+1 to this list
Two things about this list. First, I like seeing you pay homage to the classics. Second, for recognizing the newer wave; Ruins of Beverast have an impressive catalog. And of course, Ms Swift. Shake it off is some of the most ominous, depressive, yet atmospheric three minutes of BM I believe we'll ever hear.
That Taylor Swift album is very kvlt

My top 10:
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Ulver - Bergtatt
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon
Master's Hammer - Ritual
Tormentor - Anno Domini
Moonsorrow - Jumalten Aika

In no particular order and subject to additions:

Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Thantifaxath - Sacred White Noise
Batushka - Litourgiya
Deathspell Omega - Paracletus
Deathspell Omega - Drought
Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry
Great list. Thantifaxath is a name I am unfamiliar with. I will check them out as soon as I'm done here.
Ulver's Bergtatt, wow! For me, I can't put into words as to why I love it as much as I do. It connects with me, as it does with me many others, on a level that transcends the pleasures of listening to music.
I'm glad to see Uada mentioned. From my perspective, they lack overall recognition, and I also feel them to be underrated in music communities I visit online.
MGLA has become one of my absolute favorite bands. A darkhorse I would throw in if I were to make a list would be Altar of Plagues. Perhaps you're not as fond or familiar of them as I am, but Teethed Glory.. and Mammal are two of their albums that I thoroughly enjoy.
I'm a fan of Mammal. Theethed Glory, not so much.
@@jrodgeauxtigersastrosandsaints
For me, hearing Bergtatt the first time was a revelation. It's the standard I judge almost all other BM acts against.
@@dread-cthulu You know what? I totally agree with you, and I'm able to separate biases aside and say that's hard to argue against, considering the direction the genre has gone. It's the combination of pure emotion and fantastic musicianship that creates the unique and unforgettable atmosphere on this album.
Judging by your roster, I suggest you give Λ S T R Λ (or Astra/astra however you spell it) a shot. I love how they mix the ambient sounds with their unique sound signature. Also, the "dark soviet russian night" vibe the music has really fits black metal, but that's just how I feel lol
Damn, nice list. For myself I'd have to pick

I recommend Alpenpässe by Minenwerfer! One of my favourite albums of all time. Also, knew Peste Noire would be on there I discovered them because of you and now love them so thanks for that
An incredible album! I rarely do a "jaw-dropping" reaction to music, but the first scream in their intro track is definitely the coldest vocal work I've ever heard.

Misthyrming: Alglyemi,
Mgła: Exercise In Futility,

Its been a shit year but im glad UA-cam hasnt completely gone to shit because there's still good channels like yours out there. Thanks for everything man, love your content
I really enjoyed this video! You don't spend too long on each album but still manage to say plenty of noteworthy things about them all and one can tell you are engaged, which makes me feel engaged as well :) Definitely gonna check out Ulver!

Cool list buddy. Always great to see people's takes on a genre. Big Masters Hammer fan here.
Great video, Got into the genre again recently after years of not listening with MGLA and Batuskha and this has been a good video for finding new bands.
I've been getting into black metal this past month and you sir has helped a lot whit this list and other content on you channel
This list should have some Paysage D' Hiver praise tho
thankyou so much for this honestly. I'm currently listening to inhumane minimalism and its insanely good!
I think "Mgla - Exercises in Futility" definitely needs some airtime in a "top 25" discussion. That album is objectively incredible and some of the best insturmental execution in the genre. I enjoyed listening to your list. Some really amazing stuff in there with a nice mix of sounds.
I totally agree.
Age of Excuse is also a really good album, but I think I'd still put EiF above AoE
💯!! - not mentioning them in this conversation is just amateur hour
Although we do have many in common, Transylvania Hunger, and Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk are albums that set the pace and influenced the black metal scene as very few (Deathspell Omega for example) have done. Those deserve to be in the top 10 at least. Anyway keep up the good work🤟
Very happy to see some love for Ulver’s Bergtatt! That’s one of my favorite albums period.
I had never listened to Summoning until I stumbled upon your page. That album is truly interesting and great. Glad I found your page!
Great list PostMan, a lot of 'unexpected' records in here. I have always found it a bit funny that people started hating Varg for talking about 'role-playing' games on his channel, knowing full well he got 'famous' for murdering 'some Guy' in the nineties.. people, am I right?!
Excellent list man!

Wolfheart count as black metal for sure. The band was a fan of Bathory works. In one of those videos, we're Quorthon visits Portugal, you can see a young Fernando Ribeiro, vocalist of Moonspell.

I listen to black metal since the early 90s and still can discover so much music :) I'm used to bands like Bethlehem, Striborg, Graveland, Abigor.... but Summoning is a kind of his own (this music is so cool).
The Ways of Yore is unironically my favorite Burzum album. It was always Filosofem before but TWoY just kept growing and growing, it’s such a beautiful masterpiece
definitely not my favorite, but based af at the same time. I love ways of yore as well, really all of his neofolk albums are fantastic
hvis lyset tar oss!
Holy fuck dude. There is some incredible black metal on here that I've never even heard of. Thanks for making this and showing me some other incredible bands.
Also it wasn't until I saw a interview with Dan Swano that I found out that Jon from Dissection is actually pronounced Yoon. That kind of blew my mind.
Great shout with number 12. One of my absolute favourites. All their records are.
Thank you for introducing me to Human Serpent! These guys are awesome and "Mother of Depression" is an immediate favorite! 🤘
Hi man. Thank You making this video. Because iVe only heard of maybe 3 of these.
And, youre links are so appreciated. Havent listened to a couple because the links werent available but thats ok man. Thank u.
Your description of The Voice of Steel is perfect. That album is monumental in its mastery and glory. Absolutely unrivaled musical genius. The only reason I don’t put it in my top 5 favorite bm albums is cause I actually consider it more of a folk metal album than black metal. By far the greatest folk metal album of all time

I'm just getting back into black metal. Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is still my favorite black metal album of all time and one of my top 10 albums period.
I agree with #1 and exactly what you said about it, great video and great albums !
Bought that Lantlos album today because of your video. Also streamed Summoning for the first time. Fucking epic. I loved every second of it.
Thanks my friend for this list.
Now I've been through your list and ended up buying the albums by The Summoning (already had plans to get this one), Human Serpent, Master's Hammer (had listened to one album of theirs previously, it was ok but not great), Negative Plane, and Diabolical Masquerade. I already have the Deathspell Omega trilogy of albums and I agree they're great.
I'm not a big fan of intense shrillness and noise in BM. I feel myself at home here in Level 4 maximum (in reference to your other video) :)
Master's Hammer- Ritual and Filemnice Occultist are cukt albums, very ahead of their time. Must be listened to carefully.
I already know Der Sturmer is gonna be number 1
Arrogance is gonna be the runner up, I just know it
@@anonymous._.euronymous._.1349 Do you like Der Stürmer? I've been a big fan ever since the release of their 2011 album, Transcendental Racial Idealism. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Transcendental Racial Idealism where Jarl von Hagall's presence became more apparent. I think the Der Stürmer/Auschwitz Symphony Orchestra split was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Hearts Full of Hate. In this song, Jarl addresses the problems of immigrants moving into aryan land. Forces of Tradition is the most moving nsbm song of the 2000s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in nsbm.
Lmfao
Yes hair care video please. Pretty diverse list (and taste) my friend
find somebody that talks about you like Wyatt talks about Summoning Minas Morgul.
i dont have a top five but here are some recs:
1 behemoth-Grom. the most overlooked behemoth album but also one of the best.
2 Flamen-furor Luane. some good medeival black metal
3 lathspell-Torn cold void. a pretty straight forward black metal with a thick sound and a killer bass sound.
4 Whoredom Rife-dommedagskvad. THE best Band out of the norwegian scene in the 2010's. dommedagskvad is a beast of a record. and their spilt with Taake is also very good.
5 Volahn-El tigre del sur. a short ep of a mix of some fish hooky riffs and atmosphereic western music. t
Whoredom Rife ! That’s a great album . Good call there
A lot of my top 10 BM albums are classics everyone already knows, but I would recommend
Dispirit - Enantiodromian Birth
Arizmenda - Within the Vacuum of inifinty
Sale Freux - Subterraneus
Hwwauoch - Into the Labyrinth of Consciousness
Thank you for your well informed and dedication to your channel. I recently subscribed. I very solid and informed compilation. Of course we all know this is largely subjective... a very what’s the greatest fruit an orange or a banana? Comes down to ones subjective taste. That said you have a very well thought out and I like and agree mostly with your taste here. Your call on The Tunnel album was a good one but in that same vain / sound / mood / field we have to include a Ruins Of Beverest in your line-up. 4 of them would all do.
Thx man and keep doing what your doing here. I look forward to more of your posts
ever hear of Sigrblot? they are awesome and the vocals are my favorite, they only have one album and a split with Grand Belials key which is one of my fav BM bands
Hey great video! I was wondering based on your #1 if you have heard/have an opinion of these: Teurgia -- With True Faith and Caladan Brood -- Echoes of Battle. I think neither band has done anything since about 2013 but both of these, especially the latter, have a real medieval/fantasy sound that your #1 here evokes.
i can just recommend diving into the nowadays icelandic black metal scene. beginning with Svartidauði - Flesh Cathedral, that beast of an album that started this new wave, and their second album Revelations of The Red Sword that is a masterpiece in cosmic black art.
Sinmara, Misþyrming, Wormlust, Andavald and Nornahetta are also worth checking out.
For everybody waiting for a new Negative Plane album i highly recommend paying regard to the side project of Bestial Devotion. its called Funereal Presence, and his last Album Achatius is phenomenal! and give Jordablod - Upon my cremation pyre a turn.
an album i just recently discovered is the debut from Forteresse - Métal Noir Québécois. and its just that good!
and if you like black metal with some folk elements check out Negura Bunget - OM.
I gave you a sub and a like for all the links you put in the description for all the bands. Really aoorecuated that.
Very hard to pick but some of my favorites are:
1. Dissection - Storm of the Lights bane
2. Sacramentum - Far away from the sun
3. Abigor - Verwüstung, Nachthymnen, Orkblut
4. Satyricon - Dark medival times
5. Kvist - For Kunsten Maa Vi Evig Vike
and many many others :)
Amazing!
Oh no no! You only get one Abigor album to pick from. If we let you do that, everyone will too.
Liking that Evilfeast album. I need that on vinyl .
Honestly I don't listen to much black metal, but I linseed to Dictus De Nacare recently and loved eveything about it!
Great video. I miss a bit of DSBM. Please check out Lurker of Chalice, Throane.
I love dissection and I was not aware that Jon had other projects! Thanks for introducing me to new stuff man 👊
Escucha el primero de Nifelheim!
Good list. Alot of the bands I have heard of a while ago but never got around to checking them out. Abigor and Summoning, especially. I agree with you on Anaal Nathrakh, but on the Ulver choice im torn between Bergtatt and Nattens Madrigal. I also think Det Som Engang Var is Burzum's best. Here is some of my favorites...
Averse Sefira- Battle's Clarion
Satyricon-Nemesis Divina
Sigh-Scorn Defeat
Absu-Third Storm of Cythraul
Darkthrone-Ravishing Grimness
Gorgoroth-Antichrist
Immortal-Battles In The North
Emperor-Anthems To the Welkin at Dusk
Lord Belial-Enter the Moonlight Gate
Sacramentum-The Coming of Chaos
Enslaved-Frost
Celtic Frost-Morbid Tales
Ved Buens Ende-Written In Waters
Destroyer 666-Phoenix Rising
Dodheimsgard-Monumental Possession
Thorns-Thorns
Bal sagoth- A black moon broods over Lemuria
Burzum-Det Som Engang Var
Ulver-Nattens Madrigal
Anaal Nathrakh-Codex Necro
Murmuüre’s self titled is a really good blending of black metal, synth and avant garde elements.
I've two of your TOP25 and planning to buy your #1. The obscure band, and their sole album that is missing from I think everyone's lists, is Midvinter - At The Sight Of The Apocalypse Dragon. I listen to many kind of metal Black Metal included. But this album is something else. It's like a world all its own, a cosmic epic battle basically and a treatise on metal music in general. It includes many metal subgenres below Black Metal. The production is stellar too. And in places it also has this slight game music vibe that the Summoning has. I think it could be the best metal album out of my collection of maybe 400-500. Very highly recommended.
Some of the black metal albums I love are as follows:
- New Bermuda by Deafheaven (maybe my all-time favourite?)
- Stained Glass Revelations by Negative Plane
- The Pact... by Negative Plane (my black metal co-AOTY)
- The Furnaces of Palingenesia by Deathspell Omega
- Hostile Architecture by Ashenspire (my OTHER black metal AOTY)
- A Blaze in the Northern Sky by Darkthrone
- Litourgiya by Batushka
- In The Nightside Eclipse by Emperor
I'm going to check out that Nokturnal Mortum album you mentioned. I didn't get into those guys for the longest time because of their NS background, but the album you mentioned apparently has no racist lyrics in it, sooooo... maybe I'll just listen to that one here on UA-cam. However, I'll stick with Ungfell for that medieval folk-tinged sound. Too many red flags on that Peste Noire album cover. You are certainly more gutsier than me when it comes to supporting controversial bands! Do what you want, though. As long as it makes YOU happy, that is all that matters, right?
Winterfylleth, Goatmoon, Burzum, Mavorim, thy dying light and Taake would some off my highlight’s. Cool vid stay safe. New sub.
winterfylleth are really underrated in my opinion. the dark hereafter is an amazing record
What are your favorite songs by Winterfylleth?
Top 10 or 15 if you don't mind
Love the ending!
Peste Noir debute has been in my rotation for years now. People can say what they like. I personally can care less.
Burzum is fantastic as well. There is no discussion about vargs contribution. You mentioned some others that I Love too, and some flat out classics.
Nice video, and you did a kick ass job with the description. Your number 1 pick goes back with me so far. Good to see the young blood knowing their shit.
You should also try Moonsorrow, Fintroll and Arkona (Krahm album is really awesome).
Son of Nicolas Cage has (or had) a cool band named "Arsh Anubis". He had another band of symphonic black metal called "Eyes of Noctum", It's pretty sweet.
Great tips! Gnaw their tongues is really interesting. By the way, did u ever listen to Messa? It's a recent Italian band from Venice, a crossover between doom and Jefferson airplane's grace slick maybe... with some Kate Bush.. I mean they are dark and interesting if u have time listen to them, their album Close is really good... look for some live show on UA-cam, live they give their best in my op.
Being a bit of BM newbie, I find myself listening to less traditional BM. As I've mentioned in another comment, I am extremely high on Ulver's Bergtatt. Burzums Filosofem. Dissection- SOTLB is another favorite of mine.
Some of my favorites that either were mentioned or mentioned rarely:
Altar of Plagues - Mammal
Agalloch - The Mantle & AATG
Alcest - Le Secret (EP)
White Ward - Futility Report
Panopticon - Autumn Eternal
And pretty much anything by MGLA, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord, Ruins of Beverast.

Drudkh - Autumn Aurora

Midnight Odyssey's - SOSF & FFTAS
Odraza - Rzeczom

Ulver and The Codex Necro, all the fucking way. Super sick that you're wearing that Portal t-shirt for this one too. I can never really commit to ranking masterpieces above one another so i will just blast a list of other GOATs, in no particularly order and certainly not exhaustive...
