    Can’t agree more. I’m riding a Triumph bobber and I used to ride it in a ‘relaxed’ position because it’s a cruiser (or at least supposed to be) and believe that’s how you ride a cruiser. And I would feel quite awkward every time I tried to turn the bike. So I started to apply this technique, which I happened to learn on my previous bike DRZ400sm. It changed everything. Now the bike feels much lighter and more nimble.

    An EASY test to see the effect of elbow position. (Requires a pushbike/MTB).
    Put a rider on a pushbike, Feet down. holding the handlebars with arms straight. Tell them to hold the bars tight but relaxed arms...
    Grab the front wheel with a hand in front and back and wobble the wheel (as hard as you can within the ability of your "rider").
    Their shoulders 'Should' be thrown back and forth with the action of the wheel, moving their upper body with it.
    Now same again but with elbows at their kidneys... result should be less, but if you're lucky they will bump into themselves at least once.... and it won't look relaxed....
    Now once more... but get them to have a pose like "Elbows on a Dirt Bike" @ (00:04) above...
    This time their forearms should behave as violently as the front wheel, but if they obeyed the "relaxed arms" their shoulders and body should be still.
    It's a LOT easier to show this to someone than put it in words....
    I've ridden road/trail/mtb bikes since the 80's and was only ever mediocre... but have hit some violent unexpected obstacles on the mtb/trailbikes, and as long as you have the elbows out and stay with the bike, you usually get out the other side (staying with the bike doesn't work as well on an MTB.. things happen a little quicker as I found out 20yr ago riding an MTB on a downhill track and rode on the front wheel with brakes into a corner like you can on a trail bike... (superman impression ensued))

    I’m having a lot of tension in my back after I’ve been riding more than 20ish minutes especially if we’re on twisties. Would my body or foot positioning be affecting this? I would love to hear to dig into this topic it’s something I’m just sort of figuring out on my own.

    • @hartthur
      @hartthur 2 роки тому +1

      How are your commands setup ? Maybe your handlebars are too wide, too opened, your footpegs also may make you sit too high ? Or is it the reach from your seatpost to the bar that is too long ? On top of that, how is your physical condition ? Maybe you'll have to get a "bike fit" for your motorcycle ;)

    • @ereHeuqibmazoM
      @ereHeuqibmazoM 2 роки тому

      @@hartthur I’m in extremely good condition wise I regularly complete in mma comps. It could be the lean angle perhaps it’s too harsh of a bend on my lower back. I’ve been toying around with my seating position and I’ve found a couple of angles that relieve it. I’m getting the sense that perhapsi should visit a dr about it though could be something underlying it only just began this year.

      Are you consciously holding the tank hard with your knees? I find when I'm riding hard, the small things like that I forget and end up using my arms to stabilize and help me throw my body around the bike.

    To be fair, on a sport bike with clip-ons you can't grab the bars straight on because your wrists will hit the tank, lol. Coming from a dual sport and jumping on my buddies ZX10r I figured that shit out real fast. Hold it like a screwdriver.

    Can you talk about legs sometime? I see professional riders on dirt tracks sticking out their legs but it seems highly dangerous for a normal person to do that, with a locked knee. There must be some science behind it.

    • @MikeonBikes
      @MikeonBikes  2 роки тому

      It is primarily to avoid getting the foot caught between the peg & ground. It slightly moves some mass forward, hard to say how much real impact this has to front grip, but it may have some impact.
      Most dirt riders wear knee braces to help minimize knee injuries, that can arise from example dabbing the foot in the dirt to avoid a fall.
      In general sticking the foot out is not all that dangerous.
      There is no reason for street riders to stick their foot out.

    • @LxAdventure
      @LxAdventure 2 роки тому

      In trail bike you can just sit on the tank while kick your foot outwards while your hip is intact with the tank. Just don't dangle, it looks like a broken leg. In street bike and sport bike we tend to push the peg down. But in trail we push the bike down with counter steering

    If you ride a race replica {GXSR, CBR, R1/R6, ZXR6/ZXR10}, then do the following:
    0. get Lee Parks' book: Total Control
    1. go to Chapter 12: Body Positioning
    2. go to page 111: 10 Steps to Proper Cornering
    3. If you simply (do one thing) drop↓ the inside elbow straight downward↓, then the following steps will happen automatically that is without thinking:
    a) Step 3: Push Outside Grip
    b) Step 5: Look Through Turn
    c) Step 6: Relax Outside Grip
    d) Step 7: Push Inside Grip
    Note: Have a simple technique for Step 2: Pre-position body.
    e) Your upper torso (shoulders, head) will automatically (no thinking) move→ inside the centerline┆→ of the bike, drop↓ downward↓, and point→ towards the turn.
    f) Your inside hand will automatically relax on the grip and automatically assume the screwdriver grip.
    g) Your inside elbow will automatically point→ towards the turn.
    If you do not believe me, then get someone to film you dropping↓ the inside elbow downward↓, no one, then fine do as I did get a large enough mirror and station it to the inside when you simply drop↓ your inside elbow downward↓, you will see your reflection, now, analyze your posture, trust me, it will be spot on╾without thinking╾every single time.

      @@jeffestrada6857 Jeff, if you are sincere and ride a race replica, then do this:
      0. sit on your bike in your riding posture
      1. look straight ahead
      2. drop either left or right elbow straight downward
      With only one movement, I have taught you (without thinking) what others teach in 5 or 6 steps. As a beginner rider, you have too many instructions in your head, which complicates your learning curve. I have made push steering and cornering as simple as possible: 1 movement. When I asked were you sincere, I meant are you open to new ways of doing things? If yes, then test my one-step technique to answer whether proper body posture results again and again without fail or not. Just test it, Jeff, less than one minute is necessary to convince you.
