Got you out of your chair!!! That was my reaction when I first heard it in 77. My 14-year-old mind was blown, and it's my favorite Rush song to this day.
Originally discovered in 1964, Cygnus-X1 was theorized to be the first black hole discovery in 1971. Neil (of course) read about this inspiring the song(s).
Back in the 80s, while I was visiting in the Colorado mtns, an older teenager said I needed to hear Xanadu. Luckily, my sis had the tape. So, I listened on a walkman in a hammock around sunset, and when this song came on it had gotten dark and chilly. Sooo spooky but truly unforgettable.

Greetings, Red from San Diego's resident Rushoholic. I've never been sure, but I believe that's Neil's processed voice narrating the opening to his lyrics. He took the name of Don Quixote's horse Roscinante (spelling?) for the name of the spaceship. There wasn't anything processed about his drum kit. It was all acoustic in '77. A FAREWELL TO KINGS and HEMISPHERES from 1978 are two of the four "gatefold" vinyl album sleeves containing one disc where two disc's could've fit. The fold had extra band photos and lyrics printed on it. Also, at the end of "The Voyage" lyrics is printed "To be continued". The continuation was "Hemispheres" which we older fans had to wait on over a year since Rush had to support A FAREWELL TO KINGS with a 140 show tour filling out 1977 and carrying into 1978. Your jumping from your chair is a normal reaction especially for how Geddy tested the upper limits of his 20-something vocal range in the last two stanzas of the lyrics. The effects on this are initial reverb on orchestra bells and bass which are steadily dialed down. It suggests the infiniteness of outer space. The bells come a little later without damping or reverb. Just before the bells return briefly is a guitar overdub to resume from a break in studio recording and to signal the start of the pull of the black hole in the story. There's no layering I could find, but there's more reverb at the end where the sound of Alex's fingertips scraping around the fretboard are intentionally left in. Those chords in the fadeout tend to match the last note from a given chord arpeggio to the first note of the next chord arpeggio. This forms a sort of musical "pivot" to explore not just musical possibilities, but possibilities on the other side of the "astral door ". Geddy's vocals were dubbed over the finished music, of course. Red, you stay classy...
Hola Stephen - If I remember correctly - and I may not - I think the opening narration was done by Terry Brown, not Neil. Typically, "I read it somewhere" but heck if I remember where. LOL
@@Alex-d9e3i Hallo Alex from Stephen. You might be right about the Prolouge to "The Voyage". I never was sure and the same may or may not be true for "The Necromancer".

This is such great musical storytelling. As the Rocinante moves through the quiet solitude of space, the music is peaceful and regular, with occasional, violent interruptions hinting at the chaos that awaits as the ship descends past the "event horizon" and into the tumultouos gravitational vortex of Cygnus X-1 (where Neil Peart seemingly answers the question as to whether it is a portal or not). The destruction and consumption of the Rocinante and its crew is then followed by Alex Lifeson's ethereal chords . . . as if they vanished without a trace . . . leaving us to observe the deceptive quiet and darkness of space. It is this evocative composition that makes Rush the greatest band of my lifetime.
As a kid I bought the record because I liked Closer To The Heart which was the only song short enough to get radio play, needless to say I was pleasantly surprised with the rest of the album. 😊
Terry Brown was known for his layering if thats what you could call it, I d prefer it likened to Painting with sounds and artist .But yes layering. This slowly went away with the live sounds that the band cultured it to mixes , I prefer this era of RUSH it more to the core of RUSH.
"Part 3" The climactic section of Book I uses a chord sequence first heard at 3:21 in the Prologue. The lyrics describe the "Rocinante" spinning out of control, and the protagonist's body being destroyed ("every nerve is torn apart"). This section includes the highest note sung by Geddy Lee on any studio album (Bb5 at 9:27).
You're right, the guitars are layered, in that Alex is playing his chords on two different takes, one panned more to the left and the other to the right. It not only makes the sound "fatter", but it also introduces slight variations that allow him to make the chords slightly more "expensive" sounding. Common technique, really, at least back in those days. Modern technology allows you to cheat on this technique, but it never seems to have that same sound, that you're hearing a musician essentially play against themselves to create something FAR more organic. A great example of this technique in vocals can be found with Freddie Mercury, Todd Rundgren or even someone as warbly-sounding as Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction). Your ears are working well! ☮

Like so many other Rush songs, the two "Cygnuses" are just f...in epic in any way. Be it the mix, the composition, the lyeics, the drumming, the guitar and bass playing. They are truely the godfathers of prog. Greets from Germany and the 2nd part will blow you away too (for sure!)
Cygnus X-1, was discovered in 1964, but was not confirmed to be a black hole until 1990. The star Cygnus is a huge blue giant star circling the black hole (X1). The gravity of the black hole is sucking a stream of gassious matter off the star which spirals into the hole like a gigantic hurricane. There are pictures on the web.

What I wonder is did the guys know where they were going with the story when they made Cygnus X-1, or did they figure it out when they started making Hemispheres?
Love this so much, the last song on my favourite album, I'm actually wearing the t-shirt tonight too lol. I still have only 3/63 Rush reactions blocked on your channel. I wish I knew which ones they were. This was fun
Hey RHN, looking good in that skirt! That part you heard where the guitar solo ends and the next part takes over represents the narrator being pulled into the black hole; it starts with the sensation of drifting and floating, and then gradually becomes faster and more chaotic as he continues his downward spiral, punctuated by Geddy's high note on the word "unending" as he crosses the event horizon AKA the point of no return, culminating in the final moment when he is torn apart by her massive tidal forces. If you'd like to see the constellation Cygnus, you can find it almost directly overhead early in the evening, with its brightest star Deneb at its northern tip representing the swan's tail, as if it were flying south for the winter; the bright star to its west is Vega of the neighbouring constellation Lyra, mentioned in the lyrics here. Okay now, on to Book 2!! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
Pardon me but you may have noticed that I am a bit of a comment junky. I love your channel because of your joyous reactions and not necessarily for the songs themselves. That is because I have purchased all of the media that Rush has released. I can only do that with artists that I truly love since if an artist can't be listened to repeatedly my cash might as well go in the trash. I know all of the songs that are reacted to over and over again, which is why I prefer to suggest deep cuts/back tracks. Apologies for not being able to offer financial support but maybe someday... Keep up the good work but no need to rush it...!!😊
If there ONE person I would go back in time with to see one of the many RUSH shows I have been to,It would be with you... YOUR a Fan and a half,,I love to see you react to RUSH,,Geddy s Voice back then could hit highs like no one else could.

Thank you for giving me entertainment to take away from the destruction I've lived through.
@kimherman549 This song got me into armature astronomy too... back in the very early 80s. Spent hours in the school library learning about black holes, which led to galaxies, globular clusters, different types of nebula (the veil nebula in Cygnus is a thing of beauty in a 12" dob under a class 2 Bortel sky at Cherry Springs). What other rock band gets a teenager to do research? Back then I saved my grass cutting money and slowly bought pieces to make my own 8" dob. My buddy and I spent hours looking for Cygnus X1 even though we knew we would never find it. BTW, Neils "directions" in the song are very accurate, as expected. I now have an astronomy oriented play list that I play at star parties, and public out reach. Many rush songs on there including this one
i made my own cut of hemispheres and replaced the short instrumental with cygnus x-1 and after he is ripped apart by the blackhole he wakes up in Olympus and hemispheres ends normally

In the constellation of Cygnus There lurks a mysterious, invisible force The Black Hole Of Cygnus X-1 Six Stars of the Northern Cross In mourning for their sister’s loss In a final flash of glory Nevermore to grace the night… 1 Invisible To telescopic eye Infinity The star that would not die All who dare To cross her course Are swallowed by A fearsome force Through the void To be destroyed Or is there something more? Atomized - at the core Or through the Astral Door - To soar… 2 I set a course just east of Lyra And northwest of Pegasus Flew into the light of Deneb Sailed across the Milky Way On my ship, the ‘Rocinante’ Wheeling through the galaxies, Headed for the heart of Cygnus Headlong into mystery The x-ray is her siren song My ship cannot resist her long Nearer to my deadly goal Until the Black Hole - Gains control… 3 Spinning, whirling, Still descending Like a spiral sea, Unending Sound and fury Drowns my heart Every nerve Is torn apart….

Keep the Rush coming.
Awesome! Thank you!
I lived near Iowa City for a while. Go Hawks!
Exiting music.So rare
👍😀
You have me sweating now...lol
lol
What I wonder is did the guys know where they were going with the story when they made Cygnus X-1, or did they figure it out when they started making Hemispheres?
This song was a huge influence on Les Claypool
I can see that!!! That makes sense!
❤❤❤
You will now need to listen to Hemispheres for part 2❤
Book two yes 😊
Love this so much, the last song on my favourite album, I'm actually wearing the t-shirt tonight too lol.
I still have only 3/63 Rush reactions blocked on your channel. I wish I knew which ones they were.
This was fun
Next Rush song to listen to: Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres from the next album (Hemispheres)!
That was so good!!
Please please please do Headlong flight studio and Secret Touch live !!!
Keep up the good work but no need to rush it...!!😊
Heck ya!!
If there ONE person I would go back in time with to see one of the many RUSH shows I have been to,It would be with you... YOUR a Fan and a half,,I love to see you react to RUSH,,Geddy s Voice back then could hit highs like no one else could.
in 1977, Cygnus X1 got boo-ed at The Montreal Forum during the long instrumental part before vocals. Was I ever shocked.
Oh, thank you! That’s so nice!
What the heck? 🤯
I forgot to warn you of the shocking changes. 😂
Cygnus X - 1 is the first black hole discovered.
You do a fantastic job. Love when when you stop it to share your thoughts. It's reaction video so I like hearing your reactions. I just got back internet through my hotspot on my phone because I'm in Western North Carolina and the damage is horrible. I still have several giant trees on my house. Thank you for giving me entertainment to take away from the destruction I've lived through.
Holy cow!!! omg!!! Im so glad you are alive! What a terrible mess!!
❤❤❤ 🇨🇦
Ok you absolutely have to do book 2 now
Yes it's inevitable, the best music of their prog period IMO.
Agreed 👍 👍
This guitar effect can be done with a slight distortion of a chorusing pedal. (question at 14:30)
Wasn't expecting the skirt. I like, do it again to borrow your catchphrase Red. 😚
Sound of fury drowns my heart every nerve is torn apart!!!!!! Only RUSH the world would be a far more mundane place have they never been. The mere thought makes me nauseated.
Those keyboards you hear in the first couple minutes are played with their feet.
This was a wild ride red. And I sent you a request several months ago for you to react to I just wanted a update when you will you replied to me a while back it's on your list because the Wintersun UA-cam fan community are waiting for your reaction since I notified them a few months ago red . The song is Wintersun sons of winter and stars 1.5 official lyric video from Wintersun jari UA-cam channel. They are a sister band with nightwish because they have band members that were in Wintersun. So send me back a reply back if you have a date for the reaction. Thank you your subscriber Wintersun Alex ❄️♥️
Okay. Will you send me an email with the appropriate links? I appreciate it.
@@redheadedneighbor hey
Her: reacting to a spiral unending by getting out of her chair…
Us: knowing that every nerve is about to be torn apart😅
lol
Your reactions are adorable...I say to myself shes gonna love this part coming up and sure enough you replay the part...priceless
In the constellation of Cygnus
There lurks a mysterious, invisible force
The Black Hole
Of Cygnus X-1
Six Stars of the Northern Cross
In mourning for their sister’s loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night…
1
Invisible
To telescopic eye
Infinity
The star that would not die
All who dare
To cross her course
Are swallowed by
A fearsome force
Through the void
To be destroyed
Or is there something more?
Atomized - at the core
Or through the Astral Door -
To soar…
2
I set a course just east of Lyra
And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
Sailed across the Milky Way
On my ship, the ‘Rocinante’
Wheeling through the galaxies,
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
Headlong into mystery
The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the Black Hole -
Gains control…
3
Spinning, whirling,
Still descending
Like a spiral sea,
Unending
Sound and fury
Drowns my heart
Every nerve
Is torn apart….
