I love as much as they trash James, when his mother returned everyone was quick to protect him
Same - I felt so sad for James in that episode and found it so heartwarming that they all came together for him.

Frankly, I found it hypocritical. The way they treat him is no better. At least his mom acts like she cares about him sometimes.

I think it's funny because it is so true that teens sometimes have the weirdest tastes... looking back the guys that were considered unattractive in school were actually the attractive ones looking back but then the "hot" guys in school were actually super douchy in retrospect XDDD

Watched all of them for first time last week. Such a pity there’s only 3 seasons.
I was a teen in the 90s, I remember a gf having some the clothes Erin wore.

Personally I think it was right to end when it did. 3 seasons was enough. It will likely go down over time snore of the classic sitcoms imo. I hate it when shows really overstay their welcome and completely run out of ideas. The Inbetweeners comes to mind as a good recent example. Also they're similar kinds of shows.
@@Noobie2k7 yeah I agree the writer had a clear plan for 3 seasons from the beginning, that’s why it’s so good. She picked 3 major moments from the troubles in the 90s and built the show around that in the background, ending with the good Friday agreement. More seasons just wouldn’t have the same impact
How can I watch the third season? I live in nyc and Netflix doesn't have it here yet! Is it streaming on any other services?

It's a subtle commentary on prejudice: James is 100% Irish by birth, he's even Catholic, but because his mom had him in London, he's English, no different from the Invaders and Colonizers...

He’s not even English! At least not ethnically. Both his parents are Irish and he was raised by an Irish mother.
In the back of my mind, I had the exact same thought as this whenever they call him English.
It’s the accent. Accent is such an enormous part of someone’s identity and plays such a huge role in how they’re seen by others.

Because if it were uncensored, it wouldn't appear on the front page, or suggestions, on UA-cam. Which would make it a bad promotional video for the upcoming series

Glad that James got to kiss Erin and have a good story for once. I know it’s exaggerated for comedic effect but I don’t miss the mean-spirited comedy of the 80s and 90s and I prefer when the show is more warm-hearted.

They pick on James because he's one of the only characters who can see through all their bullshit. (Gerry fulfills the same role for the adults.) If they were nice to him all the time, scenes where they drop the mask for a moment wouldn't work. Take the one where James announces his departure. It's Michelle - the worst bully among them - who pleads with him not to leave. For the briefest moment she drops the posh, mean girl persona and we see her for who she actually is: lonely, insecure, vulnerable.

@@5888max Your edginess aside, it’s not odd at all. Britain is a much bigger market and Lisa McGee already had contacts there. They also sold the concept to Netflix for the same reason.

They bully him so much you wonder why he stayed friends with them. When he said he has Stockholm syndrome I totally agree. What's really jarring is how uneven the show is. One minute they love him and next they are slagging him off. They almost cried when he was going to leave Derry and in series 3 they think he is dying after the van hits him, yet later on they still treat him like shit.
They all give each other crap. Not just James. It’s just funnier when they do it to James.
Not excusing the way they behave towards James, or the frankly offensive things they say to/ about him, but in essence they treat him the way you'd treat a younger sibling? (least that's kinda how it worked in Belfast growing up )

Seriously, I think he was right, it was Stockholm syndrome. I think I can count the legitimately nice moments between him and another character on one hand. Why I didn't see the threat of him leaving as particularly sad, or him deciding to stay as particularly happy
I thought it was just me. I know its comedic to watch but if you think about being in his shoes in real life, it's not exactly fun to be treated this way (even if the insults are half-hearted.)

It’s funny though, because even though they teased him he was always hanging out with them, getting into trouble with them. The scene where he took Erin to the prom, or when the Ukrainians came Derry and they didn’t want him to hook up with Katya. Or the funeral debacle and obsessing over the cool teacher with them. Sure there are moments where they tease him for being English or feminine, but I think at the end of the day they care a lot about him and don’t really mean it. That’s why the group is always together doing things. ( also michelle is his cousin, so it makes sense why she does the majority of the insults, it’s like me and my cousin 😁)

The thing is James is actually Irish. His mum and dad (whoever he is) are both Irish. Not everything born in a stable is a horse.
Jeez, that discussion again! Nationality and ethnicity are not god given and cut in stone, they are constructs and therefore construable. If you say that James is irish, you argue from the principle of Jus sanguini (right of blood) which claims that nationality is dependend on the nationality of the parents. But Ireland was following the Jus soli (right of soil) until the end of 2004, which proclaimed that everyone born on irish soil was of irish nationality. When they claim in the show that James is english, it's on the principle of Jus soli (he was born and raised in England). It's a matter of interpretation. So you can claim that James is irish, but that doesn't make it an universal fact, it's still up to interpretation.
