"Will people listen to scientists?" The question I've been asking for decades in this country. “From this distant vantage point the Earth might not seem of particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here, that's home, that's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. “The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. “Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. “The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. “It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known." - Carl Sagan, mentor to Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson Happy 50th Earth Day, everyone. As Dr. Tyson advises, keep perspective, listen to experts and scientists, don’t panic, and keep working and doing all you can to keep this tiny, blue dot of a planet healthy for everyone and everything on it. Not just for today, but for the future as well. It’s all we’ve got. That may some day change, but for now it’s all we’ve got. Peace, love, and science ☺️👍♻️🌎🌍🌏❤️
His explanation of how Earth Day came to be almost made me teary-eyed. For a brief few years in the '70s, humanity seemed to finally get it: The Earth is our mother and we must take care of her, each other, and our animal and plant siblings who also call her home. We're meant to nurture them, not have dominion over them. Blessed be. )O(

Pale Blue Dot is one of the most important and reflective speeches about the human condition and our place in the Universe. The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of Earth taken in 1990 by the Voyager 1 space probe from a record distance of about 6 billion kilometers from Earth, as part of the solar system Family Portrait series of images." ua-cam.com/video/EWPFmdAWRZ0/v-deo.html Enjoy :)
We go to space because it's impossible to learn more about the universe and our place in it if we don't. Earth-based instruments and sensors have reached the limit of resolution in most fields of measurement. Too much atmosphere in the way, too much electromagnetic interference from the earth itself and our presence upon it. Some great leaps were taken once we started sending telescopes and experiments into space, we need to keep doing so.
You should still ask yourself that. Plants and animals have built this earth along with fire and water, for how long now? We just started going to space over 50 years ago. If going to space was so important, how has the entirety of earth's eco system survived this long without going to space? Neil knows his knowledge is not a survival skill. In a way, none if the things he says even matters. Were just like "omg, this guy is so smart" but if a rock the size of Everest did indeed wipe most of us out, and he survived that by preparing ahead of time... does he have the skills to forage for food, or build his own shelter? They should make a "cast away" sequel of Neil deserted on land, where he admits that his space studies was completely useless and he should of learned survival skills instead
I wish if we had a teacher that can explain like him.. our teachers are literally wasting our last few years in school which are the most important educational years

Exactly
"Will people listen to scientists?" The question I've been asking for decades in this country. Reporting from researchers invariably get drowned out by corporate disinformation, and inevitably public safety suffers - whether it's from Coroavirus or climate change. If a society wants to survive it shouldn't dismiss what scientists report.
You must live in Europe....

And as for the original comment. Will people listen to the scientists??? Well people will listen and then discern truth from lies, you see many of us have been spinning on this rock for long enough that this "global climate threat" is not the first time we have heard this. The fear mongering works great the first time, but it doesnt do so well the second. We learn to look at the indicators, heres a good one. If the earth is heating up and the ocean is going to swallow up mass swaths of land near the ocean, then why is waterfront property in New York, la, Miami and elsewhere not vacated and being sold for pennies on the dollar? These places are ran by the people you agree with, why did the former president who signed the Paris climate accord spend millions on a waterfront property after signing it? He cant read the science? He doesnt understand the ocean is going to swallow up his multimillion dollar mansion? Or is it something else? Having been down this track before when it was al gore who was driving the pace car in this race to stupidity... I'm here to say... it's something else.

we should conduct a protest for Pluto. If Pluto wants to identify as a planet, we should stop calling it a moon!
We also have a whole REAL Earth vying for your affection, the place where we actually live, noone seems to care about that rock either.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is definitely the most humorous astrophysicist I know.
Bhagavati Dasi How many astrophysicists do you know?🤓
Feynman, just sayin
Oh right, not an _astro_ physicisy
and how many astrophysicists do you REALLY know?
@@SuperBabytee1 I think that question was replied by Stephen Colbert already.

You lost me at "OBEY!"
He is a true educator and this country needs more people like him than it ever has before.

King Khan ? 😂
ITS SCARY CAUSE EVEN HE IS A PAWN
@King Khan - No he wouldn't

I have been asking "why are we going to space?" for decades and this is the first good answer I have ever heard.
Best answer I ever heard also. It brought tears to my eyes.
"Carl Sagan gives the best speech ever about humanity and how foolish we behave. Pale Blue Dot is one of the most important and reflective speeches about the human condition and our place in the Universe. The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of Earth taken in 1990 by the Voyager 1 space probe from a record distance of about 6 billion kilometers from Earth, as part of the solar system Family Portrait series of images."

Enjoy :)
3 words: Fermi paradox solutions. That's why.
Finally! Been waiting for Neil to come back! Yay!
I wish if we had a teacher that can explain like him.. our teachers are literally wasting our last few years in school which are the most important educational years
If Dr. Tyson ran for president I would campaign my heart out for him.
You're a celebrity worshipping dupe.
Andrew Yang, a man running on pure facts and logic was running, yet no one championed for him until it was too late. So I doubt Neil would make it past Super Tuesday.
Which of his policies do you support the most?
Gord Taylor Democracy Dollars, Ranked Choice voting, and honestly his ideas with an economy based on human health not just capital gains and such. His ideas were better than all the candidates running in my honest opinion. Yeah ubi was a good idea, but those other ones alone can either stop or nearly get rid of corruption in the political sector.
@@AllMightMedia any idea if he has any political aspirations? As a Canadian I can't vote for him but America has such a huge impact on us I'd support anyone that could steer your government in a positive direction.
If you listen closely you can hear the crowd murmurs at “my next guest is the director of the hayden planetarium...” this is so awesome and i hope as a society we continue to elevate academics, scientists and knowledge seekers high above the celebrities and “influencers” of today!!!! SCIENCE
basedharrybeats that’s the thing. the only reason why NDT actually made his way into the public eye wasn’t through cosmos - he’d been doing that for a while. he crossed over because he was able to talk about star trek and star wars and other pop culture more extensively than others scientists could. sad reason, but that’s the one.
also NDT has turned into a conceited, pompous asshole who really just likes to hear himself talk.
@@osmoticmonk Who gives a shit? It's not his job to be likeable to everyone.
I'm into astronomy and physics because of a video of this man and the way he talks about science. Now you can see how important he is...
This shows how passionate Degrasse Tyson is about Astro physics SIR,SALUTE from India I'm more than just impressed by learning how passionate you are.... WOWW THAT PASSION ❤❤❤❤I'M OUT OF SUPERLATIVES TO DESCRIBE YOU
Colbert: Isn't it wondrous that we have just found a mini-moon orbiting Earth?
Dr. Tyson: IT'S JUST A GODDAM STRAY ROCK

That must be what it's like to "Love your job" and "find your calling".

That fact that this even has to be said is sad.
Hearing Neil talk reminds me of the good old days when everybody was like a little kid (80s, 90s I was a kid at the time, but I watched how adults behaved), wondering, dreaming and thinking of how science would make this and make that in the near future while reading books and magazines that fed our futurist thought patterns, thing that kept us hyped for the future. Nowadays is more like doom and gloom, tech is "bad", science is seen as contemptuous and everything is politicized to a point where its disgusting. Even worse, it seems that mainstream society has become more obsessed about the end of the world than ever before. Fatalist tendencies are through the roof, especially on social media... WTF happened?
no truer words has been spoken. how could people be freaked out about 5G and future autonomous systems? its the things we dream about in the 80s!
@@VongolaSekundes Yeah man and even worse when every time something cool and futuristic pops up, people immediately go for the "its going to give us cancer" or "Its mind control" or any paranoid thing they can come up with. It reminds me of the days when people were afraid of using ATMs because they were gonna "steal our money".
