When you say "own" you need to bring up the name Julie Gold: she wrote the song. Too many people out there wrongly assume the person singing the song also wrote it.

Such a brilliant singer-songwriter has left us today, and we are left with stories and music, oh such beautiful music of this artist who had her finger on the pulse of something wonderful. This dear soul didn't seem to think she was talented and just fell into it somehow. Well, we were so fortunate to have her 'fall into this career'. Her collaborations over the years with fellow artists and orchestras I won't forget anytime soon. I remember this up-and-coming young woman who took to Letterman that evening. That voice, and at the time without guitar in hand.....quite a gift. We shan't forget this treasure, nor her music. Heavy hearts Aug 13, 2021, but so thankful for all that she left us with...where would we be without hers?

When I first heard 'from a distance' I rushed out and bought Nanci's latest album, and all my friends scoffed an said 'she's a county singer!!' But I didn't care, a great song is a great song. I gave that tape to a Dutch friend of mine in 1991 and he, as much as I am, is still in love with it now. Nanci went far beyond the limits of music genres. Her voice and her beautiful songs were given to everybody with enough love to want them. God, please look after her, she gave so much.

I heard this song in 1988 London on radio 4 and instantly fell in love with the song. I rang BBC Radio next day and asked about the song. and bought the 45 single in Leicester square way before Bette M releases it. I can pick a hit

I love her. I remember being so upset that Bette Midler released it. She OWNS this song!

I love the passion that she gives this song and she always did and even more so here at the time when we supported Iraq & Saddam in their war with Iran ( hard to keep track)❤️

Nanci is simply majestic in this song. It is the best version I’ve heard. Such expression at every word. She, truly is a legend.

Rest in peace Nancy Griffith. Dear Soul, I was looking for your voice singing From a Distance. I first heard you sing it live on Austin City Limits. I remember standing alone, in my living room, hearing the lyric, and asking "who is seeing the world blue and green, and the snow capped mountains white?" and the song answered the question. Later I learned Julie Gold was the songwriter, reading the liner notes from Julie's album, she told playing the piano in her apartment as the sun set in New York City. in the late 80's. Letterman invited Nancy Griffith to be his musical guest, on the first anniversary of 911, touched, blessed by your music, your voice, good company, lovely companion.

    From a distance
The world looks blue and green
And the snow capped mountains white
    From a distance
    The ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight
    From a distance
    There is harmony
And it echoes through the land
    It's the voice of hope
    It's the voice of peace
It's the voice of every man
    From a distance
    We all have enough
And no one is in need
    And there are no guns,
    No bombs, and no disease
    No hungry mouths to feed
    From a distance
    We are instruments
    Marching in a common band
    Playing songs of hope
    Playing songs of peace
They are the songs of every man
    God is watching us
    God is watching us
    God is watching us
    From a distance
    From a distance
    You look like my friend
Even though we are at war
    From a distance
    I just cannot comprehend
    What all this fighting's for
    From a distance
    There is harmony
And it echoes through the land
And it's the hope of hopes
    It's the love of loves
It's the heart of every man
    It's the hope of hopes
    It's the love of loves
This is the song for every man
    God is watching us
    God is watching us
    God is watching us
    From a distance
    Oh, God is watching us
    God is watching
    God is watching us
    From a distance

This showed up unexpectedly on my timeline. Anton on drums. I like loud and noisy Rock & Roll. That contrasted with my love for her music but not now. Seeing her with a member of Frehley's Comet lets me understand that all music is connected. if it moves you by sound or lyrics, then it's all very good. God Bless The Music makers and God Bless Nanci Griffith, and Anton Fig too!!! RIP Nanci.
