Dave Brought Home a NEW BIRD! 😳😖 (Are Budgies BULLIES?)

- I am not sure there's ever been a time where we didn't AGREE on getting a new addition before actually bringing home the new addition... especially a pet dove.
For those of you that follow our performance careers, we often have a flock of doves which we always give back to the source/breeder for continued good breeding. We tend to get a different flock every time but on off seasons we do not house them with us (it's especially stressful housing doves during the winter, so I try to avoid that at all costs, even though they are local wildlife where we live.) so we've been dove-free since the beginning of 2020 when Covid hit and we stopped doing live shows. Soooo... this was a shock to me!
PS - doves can have my seasonal feeding system! Fresh food is great for them, too! Even though you saw our new dove sharing my budgie's seed mix - I do use a specific seed mix for doves.

@@cailin7203 One of my budgies does it to my other budgie, I can tell when it happens because the budgie that gets landed on makes a very offended quack-like squawk.

Yeah. I have 3 birds. A female spice finch named Pip, a male society finch named Baebae, and a female blue peachfaced lovebird named Luxa. Recently, I fell in love with an umbrella cockatoo, hahaha. You can't help who you love.
Some people do better with big parrots and some do better with small parrots.

Capri is a tiny Bird Whisperer. She's such a natural with any bird and it's a pleasure watching her. Congrats on the new addition!
Awww. He/she is precious!!! I love how he fluffs up like baby parrots do. You should definitely do some videos on dove care, dove nutrition, and dove training! I would love to see it!
Pretty much all baby birds do that, their juvenile feathers aren't as good at keeping them warm so they fluff to get a layer of warm air around their body. Helps that it's so dang adorable too

So now as you own a dove as a pet bird, could you make a video on how they are different to parrots and if you would recommend getting a dove instead of a parrot for bird-beginners? This would be awesome!
A turtle dove was my first pet and I was around caprice's age aswell, so yeah I believe doves are great beginners birds since they're way less feisty and nippy than parakeets.
Doves and pigeons are great beginner birds, and very underrated pets in general! Doves are usually less 'aggressive' than pigeons in nature, but of course it depends on the individual bird.
If you settle for a pigeon I would recommend looking for fancy pigeons rather than regular racers/homing pigeons, since they're more laid back in terms of energy. Think of it as a couch potato bulldog or an energetic husky in comparison :)
Personally I myself have a homing pigeon and he gets the zoomies, but also loves to nap a lot.

At least the dove is with you guys who will for sure give him/her an awesome home! I definitely will say I’m on your side when it comes to not being 100% thrilled about a surprise bird showing up in your house, when there wasn’t a real discussion beforehand about it .
I used to be a pet store manager and one of my biggest pet peeves was people coming in and wanting to purchase a pet on a whim without talking to their spouse. Especially when it was a bird! They are NOT an impulse buy, and you should always have a discussion before making them a part of your family! Answer the questions of if you can commit the time to the new bird, can you provide a proper diet, if it is your first bird, are you willing to make some changes around the house for the birds safety (no Teflon, no scented candles/aerosols, etc), can you handle the noise level of that bird, are you willing to put in the time to training the bird, etc etc etc. Most of the people who came in buying a parakeet or even a cockatiel or a conure I would often see them return less than a week later realizing that 1)their partner was not ok with this and 2) they themselves didn’t realize what they were getting into. And it’s stressful on the bird having to go into a home and come back to the store because now we would have to quarantine the bird for 2 more weeks before it could go up for sale again and it’s always difficult for the bird as well.

I know what you mean. People don't think about researching the kind of pet they want. It wouldn't kill them to do that. I greatly dislike it when they impulse buy birds or any pet without really discussing it further with questions about what you put in your comment. It would save them the trouble of to just buy it and then bring it back to the store later. I feel for the birds or any animal whenever they bring them back and various other reasons. It's really disappointing.
I grew up around magicians in the family and a traveling carnival. It would be soothing to hear the dove coos 🥰 I hope by now, 3 or 4 months, you guys are adjusted and happy with the decision 🕊️🎩😍
My sun hahns hybrid is a bit like Mayday where she flaps about so much more than the average parrot, and seems to have zero flight plan... but she doesn't care, because unlike a dove, she is a skilled enough flyer to get out of any situation. But she is a very untidy flyer, just like the dove.

Thank you for all the great information about budgies and how they act around other birds. I learned that the hard way with my budgie and my Bourke's parakeets. The budgie was just so mean to them; always in their faces; he'd chase them and land on their backs, and they definitely cared about it a lot more than your dove! It seems like people ask all the time if they can keep budgies with other birds, and the answer is almost always "no" for the safety of the other birds!

Awwww just so gorgeous... you had me laughing so hard with Blueberry’s tactics and Fidget’s cluelessness, Budgies are definitely feisty little things but that’s even funnier that they are so little yet have a big and tough personality 🥰🥰 Seemed like Blueberry would take any opportunity to show Fidget that she’s boss and yep Fidget had pretty much no idea by the looks of it....

Thanks for the dove video! My first bird was a dove named Q-tip. She would actually go after the family dog when she was out of her cage. It was hilarious because the dog was terrified of her. She lived to be 24.
I feel like this is going to evolve into a pinky and the brain relationship 😂 blueberry will have reigns on fidget mayday soon, riding around the house😂😂
Dove babies are so cute and sweet, and then they grow up and turn into little buttholes 😂 some of mine can be so mean to each other, but also super sweet. You'd be surprised how tough and defensive Barbary doves can be, but i keep mine with other docile species with no problems. Its so cool to see you guys finally make a video on the Barbary doves!

I can’t wait until my life is stable enough to get a bird 🥺 I’m graduating soon (my living situation is changing before too long) and I’ve been doing research to get a bird since august 2020. Your channel has been such a wonderful source of information and has made me 10x more confident in my ability to take care of a parrot. Thank you for all of the wonderful and helpful content, I never want to stop learning and I can’t wait to rescue or adopt my own!
For a first bird lovebirds and cockatiels are great. Budgies are a bit more skittish and harder to tame. Although a hand raised green cheek is awesome.
@Sophia Coleman I wasn't thinking hormones but that was my mistake. Very true. the lovebird I used to have was a rescue(not from a rescue but from a bad situation) and the people got her from said she would lay eggs every other day during the spring.

There is no "good first bird", its all abou preference. Living with more people and would get noise complaints? Eclectus - get attached to multiple ppl and arent noisy, but very sensitive to diet
@@kenna6903 I’m definitely leaning towards maybe a green cheeked or caique of some sort. I still need to visit some rescues and spend time with some birds to get an idea of what type of bird would be best suited for my life and if I can provide the best environment for their life. However, it’s especially hard because of the pandemic and I haven’t yet located a good bird rescue in my area. Hopefully I will hang out with some birds soon!

GUYS IM GETTING A KAKARIKI TODAY, I’ve already got the enclosure set up and I’ve turned my room into a bird safe room for free flying when I’m there, I’m so excited she is a rescue and has a picking issue but we had already informed our vet and we are going to work closely with them to give her the best care and rest of life possible x

Capri literally has my dream life.
I had a rescued mourning dove since she was a baby for 8 yrs (she passed away last April 😢) but she was a very wonderful bird. Like you said, no destruction and they’re very quiet. She was my buddy. She would free fly the house and she would always sit with me either on my chest or on my shoulder. I sure do miss her 😔.
I had four budgies, 2 girls and 2 boys. Two of them paired up & they were so mean to the other boy and did exactly that plucked all his feathers around his eye! Thankfully he recovered fine & moved him & the other female into their own enclosure and no more issues!

Supervised only otherwise Blueberry bullies the dove endlessly. Dave once put the dove in a travel carrier and BB obsessively stayed on top of it. 🤓

I think you misread Blueberry. I feel that Blueberry is showing pure love and affection. As for the feather pulling, my budgies do the same on my eyebrows. It is their way of bonding and showing love! Blueberry absolutely adores Mayday!
Doves are the best pet birds. They're hardy, they're friendly, they get along with everyone and anyone... they're just very easy, very pleasant birds to care for.
I had a ringneck dove with my ex girlfriend, her mate had died some years prior. For whatever reason, she took to me over my gf and her son, I guess she saw me as her mate, and she'd bow coo and do that laugh call at me all the time. She bonded to me so strongly that I'd take her outside, not free flight trained at all, and she would rarely leave my side. When she did, she didn't fly more than 30 feet away, and made sure she could always see me. She would fly back to me within a couple minutes. my head was her favorite perch lol
Hahah love the dove.. my son had two that were so attached to him.. they didn't like my husband. When my husband would turn on the TV they would koo so loud to drown out the TV or die bomb him in the head. Love the new addition. I am surprised you guys didn't have doves a long time ago with magic shows. Love the video thank you. We use your videos on bird sites on Facebook to educate people with parrots. Amazing videos!

I have been taming my female budgie that I have named Rosa. So far she getting used to me. I take her out every few days because I have life but I am making leaps and bounds in order for her to trust me.. It's all thanks to you guys.

I have 2 Albino Ringneck Doves! They are such amazing birds, I rescued my first one December of 2018 and my second one December of 2019 and they are the best birds in the world🕊🥰

Blueberry is such a hen!!! Hahaha the bully factor is so much worse with hens!!! And budgies will kill by attacking the head/eyes. Ive unfortunately seen it happen way too many times
I have all male budgies and a male cockatiel with another male cockatiel coming this month. But I never have them housed in the same cage. The budgies have a huge cage in the room they are in. My cockatiel has his own big cage. I know female budgies are more territorial and can be mean bullies more than the males. I can only imagine seeing what you have seen too many times. One thing my pets know is that I'm the owner and I want them to get along to some extent like meeting halfway or further like best friends.

Years ago, we had a Budgie and an Australian Bar-shouldered Dove (much smaller than yours) who lived very happily together. They were a bit wary of one another at first, but it only took a few days before they became firm friends.
When I see a dove, I always think of magic or Illusion. I also think of new beginnings, freedom, and peace.

I am glad that you mention that even small birds can be bullies! Size means nothing to some of them! My Ringneck will try to bully my Scarlet Macaw! She thinks she is ten times her actual size!

I am a big fan of doves. I keep Diamond and Zebra Doves, and would like to keep more. Not only is it their look, but they have sweet natures.

Also: in my experience, budgies bully each other relentlessly, let alone other species. They are simply bullies, even if they love each other.

My dad use to do that with dogs. If he saw dogs running loose he’d bring them home, he loved dogs, dogs and cars. He’s beat some ass too when he saw people mistreating dogs. My dad was huge, 6,4” and a brawler in his day. He loved animals, particularly dogs. His dad raced pidgins when he was a boy and a neighborhood cat got in their coupe and killed all his birds. My dad was devastated. I miss my father so much, I just got my first ever parrot in December and I wish he was here to enjoy her, I know he’d love her and she’d love him. All animals loved my dad, I guess they can just sense who they can trust. One time we were at the park and some guy kicked his own dog in the rear end and the dog yelped in pain. My dad ran right over there and asked him if he felt tough, he told my dad to f-off and my dad dropped him right there on the spot. The guy dropped the leash when he went down and my dad said, “come on, boy, come home with me.” And there you have it, we had another bow-wow. He walked his dogs for miles every day, took them for car rides, bought them all their own ice cream. I’m convinced animals sense who they can trust, I’ve never seen any animal not love my dad.

When you said it was odd that parakeets could bully other birds because their so small I laughed because my brother owns a sun conure that both of our dogs are terrified of, and ones a full grown golden retriever.

Lmao I love you guys!! Your chemistry is funny, raw and unconditional. That's marriage lovey. My husband and I go fist to cuffs all the time. When we get to 'that point' we run our outsides in our skivvies and paint ball each other. Not only do we live in rural upstate PA. But the minds here are rather small. Needless, to say our neighbors think us to be crack heads lol. My husband Chandler does same thing but cars, motorcycles, horses and even a peacock at one point. I LOL'ed really loudly you said "doves don't really attack anything, including a human" I'm the exemption to most things though. In HS I had a humming bird attack me and stab my head repeatedly, a pair of mourning doves attack me when I was starting up my car to go to school, scrub jays dive bombing me in my backyard and one pulled my hair, ducks and geese chase me at parks, lmao. I swore for the majority of my life that all birds just hated me for whatever reason until I met a male grey goose at an animal shelter who just loved me.
Laughed out loud when you said this is how blueberry treats his friend, cut away to blueberry on fidgets back in shower. Sorry I didn’t know blueberry was being a jerk it looked friendly. I learn so much every time I watch!
