He's literally taking over where Sagan left off. Sagan had it easier because the majority of people believed in science then. I've looked at some of the mathematics Sagan did to help the JPL in launching and sending satellites. He tried to explain some of the math behind it....tried. deGrasse has the exact same astrophysics knowledge, even more so since Sagan theorized about exoplanets but they had never found any yet. If you asked deGrasse, he could explain the math they have to take in consideration (such as the gravitational pull on Earth from our own sun and using spectrometers, etc.), but he does try to keep it simple so that even someone like me can understand.
If you go back to the last time he was on the show he explained the difference between established or old science (the Earth isn't flat) to new science which hasn't been established yet and is still being tested. You cannot imagine how much trouble this creates. Nutrition and physiology is a field that is still not understood about metabolism but yet millions are led to believe in crackpots like Dr. Oz. Or to hit closer to home, DST. People argue with me that this absolutely establish science, but it's based mostly on psychology and again physiology, sorry to pop your bubble, are hardly established sciences.

@@rabbit251 In the past, people were a bit embarrassed by being uneducated or illiterate. Now, there are too many people that think they are experts and demand that their voice be given equal weight to people that have spent their adult lives studying and researching. A five minute Google search does not mean you know anything about anything; especially something as difficult as science. As a corollary, imagine going up to a life long farmer and saying, "I've never farmed in my life but I've 'done my own research' on Google and will now tell you everything you are doing wrong."

I just finished reading Sagan's Cosmos again after about 40 years. It's sad he died so early, but he predicted that in the future we would send land vehicles to Mars (he had been involved with the Viking missions which were stationary), and predicted more satellites exploring other planets. He also predicted that we would find exoplanets and said where we should look first. He would've been so proud to have lived in these times. deGrasse, who studied under Sagan, must feel this also but feels the threat now of people regularly dismissing science and now that is his mission to fight that ignorance. (If you search Sagan, you can find a clip of him testifying to Congress in the 1970s warning about global warming and climate change. We knew for decades this was coming and even today we refuse to believe the science and do anything about it.)

  • @MelioraCogito

While I can appreciate Neil's enthusiasm, it is at times over the top, bordering on camp - he is not the 'story teller' of science, he is merely its 'cheer-leader.' Science doesn't need a showman, it needs someone with a calm demeanour who can draw out the excitement of 'awe and wonder' from within their audience that plants a 'question-seed' in their minds to pursue more knowledge.
For me, Carl Sagan will always be the preeminent story teller of scientific history and its pursuit of knowledge and the joy of "awe" discovered by it.
*We* _are the Universe manifest conscious. The Cosmos getting to know itself._
_“The mind once enlightened cannot again become dark.”_ -Thomas Paine

Dr. Tyson is like a recurring cosmic event. Similar to Halley's Comet--but less frequent. People like him come along maybe once in TWO lifetimes. His energy and enthusiasm for teaching AND learning is very rare. Once most people reach a certain goal, they tend to plateau. They become arrogant and smug in their accomplishment (s). Dr. Tyson is ALWAYS excited for what comes next. His sense of humor coupled with his unending desire for more knowledge, is contagious. The PERFECT teacher...

There are people who think Neil is a fake and not really a scientist. Well, he has a PHD in Astrophysics has done post doctoral work. He is the real deal. So he talks about other subjects, he still has great insights into a lot of other subjects. He is not just a cold introverted person in lab coat, but much more. His love of science and engineering is infectious and he shows so much enthusiasm about it. He is a credit to the scientific community IMO.
