A few things. I actually thought the Nuzleaf plot twist was great. They make you really grow to like the guy, not only because he's a parental figure, but also because, when compared to your partner's father, he's a lot less strict and easy-going. He sorta plays into that mindset kids usually have, that strict parents are overly mean and less caring, while more easy-going parents care for their kids more. Sure, he does leave town a lot, but considering you meet him in a forest outside of town at the beginning of the game, I just figured he traveled a lot. There's even a scene where he visits Lively Town for a bit that seems to support this. Though, to be fair, I forgot Nuzleaf was even a dark-type, so I can see someone remembering that and seeing the twist coming. As for the Mew plot-twist, I actually think it's my favorite "goodbye" sequence in the entire series. First off, the twist that your partner was the Mew from the ancient past is great. It's hinted at early on by your partner knowing the ancient writing and with the scarfs, but it still shocked me when it was revealed. Not only that, but your partner having to leave instead of you is a great twist of the usual endings of the series. I can understand it being a bit confusing as to why your partner leaves, but from what I could gather, it's because of Dark Matter's connection to the ancient Pokemon. DM was born from the negativity of the Pokemon of the ancient past, meaning it's a part of those ancient Pokemon. Since Mew is an ancient Pokemon, destroying Dark Matter, in turn, ended up destroying Mew. Your partner evens says something like "By destroying Dark Matter, I set my own destruction in motion." As for the memory loss plot hole, I always took it as Nuzleaf and the Beeheeyem thinking that a psychic blast knocked out your memory, but it was actually Mew wiping your memory at that time. Nuzleaf does say that it was a psychic blast that wiped your memory, and Mew is a psychic type, so it would be easy for them to make the mistake. Something else to note is that your partner actually kinda lies about why Mew decides to wipe you and your partner's memories. Your partner says it was to not make the same mistakes you made in the past, but that's because you must've both known that destroying DM would destroy Mew as well, and that knowledge must've lead to you both not properly destroying DM in the past. You destroy DM in the future because you're both oblivious to that knowledge. This is hinted at as well, with you saying something like "did I agree to lose my memory because I knew what was coming? Did I know I couldn't go through with it otherwise?" It's a great reversal on Explorer's ending, where you know that stopping Primal Dialga will destroy you, but your partner's in the dark about it. Here, the opposite happens, and it's such a cool experience to have the roles reversed. If you think about it, your partner is the real main character of this story, not you. I mean, even the Partner's Theme is remixed everywhere in this game. Even the 2nd phase of the final boss has a bit of the partner's theme in it. Speaking of, I'm surprised you didn't talk about the music. The music in this game is fire. Fire Island Volcano, Showdown with a Volcanic Entei, Dark Matter Phase 2, Reverse Mountain, Mystery Jungle, and so many more. I also love how they use the music to tell a story by remixes certain tracks in different situations. My favorite example is how the theme "Treasure Within Your Heart" (a theme that plays early on in the game after you and your partner adventure in the Drilbur Mines) gets remixed for "Time to Part Ways", because you're parting away with the treasure in your heart. Speaking of the partner, Super's is my favorite one in the series. I love the character arc they go through; starting as a hyperactive troublemaker, then by the end of the game being much more mature, while still obviously being your partner through the way they act. It spoke to me a lot more than the partner's of the previous games, and they handle it so well here. Your partner may mature over the course of the game, but they never become a stick-in-the-mud either. Even after defeating Dark Matter, your partner is bragging about how awesome they are. One scene that I really love that shows how far your partner has changed is when you both first arrive back in Serene Village after being turned into stone. You're partner is scared to death about what may have happened to everyone, including her father, so she decides to hurry over to Lively Town without looking back, because the whole world's at stake, and if she goes back to check on her father, she might be too devastated to continue on. It's a great little bit of character development. Gotta say, I agree with the connection orb though. I miss the design of the bulletin board, and having unlimited missions to do, but I love how easy it is to recruit Pokemon now. If there ever is another game in the series, I'd bring back the bulletin board, but make it where completing a Pokemon's mission rewards you with them joining your team. To avoid not having unlimited missions, maybe make it where instead of Pokemon you recruited taking breaks, maybe make it where they end up going on their own adventures and need rescuing from time to time, meaning that's the only way you can use them again. You could also bring back the random recruitment from the previous games on top of this new system, so you can have duplicates of the same 'Mon. Overall, despite some flaws with the game, this is still my favorite PMD game. I love the story, gameplay, music, characters, and the cameos and references to the previous games. I understand why some wouldn't like certain aspects about it, but this game just resonated with me.
PS: Sorry about the stupidly long comment.

"A few things. I actually thought the Nuzleaf plot twist was great."
      - I REALLY envy you on this. When you put it like this, I can see why he's so liked, and I do like him both as a villain and a father figure. I just saw it coming and that ruined it for me. I'm really glad you enjoyed it though. As I said, I even envy you.
As with the Mew thing, I think you're right, and I can now appreciate the partner leaving and the dynamic between this game and Explorers. However, what are the odds that just as the Beheeyem hit you with a blast, Mew wipes your memory in that instant? I dunno if the timeline even adds up. Think about it, they hatched their plan there and then, moments before you wake up. Mew would've been long gone by that time and the partner has grown up in Serene village, so... timeline wise, it still doesn't add up.
Still, again, I'm just really glad to hear you enjoyed these things so much. They're truly special games and even if this one didn't hit ME that hard, I can easily see why it would hit others. It's just a good game.
And so is the music. I elected not to talk about the music or the graphics as the video was already long enough as is, but I wholeheartedly agree. The music is wonderful, and I love your interpretations about the hints the titles give away, especially when paired with their remixed counterpart. Really observant stuff. Thank you so much for this comment!

I'm going to attempt to defend the partner getting upset from getting called annoying. So the game outright states at one point that the partner isn't really close to any of the other kids, and there's plenty of scenes of her outright getting bullied by Shelmet and Pancham. Also throughout the game you can see she tends to bottle up her emotions, such as when she gets bullied by Pandcham and tries to act unphased, as well as much later in the game when you return to Serene Village after everyone gets turned to stone. When the player character shows up and starts hanging out with her she feels she finally has a friend, so she becomes a bit more emotionally vulnerable, so when you (her only friend) tell her she's annoying, like all the other school children tell her, she just can't take it.
I could be looking too much into this, but this is just how I interpreted her outburst after you tell her she's annoying.

    • @Focie

It's more that it's such an overdramatic reaction to a question that had a pretty gentle "let-down".
I think subtlety would be the name of the game here. I have no problem with her feeling really sad about that, we all do. It's more that I don't see that particular reaction as very... uh... well written.
Yeah, I'll just sum it up as "You can have her feel just as upset, but maybe a little bit subtler"

But Krokodile's story was ended. He was basically hired for Nuzleaf as a red hering. With legendaries.. you mean the others shown in the scenes where they talk about being "threatened" by Dark Matter? because that point does come together with them working together to stop it as best as they could. Mawile's teasing is bind to the non story moments of exploring the world, since now you can explore the complete PMD world compared to past games.

okay, so I think I can shed some light on the memory loss thing, if I'm remembering the story as I played it.
The player evidently had their memories wiped, this was given. However, the misinterpretation was what memories Mew had actually wiped from you. The memories that Mew had wiped were the specifics of what Mew and the player did to defeat Dark Matter the first time, basically the first battle attempt, however the player still had most of their memories intact and knew their basic task upon arrival in the world's future. However, the Beheeyem psychic attack when they came to that world was strong enough to wipe all the memories of the player, thus making them forget who they were for the most part (the basic stuff of PMD games). This was how I interpreted that one bit, and I can see how that may have been seen differently, and while the localization may be the likely issue,
the way I saw it, Mew wiped the memories of the first Dark Matter battle (like SRing on shinies) from the human, and the Beheeyem wiped all other memories from the player, which is how I always interpreted the plot for this game.
You don't have to take my word, though, it's been a while since I played the game, I might replay it just to confirm this information.
As per the Nuzleaf twist, this caught me off guard for the reason that I didn't catch on to this, which is what made it so dang intense, especially when we quote, unquote, "died."
And with the ending of the game, I was caught off guard so badly, especially when the pieces came together in my head for it, which made the ending so much more heartbreaking, but as you said, there was that slight hollow cavity in there that very well may have been lost in the localization process. Overall though, I enjoyed the game from end to end, and it sits in that #1 spot alongside EoS forever on
P.S: Partner's theme is so touching after experiencing this, at least for me (also sorry for buncha typing)

I've been thinking of something that could explain the memory thing. It's been a long time since I got to that part so I'm probably very wrong
What if what Nuzleaf said was all a lie? That they knew what really happened to you beforehand, but told that story to demotivate the player? To give him such a shock and fill him with so many questions and so much doubt at that moment, that it would lead to him being less focused on his way to save the world and make him ultimately fail. No one can stay focused on a task when they have so much on their mind. And betrayal can lead to many difficult questions that won't go away easily.
And knowing how powerful Dark Matter already was when you appeared, he certainly would've known about you, even expected you. So there would've been enough time to hatch a plan.
Yet again, I'm most likely terribly wrong and I'm sorry for that. But it's always interesting to take your own guess at a problem

Personally, I think there were two memory losses. Mew wiped out our memories of the time we battled against Dark Matter. That's the first wipe. We traveled in time but on arrival, we were attacked by Nuzleaf and his lackeys. One of the attacks hit us and we suffer from short term memory loss forgetting that we were attacked in the first place. Noticing this Nuzleaf decides to change the approach and trick us into undoing the seal instead of forcing us to do it.

I think the next game should really delve into the traditional human amnesia pokemon protagonist. Like, really dig in to the mystery of your self proclaimed human identity, with conflicting evidence to both support AND disprove that you were a human before you became a pokemon, or are just delusional. You could even potentially have the main villain of the game be a human turned pokemon as well (maybe even randomize what pokemon form they take in the story as a direct parallel), and, if going with the route that you were not a human in your past life, have it revealed that you were the pokemon partner OF the human.

I assume that you did have your memories since Nuzleaf did state you were fighting him and his comrades at the beginning before you knew about it so possibly you did have your memories for a short time before regardless if it was Nuzleaf’s doing of your memories being wiped (but my belief it was a red con because when he said he did it he was as being brain washed meaning it was likely it was your partner because if he was brainwashed then the Dark Matter is likely controlling what he said) or your partner, it makes more sense you did have your memories for that amount of time from the beginning of the fight until you figured out you were a Pokémon (which I assume it was a few minutes)

    16:05 I love this guild!
They gather a crew that reminds me of many old RPGs where they may not be effective in every field but efficient in what they do due to their natural abilities and individuality, a great example is the Straw Hats pirates from One Piece and it's great to have this here.
You may be not as, an expert in an area as them, but they relly on your friendly and helpful nature, as well, curiosity and wonder to do the right thing, as the game goes.
I believe that they should test you along the way to polish you and maybe try to direct you to that question... "what do you want to do when you grow up? What is your very dream to become?"
That would be a great filler, since you were a human and reminds you that you wanted to be a Pokemon master back then, but things change and now in a total different place and environment, you may have to choose something different, it's this kinda of things that would be amazing in this scenarios, to tell kids about how the real world may work sometimes and fort the adults(or young adults) that play the game feels connected. Oh well, at least these concepts will live forever in my mind and I show people about this way of thinking without being harsh or mean about it.

I think the biggest reason for the Connection Orb being so advanced for a Mystery Dungeon game has to do with the in-game time period. If you compare the way the buildings look in Lively Town with how they looked back in Rescue Team, it seems Super is at a point in time where technology has developed a lot. Also, even though I understand how the Connection Orb can feel unpersonal, I actually really like its design. It's reminiscent of a starry sky full of constellations, which is a call-back to when Partner said they wanted to have as many friends as there are stars in the sky.
I know PSMD is not a perfect game, and it has many flaws. But it's still my all-time favorite Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game.

It is such a love letter to the franchise, and both the art style and music are awesome! Sure the story wasn't mapped too well, and the characters weren't as emotionally engrained, it still felt good.

    Well Let's see...
For starters, I wanna thank you for this video, I feel like you are the first person to cover this video in a deep way on UA-cam, and I really appreciate that, since this is one of my favourite games of all time.
Now, watching your video, It leaves me scratching my head a little, because it amazes me that in almost 40 minutes you still didn't mention a few things I deem to be of importance. For example, the graphics and the music, which I believe to be pretty strong points to this game, especially the latter. I think the script could've been better handled to make room for those kinds of things. Also, I feel like you should've mentioned a little bit about the epilogue and all the post-game content, since the game has a lot to offer gameplay-wise after the main story is over.
Regardless of all that, I feel like some people miss the point to this game's story. I mean, sure, you save the world and all that, but it's that really the important thing happening here? Because I'm pretty sure the game was trying really hard to make the partner the focus of the hystory, and I'm pretty surprised you didn't really say a lot about her (the partner). First of all, the way you meet and get to become friends with her is, to me, the most genuine one of the entire series by a lot. I always felt like I was being handed a character to care about in the other games, while in this one, your friendship with the partner got built up from the moment you meet her. When she actually asked me if I wanted to be her friend, I didn't say "yes" because I was meant to, I said it because I had grown to know about her dreams, her endeavors, her conflicts... and so I wanted to be there to support her, since nobody else wanted to. My frienship with the character in this game just made sense and felt justified to me.
More than anything, I feel like this game is about "acceptance". The way you accept the partner despite her flaws or the fact that she might get you in trouble from time to time, the way she accepts you as a human even though nobody really believes you, and the fact that the partner ends up accepting dark matter as a part of the world and the main character accepts it as well in the epilogue, not caring if it ends up coming back. At the end of the day, negative emotions are a part of our life, and we need to learn to deal with them, right? Going by this, I don't really see why someone would judge the story to be "unpersonal" or simply "epic". I mean, c'mon, the partner's theme has a variety of remixes and shows up every now and then within themes like "don't give up" or "make it!".
The partner character from this game is my favourite in the series. Not only do they grow as a character, having actual flaws to improve on, but the game actually calls her out on them unlike Explorers of Sky/Time/Darkness, which simply makes you pity the partner's cowardly nature. They feel like an interesting character that's fun and endearing to invest into, and your firendship with them always feels balanced because the main character's stoic personality compliments her reckless anticst. It also helps that the main character actually has lines of dialogue this time around, similarly to Gates to Infinity, and takes action several times in the story. This game's characters don't really grow as a result of the game deciding to focus on the partner instead, and the fact that you didn't really have to earn the expedition society memeber's trust seems to me like a decision to make them feel like a more mature and level headed group, as opposed to the Guild memebers in explorers, which were more like apprentices.
I understand that character's like this game's partner are "hit or miss" for a lot of people, and her character arch might not have been your cup of tea. But I still feel like you really left a lot to talk about here, considering that you actually addressed the partners from the other games a lot more. I also know the ending can be a little confusing, and the point you bring up about the memory-erasure is a good one, but I believe that it's a really good plot twist considering the series' tendency to repeat the same ending formula for every single game, with GtI mixing it up a little bit, and putting aside the memory thingy, it really makes sense on retrospective. This game's ending was actually the only one in the series to get me close to shedding tears, which is kind of ironic considering you had the opposite experience, and I feel like, just like in GtI, the reactions from both sides are realistic. When you part ways, both you and your partner feel sad about it, and your partner even pleads you not to cry, which really hit me when I played it.
There's some more stuff I'd like to say, but I wanted to focus on the partner (just like the game we're covering here) and this comment is getting pretty long already... so yeah sorry about that.
Despite the things I just mentioned, I still enjoyed your video quite a lot, and I hope to see more stuff from you in the future, I actually really liked the way you covered this games.
    Have a really nice day.

    • @Focie
      @Focie  5 років тому +4

Thank you for the well thought out comment... And yeah, it's close to 40 minutes and it STILL feels a little rushed here and there. Originally, I had plans to have a friend of mine offer his opposing views on the ending and the characters, and I think that'd have been a really interesting dynamic, but it had to be cut for time. Mostly because the comments here allow me to flesh out my thoughts a bit and engage in discussion.
I wish I talked about the music. I really do. I wanted to. Both music and graphics, but to really do them both justice, it'd have been around 10 minutes longer, and I already saw this as an impossibly long project. The music and graphics are both phenomenal. I love them both, which is surprising since I'm usually not too into 3D graphics. Much prefer the old sprites. However the world is just so colourful that it's hard not to fall in love with the style. Musically, there are so many tracks that really get you. Remixes, hints to the themes of the game, etc. Both earcandy and braincandy. Much appreciated pieces of music have been written, and I like the soundfont used. Ultimately these additions to the scrips were also scrapped in the interest of time. After all, the main piece of focus here is the story, but I should've maybe dropped at least a few lines about the music and graphics here and there.
I do like how your partner does go from being almost insufferable in the beginning to somewhat more dialed back in the end. It's a subtle piece of character growth, I agree.. But it's not really... a satisfying one, if you get what I mean? She's never mean and then turn good. She was always good. Just a bit... free spirited, let's put it that way. Not really something to GROW on.
If the game's focus is on the partner and the partner's growth, I would have liked to see more of the ramifications of the partner's life. As far as I know, you see this about... once. When you come back from hell, she opts NOT to go with her impulse and see Serene Village turned to stone. This is a wonderful moment which does show her growth, and I appreciate it. I just wish it was just one stepping stone of many hinting to the change, rather than be one of the sole examples and climax of it all.
The final twist on you NOT leaving was one I really appreciated from the change of the formula, but in the end, it did feel like a twist for the sake of having a twist, if you know what I mean? Sometimes this game felt like they did this or that just for the sake of doing it. "going through the motions", I think I called it in the video. Dogs being asswipes for the sake of setting up a chatot-like redemption arc, partner leaving for the sake of changing it up a bit. It's not bad in and of itself. Actually really appreciate the effort. I don't think I saw that coming at all, but... As with the theme of acceptance which you had already laid out, the partner had already accepted that she had to leave. You had not. I think the clash here is that your partner didn't seem particularly sad due to said acceptance, but you were. I think... I think I'd have liked it more if neither party had accepted it. That would've made them play more off each other in regards to dialogue, and I can imagine that being pretty heartwrenching.
Still, all of this is of course subjective. That's how it goes with these sort of things, and I can definitely see why you enjoy the game so much. I'm not in any way shape or form saying it's a bad game. I'm only being hard on it because I love the series so much. I think it can reach further than it did. I want to see it become the defacto RPG experience.
In the end... I guess all I can say is... thank you so much for the support and the comment. My videos are never perfect and I know this one has a lot of flaws here and there. Still, I'm so grateful people like you take the time to come and write a comment. It means more than you can imagine. Thank you very much!

In regards to the Nuzleaf thing:
I always took it as Nuzleaf wiping your memory of your initial encounter with him.
The beat you up and such, and then play it off as Nuzleaf being the Hero, and the Bahayeem are the ones after you (they dont even really try to get you).
He also didn't know that your memory of the events were already wiped, he just assumed you knew it beforehand.
So the Nuzleaf memory wipe is totally unrelated to the Mew one.
Also I for one didn't expect him to betray you, since, he took the time to take care of you and stuff, and he already was an established member of the village i think.
I hadn't thought much of him leaving, I just figured it was an adult having some errands to run.

  • @Yarcaz
    @Yarcaz 4 роки тому +3

I know I am a late, but hopefully some people see this comment.
In my opinion, for the whole memory thing I always had assumed that mew had wiped your memory in the past after the first dark matter event, and then your character wandered the world and you made new memories. And finally in the present/future you had your memory wiped a second time by nuzleaf and the beheeyem. So you would have been screwed over two times for losing your memory. And this would fit in with the story of apparently losing your memories from 2 different times.
Alternatively mew could have just erased memories of itself from you along with the implications of destroying dark matter. So you would still retain most of your memories, with some missing. And then you fully lost the rest of your memories when nuzleaf and the beheeyem went to wipe your memories.
With either way of things happening you were screwed over with forgetting things. Humans as pokemon need something to shield themselves to prevent this from happening.

That's AWESOME. I also really, really like it. Usually, all these games have issues which detract a bit. In Rescue team, it was a little too simple in scope for the gameplay and story. Still REALLY good, just a little bit simple.
Sky's story was good, but told in a really horrendous way. Your character has a tendency to repeat what you just said, and the flashbacks are... plentiful to say the least.
Gate's story was bad, but its characters were great. At least some of them.
And super has its own issues discussed here... but flaws and all, they all have wonderfully redeeming qualities and I find myself loving all the games all the same

Explorers also kinda did the reverse of that ghost/dark prejudice thing. I don't know how anyone's supposed to not think that Dusknoir isn't gonna be some kind of bad guy, especially if you played last MD games and have ever read ghost type pokedex entries. Basically every ghost type is some spawn of devil that exist only to eat small children and drag their souls to hell. But when it went out of its way to not only help us but to also solve the conflict peacefully, I started to have doubts. And then it turned out that sike, he was bad guy all along, Sableyes are also murderous little shits, Spiritomb tries to molest Grovyle and later we find Frostlass keeping Scizor captive and then there's also the final antagonist. Boy did they lean hard on that ghost/dark=evil. It was kinda disappointing since I was positively surprised when a kids game made me think of my own prejudices and why I have them. The last thing that should follow such revelation is that you should have just stuck with those beliefs. I think that's the reason why they made point to follow through with that twist in following game

You don't get nearly as many potential people as this game gives you, but since the concept in .hack is that you're a bunch of gamers playing an online game, sometimes the other people in your friends list are off doing IRL things (or other story things without your knowledge) so you have to message other party members to tag along instead. I completely agree with your thoughts on the game. I do wish you touched a bit more on the music side though. Like one of the reason I really like this game is because of the music. The first half of the songs are really cute and relaxing, but another part is in generally just sad. One of my favorites, Depths of the Submerged Cave sometimes strikes me hard as hell. That song alone gives me feelings of regret and nostalgia, almost as if I'm watching the happier times of my life. Allow in me to only watch and regret what I've lost. Then there's the music that's just so so so good to listen to like fire island volcano and dark matter's second theme.

It really sucks to say, but I had to cut out my thoughts on both music and graphics due to the length already. Luckily, I can fill you in here.
I love the music. It's earcandy in all the right ways, with remixed old themes, remixed themes you heard before, etc. The partner's Theme Leitmotif just works so well with this game and I adore it. I also really like what they did with the graphics. I'm usually not a fan of low poly 3D models and tend to prefer sprites to 3D models in general, but the game is just so gosh darn colourful. How could I not love it?

  • @WorldOfMinds
    @WorldOfMinds 5 років тому +1

The next PMD should star the very first human that never really loses their memory.
This game was the first to humor the idea that you, the pleyer pokemon, were possibly not a kid at all. You just LOOKED like a kid to the others.
So I would love it if the next PMD would star a player character that had no amnesia. Or at least they didn't feel like they did because they knew their previous life's history and what their world/time was like in extensive detail.
I like the plot twist that you actually had two instances where there were events you should remember. So, maybe this isn't your first time around like with Mudkip you here.
Maybe, like in infinity, you were helping, albeit unknowingly and maybe not in your present form, someone you are opposing now.
Alternatively, maybe a story where you AREN'T the human who got called to the world to be a pokemon and the human who DID get called turns into your partner a little later on. Maybe after you find them in a dungeon, left in a bad way. And perhaps, they aren't the best person in the world. Maybe they are even have a bad attitude and/or aren't innocent in mind. Think "they aren't a terrible person, but they've seen some things.
Would also be nice if one of you was a starter pokemon and the other was a non-standard first evo or second evo to demonstrate the difference in experiences, but maybe that's a bit broken gameplay-wise.
    Point is, something non-traditional.
I agree with your points and like your own thoughts on how they could write the narrative as well ^^ I think I woulda liked Red Rescue more if they HAD made you a bad guy who needed to work at redemption. Instead, that game came off as a bit... plain to me.

My interpretation of the memory plot hole was always that you didn’t get your memory wiped until you were in the middle of the battle with Nuzleaf. Like, you were transported to the future, started fighting Nuzleaf, and then Mew wiped you memory. That still leaves the plot hole of how Mew wiped your memory from the body and mind of your partner, but I’m willing to believe that maybe Xerneas didn’t put Mew “to sleep” until after that happened. Idk. That scene still made me cry.
