Mareridt (translation: Nightmare) is the highly anticipated sophomore full-length from renowned Danish composer and multi-instrumentalist MYRKUR. Recorded between Copenhagen and Seattle with producer Randall Dunn (Marissa Nadler, Earth, Sunn O))), Boris, Wolves In The Throne Room), Mareridt is a rich juxtaposition of the dark and the light; the moon and the mother earth; the witch and the saint. MYRKUR explores deeper into the mysterious and the feminine with 11 tracks that further progress her visionary blend of metal with gorgeous, stirring melodies, dark folk passages, choral arrangements and superb, horrific beauty. Further taking MYRKUR to new artistic heights are lyrics in multiple languages, an unforgettable collaboration with Chelsea Wolfe and an array of special instrumentation including violin, mandola, folk drums, nyckelharpa (an ancient Swedish key harp), and Kulning (an ancient Scandinavian herding call). Mareridt is a profound manifestation of nightmares that demonstrates MYRKUR as one of the truly exceptional artists of our time.

This is my first time hearing MYRKUR. What a beautiful song. I am touched to hear a Danish woman make a homage to Norwegian nature. Love to all my Scandinavian siblings. Stay strong in these hard times. Greetings from Sweden

Amazing
Really dude? It looks like she's trying so hard to be dark and tough. If you ask me what is the better art direction of Myrkur vids, I'd say "Leaves of Yggdrassil" is pretty good.
It is but there are to many bands doing this same type of video lately, Enslaved I think started the trend not sure but is the earliest I can think of
Myrkur is incredible

Let's face it. Black metal needs creativity and innovation to survive. and this is exactly what this beautiful lady does. Love it. keep it up.
Its black metal at 1:52 the rest is gothic. Very magic
No, it doesn't need that to survive, it has always been niche. I'm not against experiments like that, but saying that's the only way the genre survives is quite a hyperbole.

😭😭😭😭😭😭
as a fan of black metal and most genres of metal, i have to say they all sound the same lmfaooo
I am old 59 yrs skinny bloke in south England and here because Billy Smashing Pumpkins (whom my son enjoys ) mentioned this band amongst legendary acts in his top 10 metal bands of all time .Many years ago I loved what was called folk rock when bands from my country like Pentangle , Steeleye Span , jethro Tull & Renaissance were all we could hear .3 years or so ago I found TREES OF ETERNITY whom are beautiful and many years ago on bbc radio 1 I heard & recorded BEL CANTO light of my fire song. This music is within this realm of Wonderous sound. Thanks to Billy for the nod & to you guys ❤️🐢🏴😁from near Bournemouth in Wessex PS Stick In The Wheel aren’t metal but fine folksy act from London . V nice & authentic.
I had the pleasure of a few short private messages with Aleah (Trees of Eternity singer) on Facebook before she passed, just chatting about her music mostly. She was such a sweet soul, and her partner made a beautiful tribute video to her. To this day I still miss her from only that small basic interaction, so I can't imagine the loss her partner must of felt and probably still does. It's hard for me to listen to her music now, though I still do. I'll always remember her, and whenever she crosses my mind I wish that if there is another lifetime that I may know her. She is indelible, probably to everyone that knew her I imagine . The good ones are always taken far too soon. 😔
While I like the metal stuff on the albums, I really, really, REALLY LOVE the more atmospheric folk stuff with clean singing. So damn beautiful.
This song is flawless. I feel that scream in my core.

Yeah same I love this song so much
I wish she did the soundtrack for Midsommar! That would have been great!
I totally agree!
Still my favourite mykur song
.. the way her voice is so soothing and angelic, then boooosh...... out come the screams.... love it. Its so unsettling and beautiful at the same time❤
The video really completes this song. It really comes together to create one piece of audiovisual art.
I see people judging this based on their expectations of the genre, i will only ever judge this by my expectations of how it makes me feel. Well done, the melodies are moving in just the right way, great contrast with the black metal elements.
Hriðvitnir Málmi Víkingurin if everything remained within expectations then there would be no change or growth, nothing new. It would all get quite boring after awhile.
I don't. this track is good, but very predictable. Myrkur is fake in the sense that by way of careful image marketing and investment from Kristoffer Rygg, in just couple of years has managed to achieve what most bands work decades to achieve... (take Chelsea Wolfe for example).
I think a lot of listeners who are avid fans of a genre fall too far into a comfort zone when it comes to their chosen genre. Some artists even leave the genre because of this.
yep she is so fake, leaving her mainstream pop and rock career for those big Atmospheric Black Metal dollars must have been too much to resist. What a sellout. And yes that was sarcasm.
I viewed about 90% of the comments, and did not come across one hate comment. It all has been praise for her art!
Leaving a Quote for the Elitists:
"It seems that Black Metal has become some sort of religion, but art is not religion. Religion has dogmas and sacred rules and if you don’t follow them then you are doing wrong. Some people in the Black Metal scene are confused. This has become a spiritual movement, almost religious to some, and once you make it religious you create barriers, a circle that limits the genre both musically and ideologically." - Dagon of Inquisition
The elitists are the assholes of life, fuck 'em
Nothing wrong with being an elitist, so long as your principles are sound. Some of Myrkur's work is actually cohesive with what the Helvete scene - in particular, Varg - saw black metal as: an expression or inversion of European spirituality turned inward as a destructive/entropic process. Myrkur is more "black metal" on a spiritual level than shitty war metal.
Damn
yeah, it's also about misogynist gatekeeping
@@spritefroggy excellent observation!
I'm just starting to get into Myrkur. She is absolutely amazing. I love how she can go from such a beautiful angelic voice to blood-curdling screams on a dime.
That's cause she's classically trained in opera I believe!

I got goosebumps from this. What a fantastic piece of art. Love the contrasts you have in your music. I feel you as a human being watching this. It makes my soul long for being there in the wilderness. It reaches deep down inside my psyche and satisfies my most ancient needs. As much as I enjoy my life, I also long for a time where you could find peace of mind outside of civilization.
So that's what your music does to me. And that's a rare thing indeed. Thank you.

All mortals belong in the wild. You are beasts, after all.
I love everything about this. The song the cinematography, the editing, the performance. Everything is absolutely amazing about this video
Personally I love Myrkur. She's like an Enya that isn't excruciatingly embarrassing or a Bjork that doesn't pursue the ideal of eccentricity to the point of being self-indulgent. And, bonus of bonuses, she has great melodies.
This is beautiful
I love her music, her voice and the melodies are majestic, she is a great artist..
Congrats from France !!! All your song are awesome❤. Love the universe😊

Utterly beautiful music and i can`t get over how enchanting this woman`s voice is.

I'm 55 years old and torn between her folk music and this, it's incredible how well she does this insanity and her folk music, I'm definitely a fan.
It's not an insanity, it's black metal 🙂
@@cancelled_user You heard Caladan Brood Kyle?
Obscure, cathartic, Nordic, perfect. All hail Myrkur, the axe murderer.
Do I need to find that black metal documentary where the guy was saying a lot of the classic artists had a wide variety of musical interests (including techno). It's not a crime to like or perform more than one type of music. What sat well with me was an interview with Amalie long before she started Myrkur, where she said at heart she was a black metal girl. But you know Black Metal isn't Black Metal if it's not turning against your own ;)
This track makes me feel like putting on a jacket just listening to it.
I think you're being dramatic.
That was Gylve "Fenriz" Nagell from Darkthrone in the documentary "Until the Light Takes Us." Great documentary. I just saw Myrkur open for Wolves in the Throne Room and Enslaved this week. I had never heard of them before. I am a huge fan of True Norwegian Black Metal, but I was really impressed by Myrkur's mix of Nordic folk music and Black Metal. Amalie's voice is even better live, and her black metal growls are brutal!
ahaha, you so much funny.
So massive and awesome. Thanks for these miracles, your music is brilliant.

dean mastrantoni I think you’re mistaking Myrkur for In This Moment and Butcher Babies...
dean mastrantoni I never said was, but neither did the original comment.
dean mastrantoni she’s personally stated she doesn’t associate herself with the black metal genre, and is just partially inspired by it, so I don’t know why you’re still here complaining. Honestly, go listen to something you like and shut up.

It is simply a piece of art! Thanks Myrkur for this. I am just addicted to this song months already
How can this be so dark and so elevating at the same time? Brilliant

One of the best things I've seen/heard in my life.
She's an artist and a good one. Haters saying she's fake. If she wants to make money out of black metal. She definitely have chosen the wrong kind of music. What do people think bm artist are making millions or something. I heard her pop stuff. They won't really pop more indie I should say. Haters are just jealous
Some metal fans call everything which isn't extreme metal "pop" no matter what the music is.
Most of Metalhead are conservative
Yeah, Metal def won't bring in much food to the table, so it's a rare genre to be wanting to get rich off.
@Lovaniensia There's a difference between subjectively not liking something and a "hater".
Metallica is ''pop''.

It's one of the most beautiful and artistic music I've ever heard.

Really enjoyed seeing Myrkur playing live. Think Mareridt is an eclectic, inspired album full of quality. Stay true to your black metal influences and continue to fuse them effectively with your own musical innovation. Brilliant
I normally don't enjoy female metal singers. I was uncertain about Myrkur as well, but she was just so damn honest in everything she did, which I can only admire. I've never heard of MYRKUR before. It's beautiful and haunting at the same time.
Successful model wants to parlay that success into the realm of music. Fine, stuff like that happens all the time. But instead of going into pop, she chooses one of the intentionally least accessible music forms in existence. Even most metalheads dislike black metal. Whether she’s good at it or not (I haven’t dived deep but she’s better than A LOT of black metal IMO), it’s telling of her musical taste and willingness to delve into the dark and weird, likely fully expecting backlash. AND she’s adding a different spin, rather than being the world’s 10,000th Burzum/Darkthrone clone. I respect it.
Lmao, wouldn't that be splittetcore or danger music?
Beautifully said
Agreed.
This is absolutely amazing!!!

Amélia, your voice is magic, greeting from Madagascar
Black Metal was never ever about blast beats and harsh vocals, they were just the tools that those at the time had available to them. It was about the feeling of grimness, darkness the empty emotionless feelings they had toward the world they lived in at the time. It was about creating an atmosphere of almost sadness at what the once great nation had become. Those who say its not true "Black Metal" probably were not even around Norway at the time of its inception and can never truly understand what it was about. The essence of what it was about has been lost in some backwards fucking pageantry of expensive music videos and overproduced horseshit. This song has some of that essence to it and I salute Myrkur for doing the right thing and not being sheep.
sidarist the first black metal bands weren't from norway.
Since when is black metal confined to norway and it's history or even a specific timeframe? So if we weren't "around norway at the time" we can't even understand what "true black metal" is? nevermind bm not being created in norway anyway, why the fuck would this actual danish model with an actually expensive music video deny the "pageantry" of whatever music you are refering to, despite not being from norway? and what in gods name are "empty emotionless feelings", "almost sadness!? over what the once great nation had become" supposed to mean? So u are arguing that all of proper norwegian black metal is some retarded nationalist reaction to whatever the fuck right wing arseholes think went wrong?
holy shit check for a disability man.
Adanedhel I would if been happy to debate all of this with you, hell guven the right information I might have even changed my mind. Im not so narrowminded and closed into my opinion to change it.
