I put a small, but functional vintage table on one end, it has a drawer, a shelf in the middle and a small enclosed storage are with a door. It's perfect for that spot. It's the same colour as the bench, ties them together visually. I also added a louvered screen, behind the bench so it felt more " finished ", and can be used to prop up pretty pillows for on the bench. I think the bench is a good choice, I put down the grocery totes I use, when I come in from the Market, it's used for taking off shoes, just nice to have that " landing spot ". :)

Great ideas in this video. I agree with you. For me, I always have blankets in my recliner for the dog and I. I need to work on the living room. Thank you for sharing!
Way back when in 1984 the first thing I bought for my first apartment was a coffee table - because it was awesome. I still have it, its a hollywood regency rams head coffee table and I still love it. The second thing I bought was a sofa and the third was a rug. I don't have the sofa or the rug but will always have and treasure my showstopper of a coffee table. Back then I laughed that I did not have a couch but I had a coffee table!
I know exactly what you’re referencing Evelyn- I love that table! I have an 80’s style regency brass + glass coffee table I still love (even though I got rid of all the other glass, this one remains 😍) 🙌🏻
Awesome video as always love you so much you always give me amazing inspiration I purchased my first home one year ago and I am also totally blind and with your help and also your videos and your comments and emails have all been excellent and very informative. My home is still a work in progress but it has been coming together beautifully. So regarding the living room I spoke to you before regarding layering a area rug over wall-to-wall carpeting and you said it was OK to do so I have not yet been able to find the right area rug made of silk and wool that would complement the colors in my living room as I told you I am doing gold black and white so far my living room is almost complete. My living room is a pretty good size with 12 foot ceilings I have white wall-to-wall carpeting and I have a beautiful Sarausky crystals Gold chandelier over the seating area I also have recess LED lighting throughout the living room also I purchased two large white leather sofas that are facing each other with a lounge chair on the end of it facing a 80 inch television mounted on the wall above a fireplace I did some beautiful drapery black with white shear and gold hardware and crystal finneals. I’ve been wanting to purchase a coffee table and tables and a sofa table but I was looking for a marble with gold I have not had much luck with that I ordered some from Macy’s on their website when it arrived after spending thousands of dollars they were nothing like the photo described to me on the website and a lot of the marble was discolored so I had to return it for a restocking fee so I’m still on the hunt for some beautiful coffee table and end tables and sofa table any recommendations for something marble with the gold would be beautiful. No I need eight professional like yourself and a woman’s recommendation on what else I should do regarding fresh plants or flowers in the living room and I was also thinking about putting a 6 foot mirror on one of the walls in the living room with a gold frame any advice or suggestions on that also I know my walls are looking pretty plain they are just white which matches all the other white but I would like to hang up some beautiful artwork or paintings would you suggest just black-and-white artwork. Any suggestions where I can finish up my beautiful living room would be greatly appreciated and I want to wish you a very happy and blessed early Mother’s Day to you and all the other mothers out there thank you again
Hi Thomas! Great to hear from you! There are a ton of art and plant consultants that come to your home, assess your needs, and bring you a variety of options to fill your space. I would use Google or Yelp to find them locally. If you’re doing it yourself, I loved Minted.com or Etsy.com for artwork. Color is up to you, but since your space is predominantly black/white, I would love to see some color in the space 😍 Brass and marble coffee tables can be found on 1st dibs and Chairish if you’re going for vintage. I also love Burke Decor and France and Son. Good luck and thank you for always watching and commenting 🙏🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu my pleasure I enjoy all your presentations which are so inspirational - I always look forward to your next one😊 - I’m considering wallpapering my hallway and stairwell to make it look like a place not just a thorough fair - it cuts the house in half so to make it more inclusive I thought a wallpaper with very strong colours and huge flora pattern like Nightfall ll from Temple and Webster - you may be able to look it up - 🙂
Had to laugh when you mentioned the day care feel and the living room not feeling complete without an area rug. Enjoyed this video, as with ALL your videos. I really enjoy you too, Julie.
I agree with your list. My friend doesn't have a coffee table nor rug and her home looks "unfinished" and doesn't feel welcoming. Also, I mix faux plants with real live plants since I don't have a green thumb. Lol
My husband & I are married 36 years now. We have a couch & Loveseat with an end table in between. We’ve never had a coffee table & find we don’t need one. He also has discoloration on his legs with delicate skin. He doesn’t need to kick into a coffee table. Eating in that room is usually not done as we don’t want any chance of spilling food in there. We eat at our table in the Kitchen. The end table is big enough for a beverage for each of us. 😉
Love these videos!! It’s fun to listen to while I work :) I still haven’t ordered my kitchen table too torn to do Seely stain vs a natural stain! It’s stressful to make a big purchase! I give you so much credit for making things flow, you are awesome!!
Hi Julie I think you covered everything and then some. I have no room for the coffee table but I did put end tables and a back table. They work well except it’s a little hard to put a drink behind you. I agree about the rug entirely but I started with the rug knowing the one I wanted and my color scheme went from that. I would like to see this format again with a den and how to work that big screen tv in the decor especially with lighting issues in the den with a tv. You look beautiful. See you next week. 🤗🥰
This is my first time watching any of your videos. The content is well-organized, comprehensive, and has beautiful pictures to demonstrate everything. You are great. I plan to watch all of your videos.
@@JulieKhuu OK! Home Office, Guest Room, Kids Room/organization for toys. Not so fun in my mind but any tips for Laundry Room, Basement? These are all of my current trouble spots!
We haven't had a coffee table for years. It's just one more thing to stub my toe on. We also like to have some open space to dance or exercise. It's also hard to vacuum around. I would like to get some nesting tables that slide flush with the furniture and can be pulled out and pushed in as needed.
Thank you again for such a great video and timely advice. 👍 I'm currently waiting on my furniture pieces ( boo delays) for my LV space and can wait to finish putting the space together .
Hi, Julie. Oh, how I would love to get a nice area rug for my living room. My dog still soils the space sometimes, and I'm really scared that it will be clean for like a day an half. So sad about it, but we might need to wait until he is fully trained - hopefully some day 😕 thanks for the wonderful tips, as always. Hugs from Prague 🥰
I've been on the hunt for the perfect sofa to replace my ugly brown one (husband bought it). And I have been taking my time hunting. But in the meantime, I purchased a velvety stretchy dusty blue slipcover. I was really pleasantly surprised at the look and fit of it. It completely covers every inch of the sofa and tucks into the sides of each cushion. I know how people feel about slipcovers. But this one really doesn't look like one. Now, I feel like I can take my time to find the perfect sofa. Also want a new, larger area rug.
All of these are essential TO ME 😂 But not fundamental when you’re starting with a blank slate Celina. Some of us get paralyzed at the accessories and styling stage, too many decisions to make! 😅
I totally agree with all five but I skipped a rug/carpet altogether because of both young kids and dog. The room is small enough that I don’t miss it. Would love a 5 things for the dining room.
I JUST LOVE EVERYTHING IN THIS VIDEO! Julie, you're a genius! And btw, my very best wishes to you and your family: a baby is on the way! You are a beautiful pregnant woman. All the very best to all of you ❤
This segment is an excellent resource. I have open plan with small dining and lounge areas. Behind my 3 seater sofa is my dining table, 80cm apart. The 2 seater sofa is adjacent, forming an L shape. My focal point opposite the the smaller sofa is the bookshelf, and opposite the main sofa is the TV unit and wall art. Which of these two focal points would be considered the primary? As you have highlighted in all your videos, scale and proportion is ground zero. Thank you for sharing your knowledge Julie.
I have can lights in the ceiling but I don’t like to turn them on. They definitely make the great room bright in the evening hours but I prefer the ambient lights from end tables and floor sconces to light the room.

Hi Julie, I have recently started to follow your videos, they are super helpful. Thank you and keep up the amazing work :) I have a stupid question- can I place a console table in front of a large floor mirror ? The alternate could be console and a wall hung mirror of course .. would appreciate your guidance and thoughts … best, J
Absolutely J. If the console is leggy, you can show off the floor mirror more. If not, then you’re hiding half the body which could work either way. I’m assuming you’re reusing something you already have, or else a wall mirror above a console would suffice
I don’t have one dedicated to stairwells, but you can find some styling information in the “Ways to refresh your home in the new year” video Sandra! 👍🏻☺️
Any rules regarding side tables, can they all be different, must it jive with the coffee table.. table lamps placement for the main sofa, where to position the massage chair, etc. Apologies for the barrage of questions
Side tables should coordinate, but definitely NOT match the coffee table. I like lamps placed on a surface closest to an outlet so there are no dangling cords everywhere. Massage chairs should be backed up against a corner wall so you can’t see/walk behind it. Hope that helps Douglas! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Hi Julie, in regards to the coffee table if your living room sectional and accent chairs both came with big square foot rests would you still say u need a coffee table? If so I'd like to see you post a video or picture with living room with both a coffee table and for rest. Thank you
What do you think of a narrow sofa table(4inch wide) behind the sofa that’s placed against the wall ( in a small space) with a lamp and maybe a phone charging station for guests? And a painting on the wall. The room dimensions are 11ft x 8 ft. The room has a balcony that’s opposite the entrance. The room must have a standing piano too ( my musician son’s home).
Hi Julie. Thanks once again for all the great advice you generously share. I have a question - are triangle shaped ceilings a good idea? What I mean is - is better to have the ceiling going right up into a point to the apex of the roof if possible, or is it better Feng Shui to insert a ceiling across the space? Thank you 😊
If I give you the floor plan of my new home living room, can you implement the pieces of furniture to accommodate such space? More particularly, living room and bedroom. Confused because fireplace in the living room is a walkway to the slider doors to backyard. Sofas would be so far back to view TV (mount there already) above fireplace. Thanks

My living room is 24x15. The half by the door is my yoga/workout area. The inside half I set up stereo system but no TV. I have a projection screen when I do want to watch on big screen I’d hook up my ipad.
Overhead lighting is a problem in the evening, usually when lighting is necessary. As humans we evolved with evening lighting (usually a fire or a sunset) at or below eye level. Overhead lighting in the evening depresses melatonin, a hormone that encourages sleep.

We haven't had a coffee table for years. It's just one more thing to stub my toe on. We also like to have some open space to dance or exercise. It's also hard to vacuum around. I would like to get some nesting tables that slide flush with the furniture and can be pulled out and pushed in as needed.
Check out my coffee table roundup video for nesting table resources Jeannie! I have a whole chapter dedicated to this functional and stylish look 👍🏻😊
Thank you again for such a great video and timely advice. 👍 I'm currently waiting on my furniture pieces ( boo delays) for my LV space and can wait to finish putting the space together .
It’ll all be worth it Chauncy 🙌🏻 Been waiting for some cabinets for my DR since Fall last year 😅
You can also use outdoor rugs indoors Monica! They’re much easier to take outside and spray down 👍🏻☺️
Have you considered getting a washable rug? Several companies make them now, even in large sizes. I have two washable runners and I love them.
Enjoyed I agree with the list
Thank you for watching Barbara 🙏🏻☺️
Totally agree ❤️

I've been on the hunt for the perfect sofa to replace my ugly brown one (husband bought it). And I have been taking my time hunting. But in the meantime, I purchased a velvety stretchy dusty blue slipcover. I was really pleasantly surprised at the look and fit of it. It completely covers every inch of the sofa and tucks into the sides of each cushion. I know how people feel about slipcovers. But this one really doesn't look like one. Now, I feel like I can take my time to find the perfect sofa. Also want a new, larger area rug.
That’s a brilliant solution! Too often we’re in a rush to replace something and don’t take the time to source what we truly need/want 🙌🏻
Excellent !
Thank you for watching Ashjar 🙏🏻☺️
Great Ideas, very helpful. Where is the best place in the living room for a large screen TV?
Opposite the space that can fit your longest sofa Sylvia
I agree. Add artwork to the essentials list? Naked walls are really a drag. Thanks for sharing and I hope you're feeling fine during pregnancy :)
All of these are essential TO ME 😂 But not fundamental when you’re starting with a blank slate Celina. Some of us get paralyzed at the accessories and styling stage, too many decisions to make! 😅
@@JulieKhuu Thank you so much for your reply. You're an inspiration. So much to learn :)
I totally agree with all five but I skipped a rug/carpet altogether because of both young kids and dog. The room is small enough that I don’t miss it. Would love a 5 things for the dining room.
Dining room is coming up soon Cristine! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️

Focal point is typically what’s behind the largest sofa or what’s in front of it. In your case, it’s the TV wall Maria. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Loved this video! Can you pl do a video on small dining rooms?
I have one already in the small space series Sharmila. But will definitely tackle dining room hacks next 👍🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu Thank you so much! ❤️🙏🏽

Hi Ms. Julie, love your vlog. I love to decorate but with limited resources.
Thank you for watching Angie! I shop my home all the time, costs nothing at all 👍🏻☺️
Oh my gosh, as new parents, we also replaced our area rug with a rubber play mat! I can't wait for our baby to outgrow it.
It’ll be a few years before we get our living room back David 😂
I have can lights in the ceiling but I don’t like to turn them on. They definitely make the great room bright in the evening hours but I prefer the ambient lights from end tables and floor sconces to light the room.
Love moody lighting, which is why I place all my lighting on dimmers as well ☺️
Julie, could you share where to purchase a lovely curvy couch like yours. I live in Toronto, and have a 600 sq ft condo. Thank you! Love your ideas!
You're a pro!

@@JulieKhuu Wonderful, just working through ideas for the new home .. :) I ll send you pictures when I get there ... thank you again.
Thank you❤️👍🥰
Thank you for watching Myra 🙏🏻☺️
A video on stairwells, please!
I don’t have one dedicated to stairwells, but you can find some styling information in the “Ways to refresh your home in the new year” video Sandra! 👍🏻☺️
Agreed. We need some art too tho
Art always! But not always first 👍🏻☺️
I am avoiding an area rug as I have a small living room & am in the subtropics with timber flooring . Does that seem like the right idea?
Thank you
If you mean a separate ottoman, the answer is yes. Check out my ultimate guide to coffee tables to understand how to measure for this condition Jamar
@@JulieKhuu will do thanks
Can you put an area rug over carpet and the rules for area rugs the same?
Yes. Watch my videos on area rugs for more tips Randal 👍🏻
I love it! Functional and does the job without take a huge footprint 👍
Hi Julie. Thanks once again for all the great advice you generously share. I have a question - are triangle shaped ceilings a good idea? What I mean is - is better to have the ceiling going right up into a point to the apex of the roof if possible, or is it better Feng Shui to insert a ceiling across the space? Thank you 😊
Feng Shui loves a flat, high ceiling Mary. I, myself, live for vaulted ceilings and exposed beams 😍 (which FS hates btw 😅)
@@JulieKhuu Thanks so much for your reply Julie. Best wishes for the baby 🙏🌱
Thanks

Hi Julie, what if one has two focal point, a fire place and a large window view? Which one is prefferable?Thankvyou
The view takes precedence if it’s stunning Mary. That’s a design decision you need to make. Check out my video on how to create a focal wall for more tips! 👍🏻☺️
My living room is 24x15. The half by the door is my yoga/workout area. The inside half I set up stereo system but no TV. I have a projection screen when I do want to watch on big screen I’d hook up my ipad.
You’ve got the function down Jen 🙌🏻
Maybe curtain can be one of the additional items.
Yes! Window treatments can make or break a room for sure Lay 👍🏻
Hi Julie- too bad my narrow townhome does not give me the opportunity to install overhead lighting in my living room space - it has sprinkler’s 😞
Focus on ambient lighting like wall sconces, floor and table lamps Suzie 👍🏻
What about an area rug in a wall to wall carpet already? Especially if they carpet is high end and plush?
I covered this topic in the common design mistakes for area rugs video Tiffany. That would be a design NO. The rug will crush the carpet
Overhead lighting is a problem in the evening, usually when lighting is necessary. As humans we evolved with evening lighting (usually a fire or a sunset) at or below eye level. Overhead lighting in the evening depresses melatonin, a hormone that encourages sleep.
Which is precisely why ALL lighting should be placed on dimmers so you have ultimate control Kristi 👍🏻☺️
Hi Julie thanks for this awesome explanation , waiting for your next video😊
Thank you for watching Preeti 🙏🏻☺️
Our family room ceiling height is approx 18 ft. We need to install a large fan for air circulation to the 2nd floor. Should I get a fan with a light?
That light may be too high for anything other than general lighting so if you have an alternate light source, you may get one without it Megan.
Loved this video again specially we're moving in a new house as our retirement home with my hubby...still looking gorgeous as a few weeks from now you're having a new healthy baby....take care Ms. Julie, keep safe always God Bless
