- Black Metal has a lot of subgenres. It's time to rank them!
Of course this is just my opinion so it's fine to disagree. Unless you have a different view on the S tier, then you're out.

I would never expect you to be such a fan of industrial black metal
😂😂 Hahaha.... you fell for it!! You didn't see the video. You skipped to the end! But it shows you kind of know him. Cool.
@@mcalvrd6110 its irony
Atmospheric Black Metal deserves "S". Summoning, Evilfeast, Gallowbraid...Summoning alone already takes the genre to the "S" rank
agree 100%
I very much agree, but it is all personal opinion, personally I’m not a huge fan of raw black metal, but Farvann is
Yeah no worries we all just wanted to point out the impact Summoning have on an entire subgenre. I dont know what subgenre i love the most , preety much everything has something to enjoy. i could go from satanic warmaster to mesarthim or moonlight sorcery and enjoy equally. Lately am stuck with stormkeep's galdrum and the classic vittra from naglfar.
Caladan Brood
@@HandtuchAufDerLiegeImUrlaub I would put Caladan Brood, Firienholt and Can Bardd in the Epic Black Metal subgenre. All of which I like a lot. These are all medieval-sounding and therefore quite "folky", and also atmospheric.
Then you've got bands like Drengskapur, should they be put in the Atmospheric BM pile? If so, there is a huge difference between them and Eldamar, for instance.
"I consider the second wave to be between the first and the the third..."
Farvann became Smartvann ^^
Industrial black metal is also my favorite genre, we have similar tastes!
😂
shuuuuuuree it's every one favourite here....
Aborym..
Mysticum, Thorns, Spektr, Diabolicum, Control Human Delete.
😂😂Hahaha.... you fell !!! You skipped to the end!
progressive black metal is black metal but with band members with music theory haha
nailed it
Don't worry, this wasn't a lazy video. After all, you created the tier list yourself.^^
Final tierlist at: 11:57.
😂
WHAT?! INDUSTRIAL BLACK METAL?
goodbye.
ROKI IS A MEMBER AGAIN
@@Farvann OF COURSE I AM!!!
If NSBM is a sub-genre, then White / Christian Black Metal is also.
And I just discovered there is Muslim Black Metal
ua-cam.com/video/il063QVanCY/v-deo.html
Brother we don't talk about Christian metal. Christian Black Metal is like glam metal. Both are the metal genres retarded cousin.
That’s Unblack Metal, but I agree with you.
Along with RABM, Democratic Black Metal and Ancap Black Metal
What about Antifa Black Metal? And yes, there is 😅 heared a Lot of Songs about killing Nazis and stuff, like "we are more hatefull then them" 😂
I've just started crying at 11:21 lol. This guy never disappoints
Limbonic Art is the epitome of symphonic Black Metal and it's freaking awesome
I still have my 4 disc set I had to special order from a CD store 20yrs ago, lol. Great band 🤘
@@dsbm8781 then you have an absolute treasure in your hands. Last time I looked it up Moon in the scorpio CD was offered for over thousand $
@@TheSerpentKingi got a shirt from the "In Abhorrence Dementia" and a patch from the "Moon in a Scorpio". Absolutely love them :)
@@TheSerpentKingbtw, its kind of a random message, but you should check Profanum - Flowers of our Black Misantrophy. They are kind of similiar artists. When u check on them (maybe) give me some feedback ;p i ve already listened it like 30 times, just like Limbonic back these days
@@TheSerpentKing damn I have that too. It was actually back in 2001. I found Moon in the Scorpio and was hooked. Mine are in rough shape but still play. I could never part with them, mine. 💀
Progressive black metal would be something like enslaved i think. Enslaved is fucking awesome
Enslaved, Orm, Urbain
Exactly
Yeah. I hate Enslaved for that garbage they call black metal these days. :(
@@Mp57navyto be fair, Enslaved haven't refered to themselves as black metal for like 20 years
Exactly what i think. Enslaved is good example.
Their first "Yggdrasill" is worth listening. "Vikingligr Veldi" is my favorite among all albums.
After the «Eld» it was kind of bad, not in my taste mostly, but still some songs are exception. To the point of «Axioma Ethica Odini» it is all was one big experiment. And after (including) Axioma it was great again, reborn to prog black. However, «E» was last thing i liked, not a fan of new stuff.
Paysage d'Hiver could be mentioned as atmospheric black metal
Or Ambient Black Metal.
Or our favorit Industrial Black Metal
90% of the BM that I listen to are Atmo & DSBM.
Good vid as always 🏆
Same
@@Damaged_Justice ABM, DSBM and Kanade enjoyer what a sight.
@@txr_devil lol
I've found your channel like 2 weeks ago as I've been getting into black metal since the past few months and gotta say i focking love it and admire how much value and time you've put into this channel spreading knowledge and sharing laughter with funny videos, which I still havent got tire of watching them over and over. Maybe this comment isn't too blackish but whatever, keep it up bro!
Great list! I would put folk black metal on S because of bands like Moonsorrow and industrial bm on A, I like it, for example bands like Mysticum. And I also think first wave is easy S because of Bathory alone :)
2:34 I know this list is your personal opinion but you only mentioned alcest and put the genre in c cos it was a bit too friendly, thats fair but my bet would be go through Neige's early discog, through early amesoeurs (ruines humaines), Peste Noire and the tristesse hivernale ep and u might change your mind on blackgaze byou know what i mean? but nice vid still as always, love from Australia
i got some good recommendations if u want to rehear blackgaze a bit
Nothing is ever close to the sound of "Gallowbraid - Ashen Eidolon", espcially the middle part "Oak and Aspen". 💕
the first black metal album i got on vinyl
Real Masterpiece. Caladan Brood also very good.
I hadn't listened to "Oak and Aspen" before, so I listened to it now based on your suggestion here, but I don't think it's that great... It has clean vocals, I don't think clean vocals in black metal sound good. If it wouldn't have the clean vocals, I think I would like it.
give the full album a try, it has fantastic screams too@@Tystros
To this day, I'm angry that Gallowbraid and Caladan Brood have not made any more music. Both of those albums are magnificent.
Excelente, compañero. Enhorabuena por la seriedad con la que haces tus vídeos. Saludos del Conde Vasili y los miembros de la redacción de BM plus legions desde Madrid, España. Nos hemos suscrito
Folk: moonsorrow
Moonsorrow could fit in the pagan black metal as well (Amazing band by the way)
@@ahsoka5385 Isn't pagan black metal just blackened folk metal? And why do we considered themes to be genres? If a christian was creating black metal about his religion that sounded exactly like pagan metal, would it be not pagan metal?
Nice video! I was actually kind of surprised that you mentioned Dragged Into Sunlight for Black Crust, because I always considered them to be Black Death Doom Metal (Metal Archives agree in that point). I would still be interested to see your opinion on some Black Sludge bands such as Keeper, Old Witch, Burning Witch and Graves At Sea. But cool that you included it!
Ja, das war ne Verwechslung :D
I fucking love sludge and idk how I've never heard of black sludge (blackened sludge?)
What's the background song? It's absolutely awesome.
EDIT: realized it was your own band all along. Super good stuff.
Pale Swordsman album is kind of Gothic Black Metal, no?
Next video idea. You recommend us 1 or 2 albums/bands from each of the genres you put in the tier list.
Longtime fan, first time commenter. List made me think of one of the few US-BM bands I like because I've long struggled to give it a subgenre label, mixing raw, thrash, sometimes even hints of melodic and lyrical themes of DSBM here and there. Would love your opinion on the band Saidan if by some satanic boon you read this, especially the songs I am the Witch, She's Buried Under the Cherry Blossoms, Girl Hell 1999, or Shrine of the Black Sword.
Dude, there are only TWO Black Metal subgenres: Trve Kvlt and Poser Crap. Having said that, congrats for your excelent taste. Blackgaze is the Trvest Shit.
Farvann are you familiar with Imperium Dekadenz? If so I'm curious how popular they are in your country since they're German. I absolutely love them, but then again I do hold atmo BM as my S tier. Great content as always, thank you!
what do you think about annal nathrakh ?
I recommend you to listen first and second Bal-Sagoth albums. They classified as symphonic black metal. They are very good. With longs songs which are not boring at all.
Balsagoth ís so fucking goofy I love it
Can't stress enough how much I love Bal-Sagoth. Straight up wizard metal
Saw it all but what you did at the end was cool
Symphonic Black Metal: C
Folk/Black Metal: A
NSBM: C (Just want to point out that it is good musically. Just the political lyrics itself are not my cup of tea.)
Pagan Black Metal: B
Blackgaze: B-
Atmospheric Black Metal: A+

Progressive Black Metal: B-
DSBM: B-?
Avant-Garde Black Metal: C- (Way too much experimental stuff isn't my thing.)

Industrial Black Metal: B
What's not on the list in that video that I'm gonna rank.
Christian Black (a.k.a. Unblack) Metal: C (Religious me back then would've ranked that S tier. LOL.)
RABM: B-
NSBM maybe have great bands but because of the political aspect it is for me a no go. I dont want to support this type of thinking!
Love NSBM🤘🖤🔥
I'm not super well versed in Black Metal, have only listened to like less than ten bands, buy really enjoyed watching this video
Would love to see you do this for my fav metal subgenre: death metal!
That's a great idea!
He could rank all 2 of the Death Metal subgenres ('Progressive Death Metal' and 'Death Metal') and the video wouldn't have to take up very much of anyone's time!
It could be made AND viewed really quick!
Brilliant!
3:50 enslaved...
ah, they’re super great. love them a lot.
Have you listened to Grabgesang - Of Medieval Graveyard Frost? It’s very good sounds like darkthrone with a bit of immortal I think.
This list is pretty accurate actually by the way keep up the good work Farvann Love from Canada 🇨🇦💀🔥⛪️🔥
Hi farvann
What about cosmic black metal? Do you like it?
Agalloch, in my opinion, fits the definition of black metal folk. By the way, what song is playing at the end?
Durbatuluk - Seelenwanderung
@@Farvann thanks
Agalloch, is great. Pillorian too.
Bro, epic black metal is SUMMONING!
Skip to the ending newcomers, the results are astonishing.
Melodic Black Metal is S Tier 100% Dissection alone carries that torch, Vinterland, Dawn, just so many bands from 93 - 97 that made Melo Black the best genre of Black metal imo. Then you had Abigor, Blut Aus Nord, Gehenna, Keep of Kalessin, Lord Belial moving in with the Atmospheric/Melodic era, which was INCREDIBLE.
For me S tiers are, 2nd Wave 88-93 ( Morbid, Bathory, Darkthrone)
Melodic Black 93 - 97 (Dissection, Vinterland, Keep of Kalessin, Windir)
Atmospheric Black 93 - 97 (Abigor, Burzum, Blut Aus Nord, Ancient Wisdom)
Farvann, can you make the list of best bands from A and B for pioneers of BM ?
I feel like I really found myself when I first discovered blackgaze. It was like my whole personality and feelings were combined into one with the style. I still listen to it, but as I'm getting older and more conservative, I'm mostly at home with 2nd wave BM.
conservative boo
After listening to black metal for about 20 years now, and more recently focusing on "true" (raw, old school, 2nd wave originators, vampyric, etc), I've come to love many of the early demos that I used to think were too raw and primitive to be enjoyable. I love early raw Darkthrone, Beherit, Ildjarn demos now. What releases would you consider to raw to be listenable?
what the fuck is vampyric black metal?
It's quite fun with the sub-genres because to me for example Darkthrone and Burzum sound nothing like each other but belong to the same sub-genre, and there a lot of the newer bands that sounds basicly the same but is not grouped together, some are atmospheric, some are ambient etc.
Call of the Wretched Sea is awesome! Ahab's newest is also very good, but not as good. Cheers!
Have you ever listened to Psyclon Nine? Not their industrial era, but metal albums. We the fallen, Order of the shadow or Icon of the adversary?
Hi Farvann! I recommend this Romanian black metal band called Ordinul Negru. They are pretty underrated.
There is another subgenre of black metal worth mentioned in here - blackened hardcore, sometimes also called as dark hardcore. Bands like Deluge, Oathbraker, Supruga, Volan and so on.
Dragged Into Sunlight has nothing from crust BTW :) For Blackened Crush you better go for Iskra and Martyrdod
Ok, there you go my tier list:
S: atmospheric black metal; black thrash metal; melodic black metal; viking metal; black/death metal;
A: dsbm; symphonic black metal; black doom; raw black metal;
B: folk black metal; black'n'roll; gothic black metal; industrial black metal;
C: post-black metal; blackened crust;
D: blackgaze; progressive black metal; ambient black metal;
E(not F): avant-garde black metal;
Other genres I don't consider genres but terms for classification of age or lyrics, or something else, it doesn't influences the sound
new farvann and oh what a great video
Can you guys give me some examples of melodic black metal bands i could listen to? That would be awesome thanks!
What's that symphonic black metal band that you mentioned besides Anorexia Nervosa?
Pantheion
My band is melodic black death with influence from other genres (namely doom on the first album and thrash on the second album) with raw-ish production.
So hard to tell whether Farvann would like it (probably) but as he says, only thing that matters is whether I like it.
Should have put NSBM into extra SS tier lol
Also you forgot RABM, but propably same as other lyrical based definitons
Nice video nontheless!
🤣🤣
You are fucking wonderful! That was very enjoyable. 🤘🏽
Symphonic black is dimmu borgir, cradle of flirth and other famous black metal bands with Keyboard influences.
Dimmu Borgir is Pop Black Metal 🥴
@@Farvann passt.
Thorns from Norway are considered Industrial Black Metal. I personally would also consider "Rebel Extravaganza" and "Volcano" by Satyricon industrial black metal albums. But the masters of this disguise are Anaal Nathrakh from UK in my humble opinion. They all manage to still sound very organic to me.
Whatever you consider to be outside your favorite taste will be defended by a frenetic supporter.
Under the sign of "progressive black metal" I would place "Ne Obliviscaris"...
Please do more subgenre tier lists
Borgne is a brilliant black industrial band.
So is Ufferndaith but they/he has only released one EP and that was back in 2020. He plays guitar in some indie rock band now which takes up most his music time.
What is the song playing around 9:00? Danke im Voraus Farvann!
Durbatuluk - Die Hexe
love melodic black metal, bands like vinterland and stormkeep are incredible
also Rites to Sedition, absolutely insane riffs
Melechesh too
Add bands like Véhémence, Passéisme, Darkenhöld, Sühnopfer, Aorlhac to the list... One of my favorite subgenres.
véhémence is one of my favorite bands right now, i cant get enough of their sound
I have very similar taste thx for vid, never heard of some of this genres ;D
Haha, great ending.
There was one industrial Black metal album from 2000 or 2001 that was insanely good called Thorns' self titled. But for the rest never heard other good stuff in that genre.
Did you see the whole video?
@@mcalvrd6110 yeah, industrial bm is F tier.
Thank you for mentioning Thorns. That self-titled album is the perfect example how amazing Industrial Black Metal can actually be. Farvann should rethink his choice, instead of celebrating embarassing Rammstein..
well done farvann 😊
Meloblack is pretty nice, Sacramentum's second album and Wintersun's first album are my go to.
Agalloch is top tier in meloblack for me.
I got confused at 11:28 ;-( Great video! But I skipped some parts....
The taake song u were thinking of is Myr
It has folk elements with the banjo but I wouldn’t go as far as to call it folk black metal
Still traditional black metal haha
And yes Viking metal is a black metal subgenre I’m not sure if these bands count but I would say bands that are Viking metal are bands like Falkenbach, King of Asgard, Helheim, ect
Btw if you like melodic black metal you should really check out Evil Summons Evil by Deviser, such a good album
Love ya farvann stay safe brother 😎🤘🏻
Where would you rate Hellenic Black Metal? I know that comprises only a handful of bands but that is its own sound
Like Rotting Christ?
Yeah, Rotting Christ, Varathron, Necromantia, Nergal, etc@@nicola6323
Try the one man band Lord Agheros
What he is saying: Blackgaze
What youtube subtitles say: *Black gays*
also what about native american black metal just wondering what you think
What is the song in the back ground???
All taken from the album "Erzähle, Baba Jaga" by Durbatuluk
Meloblack genre is my most favorite one, mostly cuz of Stormruler s Sacred Rites and Black Magick
haven't been a huge black metal head, but I've always gravitated to band's debut albums because there just more raw. slipknot, slayer, sodom, avenged sevenfold, kreator, all there debuts are just so raw and I love it
Where is Space / Cosmic Black Metal?
Darkspace 3.11
Oh, never heard. I'm new to BM, and then I love HAWKWIND.... who would be in Cosmic/Space Black Metal ? Bands?
Is it not atmo black?
@@mcalvrd6110 try Darkspace, Mesarthim, Mare Cognitum,
@@thebradester7828 Yes, but no
The black metal sub-genres that I mostly listen to are DSBM, second wave, atmospheric, melodic and ambient black metal. My favorite black metal bands are: Aara, Der Weg einer Freiheit, Darkspace, Vardan, Gorgoroth, Burzum, Cold World, Apati and Windir.
And yet Windir is another sub genre - Sognametal.
I don't like depressive, ambient, or atmospheric black metal all that much, but there are some good bands.
Aara is great btw
are you concidering imortal to be blackend death i always thought they were war black metal but i dont find them to be death at all i could be wrong
immortal has many death metal sounds and riffs. its like darkthone death metal on steroids.
prog bm would be something like Shining, Enslaved, and non opus dei i think.
blackgaze are dudes that black metalists prefer to kill with a knife ?
What is the song played in the outro? That sounds really good
Durbatuluk - Seelenwanderung
@@Farvann I had a feeling it was your band. I've been meaning to check it out but just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Thanks for letting me know which song though, I'm gonna put it on right now.
And if you wanna check out some stuff that I have been involved in, I think I have some videos on my profile. Best way I can describe it is like a fusion of 2nd wave Norwegian and Swedish black metal.
I think Akerocke falls into the Progressive Black Metal category. For Second Wave Black Metal I also have to name drop Setherial, worth checking out. With a band like Mysticum out there, I am surprised why you would hate on industrial black metal, In the Streams of Inferno is a great album.
which is the first song from background?
Durbatuluk - Сквозь дремучий лес
What's the song running behind called?
Several songs from the album "Erzähle, Baba Jaga"
What songs are you using in video?
All songs are from the latest Durbatuluk album
What bands are third wave black metal?

To a lot of people, second wave black metal *is* black metal. Easiest S-tier there's ever been
Pagan black metal is S-tier solely for Aaskereia. Other than that, I mostly agree.
