest for it soft/hardlocked you from getting all connections
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I found Super Mystery Dungeon so utterly underwhelming compared to earlier titles. I also think that the more "modern", "3-dimensional" look hurts it rather than it helps. Story-wise, explorers of sky just set the bar insanely high as well, and the first PMD titles were really amazing in that regard.
Sorry you failed the challenge, Indutro. I think the fact that you can't 100% the game because of a bugged Chikorita means that I will avoid this game forever. *sigh* If not even hacking Chikorita into the game will fix the problem, this game is pointless to play. :( Super Mystery Dungeon is an EPIC PHAIL, which is sad because all of its predecessors were awesome. I think the whole Connections system was a bad idea and they should have stuck with recruiting Pokemon in dungeons like before. This is probably why the attempts to revive the series failed and we will never see any Pokemon Mystery Dungeon again, the Pokemon Company cut its losses because Super Mystery Dungeon bombed in sales due to this stupid bug. X(

I just finish the main story Yesterday for the first Time
Respond me why chikorita don't respawn
I should go back to this game, only got as far as I guess you'd call it post-game where your partner pokemon leaves.
I have this game but it crashes every time I boot it up which makes me *UNBELIEVABLY ANGRY*
Bro I am french and random just makes me encountering to your videos. Thanks to him !
Typical GOD...... Showing up at the last min. lmao
I just found my 3DS so I'll be replaying this game
Hi, will you play rom hacks in the future? possibly Radical Red, or Inclement Emerald?
2:26 Surprised Pikachu meme
Any PMD video is a video I must see
Definitly a good story.
Have you thought about playing the ranger games
I love the pmd series.
WE ONLY WANT 100 HOURS VIDEOS PLS
YOU SOUND EVEN MORE OUT OF BREATH WHAT'S GOING ON
POPOOOOOOOOO(this took a few tries since it always autocorrect into p**p
How about a vid on u speedruning the mystery dungon story / beat main story of all main line mystery dungon games How ever fast u can with out game breaking bugs if ther are any
Nice a 100 hours new video
i miss pmd so much 😭😭
I sort of dislike how the big bad isn't a pokemon. Like, it's just some entity. That takes a lot out of it being a Pokémon game.
8 months late but I agree, I think they're missing out on a lot of opportunities on not using specific Pokémon as the big bad in the PMD games like they did with Time/Darkness/Sky.
It started with a meteor, then a snowflake and finally some comically ominous looking orb
where can i play this game?
Betting the chikorita not spawning is likely due to the game being emulated, as evident by the World Nexus’s odd colours
21:30 the more powerful your WHAT got?!
The auto captions certainly aren't helping...
23:53 ...so you knew full well what you were saying.
Something I thought about in the PMD games... imagine you just went through this whole journey and you finally get to go home and some random pokemon you've known for maybe a month forces you to come back and stay away from home for an indefinite amount of time. Basically kidnapping-
Comment for the algorithm
this convinced me to download this game. also pokemon infinite fusions when 👀
Evolve your Pikachu damnit
15:17 persona 4 moments
I loved the original game
Next red blue team
I loved playing this too but pgti was the best!!!😊😊😊😊
Which console is this game on?
3DS
so, is there a way to play this on pc?
not unless you emulate it illegally
it is annoying you failed your challenges because of an over/undersight in development when going to dungeons you can press l to see how many floors a dungeon will have so since you completed destiny tower before getting the quest for it soft/hardlocked you from getting all connections
cant wait for the 100hts or 100 days trend to end good lawd
Algorithm:)
so hard
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I found Super Mystery Dungeon so utterly underwhelming compared to earlier titles. I also think that the more "modern", "3-dimensional" look hurts it rather than it helps. Story-wise, explorers of sky just set the bar insanely high as well, and the first PMD titles were really amazing in that regard.
glad to be not featured in this
I hate it that its impossible to level up in this game
Sorry you failed the challenge, Indutro. I think the fact that you can't 100% the game because of a bugged Chikorita means that I will avoid this game forever. *sigh* If not even hacking Chikorita into the game will fix the problem, this game is pointless to play. :(
Super Mystery Dungeon is an EPIC PHAIL, which is sad because all of its predecessors were awesome. X(
Actually.. he just had bad luck. You would find it on original hardware in the cafe quite early on, so.. #blameCitrus #GetItForReal!
2d version is way better the new generation is cheap
