Yeah, it shows a lot about Mary's character that she was concerned about Kathy, even though she hates her guts. Mary can be stubborn and petty but she has a good heart.

Just realized that when Cathy is talking about James, he can't take his eyes off her while she barely looks at him, it's more like she's trying to convince Mary and Sarah. Everyone's acting is just perfect.
"Mum's had a lot going on." Poor James, its obvious that he's aware that Kathy is only using him to get her sticker business off the ground, but he still wants to see the best in her.

Poor James clearly worships his mum even though she seems rather self absorbed. He made the right choice staying in Derry with aunt Mary.

@@mrpotatohead6264 quite impressed the aunt who thinks light fingered Sr Declan was a woman of God is good with the gay thing to begin with. I think Deirdre said it herself to Ma Mary? I’ll not lie is a grand phrase.
James hardly ever defends himself when being put down, but immediately defended and made excuses for his mom anytime she was questioned. As much of a punching bag his character was, this was when I genuinely felt so bad for James and just wanted him happy
James is so polite and Mary cares for him, as one of her own and you can see how much disdain she has for Kathy
I love Aunt Sarah, every scene she's in makes me laugh
Me too, it must be a family trait, since both Sarah and Orla can deliver laughs, even if they're only in the background of a scene.
I love the look on Michelle's face when she see James mum. You can tell she was going to say something before Claire and Erin started shouting.
I agree, Michelle looked SO exasperated with Erin and Clare, and it was clear that she recognised Kathy from the start. It was still super hilarious, though!

Bless James, he has a good heart. His mother has neglected him in the past and is very clearly only trying to use him now, but he still tries to see the best in her.

i rlly like that about ireland. family is so important, extended or not, having family live with you is just fine because thats whats family is for. i get surprised in the uk if someones got anyone that isnt immediate living with them

I don’t know with scrapbooking and water bottles and chrome books she should have made stickers. Graphic Design became a thing. Who knew? Even stamps and envelopes don’t have to be licked.

In 1997, labels were the extent of graphic design that could be produced outside a specialist workshop. Unless you went into video, where you could, with some fairly expensive equipment, add titles to home video tapes (DVD'S came out that year).
PowerPoint existed but was still really only for slides, Adobe was Photoshop, DTP was still pretty rough, (PageMaker, anybody?), if you wanted something more complex made you had to send off for it to be produced. Using email and copying a picture from the internet was still regarded as an adventure.

Fun fact: The actress playing James's mom is only 10 years older than James. She was 36 here and Dylan who plays James was 26 here.
Interestingly 36 is probably around how old Kathy is, considering James is around 16 and she probably had James as pretty young adult, and her sister is around 37

Making high end self adhesive labels for bespoke items is so 2022. Kathy's just a creative who was ahead of her time.
Computers in 1997 weren't really set up for producing arty label sheets. They had about the same capabilities as the earlier generations of smartphones. It's so easy these days that frankly, buying them in may be a more limited market than in 1997, when you may have needed someone to either design and print them for you or at least to shrink down your own design without too much aliasing and keeping them as legible as possible.
Cathy's ex-husband Paul isn't James' father, because in this she says both men disliked her seeing other men.
Couldn't he be the son of one of her ex husbands? There's no evidence that says that James is the result of an affair
@@jakewilliams2497 There's no indication that she's been married more than once. We don't know for certain that she hasn't been, but the fact that she went to London to abort James makes it very likely that she was single at the time.
In this scene, she says that her ex-husband Paul was controlling & insecure, then says that James' father was the same - hence they can't be the same man. Also, James mentions growing up with a stepfather.

She is self absorbed. To her they would ex husbands not his father. But it’s is ambiguous. He may have been or may not have been. It would be assumed she would have been single when pregnant to go to England for an abortion. Probably just to the leave cause a single parent would have been a problem. Maybe she later married him? With all the English talk I wonder if James’s dad was a Protestant? Another reason to leave and raise him elsewhere and not draw attention to the dad.

I don't remember any point in the series where Mary had an affectionate word for James, or treated him particularly well. But, MAN she wanted to protect him like one of her own here. Just first class writing all the way.
Nah, she’s always had a slight soft spot for James, perhaps because he’s always polite to her, and even gives her the occasional compliment. It may well be what leads her to call James when Erin gets stood up on Prom night… of course, by contrast, the first time Erin meets James’ mum she loudly accuses her of being a kidnapper.
James's mom almost reminds me of my own mother. No matter how sweet she seems there is always something else she wants and that is not an honest relationship. And other things...

No matter what he says they really won’t blame him because he’s just a boy who loves his mother and they know she was taking advantage of that even if he can’t see it unfortunately.

They rang Russell Grant’s horoscope hotline.
It used to be that how far away you called cost more than near by for a land line. Also across state lines. You could live 5 minutes from a border state and pay long distance charges by the minute. They also had phone lines you could call for a service like a party chat line or horoscope line that was by the minute. 20 minutes and you a charge enough to fill the car with gas. So she called to listen to a horoscope or have her fortune done and her mom got quite a shock when she opened the phone bill. I want to know why her mom the waitress doesn’t have her daughter work waiting tables? She seems old enough. I don’t know why she called the hotline, Aunt Sarah has a certificate. LOL

Aunt Sara got a counterfeit flag. The stars would not have been in that pattern. For some odd reason they were all excited. I was an adult when President Bill Clinton visited my US cities and I did my best to avoid the area, traffic… They wanted a day off.

I love Erin and Clare's over the top reactions to believing that they're being kidnapped. Same goes for Mary and Sarah subtly shading Kathy, while complimenting her immaculate eyebrows.

It’s extra hilarious now the show’s over and we know that Erin and James are set up to be together, so basically Erin’s first meeting with her mum in law she screams that she’s being abducted in a public place. Classic Erin.
