this version of "not" carried me through a suicidal depression that i went through in the beginning of 2020. i can't explain the ways and means of it anymore. but i'm so appreciative of the band for producing it.
Big Thief is the most real band I have seen in a very long time, and Adrienne Lenker is this generation’s best songwriter in my opinion. I just love how the lyrics can be so visceral and so moving at the same time... Her songs, to me, are all about how life can be beautiful and crushing at the same time. And I love how they four look like they are not trying to be anything they are not, and MAN, there you see a show well played! And I can see all that through a screen in my living room in a melancholic self distancing brazilian evening... What a time to be alive!!!
Buck Meek - biggest reach in rock. How many octaves can that dude play at once?! Never seen anyone play rythym like it! Totally amazing! Love to KEXP and Big Thief!
agreed. I have rewatched many KEXP sessions but...this one.....I come back to over and over and over for that song. That solo is like...beautiful chaos.
Andy Baxter saw them on their last UK tour in a small venue and it was mind blowing. So much love in the room. Seeing them in April again and can’t wait!
Ive always wondered if it was some sort of tic? But ive never been sure and can never find anything about it? It seems to be only when he's playing or singing but especially the way he moves his head has me wondering 😂 he's awesome though, so even if it is some sort of tic i dont think it hinders him at all, even his solo stuff is amazing
Definitely one of the best live videos of theirs that I've seen. Great production by KEXP too. Also, Max is such a goof with that f-ing hat. What a wonderful group of idiosyncratic folks.
Yeah I got the Neil Young thing too.. When he's live, doing the extended guitar solos where it has no real structure, but he's going where it takes him.. I think it helps that he was a bit limited on lead guitar intricacies which made him freer to do what he felt rather than being chained to the music theory
Oh my god they evolved so much I hadn’t listened to their new stuff yet but like they’re gonna play a show next month where I live so I got the ticket and im like really high right now and shook
Absolutely love the guitar solo at 21:10. He's trying hard to play it as messy as possible and the other's are all lovin it, and yet it still sounds amazing

Awesome band! i love everyting about Adrienne and her song writing... original and inspired. "Not" is a brilliant song but spend some time listing to the Big Thief back catalogue for many beautiful songs. Belas palavras, mano.
Também amo as composições da Adrienne.
O novo trampo dela solo tá 10/10
Se não fosse sarah jarosz eu não estaria aqui. Vale a pena conferir o trabalho dela, ela fez um cover de cattails que ficou lindo demais.
stay safe and healthy my friend
I'm obsessed with "not" it's such a visceral song, I don't know it just hit me
I feel EXACTLY the same and described your words to my wife just earlier today.
Same! It puts me in a weird state. Anyone know more music like it?
@@Metabrotropic Elliott Smith may hit similarly
@@Metabrotropic love this song too...it reminds me of an album called "The Decline of British Sea Power"
The sum is greater than its parts on many levels in that song.... It just builds, I love it. It transcend "music" and becomes something more...
Buck Meek - biggest reach in rock. How many octaves can that dude play at once?! Never seen anyone play rythym like it! Totally amazing! Love to KEXP and Big Thief!
I was thinking, WTF are those voicings? 😅
The drummer looks like a dude who hangs out with everyone but never says a word, just chilling, and then gets on the drums and comes alive
Like John Bonham, except for the skill
Too busy planning his next fly fishing trip
Love when Buck has those couple of lines of vocals to himself during masterpiece. Priceless smile.
Not is the best song I have heard in years and years. I listen to every version I can get my hands on. And that scream she does is incredible.
agreed. I have rewatched many KEXP sessions but...this one.....I come back to over and over and over for that song. That solo is like...beautiful chaos.
"Not" has to be one of the absolute best songs ever created! That solo is always so emotional!
One of the best bands making music these days... incredible stuff.
Bucks anti-solo at 21:09 is just amazing, bless this man for showing us the way
Probably one of the better ones he's done, but I'm not really a huge fan of that style, it's not always complimentary imo, but maybe that's the point.
KEXP is life.
Agreed!
Big Thief is life
And now they're nominated for a GRAMMY! Well done, guys!
REALLY? Thank you for sharing that info.
You can tell when an artist is genuine and this band exudes artistic integrity.

''Not'' is such a masterpiece! Always crying over here.
I'm with you there. Outstanding
this performance of masterpiece is such a mess and i love it so much
The irony of "Masterpiece" - Cooouuuullddd be my favorite that I've seen online.
I like the Tiny Desk Concert version a bit more but Im pleased that they are tinkering and being free with songs
And they were all smiles the whole time. It's part of THE song, after all...
I love how each song descends into madness from such calm, it's what makes them so good live. Really takes you somewhere
i like how buck marinates on his guitar. he looks like a chef who approves of the meal he just made

I feel the same emotions I felt when I heard Arcade fire for the first time. Stopped me in my tracks. Fantastic sound and hard hitting lyrically.
So Agree. Connections. We are all connected.

Definitely one of the best live videos of theirs that I've seen. Great production by KEXP too.
Also, Max is such a goof with that f-ing hat. What a wonderful group of idiosyncratic folks.
Love how their bassist is really rocking that wolf hat
It's not a hat. It's his real hair.
Adrianne’s approach to soloing is always so phenomenal.
Seeing these guys in December and I have never been more excited for a show
Great band and performance. The Furry on the bass has surprising biceps
This is four people living life. Love it.
I cant get over the majesty of this performance of “Not”. Thank you Adrienne
This is one hell of a good band. Adrianne Lenker does some lead guitar work that taps into the same cosmic mystery that Neil Young discovered. Wow.
Yeah I got the Neil Young thing too.. When he's live, doing the extended guitar solos where it has no real structure, but he's going where it takes him.. LYRICS
Shoulders
Please wake up
Please wake up
Touch my skin and tell me where you been
You brought me in
You brought me in
So touch my skin and tell me where you been
You showed me how
To keep myself from burning out
They found you in the morning
The blood was on your shoulders
They found you at the corner
Your head was doubled over
And the blood of the man who killed my mother with his hands
Is in me
It's in me
In my veins
Please wake up
Please wake up
Touch my skin and tell me where you been
You brought me in
My best friend
So touch my skin and tell me where you been
You showed me how
To hold my sin
And kiss the bad ways I have been
They found you in the morning
The blood was on your shoulders
They found you at the corner
Your head was doubled over
And the blood of the man who's killing our mother with his hands
Is in me
It's in me
In my veins
It's in me
It's in me
In my veins
Not
It's not the energy reeling
Nor the lines in your face
Nor the clouds on the ceiling
Nor the clouds in space
It's not the phone on the table
Nor the bed in the earth
Nor the bed in the stable
Nor your stable words
It's not the formless being
Nor the cry in the air
Nor the boy I'm seeing
With her long black hair
It's not the open weaving
Nor the furnace glow
Nor the blood of you bleeding
As you try to let go
It's not the room
Not beginning
Not the crowd
Not winning
Not the planet
Not spinning
Not a rouse
Not heat
Not the fire lapping up the creek
Not food
Not to eat
Not the meat of your thigh
Nor your spine tattoo
Nor your shimmery eye
Nor the wet of the dew
It's not the warm illusion
Nor the crack in the plate
Nor the breath of confusion
Nor the starkness of slate
It's not the room
Not beginning
Not the crowd
Not winning
Not the planet
Not spinning
Not a rouse
Not heat
Not the fire lapping up the creek
Not food
Not to eat
Not what you really wanted
Nor the mess in your purse
Nor the bed that is haunted
With a blanket of thirst
It's not the hunger revealing
Nor the ricochet in the cave
Nor the hand that is healing
Nor the nameless grave
It's not the room
Not beginning
Not the crowd
Not winning
Not the planet
Not spinning
Not a rouse
Not heat
Not the fire lapping up the creek
Not food
Not to eat
Not to die
Not dying
Not to laugh
Not lying
Not the vacant wilderness vying
Not the room
Not beginning
Not the crowd
Not winning
Not the planet
Not spinning
Masterpiece
Years, days, makes no difference to me babe
You look exactly the same to me
Ain't no time, crossing your legs inside the diner
Raising your coffee to your lips, the steam
You saw the masterpiece, she looks a lot like you
Wrapping her left arm around your right
Ready to walk you through the night
You whisper to a restless ear, "can you get me out of here?
This place smells like piss and beer, can you get me out?"
You were asking me, how to get you free
I only know the recipe to roam
You saw the masterpiece, she looks a lot like you
Wrapping her left arm around your right
Ready to walk you through the night
Old stars
Filling up my throat
You gave em to me when I was born
Now they're coming out
Laying there on the hospital bed your eyes were narrow, blue and red
You took a draw of breath and said to me
You saw the masterpiece, she looks a lot like me
Wrapping my left arm round your right
Ready to walk you through the night
Old friends, old mothers, dogs and brothers
There's only so much letting go you can ask someone to do
So I keep you by my side, I will not give you to the tide
I'll even walk you in my stride, Marie
Cause I saw the masterpiece, she looks a lot like you
Wrapping your left arm round my right
Ready to walk me through the night
Toy
What a fool, familiar dream
I wake up laughing and running
From the boy crying and coming
'Cause the toy in my hand is real
What a tomb we're building here
In the sphere, that's where we all die
In the eye, that's where I'm living
The toy in my hand is real
In the room, her warm hands play
On my breast, what is she singing?
Her form ringing and ringing
'Cause the toy in my hand is real
The toy in my hand is real
Charcoal, the jet planes purr
In the crew, distant as paper
Children burn, faceless vapor
'Cause the toy in my hand is real
Yes, the toy in my hand is real
