welcome back to Songs From Home, episode 40: The Times They Are A-Changin'
I’ve been singing this to myself a lot this week and decided to make it this episode’s song…we played it every night on the Four Voices Tour with Joan Baez and The Indigo Girls back in 2017 and for many of the mcc tours that followed and it always made me stand up straighter.
It’s a perennial, a classic, a song that has belonged to generations of marchers and believers, and it will forever be one of the great songs of the protest music canon.

Episode 40.....you give everyone so much with Songs from Home. Who would of ever thought it would turn into such a long tour? I’m sure you’ve gained much from being at home for so long....reassurance of seasons marking time, loneliness encroaching solitude, new routines different from the 30+ years of performing. The strength in a community of friends creating a spiritual awakening of harmony, joy and connection. Through this pandemic, political climate, and the loss of friends/loved ones to covid you encourage and lift people all over the world. You calm fears, touch hearts by nurturing a virtual community, unifying it with honest care, by opening your home with empathy, compassion and fur babies welcoming the weary. Depression has been my Constant Companion for many of my 67 years, but that’s ok. I manage it pretty well, with a lot of work. After all you are doing for others, I hope in these new times you have a support system that helps you not only stay strong, stay safe, stay well, and stay mighty. But, also nurtures you, listens, is there for you unconditionally. You deserve the best life has to offer. In fact, on many days you are the best life has to offer.

God evening Sherry, it’s been a year later as I stroll through Ms. Mary’s Songs once again and reread the kind thoughtful words of all her fans. I too like the PP&M version and have played it over and over again on vinyl and disc. They were my first “Rock Concert” when I was 16 living in the D.C. area in 1964 and Ms. Mary was my last concert in Northern Wisconsin 2018. I’ve bookended my concerts between them. All these years later and the words were still prophetic in 2021. Blessings and peace and may you sing along with them to your personal Joy.
I don't know if you'll ever see this Mary but I want you to know that you are such an inspiration to me everyday. God bless you and White Kitty and Angus. You are so loved!

Thank you so much. I needed that today-and most days, for that matter. Indeed the times are “a changing.” Even more so now than when that song was written. We are living in troubled times, and it just keeps coming. I am sad, and I am frightened, and I am weary. As always Top Of The Class, enjoyed your new album, play it most days. I still recall the first time I saw you in the UK, the Reading Hexagon in mid 1990's and then later Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith.
Dear Ms. Mary, How a porch light on in a country house is such a warm welcoming sight. Trees in the front framing your house and accented with the deep blue evening sky behind. While waiting for your next gift to us, your fans, I’ve come across 1960s artists from the folk music scene. Some I know but there were other that were unfamiliar. It was a pleasant visit to the past. Their music is similar to yours in that there is a story in the lyrics. I just finished an hour and a half with Gordon Lightfoot, another artist who’s songs take you along in their story. Like Angus and White Kitty I need to turn in so I’m up for Sunday morning. Amy Reyes Well, thank you for your kind compliment but no I’m not a writer per say. I read and observe and listen and then think of what it is that has drawn my attention. For example, right now with the TV on mute I’m glancing quick looks at the golf tournament in the Dominican Republic. The Atlantic is a rich deep blue, the sky a paler blue and the grass so green. Then I think of the other side of this island, Haiti and the contrast between the two. I try to put myself there and write whatever comes to mind. I believe anyone can do this and I don’t think of myself as so special. You impress me that you would be as good a writer as you compliment me. Thank you, again, for your kind words.

A tip of my hat to all of the troubadors, those with us and those who are gone, who were part of the late 50s early 60s "folk revival" movement. That song does seem to be an iconic representative of the movement. And a bow to all the young people out there (and that includes Mary as Joy and I are her elders).
Please say a prayer for Joy who is recovering in the hospital after surgery to allow her to walk without crutches cain or wheelchair.

I do love autumn. Shadows fall differently, a distance train has a resonant sound, squirrels are burying winter treasures all over my yard, and the scent of my Hazelnut coffee fills my home. I swear you have written a piece for every mood, every emotion. When you sing to us from your home you just seem like a close and loving friend.
