Dude, I’m just getting into 6.5cm loading, and this was super helpful. Been loading 308, 556, and 300blk for years. But, somehow, I was really misled by friends on the 6.5. Thanks a lot for the tips
Thanks for the video...I assume you'd tumble the brass after sizing-especially since you lube'd the inside of the case neck. I know its a very broad overview but seems like all the key steps should be mentioned. Controlling headspace, neck tension, and concentricity could be mentioned but not shown. Same with less universal practices like annealing, neck turning, etc. This would be valuable to someone new to reloading. Thank you!
I tryed going up the powder scale to find my nodes . I just returned from the shooting range for seating depth .man that system works great I'm a beleaver! Great info .
just a little tip. For those who use presses and separate primer tools, Using a small magnet with "L" or "S" stickers helps you remember the last configuration of the press or tool. Great for those who use the Forster Co-Ax press which has "S" and "LS" plates with small and large ends.
I always place my loaded rounds in the LE Wilson case gauge to double check sizing to ensure the rounds will chamber. It is a must to reduce feed issues.
Im not sure if you've ever wondered why primer companies store their primers isolated in the package, but dumping them all into a bin like that is asking for issues if one was ever to detonate.
Lots of medium-high-end goodness on that bench. LE Wilson is the best at what they do and they are certainly aware of that. Buy once, cry once and you can't go wrong with this set up!
Man, I'm getting ready to reload my 6.5 creedmoor and so glad I found this basic video of yours...concise and to the point. You primed, then trimmed, is it OK to trim THEN prime? On to your 10 shot load vid!
I have always prepped the case (sized, de-prime and trimmed) and THEN cleaned it to remove all traces of lube rather than cleaning, lubing and loading. I'm interested in your comments about going about it in this order rather than the order you're doing it.
Hello community, Gavin, another awesome video. Thank you. I've watched several videos by you, as well as others. I think I'm ready to start reloading. I own several handguns and rifles that I want to start reloading. It appears the steps are the same however, where is my best source to find information and supplies? For example, I own a 6.5 PRC and I know there are differences between Creedmoor, PRC and Grendel. However, I don't really know the differences. I just know I was told, "Oh, make sure you buy 6.5 PRC because it is different." Any pointers are welcome. Thank you.
Hi! I’m a fan of your channel. Recently reloading 6.5 Creedmoor for my Tikka T3x Tac A1, but have a fundamental question, primers. It’s kind of a split opinion on large rifle primers going cci250 VS cci200. What’s your opinion? Recommend Magnum on some powders?? I’m reloading 123, 140, 147 grains and have R17, Hybrid 100, H4350 and Superformance at home. Kindly appreciate your expertise. Keep up the excellent work!!
Marcos Cancel I have the same question. He’s not the only reloader that went with a small primer. I wonder why? All of the factory ammo I’ve looked at all has large prime. I see you are using cci primer. Isn’t that like a military grade primer that is a bit hard to prevent bump fire? Is there any advantage of using a hard primer? Thanks
Small primers are safer, and originally, it was recommended to Hornady to go with 58,000 piezo pressure, but they went with 62,000, knowing absolute redline was a little over 63,000. That’s why some want the small primer, but in cold weather, there are known failures with the small primer. The best solution would seem to be a slow burning powder, like H4350 or similar, with the large rifle primer, and going conservative with the charge weight in grams. Start with minimum and work up slowly until good accuracy or max load is reached. There is a favored distance off the lands, maybe .040”, but it varies from each barrel and chamber.
That seating die did not leave a ring on the bullet? I just reloaded my first round today and my rcbs die left a ring on my 140 GR eld. I only assume it will be worse with 147gr elds.
I have a .260 browning A bolt micro hunter. The gun has a 1in 10 twist. It shoots factory loads Remington core-lokt 140 grain really good. I had a friend of mine load me up some nosler lr 142 grain with 43 grain w760. Gun doesn't like them. Is the twist in the barrel that's the problem ? If so what bullet and load do you recommend. This is for hunting Whitetails. Thanks
Winchester powder isn’t always ideal. Most reloaders claim great accuracy with H4350, and not too hot. Also, you need to know how far off the lands to be. This cartridge is sensitive to that, but every rifle is unique. Your load may be too hot for ideal accuracy.
Idea: CBTO process for bullet jump into the lands. I.E. a distance from/to the lands video with an explanation of why this might be good for precision re-loaders. Bullet Comparator demonstration.
I'm old school...I hand load for bolt action hunting rifles with a 1972 RCBS JR2 single stage press. I use RCBS case lube and pad...been using that for over 30 years and never a stuck case....why is this no longer popular for case lube? Would you get a more precise neck by using an expander mandrel instead of the expander ball in resizing die?
Do you have a video on bullet seating depth for 6.5 Creedmoor or any other caliber? I would like to see a video of the do’s and don’t to get the bullet close to the lands.
Josh Davis Why would do a lot of the things shown here?! Priming before the case prep is done (including getting that lube off and out of the case?!) 🙄 ... yes, I know this is an old vid.
Do you recommend cleaning the brass after trimming/deburring before loading charges? I'm just curios about residual brass chunks after that process. I'm new to reloading and really appreciate your videos.
Can you speak to full length sizing versus neck sizing on the 6.5 Creedmoor? I’m assuming you full length case sized because it is new brass and will then neck size once it’s fire formed in your Ruger Precision Rifle? In general, do you neck only size rounds for bolt guns and full length size for semi auto’s or mag fed calibers/guns?
Great video. Ht kind of velocity did you get? Do you use lighter loads than u shoot on your videos? I'm at @ 41.5 of h4350 and not over max. Thx again. Have you tried reloader 16 yet
Great how to step, since I have not started to reload yet. What does all the equipment you used cost? Plus I presume you would need a tumbler to clean the brass? So that would be another cost too. Thank you.
Joe Jr an RCBS kit is really cheap. It has everything you need basically besides a case trimmer dies shell holder and a tumbler. Hornadys reloading kit is overpriced tbh. You get a bunch of plastic and a crappy scale you’ll change after the first use. Go with rcbs with the balance beam scale. You’ll probably make an initial investment depending on what you get. The lee kit seems amazing and it’s like $130. With dies a cheap tumbler shell holders and trimmer you’ll probably be looking at $300-400. Depending on what to yuse
I have a Dillon XL650 which is the progressive standard and I paid about $500-600 I forgot the exact price. Im 15 but i don’t like cheap stuff. Especially when your life depends on it . Don’t cheap out on the scale man. Can’t go wrong with a balance beam. Personally recommended Dillon as well. I had an issue with mine sent it in and got a new one
All of the equipment in this video would probably put you up around $1000 give or take a bit and would be an awesome setup for precision rifle reloading. If money is tight you can get started reloading great quality ammo for considerably less than that. For a beginner on a tight budget the Lee Breech lock challenger kits are good. For a little more money and a lot more capability I would recommend the Lee precision classic turret press kits, they are a lot of press for the money and I wish I had known about them when I started reloading.
Great video Gavin...i know it is just me and dumbness, but how can i find the "next video" where you go through the load development process for the 6,5CM? Thanks
Figure approx. $800 - here's a complete list of what you'll need! ultimatereloader.com/getting-started-reloading/what-you-need-to-load-rifle-ammunition/
Hey Gavin, are you going any true precision loads for your 6.5 bolt rifle (assuming these are for an AR platform or you wouldn't be worried about SAAMI spec) using fire formed brass and only sizing the neck and bumping the shoulder if necessary? That's more what I load/shoot with my Forster and my 6.5 creedmoor rounds.
A lot of competition shooters full length size for their bolt action rifle shooting. Most articles I have read where the authors have tested full length sizing vs neck sizing side by side saw no benefits in accuracy or brass life with neck sizing only and tended to prefer full length sizing because it mitigated feeding issues.

What about primer pocket uniforming, flash hole deburring, bullet seating depth? Also, neck bushing or F/L bushing dies to prevent excessive working of the brass over a usually crooked expander resulting in excessive run-out and also measuring run-out? Not precision reloading at all just a standard reloading video.
You're assuming your audience has the context for all the dies, etc. They don't necessarily. How, for example, do you set up the die correctly? Why doesn't anyone include that in their videos? if people (like me) are new and don't have a full understanding of those bits, how will they diagnose if something isn't right?
Good video but you missed a lot of steps involved in the reloading process that a beginner needs to know. It’s not as simple as placing the bullet and pressing it into the case without speaking about COAL or showing the step where you removed the case lube from the case and case neck.
lonz73 Appreciate the feedback but I think you missed the point, this video is about showing the process ay a high level end to end- all of the minute details are covered and many of the other videos I’ve published. :)
Good Video, but please try to change your hands. Your left back of hand covers the sight to the things you are doing. Maybe a little less fast all steps. I am a beginner as well. Greatings from Vienna, Austria, Europe. Thank you
You don't bump the neck. You either FL size and bump the shoulder a tiny amount, or you neck size for whatever neck tension your bushing is for, then have the option to run it through a body die if you want to bump the shoulder back after neck sizing.

Josue Guzman All I wanted to say was that I dont WANT a vifeo on this but I WISH there would be one. I am not forcing him to do it but i would be happy to see that video.
Josue Guzman Man you americans are lucky to have .50. Max in europe without a specialty high caliber permit is 338. And even for that you need a bunch of paperwork

Less than buying loaded ammo if you are into shooting . That forster press is slick no threading and turning in dies ,nice .
About 1200 doll

Exactly, once this is over i will imvest about 4k in equipment and supplies, my coworker says pre corona his 556 rounds came about 10c a round
What parts where used for this reloading setup. I would love to produce the quality you just produced.
A lot of us aren't too sure where to start, is there a forum or somewhere that lists what is a full set up? Love the videos great content!

I got a cartridge stuck in my small base die. Am I not lubing enough?
I want to get the whole set up ~ where can I get that set up and how much for the setup ~ thanks for the video
Are you using a bushing for the micrometer seating die? If so what kind?
I know nothing about reloading .
Is a Dillon 550 sufficient for reloading for load development?
I inherited a Dillon 550.

Random Dude It’s all here in the write up! ultimatereloader.com/2018/02/09/precision-6-5-creedmoor-step-by-step/
Made it look easy
In this video is the Brass New or Once fired?
Shouldn't you trim the case before you prime it?
How much does this reloading set up cost??
No primer pocket uniforming/cleaning etc?
Can you use a 6mm Creedmoor rifle and swap out the barrel chambered in.243 win?

whooops...i think i found it. :-)
Do you anneal after each firing?

Hey Gavin, are you going any true precision loads for your 6.5 bolt rifle (assuming these are for an AR platform or you wouldn't be worried about SAAMI spec) using fire formed brass and only sizing the neck and bumping the shoulder if necessary? What are the chances of you digging into the world of 270 Winchester?
Is there any difference in using a small primer vs a large primer for 6.5 Creedmoor?
Yes, some differences, discussed in detail here :www.starlinebrass.com/articles/download-65-guide/
Hey Gavin, thanks for the video. I wanted to ask if it is neccesary to neck size my brass. I am too, trying to reload 6.5 Creedmoor.

Oh brother is the 6.5 PRC dead please do a reloading video before I switch my barrel to 6.5 creedmoor
Never seated the primer!
Good video but you missed a lot of steps involved in the reloading process that a beginner needs to know. It’s not as simple as placing the bullet and pressing it into the case without speaking about COAL or showing the step where you removed the case lube from the case and case neck.

Chris V. I hope to, in the near term for belted magnum I think 7 mm will be first…

Don't trust any COAL in Books or loading data. Measure always with an unloaded Cartridge in your specific rifle. I load about 15 caliber.
Gavin,
Almost complete but you might just want to run it on Sinclair ball concentrically gauge to show the accuracy of the dies and the press. (All I've used for a long time is the Coaxial or, L.E.W. inline dies/press.)
For those new to loading and or the anal retentive freaks. Like me..Lol

Craig Arnold Thanks Craig- that’s exactly what I was going to say :) As I mentioned in the video I have other videos that cover all of those details.
Do you need to crimp 6.5?
No
I went by the Lyman book exactly, and my rounds won't chamber
Are you using a SAAMI-spec case gauge?
Did you know your setup is in the Starline Cartridge Guide for 6.5 Creedmoor? You're on page 9. www.starlinebrass.com/media/2138/complete-65-creedmoor-guide-reloading-65-creedmoor-ballistics.pdf
