Currently my cockatiel is eating roudybush pellets, I want her to be eating tops pellets. roudybush pellets are the only thing that got her off of seeds. I am soon going to go heavily on transition to tops pellets. she also eats veggies. we are still working on her eating veggies. I am going to get her on your seasonal feeding system once she is eating veggies regularly!
@@Abbanellie well it depends on the kind of pellets. Roudybush is better in overall quality, but that still means you have to look into diffrent kinds like: veggie, fruit flavoured and so on.
This is a great episode! What you said about don’t punish, I learned from my daughter with dog training. There are other techniques to use to achieve the behavior you desire. Like giving treats for good behavior. Or using distraction. Alot of this can be applied to toddlers & young children! Can’t wait for part 2. 😊
YES YES YES YES!!!!! I often find myself arguing with my husband over this! The pittie, the conures, his nephews...So many better ways to get the actions you are looking for and showing what can/should/need be done!
I feel like most creatures learn the same way (BF Skinners square divided into 1/4th) HOWEVER ONLY HIGHLY EXPERIENCED AND EMPATHETIC trainers will have success with any type of punishment as a last resort and that most pet owners should avoid punishment at all costs. I also get annoyed however when trainers call themselves "positive " Exclusives and regularly use negative punishment - just because it's subtle doesn't mean it isn't punishment - and the general public might hear that a certain type of punishment is useful will sadly misuse such advise and inadvertently abuse their pet. I love Bird Tricks for many reasons - and thank u sincerely
I once had someone tell me that it’s not ok to clip birds wings UNLESS the bird is a macaw. I cannot make this up. When asked why macaws, the person responded, “they’re big birds so they can’t feel pain”
Oh gosh so many horrible bits advice haha! 😂 The grabbing and flicking of a beak and telling them do REALLY upsets me - how about ready their body language, your own actions and what's going on in the environment and shape their behaviour to stop them biting! Great video as always and loving the orange hair!
I’m in the process of adopting a parrot from a rescue that made me take a 4 hour basic bird class, at the end of which they said “And we clip all of our rescues, and recommend you clip as well” I’m having such a hard time not telling them off about that because I’ve already got my heart set on this parrot that they’re fostering that I want to adopt, so am on my best behavior. But if I didn’t want to rescue the parrot so badly I would give them a piece of my mind. They also said “No round cages” lol. But the wing clipping really set me off. It’s amazing how people can set themselves up as experts and give out such terrible misinformation. Thank you for not being one of those people!
I'm really glad you mentioned the fruit issue with (Australian) parrots. Australian plants are extremely old on the evolutionary scale and the bush practically doesn't have sweet fruit. The fruit trends to be hard like gum nuts or full of seeds and starchy like Morton Bay fig. Australian parrots are extremely sensitive to fructose and given regularly will cause all kinds of metabolic diseases, allergies, infertility and a high dose can place the parrot into coma. Fruit orchards cover their trees not only for hail and bird protection but also as a strategy to preserve the native birds that were becoming sick and infertile. Boot the 'fruit and vegetable' phrase appropriate for humans and adopt GRASSES AND GREENS. One of the most convenient ways to improve the diet is to grow the discarded bird seeds and feed them as greens. You need to add more greens. This way inflammatory omega 6 and 9, and lectins have been reduced, it's organic and full of exclusion zone water essential for all flighted creatures.
Worst advice i got was when we trained our boi to wear "backpack" for transmitter. I was chatting with seller if he have some trick for birds to quick get used to it. And his advice was :"Just put it on and wait till he stop trying to get rid of it." Aaand that was point we stoped talking😁
Way-way back...1990....when I got my African Grey, it was all wing clips, all the time. There was really no free-flying community back in the day. My bird never learned to fly. I stopped clipping her wings 10+ years ago, but she wasn't into flying and man, I regret that so hard. When she got her super sized cage, she wasn't able to fly across it. It's nice to see how far bird ownership has come.
Omg I know! I had budgies and love birds as a teenager (and finches as a child) in the 80s, and we basically never let them out of their cages except for very rare occasions. And the cages weren’t large either. I feel so terrible looking back now. We basically treated them like ornamentation. I feel like it’s one of the great things about the Internet, improving the lives of pet birds and increasing awareness
OMG YOUR HAIR!!! you look fabulous wow. Anyway great video! People always come to my small Bird UA-cam Channel with questions that I always send them your way! I always tell people to do their research and if they don't know look at bird tricks website or ask Jamie! 💕 we need to all do right by Our Feathered Friends 🐦🖤🕊🖤🦜
I tried to adopt a parrot here through a parrot shelter, but they demanded a diet of ONLY Harrison's pellets and nutriberries, and they demand to keep you parrot ALWAYS CLIPPED! You have to join an event of them once a year where they check on the bird. Because a clipped bird will never be a happy social bird. I backed out and adopted a beautiful Amazon from another shelter.
My gal and I just recently discovered your channel as we came to foster (possibly adopt, no owner has stepped forward in close to two weeks) a beautiful Indian Ringneck. This was so informative and gave us so much good information that we can use to help us get our new friend as calm and happy as possible. Thank you.
Almost all of these I personally feel like are so wrong - you can’t ever force anyone/anything to want to love/cuddle or even play. It won’t ever work if it’s only one sided
My mom wanted a tame bird, so she wanted the pet shop employee to handle my cockatiel first. Her wings were already clipped, and so he would pull her over to him by her tail feathers when she ran away. He said that was how he trained his bird...
So glad you mentioned your conures powdering the pellets. I just transitioned Tulsi to your pellets, she loves them and it took no work to transition her but anyway- I was concerned because she leaves SO MUCH POWDER behind. SO much. I weigh her so she IS eating but good grief the powder, I was concerned it's being wasted. Why do they leave so much powder? What are they eating if there is so much powder lol
I was purchasing a couple birds from a pet store, and while ringing up my very reasonably sized cage, the cashier told me that my cage was “too big” for 2 budgies and I should get this tiny tweetie bird looking cage instead. WHAT????? Never purchased anything from that pet store ever again.
Jamieleigh, maybe you've mentioned it before, but what are your thoughts on avian lights? Are they important or necessary for birds that do not spend any time outdoors?
My Citron hand-fed until she was 1.5yrs. I acquired her at 4mo. She is now 30. My Severe hand fed until 8mo old. He’s 22 now. I’m glad I was never told not to hand-feed.
I was told that tops pellets were bad because they don’t have added vitamins. I feed it because I don’t want the artificial vitamins. And honestly I’ve received so much bad advice it’s crazy but I just go with what ive learned from you guys
We got a 22 year old male Alexandrine Parakeet recently about a month ago from a bird rescue near us and his previous owners said his favorite food was tacos. Ugh, they must have fed him literally everything because he begs sooo bad every time we eat anything. Do you have a video that addresses this further? we do training with him and he Loves it so i think we can get this to be better over time. When you said the dog begging thing, I was like Bingo! That's exactly what it is. He's not aggressive about it at all but just LOVES food. We feed your seasonal diet and pellets which he loves both just not sure how to address it further.
Omg, my first bird's breeder also told me to holding him in my hand (basically in a banders grip) atleast once a day every day to "keep him tame", I did not follow that advice because I could tell he didn't like it and as a result I have a bird who loves me and I can still put him in a banders grip without a towel when I need to for vet exams because he isn't afraid of me.
I’m picking up a conure this week. Poor girl is only a year old and seems like she kinda got put in the corner and forgotten about. What would be some advice for getting her comfortable the first few days and her cage being in a active environment
The place I got by bird, they told us to let them stay in their cage for the first week and interact during the second week for ten minutes a day. I knew that this was not the best idea, so I disregarded that. But then, later that day, they called us and told us that that's not true, and we should start interacting with the bird much sooner.
I've read that getting a buggy or other bird I mirror makes it less lonely because it will bond with what it seems is another bird and I've also heard that getting a mirror makes them aggressive because they think they have a mate and it's a nesting box that they have to defend. It seems like either both or neither of those things would be true
I've seen others do that! One member on my husband's side did this to our Sun when she started to not like those in her flock. I freaked out, but she couldn't understand why, even when explaining that doing that is going to cause some serious behavior issues. She also thought it was funny to pull her tail. Then, THEN she would get made that my little baby tried to bite her! Seriously, teasing and set up a bird for behavior problems doesn't work! OYE! Tiki was NOT a dog that she was training! And I don't train dogs like that, either! Some people think they know better than you, when you are the one who has and is always do research to learn the best for your family critters. Just...OYE!
I think the vet wanted to say that dark veggies are full of iron so you should be careful with the amount. Correct me if Im wrong but many people boil spinach a bit for this reason before they give it to their parrots. But avoiding dark veggies all together is a big no. They are very important part of the diet. :)
My neighbor rescued macaws, when I got my cockatiel she told me and showed me how to clip his nails by throwing a towel over him and forcing him on his back so he couldn't bite her. Needless to say we didn't ask for more help from her
@Wattle she toweled my bird and forced him on his back, he was terrified and confused, of course he tried biting! He hated every second of it. You should teach your bird to let you trim their nails intead of forcing them
@Wattle he was a nice bird and would've been fine but she just toweled him anyway. He was fine being touched and was just a baby but she didn't care and that's called fear training and it isn't good
I have a question. About how much fruit would an Eclectus need in its diet? There really isn't a lot of information out there on their diet, aside from not feeding pellets.
Lots of worst advice vs excellent advice on this vid. Quite a few that could really help with the problems we're currently experiencing with our Blue and Gold, Winston (or Mr P!) .. Too late to watch the other one now (gone 12) but can't wait to watch part 2 tomorrow. Thanks for putting this on vid
I was buying pellets in a Pet. Smart when I saw a gcc and Sun conure for sale. A woman was wanting to buy a bird and asked if the sun was a quiet bird because she lived in an apartment. The Pet Smart employee said both were fine to live in apartments and both conure's were quiet.
They'll say anything to convince people to make a purchase. Pet stores are absolutely the worst places to get advice and information about pets. Maybe there's a few rare independent pet stores with ethical, knowledgable owners and employees but in general pet stores are terrible
What’s the best pellet for a cockatiel? I have a 9 month old cockatiel. I feed him Roudybush, because that’s the only type I can get him to eat. My breeder sent me home with Zupreme, but Piper wouldn’t touch them. Right now I offer him a combination of seed and Roudybush. I give him vegetables on a foraging tray in the mornings. It seems like he mostly plays with them though. He does seem to like kale and snow peas in the pod.
I'm loving your videos so educational. Have too admit so many of these theories my whole life in Australia. Was disappointed when I found out you live in America lol Your family are awesome thank you for making me a better bird owner 🥰
When I got my bird I had asked for a fully flighted bird as I already knew clipping a fledging bird was not ideal. The breeder said nothing about that amidst the conversation we were having otherwise and I had forgotten about it. When I showed up to get the bird (having already paid!), not only was my bird clipped but it was a BUTCHERS job of a clip, so short that I could see the skin of her wings. When I expressed my disappointment and upset with this, he laughed and said he hadn't thought I was serious, and then that he did it for her safety to prevent injury. Meanwhile he had almost injured her just from clipping! I was so upset. On top of that, when he was giving me his "lecture" about care, he said I had to leave SEED ONLY in her cage 24/7 and only feed pellets once a week, and NEVER FRESH. He followed it up with saying he didn't want to hear about it if I didn't follow his instructions "and the bird died", because it was obviously my fault I had killed HIS bird. Wtf? Thankfully I already knew better and had experience with birds so I followed NONE of his "advice" after I left, and gave that bird a much nicer home. Will never go back to him again, and caution anyone I know away from him when they look for birds.
First of all, I love the hair color. BEAUTIFUL! Now, I was so distracted by “Hey Cutie”, I absolutely rate this video #1, THE BEST VIDEO EVER! LOL❤️❤️🦜🦜🕊 Oh, please remember to pick up your next video with the owner who had a remark about their bird named Elvis. This was an informative and very funny video, thanks for making my day. 🐥💖NanaJ🐥🦜🕊💖
THE HAAAIIRRR!!!!!! OMG I LOVE IT! Also my friend thinks she’s an expert in birds so when I got one she told me that birds need super small cages since they need to have a small safe space? I don’t have the MOST time but obviously I do spend time with my birds. But they spend a lot of time in their cages. So they have flight cages instead.
Worst bird advice I've received (And this is genuine) is that veggies aren't necessary as they don't get a bowl of fresh veg in the wild, and for that reason, seed is all they need. I was never told about toys or enrichment at all when I researched birds! Only figured it out through you guys. Also, when I got my bird, the breeder asked if I wanted to clip. I asked if it would affect her at all and she said no, it only makes her ground-bound if she gets out of the cage. IF she gets out of the cage. Long story short, she wasn't clipped :). Maybe you should have one of the macaws in the next video XD.
The place I got my cockatiel from said to leave millet in his food bowl because that should be a big part of his diet, good thing I had birds previously and did my research because if I didn't I would've listened to them 100% :( also I LOVE THE HAIR!!!!
The worst advice I ever got was on the day I was picking up my sun conure, the lady I got him from told me his diet should consist of ONLY SEEDS! Thankfully I had been watching BirdTricks for months before getting my bird lol
Bondi is just part of the ambiance. Like music at a restaurant. Just needs a volumn knob. Still not healthy enough to adopt another bird, but always love new knowledge.
I need chop chop ideas for my Green Cheek. He throws most of it out of the bowl- it seems. I do carrots, peppers, kale, and a pinch of steamed sweet potatoes. I give him sunflower and millet as a treat - sparingly. I do Harrison’s pellets - which are always avail in cage. He’s fully flighted and has full range of the house so he uses plenty of energy. I just would like to see him more excited about his chop chop. Any ideas? My little 1 year old rescue is a sweet heart. I just need food ideas.
My parrots have food out and available all day, BUT... they seem to primarily eat breakfast and dinner, for the big shindig. During the day, they just stop in for a quick nibble. So they seem to know when they want to eat, and don't overdo it. That's just my personal experience. I have 20 birds of various species.
My vet told me the same thing - Harrison's and no vegetables. I was very confused. her reasoning? I needed to make sure they got "all their nutrition." WTH?
There is a video here on youtube that says to trim your birds beak with nail clippers! (Im not an expert so I dont know if that is good or not, but birds should probably have the ability to grind down their beak on special toys and stuff)
I gave my blue and gold pieces of steamed beets. For a few days she had beet colored poo. Yet my African Grey didn’t have that happen to her? Are beets o.k for them?
If I took a shot each time she said "hey cutie", I'd be dead before the end of the video lol.
yeah I thought the same :D I would be very drunk by now :D

I am soon going to go heavily on transition to tops pellets. she also eats veggies. we are still working on her eating veggies. I am going to get her on your seasonal feeding system once she is eating veggies regularly!
Roudybush is way better than tops, can't you stay on them?
@@Fin-fm5mv The main inredients in Roudybush are corn and wheat....
I also get annoyed however when trainers call themselves "positive "
Exclusives and regularly use negative punishment - just because it's subtle doesn't mean it isn't punishment - and the general public might hear that a certain type of punishment is useful will sadly misuse such advise and inadvertently abuse their pet.
I love Bird Tricks for many reasons - and thank u sincerely
The towel one scared me so bad. Why is there so much wrong information out there, who thought that that was a good idea?! Poor bird 😭
I once had someone tell me that it’s not ok to clip birds wings UNLESS the bird is a macaw. I cannot make this up.
When asked why macaws, the person responded, “they’re big birds so they can’t feel pain”
OMG! Just...OMG!!!
Clipping feathers isn't painful?.....It's like hair...
@Wattle You're completely right, I just wanted to say that if you do it right, it shouldn't hurt.
By their logic If you don't like having your kid runaround loudly, cut off their legs after all "they're big so they can't feel it"
at the second part i had the urge to murder that person.. violently
Ugh, that’s horrible! 😠 Beak-grabbing⁉️ That’s just....I have no words.
I LOVE THE HAIR!!
I’m in the process of adopting a parrot from a rescue that made me take a 4 hour basic bird class, at the end of which they said “And we clip all of our rescues, and recommend you clip as well”
I’m having such a hard time not telling them off about that because I’ve already got my heart set on this parrot that they’re fostering that I want to adopt, so am on my best behavior.
Best new info for me today! Thank you!!!
Worst advice i got was when we trained our boi to wear "backpack" for transmitter. I was chatting with seller if he have some trick for birds to quick get used to it. And his advice was :"Just put it on and wait till he stop trying to get rid of it." Aaand that was point we stoped talking😁
I love your family. It always makes me smile to watch the family free flying birds. What a great way for Capri to grow up.
The worst advice I ever heard was when someone told me if a bird bit you you should not buy it
Way-way back...1990....when I got my African Grey, it was all wing clips, all the time.
Was dat De Moderne papegaai? Welke andere opvang heb je gevonden?
I was told to keep my bird on the kaytee brand seeds
The shop owner I bought my bird, said that if I wanted to tame it, I had to just grab it so it wouldn't be afraid of my hand anymore. I would NEVER
My gal and I just recently discovered your channel as we came to foster (possibly adopt, no owner has stepped forward in close to two weeks) a beautiful Indian Ringneck. This was so informative and gave us so much good information that we can use to help us get our new friend as calm and happy as possible. Thank you.
You are too sweet!! You can be 100% upfront honest and give better advice then what we “hear” on the internet! Thankyou!!! 💜
Almost all of these I personally feel like are so wrong - you can’t ever force anyone/anything to want to love/cuddle or even play. It won’t ever work if it’s only one sided
Your hair literally matches the fire behind you! 🔥 And Bondi's upstaging you with the pacing.....ah, bird life!
My mom wanted a tame bird, so she wanted the pet shop employee to handle my cockatiel first. Her wings were already clipped, and so he would pull her over to him by her tail feathers when she ran away. He said that was how he trained his bird...
OMG!!!!! What in the world...????!!!! Some people should never touch a critter ever!
That pacing on the back of your chair while you talk is cracking me up 😂 such a cute bird.
Truly enjoyed this video!!! The "hey cutie" and "thank you" just made my morning!!! Plus, love the hair!
Your description of flooding was perfect. Made me emotional. 😩
Jamie, I'm so glad you are here to give advice. Everything you say just makes so much sense.
2:55 omg upside-down eating galah!! Made me laugh out loud! Scared my birds with my wild laughter 🤣
Take a shot everytime she says hey cutie.
*Everyone dead on the floor from alcohol poisoning"
I was purchasing a couple birds from a pet store, and while ringing up my very reasonably sized cage, the cashier told me that my cage was “too big” for 2 budgies and I should get this tiny tweetie bird looking cage instead. WHAT????? Never purchased anything from that pet store ever again.
When Bondi says hey cute with her voice it’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard
Jamieleigh, maybe you've mentioned it before, but what are your thoughts on avian lights? Are they important or necessary for birds that do not spend any time outdoors?
Lol! It sounds like that veterinarian was trying to secure himself a future customer 😂😂
You match Comet now! Love the hair! Also, always a great day when Bondi shows up.
I have to admit I love the hair! And of course Bondi. Blue where are you?
Watched it a second time. Saw Blue in the tree early on.
The nodding trick is so adorable. My favorite one.
I was once told that I should get lots of mirrors for a budgie because "all parrots are vain and mirrors make them happy"
I've read that getting a buggy or other bird I mirror makes it less lonely because it will bond with what it seems is another bird and I've also heard that getting a mirror makes them aggressive because they think they have a mate and it's a nesting box that they have to defend. It seems like either both or neither of those things would be true
Bondi looks like a carnival game pacing back and forth. So cute!!
Oh man the beak flick is terrifying advice . I saw that in a budgie group
Just...OYE!
Kind question, may I give soaked yellow millet for my lovebirds? Also is it good to give hard boiled egg occasionally?
I think the vet wanted to say that dark veggies are full of iron so you should be careful with the amount. Correct me if Im wrong but many people boil spinach a bit for this reason before they give it to their parrots. But avoiding dark veggies all together is a big no. They are very important part of the diet. :)
I just dyed my hair with the same ginger overtone! It looks amazing on you!
So much bad advice out there, this is why I love you guys. Best advice and diet a bird can have.
I can't wait to see the macaw that got imping surgery fly again when will you guys show him fly again
My neighbor rescued macaws, when I got my cockatiel she told me and showed me how to clip his nails by throwing a towel over him and forcing him on his back so he couldn't bite her. Needless to say we didn't ask for more help from her
@Wattle are you joking?
@Wattle she toweled my bird and forced him on his back, he was terrified and confused, of course he tried biting! He hated every second of it. You should teach your bird to let you trim their nails intead of forcing them
@Wattle he was a nice bird and would've been fine but she just toweled him anyway. He was fine being touched and was just a baby but she didn't care and that's called fear training and it isn't good
@Wattle he kept getting snagged on my sleeves so blunt nails were nice
@Wattle have you heard of winter?
I have a question.
About how much fruit would an Eclectus need in its diet?
There really isn't a lot of information out there on their diet, aside from not feeding pellets.
I love these videos you’ve helped me train my parrot so much it now goes intro my hair and hands up my arm love the hair colour!!
Bondi is a busy bird! Look how hard she's working!! Pacing that chair like a champ!!! 😂😚
5:26 Bondi teleports away. Cool trick 😎
She’s adorable!!!
I love, love that hair colour on you!
I'm loving your videos so educational. Have too admit so many of these theories my whole life in Australia. Was disappointed when I found out you live in America lol Your family are awesome thank you for making me a better bird owner 🥰
I love your hair!! Wow, this is a really good idea for a video! I enjoyed watching and seeing your feedback😁
OMG the pacing 😱my heart 😍
🐥💖NanaJ🐥🦜🕊💖
Looking beautiful, Jamie! And I love Bondi!
She's definitely rubbish at Bird care. The most your cage is big the most your parrot is Happy.
Where I live, Galahs are everywhere. Almost a pest bird, but I love them.
The place I got my cockatiel from said to leave millet in his food bowl because that should be a big part of his diet, good thing I had birds previously and did my research because if I didn't I would've listened to them 100% :( also I LOVE THE HAIR!!!!
I’m literally your biggest fan, I have an African grey and we’re still trying to figure out how to tame her, but your videos have helped so much
The worst advice I ever got was on the day I was picking up my sun conure, the lady I got him from told me his diet should consist of ONLY SEEDS! Thankfully I had been watching BirdTricks for months before getting my bird lol
Awww the talking was so cute!
I love Bondi!! ❤️
And also your hair is so cool
My parrots have food out and available all day, BUT... they seem to primarily eat breakfast and dinner, for the big shindig. During the day, they just stop in for a quick nibble. So they seem to know when they want to eat, and don't overdo it. That's just my personal experience. I have 20 birds of various species.
My vet told me the same thing - Harrison's and no vegetables. I was very confused. her reasoning? I needed to make sure they got "all their nutrition." WTH?
That hair color looks AMAZING on you!!
Nice hair, also the vet told me to give my Indian ringneck ZuPreem pellets, so that's the diet I am giving it along with fruits and vegetables.
Bondi is literally soo cute 🥺
ooo I love your hair! It suits you really well! Also yes that is ginger, my naturally red haired roommate's hair is that color. Really pretty
Your hair,officially makes you,The Flame.☆
🦜🦜🦜 your hair goes great with the background and bird! 😀😀😀
do your birds recognize it when you switch your color?
