    Personally, my ears don't cotton to high-speed shredding, and the Rabin era was not a high point for me when it comes to appreciation of the music produced by Yes. Steve Howe is the man. His playing was distinctive and reliant more upon melody and inventive guitar runs which melded beautifully with the song being played by the band. Rabin was always more like "Look at me, I'm soloing".
    Having said that, it is pretty clear that Rabin was a prodigy and musical genius, giving Yes it's most popular era and eventually giving in to Yes' prog leaning with the "Talk" album before exiting the band. Last time I checked, he went on to compose the scores for over 40 movies, some of them Hollywood blockbusters. But I guess he still missed performing onstage and came back to the progressive rock world when he toured with Anderson and Wakeman as "ARW" in 2016.

      Trevor is friends with Rick Wakeman, and had said several times he was sorry he never got to play with him again, in a five-piece Yes, following the Union tour they were both part of. I believe ARW had a lot to do with that, as well as that Jon Anderson was pissed off about being removed from the band, and it was his, "Oh yeah? I'll show you guys," moment. There's no doubt, he was more of a flashy, FM rock guy than Howe. Still, he's also a very good rhythm and acoustic player, and has more depth to what he does than a lot of guys from that era. He and Chris got on well personally, I think better than Chris did with Steve, and much of "Yes West" was founded on their collaboration. Push come to shove, I don't think Trevor is a band guy at heart, prefers writing and playing everything himself, as he does on his solo albums and soundtrack work. I would bet that's why we never got any new material from ARW, Trev got all fired up to do another solo album, and went and did that instead.

      My sentiments exactly, melody before speed for me. Ritchie Blackmore was often all about speed live in the early Purple days. But with Blackmore's Night he concentrates on melody which I like much better.

    Saw the Union tour in Philly back in this era. One of the best shows I've ever seen as a total band performance. Highlight for me in guitar aspect of the show was when Trevor and Steve did an acoustic guitar duel. It was epic by both players. Being a long time Howe fan, I actually was surprised and thought Trevor on the acoustic that night shined a little more. I can't compare this video to Ed for the same reasons other folks have already posted. Trevor's awesome, but to my preference, I find Ed's solos more melodic when compared to this particular video. Thanks for sharing the clip.

    There are many other guitar shredders like Rabin/EVHs out there, but there is only one who creates and plays like Steve Howe. A true master of the craft, winning Best Overall Guitarist FIVE years straight in Guitar Player magazine. Such a talent that perfectly fit in with the other musical masters of 70's Yes. You want to hear an incredible guitar album? - listen to Relayer or even The Yes Album.

    Trevor is a superb guitarist and musician in general. What he did with Yes was brilliant to say the least. I was fortunate enough to see the Union tour and everyone on that stage got to showcase. It looked like the Mount Olympus of musicians. But as far as guitar gymnastics goes, Trevor's gonna be wedged in with a pretty hefty crowd of equals. As much as I still love "shredding" to this day, it really has been done to death. Tbh, the reason Eddie gets the extra praise and exposure is not just because he started that whole craze, but NOBODY sounded like him.

    I loved the Trevor era of YES because 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' was my introduction to them, and being a massive Rush fan, I immediately took a liking to it. That said, I have never once thought of Trevor and shredding in the same conversation. It's not his discipline, and when I listened to this solo it struck me as someone playing a lot of chords and notes, but none of them really landing or amounting to much.
    That isn't to say I don't like a good shred, I am a child of the 70s after all and so I grew up on the rock/metal guitar Gods of the 70s and 80s. When you listen to Jimmy Page or Alex Lifeson, you immediately know it's them, but it they were to have done the shredding stuff it would have sounded off. To me there has to be more than just speed for speed's sake.
    One of my favorite guitarists is Paul Gilbert, and my introduction to him was with Racer X, but I almost never listen to his Racer X or old shred material. Rather, I love the incarnation of Paul Gilbert that developed with Mr. Big, because you got a touch of the speed but blended into songs with vocal harmonies, melody, and a great rhythm section in Torpey and Sheehan. Same with a Ritchie Kozen, absolutely love his playing and singing, but I never listen to his earliest shred adjacent stuff because that's just not who he is as a writer, a singer and a player.
    I could ramble on, but shredding notes absent any kind of overall song, reprise, or melody is boring to my ears. It becomes white noise. Young, unrefined me loved the raw speed. However, by my late teens and early 20s, my tastes had developed to a point where my mindset was "Okay, the speed's nice, but where are we going with this?" in terms of the song. I prefer my "shreds" to be moments of flourishes and embellishments during a song or as an aspect OF the solo, but not to be THE solo.
    I think Trevor is an amazing musician, and certainly it's a bit interesting to hear that solo, but tonally and musically that's not him. It would be like hearing a Stevie Ray Vaughan shred solo, I would want to hear it at least once out of curiosity, but that would be the extent of it. :)

    The answer to your question is a resounding no! Trevor Rabin is an extremely talented person. There is no question about that, but he played a lot of scales, some tapping, and a scant few tricks.
    Trevor Rabin plays guitar.
    Eddie Van Halen was the guitar.

    Israel is so strong because EVERY citizen, when they reach the age, MUST enlist in the army. My best friend's mother was trained as a marksman and paratrooper! Trevor took his guitar with him into the army and airbrushed all of the designs on it. He is playing that same guitar in this clip. Whilst he resided in South Africa, he was a member of the "Boy Band" RABBIT. His son is the drummer of GROUPLOVE.
    Trevor gave guitar lessons to Steven Segal. In return, Steven let him do the soundtrack for his film, "The Glimmer Man." Trevor has since made a career scoring Hollywood films, including: ARMAGEDDON, Remember the Titans, Enemy of State, National Treasure, Snakes on a Plane and more!

    If memory serves me correctly, VH 1 was released in 1978. That was waaaaaay before this video in 1994. Eddie was the creator/ inventor/ pioneer of hard rock guitarist. Everyone wanted to be Ed. While Trevor is very talented, more than likely he got his ideas from the master. You can plainly see that. And yes I realize other guitarist get their ideas from previous guitarists ahead of them. It's the evolution of guitar. That's how it works. But Eddie will always be the King.

    Trevor was a beast and one of my all time favorite guitarists, but he’s not Eddie. EVH was all about tone, harmonics, and his solos were as well crafted as the songs. But if you ask me, Trevor easily blew Steve Howe off the stage!

  • @theAsterisk
    @theAsterisk 7 місяців тому

    As long as we're electing for a comparison to EVH . . . I maintain that Rabin is a more interesting pianist than he is a guitarist- and that's not a knock on his guitar chops.
    Are you familiar with his solo album "Jacaranda"? If not, it's well worth a listen- instrumental, and quite of bit of it not so typical of his guitar style while in Yes. Relevant to my contention about his skills on piano, though, give some attention to the track "Killarney 1 & 2".

  • @charlesgates4387
    @charlesgates4387 7 місяців тому

    I think a lot of people are missing the point here. The idea of the video is the question whether or not Trevor Raven is out shredding EVH not whether or not they were more influential on guitar, or whether you like them or not. The question becomes... Which one of these two guys is playing the more technically difficult part? I'm a basist so it would be a difficult thing for me to answer definitively. I will say they both have chops and I enjoyed both of what they had to say on guitar. Eddie, and I'm a big Yes fan, had a touch more feel.
    No disrespect to these killers, Guthrie Govan will out chop them all...man can play anything..so good it makes me angry. Effortless.
    Sorry, now I've lost the point of the video...😊

    Kinda sounds like a lot of other 90’s guitarists who thought speed should outweigh precision and melody. Maybe next time pick an 80’s guitarist like say Rik Emmett from Triumph who was more interested in precision and melody. Then you’d have something to actually compare EvH to. But this solo is a mess and not very cohesive.
