Same in Australia. Virtually clear of the thing now, though still taking all the basic precautions to prevent a resurgence. The economy, though it's taken a hit, will recover. Why couldn't America, with all its wealth and expertise do this?

I honestly don't know much about asteroids, so I'd do what we Americans do these days: I'd get on facebook and see what Dave from high school that failed every science class he ever took has to say about them. Then I'd confirm my decision to listen to Dave by finding the one scientist that posted something that vaguely supports his claims, no matter how many experts on the subject say otherwise.
Or, I'd turn to the experts and see what they have to say, realizing that not all opinions are equal. Either or.

NDT is just so friggin adorable... I feel the same way I do when watching a super cute 3-6 year old child who is so excited they can't help but run-dance in place as their voices get a bit higher in pitch, a whole lot faster, and totally incomprehensible... except this child is my real definition of genius-knowledge beyond the stars (even about the stars!) with the ability to teach it to others. All the joy of a cute sweet tiny child AND all the responsibility and knowledge and badassery of a rare specimen of adult with compassion to boot? Yeah, he isn't one of us. He IS the alien. That's why he's giggling. He's the alien who hasn't been here nearly long enough, given their general 45,000 year life spans [can only hope], to fully grasp earthlingness so he still giggles with excitement and sometimes lets his important planetstate secrets out, not understanding why we don't address it... he's figuring out we're real dumb down here, I think. Over the next three months, she worked closely with Tyson, then 59, on the Cosmos set in Santa Fe. He was beloved by the crew, often having lunch with them, high-fiving everyone, and even putting on impromptu science demos.
Tyson quickly promoted Watson to be his assistant. She met his mother, wife, and son when they came to visit, and he met her dad, sister, and fiancé. She thought he was a charismatic and friendly guy - until the night of May 16, when she was driving him home after a long day.
Tyson invited her up to his apartment to “unwind” over a bottle of wine, she recalled. She felt uncomfortable as he gazed into her eyes and held her wrist to feel her “spirit connection.” They spent two hours together, as he made sexual references to song lyrics and described his need for physical release. As she was leaving, he took her by the shoulders and said, “I want to hug you so bad right now, but I know that if I do, I’ll just want more.”
On the car drive home the next day, Watson said, he told her she was “too distracting” to ever make it as a producer. She couldn’t stand the idea of working with him any longer. The following day, she reported the incident and her resignation to a line producer, who suggested that Watson tell everyone she was leaving due to a “family emergency.” So she did.
As she processed what happened over the next few months, her mind often went to the woman who claimed to have been raped, Tchiya Amet.

We got meteors for November... just let us face the aliens in December already.
    Fuck 2020

Seeing Neil made me think of Sci-Fi. Imagine the current situation set in some Mars colony.
"There is a vises in the soil, we have to wear protractive clothing." "You baby, just do your job, it's only one person."
"It's spreading. We can only meet other people if we wear out space suits, with helmet on." "Helmets violate my freedom. It's my God given right to not wear a helmet."
Hmm, come to think of it, that's one plus side, if we really do get to live on Mars one day, we have a text book on how not to do it.

In New Zealand we did listen to the scientists and it did (largely) pass us by. Life here is now much the same as before, except for tourism and foreign travel. We have to wait for the rest of you to catch up before we get them back...

The thing about meteors is that according to every movie I've ever seen they are like fires and earthquakes and no matter what you do they chase you.

Why is this asteroid so important to people? The Chelyabinsk bolide was around 20 meters, and it ended up exploding high in the atmosphere. The likelihood that it hits water is 70%, and it's very unlikely it would hit a population center.

Neil's always a great guest, no matter what show he's on, because he's ridiculously intelligent and knows how to explain very complex topics in terms most anyone can understand, while at the same time not talking down to his audience. We need more teachers and scientists with that ability.

In Neil's defence, he did say "If we ALL paid attention to what scientists say..." but obviously American people and the rest didn't. So I would still give him an A+.

At first I thought "Couldn't February have a blue moon in a leap year?", because I remembered the lunar orbit is slightly less than 28 days - but when I looked it up, it turns out that the lunar _cycle_ is slightly more than 29 days, because the earth and moon have moved in relation to the sun, during those almost 28 days, so the visible _phases_ do not line up with the _actual position_ of the moon..
So, no, even in a leap year, there's not enough time in February to squeeze in two full moons.
Neil deGrasse Tyson infected me with the learning again!
