NPR's #1 song of 2019. Bob Boilen said it best:
"No song in 2019 felt more searing, more perfect, than "Not." It's a song of anguish. You can hear it in Adrianne Lenker's voice and her words. As the song builds to its climax, she sings a series of denials, circling a description of something essential that remains just out of her grasp:
"It's not the room / Not beginning / Not the crowd / Not winning / Not the planet / Not spinning / Not a ruse / Not heat / Not the fire lapping up the creek / Not food / Not to eat / Not to die / Not dying / Not to laugh / Not lying / Not the vacant wilderness vying / Not the room / Not beginning / Not the crowd / Not winning / Not the planet / Not spinning"
Then it comes, at 3:22 into the song, my favorite moment of my favorite song by my favorite band in 2019: Adrianne Lenker's anguished guitar, Buck Meek's guitar roar, the bass of Max Oleartchik and James Krivchenia's drums coalesce. You'd think as a music journalist I could tell you why, but here's where I fail. I can only tell you it's visceral and cathartic. But the very subject of the song itself, or at least the feeling of that subject, is the inability to describe what that something is, only to be able to explain what it is not. And there lies the urgency, the mystery - for me the thrill of art is when it's ethereal, indescribable and otherworldly. I feel better; I cannot tell you why."

Mike Dionne you are in the right profession my friend
@@Qwickv i think you mean Bob Boilen
i kinda like ufof a bit more but i totally agree
it cuts deep but smudges with a warm embrace
a small reminder that life is a gift, with all of its pain included
This is why I can't sleep. Hours on UA-cam watching every single version of this song out there, over, and over and over again...
Me too
I'm on my second obsession with it...just watched the recent Dutch clip where she looks upset as hell from previous exertions n forgets the start of the song
damn me too
Same, hi!
Same here
no one is dressed for the same occasion lol i love these guys
Cool observation
@@whith5184 cool sarcasm
Heheheheh , was thinking just the same thing 😂😂😂
Just be glad they bothered to dress.
Not the outfit, not tempting, not the great people here commenting 🖤
I can't hear enough live performances of this song.
I'm sorry to hear that. Play it on a loop? It's a smasher though innit.
The homeless guy on Drums is killing it.
yo that's the ghost of Mick Fleetwood, show some respect
This song is about the inability to describe something, which is what i feel now, but what a performance. i feel heart opened somehow. and i so love the attitude of the guitarist, the guy is now my definition of charisma.
all of them are charismatic i think! it might be the shameless emersion in the music
I think otherwise. Its about our ability to being so predictable when it comes to assume anything. We always tend to stick with what we believe is the answer. And the answer is something else but what we cannot want to see because we prefer not to see beyond our comfort zone
One of the best songs of the decade.
Agree! A lot of classic tunes that have this beautiful flow...they nailed it!!! 🤟😜🤘
i totally agree, its hard to find good music like this in the current day and age
@@indy-dog2 It really isn't at all. It's literally never been easier.
@@jonathanb1406 and that's your opinion 🙏
@@indy-dog2 No, it's a fact. It has indisputably never been easier.
I saw them last night (15 September 2021). They are the most important rock n roll band out there writing, recording, & performing. Astonishing.
Couldn't agree more. I saw them open for the national in 2018. Blew my mind then, blow my mind now.
not the energy reeling
Nor the lines in your face
Nor the clouds on the ceiling
Nor the clouds in space
It's not the phone on the table
Nor the bed in the earth
Nor the bed in the stable
Nor your stable words
It's not the formless being
Nor the cry in the air
Nor the boy I'm seeing
With her long black hair
It's not the open weaving
Nor the furnace glow
Nor the blood of you bleeding
As you try to let go
It's not the room
Not beginning
Not the crowd
Not winning
Not the planet
Not spinning
Not a rouse
Not heat
Not the fire lapping up the creek
Not food
Not to eat
Not the meat of your thigh
Nor your spine tattoo
Nor your shimmery eye
Nor the wet of the dew
It's not the warm illusion
Nor the crack in the plate
Nor the breath of confusion
Nor the starkness of slate
It's not the room
Not beginning
Not the crowd
Not winning
Not the planet
Not spinning
Not a rouse
Not heat
Not the fire lapping up the creek
Not food
Not to eat
Not what you really wanted
Nor the mess in your purse
Nor the bed that is haunted
With a blanket of thirst
It's not the hunger revealing
Nor the ricochet in the cave
Nor the hand that is healing
Nor the nameless grave
It's not the room
Not beginning
Not the crowd
Not winning
Not the planet
Not spinning
Not a rouse
Not heat
Not the fire lapping up the creek
Not food
Not to eat
Not to die
Not dying
Not to laugh
Not lying
Not the vacant wilderness vying
Not the room
Not beginning
Not the crowd
Not winning
Not the planet
Not spinning

In this performance she actually sings "nor the girl that Im seeing" ;) But thanks for the lyrics!
Fucking love the almost Sonic Youth-esque outro. Reminds me of The Diamond Sea. Phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal.
yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s like Radiohead and Cranberries banged and 9 months after this was the result
Top Songs of 2019:

- Walk Away- (Sandy) Alex G
- Uncomfortably Numb- American Football

the order is honestly constantly shifting and it's insanely hard to make a list. Don't judge too harshly.
I fucking love Walk Away and that whole album
love this list, gonna have to listen to Freddie Gibbs and Faye Webster!
@@OpenOurHearts Freddie Gibbs' album is bananas! Faye Webster's is also phenomenal. KEXP NEEDS TO DO A SESSION WITH THEM!
You forgot Chance by Angel Olsen :(
Raw full of emotion, this is possibly the best performance I've seen on KEXP
Music was my life but I let I go.
Wasn't strong enough to deal with one family death after another.
I used to perform for anyone that asked.
I gave it everything.
This song took me back.
Every line she sang is like a page of my life.
I'm almost in tears.
I'm so broke and a father of two.
All I ever hear people say is, if I'm retired.
It would make me so sad.
They don't know I've been playing for my kids everyday.
This song said everything.
Thanks Big Thief
I feel you, man, but life is happening to you right now and I think you really should give it another try. you have the power to keep writing your story, and art is such a beautiful thing to share and create.
I feel this. The first song I heard was masterpiece and before I could even really listen close I was crying the second I heard the verse "Lying in a hospital bed
Eyes are narrow blue and red
Took a draw of breath and said to me"
Hell I feel it now just writing that.... Anyone they have helped me to sing songs I've written years ago after my brother died and my addictions destroyed my marriage. Things that were so hard to even say got a little easier. It's okay to be vulnerable. Much love keep playing & making art. Kids are the best aidience anyways
Oh man... Can I help? :/ I don't own much, but I give from my heart :(
Yo I hope things have got better for you! Keep going.
@@zappa7717 Hey man. Don't give up. It's never too late and you're never too old. Don't let anyone tell you different. Fuck 'em all. Your kids will thank you for giving them a happier father my friend.
They always go NUTS on this song and I absolutely love it.
The passion is her fucking eyesss bro
I love how despite the incredible chemistry, every member still has a really distinct and original way of playing.
I can only see this song getting even more praised and significant over the years
Will go down in history as one of the best of its kind in both the 2010s and the 21st century ❤️
Is just me or do I hear a little Crazy Horse feel here!
Oh yeah. Love that ragged approach.
Dylan/Townes in a good way
Yeah, I def feel some Neil Young/Crazy Horse. Best song I've heard in a minute. Truly breathtaking and visceral.
Crazy Horse and Built to Spill. I'd love to hear them and Doug Martsch jamming.
that's just because Neils basically father to every modern genre
Best $35 dollars I've spent this year was the hour and half I got to see them play!
Yeah this is the best song of all time IMO
2019 year of Big Thief
Yeah I’d go with that.
If there could even be an inheritor of Neil Young, it’s them
Coming back from the future to say that you're going to really need this song come April. Just sayin'...
We did. This shit basically became my Christmas music.
I'm glazed eyed, speechless, thankful. It's very evident KEXP took great care documenting that. Phenomenal vid. I think they displayed a great appreciation for this station and it's listeners with that performance. There are a lot of vids of this song on UA-cam ( I haven't watched them all), I imagine this one's a clear stand out
If poetry can be a song, this is what I would sing. It breaks my heart and makes me wanting more at the same time. Just genius.
buck looking particularly drippy in this one I must confess
How can you not love this band? I've been playing them non-stop for the past month. Can't wait for their show in LA.
I'm the same way, Davy. I only discovered Adrianne Lenker about 9 months ago. I listened to her Tiny Desk at Home set every night for about a month. Her emotion, her perfect voice, her virtuoso guitar work. Then I started listening to UFOF and Two Hands and was blown away. I haven't been so excited about a band since I first heard "Quadrophenia" by The Who. The chemistry, the musicianship, the lyrical prowess, the power, the emotion. Big Thief is crushing it on all levels. If you haven't seen the version of "Not" from Pitchfork 2021 on UA-cam go there immediately. She takes the solo to another level. I'm going to Adrianne's solo show in Minneapolis on Nov. 21st and to Big Thief's show in St. Paul on April. And they're releasing a double album in early 2022! I can't wait!!!
Came here for Josh Klinghoffer 😂💜💜💜

It's not the past nor the future. It's not your history or the eternal. It's not your regrets or your mistakes. It's not the image you see in the mirror nor the clothes you wear. It's just... not.
Buck meek is immense. That is all
Bro, I feel this in my bones.
Insane vocals and musical magic
I Love her rage...seriously YT you delete that? It's called a complement. Smdh
It's amazing how her voice sounds exactly like it does in the original audio
Josh Klinghoffer me trouxe aqui... obrigada
Amém
Not your usual youtube commenter here but I need to say it...damn, that's good. Really good.
What a fantastic song. I’ve enjoyed watching other live ‘Not’ performances on You Tube where she slays that guitar piece at the end. Wow
She really looks like Christine and the Queens
Yeah...I love her too!! 👍🏼😍
Man, how those vocals bounce off each other from 2:41...
Wow this version rips
this is pure gold guys, just made me felt great, whole again. hope to watch you in İstanbul one day.
An instant classic.
Their album is such a masterpiece.
So sincere, intense...
song of the year, this song has this thing with breakin my heart and i LOVE it
best solo in this version
I like how Buck dances without moving.
Absolutely astonishing!!❤️❤️Most defenitely best song of 2019
song of the year for me
agreed. for me too...
I want to go afterparty with the bassist I wanna see where he goes in that outfit
Heard this on french public radio France Inter yesterday. Im hooked. This is Emmylou's children doing it with the Neil Young from Arc/Weld period. I like her voice so much.
Wow….just wow! Perfection!
I really hope Cheryl hosted this sess!
Unfortunately not. It's Morgan. You can watch the entire session here - ua-cam.com/video/5oODr-7y3M0/v-deo.html
This is so moody, I love it. First time I’ve heard this as well.
Jack Baker and so raw and honest
Feelin it 3:39
Never fails to make me cry
Legendary. Absolute amazing sound quality.
One of my favorite albums-song of this year 🔥♥️🙂
Masterpiece
bloody hell
so epic. love her guitar sound
Like what the f are they talking about??? Love? If it’s NOT all those other things? Just love? I never figured it out but certainly love the song.
Transcendental and Neil Youngesque!!!
I am very surprised at how talented they all are. Surely this a powerful song...one to remember for the road.
Thanks for Josh Klinghoffer, now i know this beautiful song
~ Revolution beginning!!!
Reminded me of Robert Quine a bit at the end
Una canción así, interpretada con esta visceralidad, son las cosas que a mi me conmueven.
I bet their tour bus reeks
Absolutely incredible! Best song of the year!
Hear some Pixies?
That's the real deal right there. Best band in the world right now.
Amazing performance, totally in love. So glad I found this.
That moment with her voice and the drums..... gotdam
you are the usa I wish usa would be. If that was the case, we would all be safe. thanks.
This is gonna help me thru the Second Wave...
And the third .-.
what about the 4th though friend?
@@7bean3 that too!
Wasn't the bassist the guy who stormed the Capitol?
This got me
perfeitos!
Omg, Adrienne Lenker, if I could bear your child I would
It’s not my life, in prison 5 years, not China, not those three years, not 15 countries, not riding, not motorcycling Mexico to Winnipeg, not over Labor Day weekend, not quitting motorcycling, not the coma, it’s not dying every day from not riding. It’s not my TBI, not my wife’s broken arm, not my sister dying in 2021 from fentanyl, not my brother Fred in 2016 from lifetimes of drugs, it’s not my brother, mentally ill in the ghetto, not his roommate still selling meth. It’s not death it’s not to die soon , it’s not living with my heart broke, your guitar, your healing notes, it’s not that it’s all that, it’s enough but still it’s not. Self-immolation, spurting blood all these things must be enough!
Play, Adrienne, playyyy!
I watch this video at least 3 times a day
it made me think of hey hey my my
Holy Snappers.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That comes from a place I’m glad to know about from someone else; painfully beautiful.
Watching this for the first time ever but this is a song I listen to over and over again. The most important song to me in the past year. I got divorced October of last yr. We were together for almost 9 years but would of been married 3 yrs. We were married 10/26/19. Same day this song was posted

Best live version. They are awesome. So deep. Love it
Damn. What a song.
Wha'Da'fuk is the drummer doing?
KEXP sound mixers/engineers are so good at what they do 🏆
it's not
so powerful, so surreal
You cannot pretend that compenatrion between guitarrists
God I love them: i love how they all look like they should be in different bands. The drummer looks like he just puffed a doobie and is over enthusiastic about his vocal part , not realizing they’re louder than Adriene’s lololololol
Naah I think they realize its on purpose
Intense !
