    While it’s all wonderful advice and it makes sense … I would rather have seen the SAME furniture in a room done the correct way. I’m not about to go out and buy all completely new furniture to make a space nice. I’d rather try to work with what I already HAVE and add accessories.

      ...THANK YOU. ..I have long thought that THIS CONCEPT would be much more helpful, rather than showing " totally different Furniture etc "... !
      I can say with relative certainty that 80 % of Individuals are NOT going to be able to go out and just " Re- purchase different Furniture ".

    I agree about having comfy seating. I used to have a big leather sectional that looked nice but I found uncomfortable. I bought a moss green velvet one and is so much cozier 😊

      Omg yes! I took the back cushions off my leather sofa and added large velvet feather pillows as the back. Took leather covers off the seat cushions and had velvet covers made. So amazingly comfortable I had been getting sciatica from sitting on the leather which doesn’t give way for you!

    Hi Liz, My house was built in 1991 when family room and formal living room were still in vogue so I have both. The room I use most is, of course, my family room. It is very long and relatively narrow compared to the length of the room. A fireplace is at one end and waaay on the other is a set of windows. Floating the furniture in this room, unlike my formal living room, isn't possible because of the width of the room. What I have done is the only thing I could ever figure out to do. The window end of the room, adjacent to the front door, is where I have a wicker sofa under the window flanked by chairs put at an angle toward the sofa. My floors are bamboo and an area rug is under all of the furniture in this part of the family room. The other end of the family room has the fireplace. TV is on one short wall opening into the dining room. To the left of the TV is a chair with hassock. Facing at an angle toward the couch. which is across on the other side of the narrow family room. The couch has end tables on each end and a comfortable chair and hassock also set at a slight angle toward the chair and hassock next to the TV. The wall the couch, etc. is on is a long wall with a stair case behind it. I tried to make this description make sense.😁. I enjoy your channel and am always open to new ideas. Thank you!😊

    Any suggestions to still make a living room look complete for pet owners who cannot have an area rug? This was a good video! Thx!

    • @BalanceRhythm
      @BalanceRhythm  7 місяців тому

      Thanks, Amy! It's my pleasure. Rugs and drapery can be a challenge for pet owners. There are washable ones that could be a solution if you really want one. But you can forgo the rug and just keep a good furniture arrangement with an anchor piece, like a coffee table, something that adds visual weight to help ground the area. Also, check out this video ➡️ua-cam.com/video/D4DD1yu8n7Y/v-deo.html. I think you'll find some good tips there.

    I never truly grasped the concept of a formal living room (which to me is a contradictio in terminis). Why would you spend time and - especially - money for a room that won't be used much, if at all? A family room is the real living room and it should always be cozy.
    Thanks for the tips!
    One question though: is 145cm for the center of art pieces not too low? I mean, I'm 183cm and if the art is hung that low I would have to look down.

    • @BalanceRhythm
      @BalanceRhythm  7 місяців тому

      The 145cm is just a guideline so you can raise or lower it a little according to your taste and comfort. Totally agree about the formal living room but many existing homes have them.

    • @kathleenmckeithen118
      @kathleenmckeithen118 3 місяці тому

      I know. I have a formal living room and a family room because my daughter needed to practice piano and we didn't want that in the family room. It has turned out to be useful, though, it has a big window seat in which I store a lot of things and when Christmas or other family gatherings take place, this room provides a beautiful place to be. Were I to buy or build a house now, I would forego the formal living room but am able to enjoy what I have.😊

    Nice tips. This all makes sense. A question: are there guidelines as to what size living room is best for a sectional? My living room is kind of small and I’m worried a sectional may make it feel even smaller. Also, if I don’t place the sectional or sofa against the wall, how much space between the wall and the back of the furniture is best for a smaller living room? Thanks.

    • @BalanceRhythm
      @BalanceRhythm  7 місяців тому +4

      Thanks, Patricia! Sectionals come in different sizes and configurations so you should be able to find one to fit your space. If the space around the sectional is circulation space 36" is ideal but if the room is very small 24" should be the absolute minimum.

    Do you have any idea how impossible it is to buy slip covers?

    • @BalanceRhythm

      True. It’s not ideal. Much easier to purchase a sofa that’s already slipcovered for the best fit and ease of replacement if necessary.

    My living room is really difficult, with many windows and doors. I have pulled the furniture away from the walls in large part, with an area rug beneath, and it really helps. Oddly, I followed a lot of your tips before seeing your video, so the video gives me confidence in the design methods I've been using instinctually.

    Curved sofas and chairs are very on trend, they look good but sitting on them is so hard....unless they have seat cushions they are out for me. Lots of style over comfort going on but the majority of yr sofas were just 'sink in' and relax, along with feather cushions to the back, always the first thing I want to get right. Thanks for additional tips on TV and artwork heights and coffee table proportions!
