  • Shoutout to ‪@ScottBalkum‬! On his weekly cine chat livestream, Jarred jumped on and confirmed a few things about KOMODO-X for us. On this shot-on-iPhone recap, I take a few minutes to digest all the tea that was spilled yesterday, confirm my correct predictions, and put to bed one hot take I didn't get right.
    What we KNOW FOR SURE:
    1) The name is KOMODO-X
    2) Slightly longer body. Same width and height.
    3) Locking RF lens mount (no four bolt interchangeable)
    4) Large front record button
    5) Modules are being developed
    6) CFexpress media
    7) Balkum Quality Audio™️ upgrades
    8) This is not a replacement Komodo, or a Komodo XL. It is a camera that sits between Komodo and V-Raptor, retaining the popular Komodo DNA: smallest body possible, global shutter.
    What was VERY strongly hinted to (in the RED world, we call this a “heh heh heh”):
    A) NEW 6K Super 35 Global Shutter sensor. 60FPS open gate.
    B) RMI compatibility. Will work with existing DSMC3 7” monitor and forthcoming EVF.
    C) Unveiled at Cinegear next month (WRONG: update 5/8/23: it will be announced 5/16/23
    What we STILL DON’T KNOW:
    ?) BP or V Lock on the back?
    ?) One or Two SDI ports?
    ?) Dynamic range increase?
    ?) H.265 HEVC in-camera?
    ?) Price point: there is no internal price target. They are developing the camera, and will price it once development is done. Could be $9,995, could be $12,995. We simply do not know. (It’s an instant buy for me if it’s under 10 grand)
    ?) USB-C recording for long takes/ProRes shoots? (Unlikely)
    What the Komodo-X will NOT have:
    High Density/Micro BNC ports (Jarred doesn’t like ‘em so that’s a plenty good enough reason to stay with one full size BNC. Plus with the RMI on top, you have dual monitoring options, which is something the original Komodo doesn’t have.
    comment FRUIT SNACKS if you read to the bottom 🍎 🍉 🍊
    This camera will be a great competitor to the Canon C70 and Sony FX6 for sure!!
    Shot on iPhone on location at the Music Center in DTLA.
    0:00 Quick Summary
    0:28 Who Am I (who cares lol)
    0:56 It's Called KOMODO-X
    1:20 Not the same sensor?
    1:36 Better Audio
    2:25 Locking RF mount ONLY
    2:51 I walk into a tree
    3:01 Why Locking RF is better
    3:39 K-X is longer
    3:58 Multiple IO Modules Available (Pro I/O, RED Connect 2110?????)
    4:20 nice
    4:43 NO MICRO/HD-BNCs!!!!
    5:31 Two SDI or One SDI?
    6:02 toss to outro
    6:32 nothing of value after this point

      2 SDI + RMI will be a massive improvement and help increase the value proposition of the -X model

    Live here in Europe - totally off the point - but this footage of downtown LA is nice (LA brings up, I understand, “mixed feelings” for some) - “on the point” - for a “well off” enthusiast like me, the existing Komodo is fantastic but I can understand why pros might welcome the “X” - if the existing Komodo was designed for “crash cam” and some other situations, I imagine it might still make sense for some pros to hold on to it - the lowest price Komodo for that “ultimate” dragster pile up….

    I think this would be a better camera for so many people. Because Red will learn from the Komdodo mistakes and make the Komodo X better

    • @ThomsonVisuals
      @ThomsonVisuals  Рік тому

      I don’t think it’s mistakes per se. The Komodo is excellent for what it was designed for. But it has thoughtfully engineered compromises that make it not the first choice for A camera.
      The Komodo-X will be a no brainer A Camera for sure.

    Is it for sure a super 35?? Will it be a taller sensor for anamorphic? Just saying that he didn’t confirm it as a super 35 from my brief scrub through that video.

    • @ThomsonVisuals
      @ThomsonVisuals  Рік тому +1

      Jarred didn’t confirm anything, but instead strongly hinted that the Komodo would remain S35. It could be S35+ to better cater to anamorphic filmmakers. We will know next Tuesday!

    I'd cop if it's a taller sensor.

      Since this video it’s been “wink wink” confirmed that it is a different sensor from Komodo.

    TLDR: 4k120 and 2 SDI ports or one 3G port that won't fry
    I don't even need 6k 60. I would be happy with 4K120, 2 SDI ports (ya even if they're micro which suck) or just make it 3G. Who's really sending out to an Atomos from an internal raw camera? You don't need 4K in a a teradek world. I'm sorry you just don't. I'm glad they are keeping the global shutter and locking RF is cool with me.

      Nice. Yeah the “redundancy vs reliability” tightrope is tough to walk, because the third element in that equation is price. How much more expensive is it to make a system fully redundant? Then, the fourth factor is product packaging. Would two full size BNCs even fit in the new Komodo-X? We know the I/O on V Raptor is on the side, but on the Komodo it’s on the bottom, DSMC1 style.
      Definitely no room down there for a second BNC.
      I checked 😂

      @Zakabitz Рік тому +1

      @@ThomsonVisuals I definitely don't want the KX to be more expensive than the first one so 3G makes sense to me. Did they show the back at all? Maybe they move it to the side like the rest of the lineup.

    • @ThomsonVisuals
      @ThomsonVisuals  Рік тому +1

      @@Zakabitz They did not show the back. Switching to 3g SDI would save maybe 10 bucks

    • @Zakabitz
      @Zakabitz Рік тому +1

      @@ThomsonVisuals $10 in the beginning but thousands in hours and supplies for fixing the burnt out batches they've had. I guess I was referring to 1 3G over 2 12G would save money but ya it's probably not enough to sky rocket the price.

    • @ThomsonVisuals
      @ThomsonVisuals  Рік тому

      @@Zakabitz They could do one 12G and one 3G EVF/MON port like VRXL. That would cover a ton of bases without overcomplicating the bill of materials too much. But I still think it's dual 12G SDI ports on the back right vertical
