    Here’s what you did wrong:
1-You overfilled the oil, never do that, you can cause damage to the engine.
The best level to keep the car at, is one square below the top arrow.
2-When pushing the pads into the calipers, always loosen the fluid reservoir cap in order not to create excessive pressure.
And lastly, NEVER EVER go under a car without putting something solid higher than your skull .. like the wheels for example, never rely on floor jacks to protect you from being crushed to death. (This is the California in me talking)

you forgot another point, you need to have the car level when you drain the oil. he would have left an extra half litre in if he didn't level it when draining. this is why 7.45 liters overfilled it. properly drained, 7.754 litres will get you one bar below the max safe zone, which is where you want to be

The ingition went out on my 2003 911 last year. Quote to replace it including maintenance fees was 800 bucks. I ordered the part off of Pelican Parts, cost me 40 bucks, got under the dash and did it myself in 1 hour. Was it difficult? Yes. Was it frustrating at times? Yes. But hey, now I know how to do it. Thing is most Porsche owners has tons of cash to just throw away so they don't think twice about it and pay a shop. Certain things of course are harder than others, but there is a lot you can do yourself and save a lot of money. I only make 70 grand a year, so every penny counts.

For the novice car enthusiasts that may be watching and learning, I'm reasonably certain they were in fact using jack stands, just leaving the floor jack in place as a back-up. Attempting a brake job - or any work on a car - just using a floor jack is no bueno, of course.

Bought my 80k mile 2009 Cayman S PDK (nearly identical spec but silver) about 18 months ago. I've done 3 oil changes, cabin and air filters, complete stereo upgrade, rebuilt and refinished the calipers, battery, Ohlins coilovers with top mounts and drop links, painted the center console, and made a custom trailer hitch. Oh! And I swapped to the paddle shift Sport Design steering wheel--soooo much better, and an easy job. In the next few weeks I've got 4 new rotors and I'm servicing the differential and the PDK.

I got a 968. My initial yearly cost of maintenance consists of a timing belt with water pump and front seals, oil pan leak, all shocks and a transmission rebuild. All of these cost almost $10,000 with parts and labor from an independent Porsche shop and a specialty transmission shop combined.
After addressing the major issues, I spend about $300-$600 a year on maintenance which consists of oil change, coolant fluid every other year, wheel alignment and transmission fluid change every 3-4 years. Sometimes my annual maintenance is $1000 due to old
parts being replaced or tires. Every five years, about $2300 is added to the regular yearly cost of maintenance for the timing belt, water pump, front seals and the camshaft chain check or replacement.
I do most of the basic maintenance by myself and it isn't that bad for a Porsche.

    Excellent video, guys…!
The front brake sensor wires are actually two different sizes. The difference is only about 1/4” but you need to make sure you get the correct one on the correct side. Without going through my notes, I couldn’t tell you which one is which, but just noting it for those who are going to do this in the future.
Definitely drain some oil out of the engine. My Porsche dealer recommends filling up to 3/4 on the bar to allow for the oil to expand when it gets super hot. The difference is only a couple of ounces but it definitely matters.
I didn’t see the jackstands either… But glad you had them in place.
Next time around, consider using ceramic pads as they create very little dust, and still have a lot of stopping power. Constantly cleaning Porsche wheels is not the definition of a good time.
    Keep up the great work!

Back in the old days I had a Porsche 944, and I did work similar to this. Brakes, filters, plugs, the standard stuff. Always got the questions from others, "how can you afford the repairs and maintenance?" I said, "I do all the easy (expensive) stuff myself, and anything else more complicated, or requiring a lift, goes to the shop." It ended up being affordable to own. I do the same with my current GTI, except (knock on wood) it has not needed a single repair.

I just serviced my 981 but you had to remove engine cover so a bit more work. The reason for the sensor tied is those old pads are cheap and don’t have the recess. I’ve seen some channels cutting the sensor off and twisting wires together is not a good idea. I use ferodo pads so I just cable tie the sensor so don’t get brake warning lights and they are cheap from FCP Euro. Also I was able to open brake fluid cap and then just simply compress the pistons against rotor rather than using clamps it’s much quicker. Great interesting video on ell done

A friend of mine had an old Porsche 911 from a time when cars were "easier to fix than nowadays" - and even there, the engine was crammed in so tightly that it had to be disconnected and hauled out for better accessibility at a tremendous cost for every major service.

That dealers rip off car owners has long been a fact; without going into details a Nissan dealer located just North of Dallas once quoted me $1000 to replace a $5 part, literally a 20,000% mark up, with a socket set and pliers I was able to perform the fix in 30 minutes, so even with labor it would have been a 1000% markup, assuming they'd go ahead and claim an hour. Learning DIY car maintenance may in fact be one of the best investments in acquiring knowledge a person can make. I was in Dallas attending a training program for a job, so didn't have tools with me or I'd never have gone to a dealer in the first place. If you really do need skilled repairs done, research and find a well recommended private mechanic shop they don't have a steady stream of clueless car owners that will agree to any price they quote.

Nice job doing this yourself! Here's a couple tips:
    1. Engine oil should be filled should be at the middle middle point on your gauge. This allows for expansion as the oil heats up. If you have too much oil, it can lead to oil cavitation, put increase pressure on seals, and create excessive blow-by in your PCV system.
    2. Always loosen the bleeder screw before retracting the caliper pistons. This will put less stress on the valves in your ABS pump, prevent dirty fluid from contaminating your reservoir, and prevent your master cylinder reservoir from over-filling.

People complain about paying “professionals” you are paying for the experience and the know how.
What is your profession? Are you not worth to get paid?
Don’t forget to add your hourly rate your time is lost opportunity and or priceless.

Most people are happy to pay a professional to do a job, but sometimes they are taking the piss with the crazy prices.

No service stamp in book ? Should've had oil done at garage for service history upkeep

You can just… write down that you did it.
Service history or no, the best way to judge if a car had sufficient oil changes is to cut open the most recent oil filter. It’ll have magic sparkles or it won’t. If you’re that worried about resale value, when you’re ready to sell just film the odometer, then lifting the car, draining the oil, and cutting open the filter in one take without cuts 🤷‍♂️
It’ll be obvious that used oil is coming out of the car, and thus the filter’s contents will tell any buyer what state the car is in.
Could also send your oil off for testing each time you change it if creating some third party record is that vital.

I love seeing inexperienced people fix their own cars. It’s an art that is being lost by the younger generation. It’s fun and it gives people the ability to own cool cars and afford it
