Try this test again.... but this time a lighter s or even x shaft. Looking at the data, to get more out of you I would put you in a s flex, tip'd and a torque of 3 - 3.5 and a weight between 55 and 60grams. Something that can counter the light weight unreliability feeling is lowering the torque, to make it feel more stout, yet it's still light. When shafts are light, and have high torque, that where the issue is of a unreliability noodle feel in your hands.
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 ... lighter shaft but a low torque , say 2.8 to 3.5 , and must be tipped at least a inch. But in the end, it's about what fits you best. Nnn the driver may wrench a bit that's high torque. Torque, can help with club face square'n, for slow swing players, via aiding in the face closing. Nowwwwww, looking back at your test, and how you have a draw and consistency with the feel, shape and dispersion. You may well be where u at and could just use a pinch less torque to not assist in your closure rate. Do you know your shaft torque, if not look it up.
I appreciate you taking the time and posting your results. For the longest time I have been inconsistent with my driver. I also hit it between 200 and 225 and use a regular shaft. It feels floppy and untrustworthy. I have been improving in all areas except the driving. I think it's time to get a shaft fitting. Thank you again for your info. It was helpful.
No problem, I’m glad it helped and you should definitely try a stiff shaft no matter what your swing speed is. I have always felt more control with a stiff shaft.
I have to say, I couldn't take my eyes off the scenery. As far as the golf swing. Very consistent and I think the stiff shaft gives you more control and confidence. Again though, beautiful background!
Thank you for your time making this, I started playing this year and starting to try and figure this part out a bit more now that I can hit the damn thing, not where I want but better than a 50/50 for a top/thin. I wound up buying a 3h and 4h one with a Regular shaft and one with Stiff by accident (didn't know any better) and after a buddy pointed it out and I started swapping the heads around, bam, R shaft with either head, inconsistent straight pull miss, with the stiff, both heads felt way more workable
Yes, it's a matter of trying out different shafts, unfortunately when you first start, they always try to get you to play regular and as you can see no matter the swing speed, for some players stiff is much better. It also may a huge improvement when I switched my irons to stiff, not too much weight, only 95 grams, but enough to make a difference.
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 I got the stiff shaft in and yeah big change, it's also 4g heavier, just feels way more solid and I can actually tell where the head is going before it gets there now. Sim says 165-170mph ball speed and ~110 head speed
Interesting info. I just dropped my driver off to get a stiff shaft and new grip put on. It currently has a regular shaft, and much like you, I feel as though I have very little control. I am looking forward to trying the stiff shaft. Thanks!
Thanks for commenting. I do agree, it's how you feel and what gives you confidence. In my case even with a 90mph swing speed, despite what experts say, I feel much more control with a stiff shaft.....
Great video! I am basically In the same boat right now. Considering upgrading to Qi10 and have similar head and ball speed. I've been using stiff shaft all my life and recently been considering switch to regular flex. You convinced me to stay with stiff flex. Thank you!
Good video/review. I'm similar to you, and find my best results with stiff ahafts in my woods and regular shafts in my irons. I even have a X-stiff shaft for my driver, and while the carry isn't as long, the roll out is incredible.
Thanks, yes while for the irons it may be better to play with ligher shafts, with the driver, I think a lot of golfers get it wrong, definitely more control and roll with a stiffer shaft
Great video. I think you hit on the nail concerning stiff vs regular. I was in the same boat too between stiff and extra stiff. In the end, slightly stiffer than stiff was the sweet spot. Try this next time, Fujikura makes Ventus with VeloCore driver shafts, and whatever they have is slightly stiffer than normal. Kinda like regular + .25 stiffness. Do not buy their Ventus TR, as it's actually stiff - .25 for lack of better word. Also, with modern LS driver heads, you'll get an extra 7% to 15% depending on where you strike the ball. With Ventus stiff blue 60 and Cobra LTDx LS, I was able to increase my drive distance by 15 to 20 yards! Swing speed is around 103mph for reference.
I’m like you ...I got tired of the “experts” saying I need a regular stiff shaft because of my age ...bull crap I play with stiff shafts on all my clubs and if I didn’t I too would have a left to right ball shape What feels good in the hands is where we start first Comfort...confidence...contact Great video
Exactly, I don't know who came up with that rule, but stiff on my driver works for me, maybe if you want to play a fade you can go regular, but you cannot impose people to use what they think is better for you.
What a great video. I have about the same swing speed and just got a new set of callaway rogue st max irons and woods. I bought the regular irons and stiff woods. After seeing this, I feel confident in my purchase.
I have very slow swing speed but I use a regular shaft. Most people would say I should use a senior A flex shaft. I try these from time to time but I just can’t control the club head. I hardly ever hit a straight shot and almost never hit the centre of the club face. With a regular shaft it’s usually straight and mostly near the centre of the club face. The thing that nobody talks about is shaft profile, which I personally think is more important than shaft flex. I can’t get on with shafts that have a low kick point. They make me miss the sweet spot as the club head flips at the bottom of the swing. Next is shaft weight. I think that may be as important, or more important than shaft flex in my opinion. Far better for me is a regular, mid kick point, medium weight shaft. They don’t go as high as a low kick point and/or light shaft and/or more flexible shaft but I fix that with a higher lofted driver. So get fitted and don’t be afraid to try different flexes, flex profiles and shaft weights is the lesson I’ve learnt over the years. You may not be ‘standard’.
Thank you this is very good information, I do agree with you, weight and the kick point for sure seems more important than the actually flex. I'm on a quest to find the best shaft for my driver, but realized that the driver head is also important so I've decided to switch to callaway drivers instead of taylormade drivers
Great video your standard test is the same as mine left right and centre, just bought a stiff shaft for my sim2 driver. Can’t want to draw it like your stiff tests. Thank you sir
Great video. Thanks for posting, and the scenery is awesome as others have said. I am 72, between a R and senior shaft hitting 10.5 degrees and consistent 198 - 200 yards carry. I guess that's good, not sure.
Good stuff. I just got back into the game this past summer and looking to replace my clubs. Based on this and other vids, there's no difference in distance between regular vs stiff shafts. So I'll stick to stiff for better control.
Very informative video....I just bought a new driver with a regular flex, but also ordered the same shaft with a stiff flex. I'll see which one I'm more comfortable with.
I think it depends on your swing speed, tempo and rythm. For me I think that a stiff shaft it's a bit more constant, better dispersion, let us know what you like better.
If you play a lot of golf, I would recomend getting an aftermarket shaft. In regular, It will feel easy to swing, but be more stable than any factory xstiff. They are expensive, but worth it. Im a huge fan of Fujikura Ventus, try it!
Great demo, dude. Thanks. I forgot how informative your channel was... for us 'mere mortals :) ....just subscribed so I won't miss anything. These down to-earth videos are sooo much needed for the average golfers 👍
Totally agree with your point of view. Reg irons, fine! I need a firm driver shaft because I cant feel where the head is. Thus it becomes unreliable. Thanx
I just switched to a stiff shaft today to see how my driver would perform. I had the same distance however I felt I had more control of the club head and all my drives were in the fairway. Like you I have a lower swing speed and prefer the stiff shaft.
It’s weird, but it does work. I recently changed to regular, but now I’ve increased my swing speed to about 95-100mph so I made have to do another comparison
A great wake up for me, only get my 3 wood 180=190 carry off the t (63) and this fit young man does the same with driver, expectations in order tonight😊
I wasn’t very efficient with the driver, but I managed to changed my grip and increased my swing speed over the years, I got to 225 yards carry with the driver, a bit more 235 if I drive to hit it hard
Nice video ! You looked more confident with the stiff shaft. You had great launch angle numbers and consistency. With the regular you had some nice fades, but they are not nice when you aim and expect draws. I have stiff iron shafts but regular in my woods. Everything comes down to what you feel and like. You have enough speed to play stiff shaft. And it is not only the stiffness in shafts that matter. The stiffness in stiff shaft problaby fits your tempo and gives you better timing. Keep these good videos coming. I like to see videos from average golfers like my self. Take care, and best regards from Norway
SlAAnsky Thank you! Yes exactly stiff gives me better tempo and like you said it’s not good if you play a draw and get a fade, I almost never lose it to the right with a stiff shaft. I should probably try different stiffness when I get fitted.
I agree with your assessment 100%. I have a similar SS and went back and forth for years. Yes the ball will carry further with a regular flex shaft but also higher and my course is usually wet so only a few yards of roll. If I use the stiffer shaft I'm more accurate and actually get some roll, probably 15 yards longer than with the regular flex shaft.
Exactly my point, I'm tempted to go back to regular again, but it's just not worth it, I hit a really low trajectory shot in my last round, that ball just keep rolling to 250 yards.....not going back anytime soon
I am in the exact same boat you are. I agree, stay with the stiff. I will do the same. Your numbers almost mirror mine. I prefer regular in irons and stiff in woods as well. Your swing speed is actually quite normal for an average golfer ⛳️
Thanks, I did increase my swing speed with my driver but just to about 95-98mph max. I feel that with stiff shaft when playing bad, you tend to limit your errors while with regular, it seems like you really start to lose feeling of the club head and start hitting really bad shots, always stiff for me.
Nice to see videos like this, I’m similar to yourself swing about 93 to 95. Fitters often try and encourage me towards regular but they never work for me. I don’t like the feel. I’ve found from trial and error a slightly lighter stiff shaft works best. Between 55 and 60g for driver.
Definitely stiff for me too, tried to switch to regular, but started missing to the right so I went back to stiff again, way better, maybe I should look into the weight as well 🤔
I have 105 ss and I also prefer a light stiff flex shaft( i game an atmos red 55gram stiff ) i do have problems with ballooning sometimes. But my drives are down the middle as long as I do my job. I should probably get a fitting but for now I’m happy
Such a good simple comparison that’s probably really relevant for many golfers like me, who assume reg is the middle of the road and for me. I also prefer reg irons and my bad shot with a driver leaks to the right. I have an 2016 M2 and just checked its only 50g Will 100% try a heavier and stiff shaft. Probably the answer rather than a new driver. Great video
Also consider shaft profile. It can affect your timing. I went from a fuji pro stiff. To a Fuji atmos stiff. And the difference was huge even though they are both stiff flex shafts. But their profile is pretty much opposites. The pro- had a soft butt and stiff mid section and tip. The atmos has a stiff butt with a med/soft mid section and tip.
...my swing speed's in the low 90s too. And I too use stiff 4B2M driver shafts, but after so many suggested generalizations - I should go to a regular shaft. ... Regular feels a bit whippy to me so far as I've known (over 40 yrs) but with today's quick inset hosels, I'm gonna start tweaking regular shafts. 3B2M maybe.
If you play regular and go to stiff your swing speed is going to decrease and vice versa, I’m swinging about 96-99 with a stiff shaft nowadays, but mostly do to technique
I have similar swing speed and several regular shafts normally lead to a fade/slice. My OTT also leads to the odd pull. I've tried senior/lite shafts and the results are terrible. Dispersion galore. Now you have me thinking. I prefer short grass to distance if I had a choice. I may try a stiff shaft and hope to get similar results.
Shafts have improved so much over the years, now you can have stiff middle, butt or tip. You have to try and see if you prefer a stiffer tip or butt or just a stiff middle, more often than not, stiffer shafts give you more control, definitely try it
Hi, thanks for the video, I am right inbetweener regular & stiff with a swing speed of 96 have been playing regular which I hit good good but my bad one is always to the right so might try a stiff shaft & see how I get on. Regards from Scotland"""
I've done this test twice already and I can tell you that with regular shaft I do miss to the right and my draws are harder to control, just try it out... but for me I definitely feel more control with stiff shaft, even if my swing speed is between 90-95, good luck!
I had a similar conclusion. With reg flex I feel like I’m swinging a lot harder than stiff but the ball kind of goes all over the place. With the stiff shaft I feel like I’m swinging slower, but my dispersion improves and I actually gain distance. The slower feel may come down to the fact that my stiff shaft is 6 grams heavier, but either way it’s a lot more suited for me
Unless the two shafts are the exact same model. It can also be the profile of the shaft. I have been struggling for two years with an m2 driver with a pro stiff shaft on it. I have a 3 wood and 4 hybrid with an atmos red shaft on them. And I hit them really well. I figured wth and bought an atmos red driver shaft. They profile of the atmos is essentially the opposite of the pro shaft. And I’m now hitting my drives down the middle. Only problem is I’m getting too much height on my drives. So I’m thinking maybe the atmos blue or black would have been a better option for the lower launch. That Being said it completely changed my drives even though they are both stiff flex shafts. Weight and profile seem to be even more important then flex from what I have been reading
I didn't know this so regular is advisable for less than 80? I have always been suggested regular shaft, anyways, stiff works for me to I'll keep using it unless maybe I can try a different stiffness in the shaft.
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 it looks like taylormade suggests regular flex for 85-95 mph with the driver. However, I was always told anything over 90 should be stiff. Regardless, if you're around the cutoff, you can go either way depending on what works/feels best.
It’s interesting to note the amount of second hand clubs for sale have stiff shafts in them .Maybe a lot would like to think they need a stiff shaft but in truth have a swing better suited to a regular shaft.
This are very efficient numbers with the stiff shaft...certainly suits you. With that efficiency if you were to pick up swing speed you would be launching it out there. Not a lot between them in distance but much tighter dispersion and ‘fairway hits’ with the stiff.
Stick to stiff flex to keep the straight dispersion but for you’re swing speed would deffo put the loft up a bit need to find sweet spot so not getting to much spin but deffo would go higher than 8.5 reckon you’d get abit more distance
both shafts are actually the exact same weight, but the regular shaft feels more flexible, to this day I prefer a stiff shaft, no real benefit to me in a regular shaft, honestly
I prefer the stiff and even the xtrastiff shafts over the regular. I feel like I get much better feel and timing with the stiffer shafts. Looks like u were spraying balls more with the regular then the stiff. I would stick with the stiff especially if your hitting it more consistent and your getting a better feel. That backdrop!!! Jeez! What a view!!! So beautiful out there!
Thanks, yes a lot of people mentioned timing and I think that's why I like stiff better. I wouldn't mind trying other types of shafts to see if there is even something better out there.
After watching the video you are obviously attached and comfortable with the stiff flex. Your timing and muscle memory is very much in line with that tempo. It is odd you arent finding increased distance with a regular shaft. You might want to try something inbetween like a S/R. You are consistent though.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Your launch monitor numbers and ball flight indicate that the stiff shaft gives you a reliable outcomes. I have a mix of stiff and regular shafted clubs.; mainly regular though. I do have a 4 wood with a seniors flex and I hit that really well. I guess the stiffness rating is only one aspect of the shaft performance; that is tip/ butt stiffness. kick point etc all have an effect on ball flight.
That's interesting, I don't really know much about all aspects of the shaft, but I want to learn about it, a little change here and there would definitely help, I think.
@@kymstock1852 Thanks for this, just what I was looking for. It really makes me want to try different types of shafts, considering kick point as well. I mean, if you notice with the stiff shaft, I never lost a ball to the right (no fades) and with the exact same swing, I lost 2 balls to the right with the regular shaft!!! maybe there is another shaft out there that is even more comfortable for me and who knows, I could even hit it further.....
Yes, it was either a draw or a little big of a hook, but I felt that I had some control over it whereas with the regular shaft, even though I was swinging the same, I was losing some shots to the right, much less control
Your ability to hit a 1.38 smash factor so consistently is impressive lol. Switch your setup either tee height or stepping close or farther away at address. You could add a lot of distance if you get that smash factor to 1.48 and considering you're consistently hitting 1.38 I feel like it's not your swing it's your address / tee height.
You are absolutely right, I switch to 10.5 degrees and I managed to hit it up to 230 yards carry. I had the settings too low at 8.5 degrees. My swing speed varies now from 90 up to 97mph so a little more than in this video.
Interesting. You have very similar driver numbers to me. I have a regular shaft at present. Had a stiff shafted driver but found it hard work. Struggling with accuracy especially with standard length regular shafts. The video seems to suggest that stiff is right for you. Maybe I need to try stiff / firm shafts. Thanks for the information.
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 lower the loft?.😂👍I was recommended to increase the loft to increase launch angle from sub 10 degree to 13/14 degree for more carry and overall distance. It works but if I go wild, its really wild.
@@voice_of_reason5604 I will be putting out a video of me experimenting with this, but obviously it depends on your type of swing, it’s incredible, yes I lose distance by lowering the loft, but the dispersion it’s so much tighter that it might be worth it for me 🤷🏻♂️ it takes that one drive to go out of bounds to ruin a round..
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 So did you change your swing? I mean there are other issues that come into play when you change the loft on new clubs (lie angle comes to me). What did you get attached to angle too?
And also, with graphite golf shafts, there is no real standard meaning one stiff shaft could be a regular in another shaft type. A regular could even be close to a senior shaft. A lot of stock shafts can be on the softer end of stiff so it could be right between regular and stiff. Shafts can certainly be a lot different, especially in graphite. Weight, kick point, tip stiffness, but stiffness. Profiles are numerous. Use what works for your swing and temp no matter what the letter on the shat. 👍🏼😁
yes exactly, I would love to get a proper fitting with a shaft, try different kick points etc, that would be be ideal, but it does cost a lot of money to get fitted here, plus you have to buy the driver that you try.....
I've always used stiff shafts. I'm getting older and my swing speed is mid-upper 80's. I don't think my ball flight is very high, I average about 215, and I'm usually very straight. (I'm sure much of the problem is my swing, I know it could use a lot of tweaking.) Lately I've been considering getting a regular shaft for my driver to do this same experiment. I'am worried that I my shots won't be as straight. I guess there's a chance for more height and distance, but do I really want to sacrifice my straight shot? Another option is to simply just take some lessons on how to properly hit my driver. lol Excellent video!
@@13vansman I experimented with various shafts and club heads. I’ve been playing taylormade for the longest time, but only now I realized that for my swing I get a lot more distance with a callaway driver, I’ve heard that callaway drives are better for slower swing speeds and I think it’s true. I’m still searching for the perfect combination, good luck sir
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 I had fittings with Callaway, TM, Ping, Srixon, and Cleveland. TM was the only one that suggested a regular flex, the rest were Stiff. I got along best with the Ping G425. I loved the looks and the sound (that everyone hates, lol) I think I’ve had it for just over 2 years now. I didn’t golf much from 2005-2021, so my old driver was my trusty Big Bertha Warbird that I bought new around 1995. I picked the game back up in 2021. My buddies cracked jokes every time I pulled out my driver. It’s so much smaller than today’s drivers. I eventually went to many fitting sessions on the hunt for my next set of clubs that will hopefully last me 10+ years. It is difficult to not want to keep up with the Joneses though.
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 I too game the Apex irons. I have the Apex 19. I got them from Callaway preowned a few years back. My main wedges are the Callaway Mack Daddy CB's. I have some other wedges, but the thicker CB's work better for me on most of the courses I play.
interesting. But I think that for people who hit the ball well and square and have a smooth swing, a stiff shaft will not penalise such players; but if you're not that precise, perhaps a regular or even senior or ladies shaft will give you a tick more clubhead speed at impact?
See, I think that even seniors who play senior shafts may actually be better off with a stiff shaft, I think is a matter of trying and seeing what's best for you. In my case, even though they suggested me to use regular shaft, I feel much more control with a stiff shaft.
True, I did go back to regular flex for 10 months though, then I switched again to stiff, there is definitely more control, but the down side is that it’s easier to hook it with a stiff shaft
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 Really? Because I have always heard and experienced with my irons that with the more flex the more torque occurs, which causes the club face to close, especially on mishits.
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 If memory recalls if you put on high loft the face will close a bit. If you got the adjust weight system put the weight towards your hosel to enhance the club face to close faster. Good luck!!!
@@syoung3602 Yes I did put the weight towards the hosel and it made a huge difference, I will play around with the lofts and weights more until I find the best grouping, thanks
Doesn’t matter what shaft you use. It’s been studied in depth & they are all exactly the same numbers. Plus how fast you swing doesn’t solely determine what shaft you have. You have a very shallow swing path so I would fit you with stiff shaft. Because of the lag in the regular promotes a draw bias, something you don’t want as your miss tends to be left.
The Backyard Golfer yeah I wouldn’t listen to people who state you need regular because of your swing speed or ability etc. I know cat 1 golfers that use regular flex because they like the felling of a light shaft. Some will also say only players of a certain handicap or ability should or can use blades. Blades in my opinion are ideal for beginners so they can learn how to strike an iron properly. You get feedback from blades where the ball has hit the golf ball. Vv
@@theamaturegolfer7798 That's a great idea, actually, blades for beginners. Image when they start hitting better and then switch to game improvement clubs!!! they would like love it!!!
90-95mph is a difficult area to fit. Each person in this area will get a slightly different fit, regular with a stiff tip, stiff with a shaft that kicks more etc etc. I think you have the right shaft. If you tried to hit the regular hard you would be losing golf balls.
A few people here talked about the kick point which I had no idea what it was. I will look further and at this point there is probably the perfect shaft for each golfer, is just a matter of finding it.
At your swing speed, the stiff shaft will produce lower spin and launch. The regular will allow you to feel the club head more in the down swing. In the end play what you are happy with. I suggest you try a 3 wood regular shaft in the driver.
I ended up changing to a regular shaft 2 months ago, even though I did increase my swing speed to about 97 mph with the driver, I feel that I get better feel with the regular shaft now, but at the time of the video with a swing speed of about 85 for some reason I felt more control with the stiff shaft!
This is the thing a pro would never fit you for stiff cause of the swing speed. I've just changed too stiff for winter cause I want low help with ball not plugging and wind control

It's quite annoying for me atm, but quite a nice problem to have. I went to get fitted yesterday for a new driver, and my club head speed was Consistently 115mph + (I got to 123 last week on a trakman too), and the guy was like, you need a x-stiff shafts.. The one on my current driver is regular, and I constantly push it high and right, it balloons. I can catch it but have to work really hard to make Minor adjustments on the way down to square things up, but it's very hard to do consistently... They don't have any x stiff shafts as the demand is so low and the only option I had is to blindly order one, without having tested a it on a said clubhead, and no option to return as its custom... So don't know what to do! His idea was to wait for a demo day, but apparantly they don't come around often. Do you have any ideas?
I have a friend who had the same issue, he has a very high club head speed and cannot find x-stiff shafts, unfortunately the same was for him, he eventually ordered a shaft and managed to play better with it, but without doing a proper fitting. I would suggest asking around for people who play x-stiff and maybe try their equipment. I can barely hit my driver 100mph so I can't image swinging at 115+!!!!
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 yes, it's a nice thing to have in the arsenal, but frustrating not to find the right equipment because I know I could hit it way further and straighter more consistently. Its all well and good being able to swing 115+,but with current situation it leads to lots of dripped shots due to lost balls 😅😅😅Thanks for your advice. I might just do that, but have enquired about a mizuno fitting and if they have the some x stiff options 👍
Yes definitely shaft weight is huge, I just finished making a video on it where I compare a 90 vs 95 gram regular shaft and there is a 2 mph swing speed increase, I’ll put it out tomorrow
Stiff shaft shots don't get up too high, not much air time. Seems like the R shaft would give more of that..or play 9.5 loft instead of 8.5..I think anyway. Will watch to end to see results.
So I tested stiff vs. regular on my driver and again, I find that stiff is still better for my swing, even if my club speed on average is about 90 mph

E Rob Thanks, yes the scenery is nice. It’s strange how having the right shaft can make a huge difference in being more consistent!
It's really distracting 😁
@@ericmullen14 that’s a lot of ball speed, great results!! It’s better to always try both shafts
Interesting info. I just dropped my driver off to get a stiff shaft and new grip put on. It currently has a regular shaft, and much like you, I feel as though I have very little control. I am looking forward to trying the stiff shaft. Thanks!
Definitely more control with the stiff for me, I think you’ll like it 👍
Thank you. Love the honest review. I agree it's a personal feeling. Swing is all about timing and very individual.
Thank you!
Thanks, yes I think there’s definitely more control with a stiff shaft, you should also try an after market shaft, even better!
if you are getting the qi10 you should get fitted and see which performs better for you
not much difference in distance so it makes sense to play with the one that feels better for you, thanks for the video
So true, even with a lower swing speed, I felt that the stiff shaft gave me more control
I’m like you ...I got tired of the “experts” saying I need a regular stiff shaft because of my age ...bull crap
I play with stiff shafts on all my clubs and if I didn’t I too would have a left to right ball shape
What feels good in the hands is where we start first
Comfort...confidence...contact
Great video
Exactly, I don't know who came up with that rule, but stiff on my driver works for me, maybe if you want to play a fade you can go regular, but you cannot impose people to use what they think is better for you.
What a great video. I have about the same swing speed and just got a new set of callaway rogue st max irons and woods. I bought the regular irons and stiff woods. After seeing this, I feel confident in my purchase.
Thanks, I think you’ll feel more control with those woods with a stiff shaft
Thanks, with a stiffer shaft you should be able to swing faster without being scare of missing it to the right, good luck 👍
Great video. Thanks for posting, and the scenery is awesome as others have said. I am 72, between a R and senior shaft hitting 10.5 degrees and consistent 198 - 200 yards carry. I guess that's good, not sure.
@@cvee2614 that’s very inspiring, very good, you must have good form
Good stuff. I just got back into the game this past summer and looking to replace my clubs. Based on this and other vids, there's no difference in distance between regular vs stiff shafts. So I'll stick to stiff for better control.
Yes for sure stick to stiff, I feel that stiff gives me more control and not real gains in distance with regular, good luck!
@@bomb_and_gouge I bought one it’s a speeder shaft stiff but it’s a bit heavy for me now, it’s 66 grams. I will try a lighter stiff shaft
Very honest and great review my man. I really needed this information. Thank you
No problem, thank you for watching.
Great demo, dude. Thanks. I forgot how informative your channel was... for us 'mere mortals :)
....just subscribed so I won't miss anything. These down to-earth videos are sooo much needed for the average golfers 👍
Thank you very much
Totally agree with your point of view. Reg irons, fine! I need a firm driver shaft because I cant feel where the head is. Thus it becomes unreliable. Thanx
Exactly how I feel 👍
I changed drivers. Moved to a stiff shaft. Still roughly around a 200 carry at the range, but more control. Good video.
Thanks, I just now switched back to regular and hitting really well, but I’m working a lot on my driver
Great video
Thanks, I think it depends on the player, but it always best to try it, not just assume what people say 👍
And I too use stiff 4B2M driver shafts, but
after so many suggested generalizations - I should go to a regular shaft.
Try a Firm flex
I had a similar conclusion. With reg flex I feel like I’m swinging a lot harder than stiff but the ball kind of goes all over the place. With the stiff shaft I feel like I’m swinging slower, but my dispersion improves and I actually gain distance. The slower feel may come down to the fact that my stiff shaft is 6 grams heavier, but either way it’s a lot more suited for me
I feel the same, I start slicing with regular 🤷🏻♂️
Best explained difference between the two shafts
thank you
Cut off for club head speed from reg to stiff is 90. So you could do whichever you prefer as, from a speed perspective, you could do either.
Congratulations on the video. I would like to know what equipment you use to measure the ball distance.
Thank you, at the time it was the little Flightcope mevo, I’ve recently made another video using the mevo plus unit 👍
What a view. Beautiful place to golf
Thanks, unfortunately it's only a driving range, but they're planning on making a 9-hole course.
You should try shaft weight it makes a huge difference you might get better distance with your swing speeds with a heavy regular flex shaft.

It’s interesting to note the amount of second hand clubs for sale have stiff shafts in them .Maybe a lot would like to think they need a stiff shaft but in truth have a swing better suited to a regular shaft.
It’s always better to get fitted, but I see your point and that’s so true I found so many second hand stiff shaft driver online
Nice video. I was always told if you had a fast swing speed you should be hitting a stiff shaft…slower swing speed a regular flex.
I think regardless of your speed with a stiff shaft you will have more control, you would have to just try
Where are you located the scenery is killer
Northern Italy, lake Garda, thanks
This are very efficient numbers with the stiff shaft...certainly suits you. With that efficiency if you were to pick up swing speed you would be launching it out there. Not a lot between them in distance but much tighter dispersion and ‘fairway hits’ with the stiff.
Yes even after 8 months, I still prefer stiff, I would need to do a test with real balls....
Stick to stiff flex to keep the straight dispersion but for you’re swing speed would deffo put the loft up a bit need to find sweet spot so not getting to much spin but deffo would go higher than 8.5 reckon you’d get abit more distance
Thanks, I did increase my swing speed to 95mph and I still use stiff, I did raise the loft to 10.5, much better!

The rhythm in your swing is perhaps more important than swing speed in selecting shaft flex
Thanks, yes I learnt that over the years, in fact for me I get the feeling of pausing at the top to get better momentum
Very good, that is my swing speed and I am conflicted about the same issue.
@@yossarianmnichols9641 try both flexes , I feel that there is more control with a stiff shaft
Is the regular shaft lighter in weight
both shafts are actually the exact same weight, but the regular shaft feels more flexible, to this day I prefer a stiff shaft, no real benefit to me in a regular shaft, honestly
I have stuff shaft in driver to hybrid then regular in the irons, works for me.
Same here, I used stiff in my irons in the past, but changed to regular lately and much better, but not with the driver.
My swing speed is right in between. I ended up going with stiff. In the end I don’t feel there’s much difference, just good marketing.
I would think your speed would be a little higher, but you definitely have better release, that's something I need to work on...
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 I would love to try a carbon fiber shaft. It may be too light thou.
@@ChiliDippaGolf Some here are talking about different types of kick point on the shaft, may have to look into that....
After watching the video you are obviously attached and comfortable with the stiff flex. Your timing and muscle memory is very much in line with that tempo. It is odd you arent finding increased distance with a regular shaft. You might want to try something inbetween like a S/R. You are consistent though.
@@pengu4932 yes I think the stiff gave me more confidence, it’s strange

Did you find that you had better dispersion with the stiff shaft?
Yes, it was either a draw or a little big of a hook, but I felt that I had some control over it whereas with the regular shaft, even though I was swinging the same, I was losing some shots to the right, much less control
Study the Mike Austin swing to fill in the blanks and get you some distance. Your swing is already close i think.
Thank you, I’ll look it up 👍
Your ability to hit a 1.38 smash factor so consistently is impressive lol. Switch your setup either tee height or stepping close or farther away at address. You could add a lot of distance if you get that smash factor to 1.48 and considering you're consistently hitting 1.38 I feel like it's not your swing it's your address / tee height.
Thanks, I did change many things over the years and yes changing my setup definitely helped
You are so right! It comes down to what feels better to you....better feel become better confidence and improved commitment to the shot.

Use what works for your swing and temp no

@@13vansman I experimented with various shafts and club heads. interesting.

Stiff is better, I just realized after 1 year of regular shaft I was hindering my game. Got fitted for stiff shaft huge improvements.
I went back to regular recently, but I’ve just increased my swing speed so I’ll see about going back to stiff, my swing speed is now about 97-102 mph
Never thought of it this way, but I know for a fact that I hit stiff better for some reason, it could also be mental.....
The Backyard Golfer absolutely. If you’re playing in a tournament, leading up to it practice with blades. 👌
What planet is this guy on? Scenery is awesome!
Thanks, this is in norther Italy, near Lake Garda
wow where is that? Nice view so serene
Thanks, is in the north of Italy, near lake Garda.
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 Nice! I would like to visit it one day, the most I've been up north Italy is at Florence. Wish you the best
Jesus, where the he'll are you golfing? That place is gorgeous.

that doesn’t look like the bronx new york 😂

I never had success with a regular shaft, way less control, I would highly recommded stiff shaft to any golfer, regarless of their speed
Is ths Kauai?
Not, it's in norther Italy, a place called Rovereto, near lake Garda

I wish!
Great vid.. I find myself asking the same question.... reg or stiff... My swing speed is mid 90s... Looking for a stiff now... have been using reg for years..
Thanks, I got rid of all my fades and slices when I switched to stiff, never went back to regular ever since...Good luck!
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 .. Well I ordered the Taylormade Aeroburner from 2nd swing.. 9.5 with a stiff flex... Most of my drives average 250... and once in a while 260 with my longest ever being 270.... Went to the driving range today.. Average was 260-270 with the longest being 286... WHAT A CHANGE!!! Thanks for the video!!
@@bluelinearcheology2427 That's a huge difference, you were playing the wrong shaft, that's great news!!! Take it out to the course and it will be a big advantage to hit that far.
@@bertracer9596 good luck, my friend was in the same situation, make sure to look at the kickpoint of the shaft, that was a big issue for my friend
I use extra stuff on all my shafts. Have too.
I use regular on my irons and stiff on my driver, I never got fitted though. What's your swing speed? it seems about 100mph from your videos, or more!
Thanks for the useful info. I think shaft weight also the big factor.
I may be more the way I swing, not sure
