  • My review of the Tavor 7 from IWI. This particular one features a 20" barrel in 7.62x51. I go over some specs, my thoughts and opinions, some zeroing, and a little shooting at the end. Let me know if you have any questions, or feel like I may have forgotten to add something.

    I have the Tavor7 with a 16.5 barrel. I only use 7.62x51 ammo at 150gr. With the twist rate of the barrel is likes lighter bullets. I zeroed mine at 25 yrds, and out to 275m I hit within 5 1/4 inches of aim point. That is right where a Battle Rifle designed for war should be. I am happy with that.

    To answer your question of why you would turn the rifles gas system to "OFF": Shooting subsonic suppressed. It won't cycle the action and makes for a quieter shot and reduces the possibility of jamming the action with a short stroke. Kind of brilliant honestly. It basically temporarily turns it into a bolt action. Doesn't really make sense for most civilians but it was after-all made as a battle rifle and who knows when they'd have the tactical necessity to be discrete without having an alternate weapon system.

      Makes perfect sense to me. Only ever had that issue with subsonic .22, so east to forget or not think of something that simple.

    I have shot over 800 rounds in a day with the 7 and walked away unbruised. I can't say that for other 308 rifles that I have taken classes with.
    As to the weight, the 7 is on par with just about every 308 battle rifle out there. They are all tipping the scales from 9 to 11 lbs. These are not 556 rifles.
    I have a 7 in both 20 & 16" barrels. With 7.62 NATO 147 grain ammo I get at 100 meters 1/2" groups.
    This is my SHTF rifle. Accurate, reliable, compact. It is the 7.62 rifle to go to as far as I'm concerned.

    When my late wife bought her T7 at PSA, she asked which ammo works well in it. They sent her home with WWB M80 147g 7.62, and Fiocchi 150g .308. Seemed perfect for the barrel twist. With a cheap red dot, it always makes 1 inch or less groups at 50 yards. We stuck with the Winchester White Box M80 for targets after that, with some of the Fiocchi for hunting, without needing to adjust the optic.

      @@spectre6682 Thank you. My condolences to you also.
      That T7 was our first and only rifle caliber long gun, so we were glad for the suggestions from the staff at PSA. In retrospect, I guess it makes sense that a 7.62 "battle rifle" would be spec'ed for NATO standard M80 Ball ammo.
      Any, with nothing to compare it with, the T7 had been all she wanted it to be, easily hitting her targets and bringing a smile to her face.

    I would love to see a follow up review on this - even just a table talk.
    I own a T7 myself. Absolutely love the ergo, the look, the feel. Excellent recoil impulse for a 308. I was in love with this gun.
    Then I shot it in a match (run and gun style).
    1. I can’t get it to shoot less than 6 inch groups at 50 yards from a bench with any ammo. And yes, I am experienced with precision shooting.
    2. During the one match I used this in, I shot approximately 150 rounds. Had an absolute blast … till I got a light primer strike on factory ammo. My confusion destroyed my match time, to boot!
    3. Put it away a few days after the match. When I took it back out again, the right hand mag eject looked off. I pressed it, and it literally just fell off into the body of the gun.
    This has gone from my favorite gun to my most frustrating gun in 150 rounds. I would LOVE to hear if you experience any of this, or if you have suggestions.
    Also to note: I called IWI. They suggested I can try to fix it myself, but they will also fix it under the 5 year warranty if I want them to. I was hoping they would comment about the regularity of having the mag eject button literally fall off, but they did not.
    My ability to trust this firearm is DRASTICALLY diminished. I’m going to fix it up and give it one more try. But this has been a massive time and money sink so far.
    Tips/thoughts appreciated!

      That accuracy alone would have made me think it's a lemon.
      Mine shoots just over an inch with it's favorite ammo, and about 3 with cheap ball. And that's at 100..
      How many rounds did you have on it before the run & gun?

    • @Adam4137
      @Adam4137 9 місяців тому

      Hey there Fred! Thanks for the insight!
      Very few - less than 50. I tried a little of each. Half of that is the cheap stuff. I tried. A few rounds each of a few different options. 175g match ammo, reloads, 150g, etc. The cheap 147g shoots the best, but even that is 4 inches at 50. The match grade stuff gave me the 6 inch string. I never even got to push to 100.
      I will say, 99% of the variability is vertical. It patterns almost a straight line up and down. Thought this was bizarre , but I have seen other accuracy tests and noticed other Tavors also pattern this way

      So I haven't had it long enough to give any sort of long term use review, but would be glad to do so in the future. In response to the things you listed:
      1. Check the optic/mount to make sure it's tight. The gun is definitely capable of much better than that. Have someone else that is experienced take a look at it and shoot it as well, I have had that help me solve issues with a second set of eyes or knowledge. Did you disassemble it, to include removing the barrel prior to this? Its possible something isn't lined up properly on reassembly.
      2. If it was just one round you had an issue with, maybe an ammo issue, as in that one round? If everything else is firing fine before and after that, then I wouldn't blame the gun entirely. Check, clean, and lube the bolt carrier assembly and make sure that nothing is damaged or worn that might lead to that issue if it persists with other rounds.
      3. I have never heard of that issue, nor seen anyone else complain about it during my research before buying it. I would certainly take IWI up on their offer to look at it while under warranty to look at, diagnose, and fix any of the issues you are facing. Perhaps there is something wrong with it, and something slipped through QC. If that is the case they will fix it and make it right.
      I am sorry to hear, and that really sucks that you are having issues with it. Definitely not a cheap investment, and I hate that you are having to go through all of the frustration with it.

    • @Adam4137
      @Adam4137 9 місяців тому

      Hey there Spectre! Thank you for the reply, and your excellent videos!
      1. Yes sir, optic was an Eotech mounted solid. I also had my father with me at all accuracy testing. He was a high level competition precision shooter back in the day! Sadly, everyone I know (and especially him) think I’m foolish for buying such a different and expensive gun. So I don’t have anyone with more experience with the weapon platform to lean on. I disassembled everything but the barrel. It is possible I didn’t set it back up perfectly.
      2. I did think about that as well! The only reason I suspected the gun at all is the fact that I’ve seen from numerous reviewers that they DO NOT shoot steel case in most cases, because the primers are too hard. I was already hyper aware of looking out for light primer strikes because of that. I have completely cleaned and heavily lubed the BCG with the help of videos like yours! I had actually fully cleaned and greased it up just before that match with my infamous (possible) light primer strike.
      3. I have found one other person with an x95 and one comment on a T7 where the Mag Eject button fell into the body of the rifle. But it took a LOT of googling! Upon my second disassembly, it appears that there is a pin missing in the right hand mag eject. This had to have fallen out during the match, because it worked perfectly fine before and the pin seems to be required to even hold it in place.
      You are quite right. I’m hoping they will give this thing a good once over and put to back together RIGHT! I’m going to be sure to test it immediately upon return, without opening so much as the BCG so I can be absolutely sure I’m not the issue.
      Thank you again !

    • @Adam4137
      @Adam4137 8 місяців тому +2

      An update for those interested!
      Regarding the Mag Eject: IWI support teams have informed me that they have seen a surprising number of people with this same issue using the Manticore Arms Hammerhead fore end. It does not capture the pins like the OEM hand guard and they walk out. IWI currently has my Tavor and they are replacing those items via the warranty. Kudos to them!
      I reached out to Manticore Arms and they are also aware of the problem. They recommend using glue to fasten the pen when you use their Hammerhead.
      Regarding accuracy: using incredibly expensive match grade rounds, and a 22x Nightforce, I was able to get those groups to almost 2 MOA. But this made me realize something important. A firearm that is barely 2 MOA with the absolute most expensive ammo may as well not be called 2 MOA, because that is not the ammo I’m going to have on hand to use 99% of the time. In comparison on the same range trip, I pulled out my 500$ self build 14.5in AR15, used the cheapest steel cased ammo I have ever bought, and a 6x Strike Eagle. It shot about 1.7in groups. That comparison was quite valuable for me to consider.

      @@spectre6682 I haven't shot .308, but I doubt I should be looking forward to the experience. Ammo cost is around ~.85 cents for ball ammo; I'm thinking I should just stick with 5.56 & ignore this otherwise really cool looking bullpup (as all my rifles are bullpups).

    • @spectre6682
      @spectre6682  2 місяці тому +1

      It’s not terrible to shoot. .308 is a good round, but it is also heavier, you get less capacity, and as you mentioned, it costs more. If it doesn’t fit into your budget or needs, may be best to just stock up on more 5.56, mags, or take a few classes for what you might spend on a new gun you don’t see yourself “needing” 🤷🏻‍♂️
