As a lifelong parts guy thanks for the respect you gave your guys! We are usually the ones who get all the crap from everyone and its nice to see someone who understands what actually goes into being a good parts person.
I’m over in Ohio, decided I might make a career change to a dealership as a salesman. I really enjoy talking about tractors and hobby farming is a hobby of mine. BUT am concerned about what a tractor salesman makes. The company I will interview for I think is a little optimistic in advertising on what sales people make.
Great video! I started as car wash guy at a car dealership, then shuttle driver, appointment taker, service consultant. Now Service Manager at a heavy & agriculture equipment dealership. I see a lot of potential on this industry.
The 10th generation dairyman said to watch your videos. I particularly like this video. You make it sound like the dream job for a lot of people that would never think of working for you. There is a you tube channel that has 498 thousand subscribers. She gives a lot to her viewers. She has yarn giveaways. Check out her channel. “bag-o-day crochet & more” If you have giveaways once in awhile people like free stuff like hats and whatever. Maybe a free oil filter. You would be able to get more viewers. She uses the you tube Random picker to pick the prize. I really hope you get more people to watch your videos good luck.
How are the technicians paid in a shop like this? Are they flat rate like an auto shop, or hourly/salary? I can't imagine, with the amount of weird shit (custom fab, bent stuff, digging bolts out of caked mud, etc), flat rate would work out very well.
Small lawn and garden shops flat rate.. we don't, for the reason you mention. We do track billing efficiently, and that the hours put in can be justified to our customers.
Was that an old Chevette? Who the heck is still driving one of those? Trade jobs is where it's going to be at. the 20 somethings now couldn't work a pipe wrench.
The reason more young people aren't interested in being a mechanic or technician...? As a Diesel mechanic of about 15 years right out of high school. Far MORE of the places I've worked have been horrible in both pay and environment. Whether that be in terms of shop or management. And the tools you pay 10s of thousands of dollars for. Go missing all the time. And management never wants to take responsibility for it because as I mentioned they can be extremely expensive. But if you start asking people where your $600+ Snapon torque wrench is. All of a sudden it's ME that's out of line? Currently I am the sole mechanic at a small landscape company and have been for 2 years. The pay is about 10 percent less than if I worked in either a dealer or a good general service shop. But I'm able to work at my own pace, come and go as I please, start work whenever I want and take lunch whenever I want for however long I want. As long as everything gets fixed the right way. They don't care how or when it gets fixed. And I think that's something that most younger people see and don't really understand. Especially as a mechanic or jobs similar to that. Why, if you have all the tools, do you have to be there at 8am on the nuts, take your lunch at exactly noon and can't punch out until exactly 4:30pm. Just look at how "Tele-commuting" (working from home) has EXPLODED in the past 5-10 years. It's because you have a much more accommodating schedule in that setup. My wife works from home and it's nice that she's there all day to feed the dogs and let them out. As well as maybe get a load of laundry done or start dinner. Even though since I'm usually home no later than 4pm. I make dinner. Now I realize I'm coming off pretty "entitled" right now so let me say I choose to start work at 5am everyday. Sometimes I'm here later than 5am sometimes I'm here before then. But I Primarily start at 5 so I can be home by 4pm. I work 10 hour days, again by choice. This way I have enough daylight to get some things done around the house. I've never been able to have this schedule at a service shop or dealer. And since I work 10 hour days if I don't want to work Friday. I don't have to.
I'd also come to work for you in a heartbeat if the money was right. 25 years of equipment work, now lead mechanic and service manager for an equipment dealer. I know the work would be no problem. Tech is no big deal - everything runs on CAN now anyway. I work best when it's just me and the machine. I hate management / people issues / babysitting grown men. Put me in a service truck and direct me to the broken stuff!
Great Video... You are correct when you say that kids today are not looking in places where they can make good money. Too bad your in the middle of nowhere lol. Open up a Messicks in NY and I'll manage the place for you... #manager #sales #mechanic #etc... LOL
Mechanical Engineer here in Louisiana with a fascination of equipment and pondering a career change. Too bad y'all are way too far north for my liking, lol.
Was that a gold Chevy Citation???? WOW! Great video as usual. I work for a large Electical contractor in Indy and we are having the same issue finding younger help. I'm getting close to retirement and afraid what is going to happen to the industry. BTW. I have realized over time that it's not the young people that is to blame, but it's the parents that raised them to be that way.
Bob Smithereens Ha! It’s waay too far away for me anyway! But sure looks like a good opportunity for someone. I know that it’s a ‘family run’ business, that’s a ‘plus’ in my opinion. I consider these types of businesses superior to the giant corporations.
I must be a geek. Couldn't help but notice the deployment of Avaya PoE VoIP phones.
I worked for an Avaya shop before joining the equipment dealership.

If you add a branch out around Pittsburgh you could make a killing. I'd work for you.
In India

Good video 👍. Interesting information. Good luck with the young people of today. Many of them are overly emotional , entitled and lazy
