This drummer has a wonderful feel for this kind of music. my kind of dude, not overcomplicating things and staying locked the fuck in
Hell yeah baby, in that pocket.
Yup, drummer is one my favorite things about this band.
He's also a pretty diverse player. A lot of bands are formed by friendship first and foremost, leading to "weak links." This band has none of that shit.
yeh, he's got style
This guy is amazing. Was just listening to Little Things and the drumming on that is mind bending, with little hitches and mismatched rhythms, Stuart Copeland-esque.
She plays and sings right at that line between control and chaos. It's like the line between metal and punk. She warbles, she screams, she whispers and wails and somehow every note is absolutely precise.
She fills a Kurt shaped hole.
well said...
Yeah
100% complete control over every molecule of her musical existence.
Would love to see/hear her cover something by the cranberries. Linger would be epic
the part where she throws her headphones off and tears into the solo will always, always, always give me chills
This version's arguably better than the studio version. Such intensity.
I think the performance is brilliant but the mix isn't the best imo.
@@Bolt_241 Agreed. In fact, there's so many better live versions on UA-cam than this one.
yeah, she gave me goosebumps
'@@Bolt_241 Did you listen with headphones? I thought the same, but then I listened with headphones and it's almost a different song!

Such a song
gang shit
It's kept me from a lot.
I second the motion.
I love how buck looks like he is barely controlling his guitar at points, like he is almost taming it. Love this performance.
He knows how to handle the intensity he knows it and it doesn't bother or scare hes on the level and knows the right approach to be in it.
I spent years, man. YEARS!. Without feeling something even remotely similar to the raw energy and intensity that this performance makes me feel. Is piercing through my heart like a spear.
I hear you man. I saw these guys in 18. Up close and personal. By the end of the show, I was on my knees on the floor. I couldn't stand. I couldn't function. Blown away by the music and intensity of emotion. The only thing I could do was go to my knees and surrender to it.

Fucking love this. Love the rage that comes through Adrianne at around 3:09. God knows there's a lot to rage against in this fucked up world of ours.
You could kind of see it building. She had some possessed energy from the start. Can't take my eyes off of her

This is HAUNTING. This is ART. The groove, the voice, the chemistry, the lyrics. Oh my...
Art? It's haunting all right. As in nightmares. These no talents don't know how to write songs. Same old unimaginative boring monotonous crap. The late 90s called. They want their boring emo crappy sound back.
yourtubesteak LMAO
yourtubesteak so what the hell do you listen to?? Nvm Idgaf, Big Thief is incredible, period.

Amen!!
This band vibes so hard with each other. I really like when she screams.
It describes that feeling when the people ask: What’s happening? Are you sad?
And then you answer: “It’s everything and at the same time is nothing.”
Adrianne 's energy in this performance is the energy I need to get through 2020.
G M you never thought things would be this crazy, tho. Still a great song
Still enough energy to beat the piss out of this shitty year.
@@johnquinn8904 Getting worse and worse... But hey, at least if we make it out of this shitty year alive, a change will be made... 2020 is a turning point, let's hope it's for the better because for now it's scary as fuck...

If you can edit it you put boy when it is actually girl
@@8ecca8eeI like it as boy (that’s honestly what I thought she says. I imagine it as if she’s been hiding who she is and she’s been asked time and time again by family and friends about the boy she’s seeing and she finally takes a tentative step into the light and says “The boy I’m seeing? She has long black hair”. A whole scenario, I know, but that’s the gift good poetry can give you. ❤
My father died this year. This song carries all the emotions I have been suppressing.
Sorry to hear that man.
I’m sorry
All the best man.
may God be with you, sending love
Underrated drummer.. brings a lot of mojo to this group
The ending is fantastic. Adrianne clearly went from herself and the band was just following that mad growing solo until she just turned off the distortion, stopped playing and looked everyone like `ok, thats it for today guys´. Such a real and sincere performance.
those drums sound so good wtf
this band really plays music through their instruments. they're not just playing notes. and they commit to performances.
I know. Simple beat, but it just pounds. Talented people, all of them.
I honestly don't know what to say except that I love this song and I love the people who made it. I don't know your intentions, but this is on the scale of a life changing piece of art.
Seriously though. I was nothing more than in line at a Sheetz when I heard it for the first time, yet I'm sure I'll never forget the memory. What a beautiful experience it is listening to this.

Adrianne Lenker has so much energy and passion in all her work and it amazes me. This performance is incredible.
When she whipped her headphones off to solo, I felt that

Really interesting to see the guitars mic'd acoustically to go along with the mic'd amps.

This song helped me get through the dark days pursuing my dreams in a new city alone. It's hard to live alone by yourself. Now it's a nostalgic warm hug.
Bone scrapingly sublime. The way the song bubbles, bends and slowly billows to a voluptuous volcanic release is such an ecstatic exercise in peerless musicianship, stellar lyricism and a masterclass in songwriting. In this Live performance, the band is tight as a fist and they punch well above their weight in time and space. Beautiful!

This came out when I was in rehab. Thank you for helping me so much.
There are few bands so dam good and serious about music

What a monstruous unleash of energy while still sounding warm and delicate
Without a doubt one of the best songs of last decade
I can’t wait to hear this live after the pandemic is over
Caught them live last Feb just before the lockdowns. Fantastic show. Every bit as good as this video would indicate.
Don't hold your breath.

First heard this song yesterday. I've now listened to it several billion times. For some reason I find it the perfect soundtrack for these interesting times.
I completely agree!
Same !
SAAAME
So I've been weaning myself off SSRIs and this song just destroyed me. Brilliant.
Adrianne is stronger than ever in this video. All that fragility is being sourced through an undeniable Hulk-like strength of feeling. God, their sound is so tight to the 32nd note. Best version out there atm. This song is "The Chain" of our times.
definitely one of the best lyricists to come out recently, real ability to write a song
Big Thief is like the 4 elements coming together to make music. It's visceral and subliminal. It flows and it's a gut punch. I love this music so much.
I think the Album and Radio versions of this song are masterpieces, but this performance is something much different. This is an experience. An unleashed, raw, shamanic ritual that transforms every witness. By the end, a person is either confused or enlightened.
Her solo in this performance hits so much harder than every other performance of this song I've seen.
I've listened to this endlessly for 3 days. I can't even fall asleep because it's playing so clearly in my head during every moment.. @_@
I'm on day 2. Logged about 40 listens already! Can't stop either. Tears, chills, joy, relief

I am compelled to listen to this song every day, very loud, dancing and singing along.
Honestly can't think of a better band on the planet right now.

Essa banda é uma das melhores a surgir nos últimos anos
if i thought hearing the studio version was startlingly beautiful, this was that on a completely different planet. my mouth was open the whole time. you're all fucking incredible
All the comments here truly represent what I'm feeling from this performance. Can't say it any better.
This is the real deal. Very sincere, honest, and raw music.
Makes ya love being human!
I feel a bond with everybody who cries when they hear this.
I love this band. They are so talented and amazing musicians but so raw and unchecked and not pretentious. I love Adrianne for her beauty in her vocals, but also the ugly in them. If you have never had the opportunity to be a frontman or sing in front of people it’s probably the most cathartic thing I’ve ever done and I highly recommend it.
It's just the way that guitar sounds haunted and melodic.
Adrianne seriously went for it- absolutely incredible!! Hoping to catch these guys on tour soon!
Lenker rocks the hell out of the solo once them headphones come off… Love it!
this song is RAW, LIQUID POWER

This is impeccable. The passion, the sound, the harmony...the melody. Best band on this godforsaken planet. Stay safe out there.
I'm picturing Doug Martsch listening to this with a small smile of deep admiration.

Raw power. Havent played this in quite a while, I played it again and I get goosebumps, again, like the very first time I heard of this live version..
No need of fake shit
Only pure talent
This is wow!
This song is dangerous
This song somehow conveys all the emotions wrapped up in 2020 so far.
my absolute favourite video in the world wide web
I love this song's energy. I think the simple title beautifully captures the intense power that rejecting permanence can bring us. Though the lyrics are largely opaque and haphazard, the one theme drawn throughout is that you cannot, no matter how strong the impulse, reduce life to any 'one' thing. We go through many states, experiences, emotions, and thoughts as we live, but by refusing to draw too much on any one of them, we find another truth. The song is dark, moody, strong, as it shows us we must take apart to reveal. The beauty and depth of the music is in its revelation that through destruction we find something deeper...
This band consistently sounds better live than they do in their albums... and they sound great on their albums.
I don't even want to hear the studio version. It will never hold up to this. Guess I'm a Big Thief fan, now.
it's great too tbf
Love her passion, singing and the guitars. P90's for the win.

Just listened to this song like 10 times in different performances and it keeps making me cry. This is probably my favorite. Better than the studio version, so much raw emotion at the end.
There's something to be said for a song that can bring you to tears every efing time you hear it.
I cry just reading the comments.
I really appreciate how the whole crew is really good at live. Adrianne and the band members, and also the mixing engineers
Well that’s how you sing a god damned song. I’ve always really loved the guitar playing on their records as well. Ever notice how dude isn’t playing all the time or sometimes not a lot when he does? Me too. Genius. Like a less trigger happy marc ribot.
Loud Spirits loop daddy’s by himself. He probably feels like he needs to layer the fuck out of something for it to be valid. He makes some stripped down songs from time to time. Either way he’s awesome. And this is a kick ass song.
Buck appears to play less and less over time.
Mythic ! all these musical emotion in one word
this is my favorite big thief video to date. the energy they emit as a band is unlike any other.
This is such a powerful song. This performance is absolutely devastating and beautiful. It always makes me tear up.
The stuff Buck is doing on the guitar is other worldly. He’s playing a completely different instrument.
I can't describe how much I love this.
my heart explodes with love for Big Thief a thousand times over
I'm cranking the volume on my PC up to 60 and it still isn't enough for this monster of a song.
I don’t even think this is an exceptionally written song but this is an example of how an incredibly moving performance can elevate a song to another level of pure art.
This is my new favorite song. The intensity of the emotion is incredible. I've been listening on repeat all day.
First video on UA-cam that I watched in 2020. On Dec 31, 2029, I'll be proud of that choice.
Both of their albums make up (some of) the best music of 2019. Easily.
Adrianne is the best to have ever done it
I've watched this I don't know how many times, but I'm usually so hypnotised that I never notice the crew member running past around 2 minutes in.
NOT THE ENERGY REELING
How have I been missing out on so much?
This is mindblowing.
I watch this daily as a form of free therapy.
Thank you Big Thief for standing up against racism, apartheid and oppression.
Can't wait for this to hit a million views!
this is honestly sent more goosebumps down my spine in five minutes than i've gotten my entire life!
This whole song sounds like the feeling in someone's head who is only just holding in an intense anxiety from exploding out into the world and absolutely crippling them. But their doing it. Their keeping it in; if only slightly and temporarily.
They played this song when I saw them in Detroit and it felt like it lasted a good 10 minutes, this is the only recording I've found so far that matches that same intensity. Great mix

Don’t have a lot of gin and listen to this song.
I broke down. Especially the screaming part. Idk. I really needed it. Just a sense of an emotional outburst that needed to be sung.

I can't stop coming back to this performance. That guitar tone is unbelievable, and the way she channels it into that soul-searing solo is pure rock'n'roll art. This performance is my go-to whenever I hear people griping about how rock music isn't what it used to be.
I love her voice. The high end screaming is awesome. If you’ve ever performed as a singer then you know the place that you get to as she did before and during that guitar solo. Amazing performance!
