Thanks for the review JH! We are fans and cherish your feedback. It’s common for people to compare and “contrast” with Speedpaint. However it’s actually a pretty unique formulation. Yes, it can be deactivated, which is why we recommend a clear coat and if you plan to highlight on top. The chemical make up that allows for the reactivation to happen is actually what helps to prevent tide marks and coffee stains.

      Thanks for that!
I agree actually, the main issue is people are comparing them to Contrast Paints when THEY ARE VERY DIFFERENT!
I think we need to embrace and understand that so we can inform ourselves and others so they can be sure they are buying the CORRECT product for their needs. There's nothing worse than buying something and feel you have thrown your money away.
I really appreciate you answering guys and I will pin this so everyone can see this comment.

Hate to say this because I almost never used Contract Paints, but I started subscribing about 2 months ago in anticipation of THIS SPECIFIC video because the thought of a 1 coat paint seemed so great to me. While I waited for this video, I decided to watch the already posted content. I learned quite a bit and I have already added a few Contrast Paints to my paint racks. I am still debating buying the Speedpaints but at least now I am far better informed.

another great review. It really is more helpful to speak about those issues to know what these paints are and what they are not, and avoid the hype train that only brings disappointment and fanaticism. Some people will probably get more views with clickbait titles like "Speedpaints, the Contrast killer" or "Speedpaints: they are trash!", but honest content yours will prevail in the long run.

This is an amazing review Juan. A lot of the reviews are just simply "first layer vs. first layer". You went well beyond that. I think I'll be sticking to my overpriced GW Contrast for now. Maybe I'll pick up the Speed Paints for my kids though.

Thank you for the thorough and most of all HONEST review! The re-activation aspect changes everything, and while it can be dealt with layers of varnish in between, the hassle will be tremendous. Could you please do a test for lightfastness? Im afraid that if they are similar to Dr Ph. Martin's as I suspect, they will fade extremely easy. I have also to say that Im extremely angry. The product is what it is, but NO OTHER reviewer, in those months that they are pestering us with video after video mentioned that they re-activate.

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures In the pre-social media days, the magazine and big web site editors were always accused for corruption. And it was true. Being a graphic designer I've seen more than enough advertorials masked as ''honest personal opinions''. Many of these people were getting ''incentives'' in the form of gifts, free vacations or even hard cash. With the decline of the established print publications and the advent of social media where everyone had a voice, we were fooled to believe that this new system would be uncorruptable because of the multitude of independant reviewers. Well it seems that human nature got busy. The majority of all these ''reviewers'' and ''influencers'' are not only as corrupted as the pro journalists/editors, but they are doing it for cheap also. They will say anything for 5 pots of color or a box of plastic that costs to the corporations less than a fiver. The most ironic fact is that Army Painter themselves admit these negative characteristics in at least one of their videos. The ''reviewers'' turned to be more royalists than the King himself. What a bunch of ass wipers....

    • @elbitxo5945
      @elbitxo5945 2 роки тому +4

I've seen many other reviews reporting the reactivation issue during the last few weeks, you have to order the videos by date, instead relevance selected by the youtube algorithm. Just to name a few Watch It Paint (the multiple coats issue and when trying washes), Stahly (Tale of Painters, pointing that as a serious issue this week)... even big ones like Squidmar talked briefly about the issue more than a month ago and gave them a mixed review, and Squidmar made a follow up video two weeks ago informing of the issue after initial super positive review.
Talking about dishonesty of reviewers... well, those do exist and maybe a few of them noticed the issue and didn't want to talk about it because interests. Some others most probably didn't experiment enough with the paints to identify any problem, but many of them were talking about the issue, not only in video reviews but in forums, also. I've known about the reactivation since I watched a review that experienced that issue many weeks ago, went to reddit, and people were talking about it and the varnish coat solution. Maybe it's because that I'm a little bit surprised by the negative feedback of the last few days, considering it's a problem known by enthusiasts even before commercial release. I think many people got hyped because the initial great feedback + the lower cost, but these paints are not "cheaper Contrast", and they don't do the advanced techniques people discover Contrast do great during the last 2 years. Speedpaints look great to paint huge amount of minis at tabletop/high-tabletop quality standard, but apparently the very same component that makes them less patchy than Contrast and makes most darker colors more interesting, is responsable of the reactivation issue.
Right now it just comes to what do you want your paints for, but probably some people will find new creative uses for Speedpaints like they did with Contrast (I remember the really bad initial feedback Contrast got when people were trying "one thick coat" only, before starting to try airbrush, zenithal priming or glazing with medium). For starters, Speedpaints are being reported as better for mixing and achieving new colors while keeping their properties than Contrast, including things like chromatic blacks. Patience. Are these paints perfect or what hyped people fantasize with? probably not, but they are what they are being advertised for sure, let's see if they offer more interesting uses during the next months.
Don't jump into the hype train, people, it just creates fanaticism and disappointment.

@@ironheadedDoF shades are still good for actually shading however. if you want to glaze in shadows and that kind of thing, shade paints are great for this.
for a wash though, contrast is way better when diluted with contrast medium. it's also better for regular glazing I think. I do think shade paints still have their use though for adding depth in shadows.

I'm really glad I found out about this, means I can use Speed Paint more appropriately for my needs. On expensive models, I tend to use contrast as an initial base + highlight, then build up from there with other washes, drybrushing and highlighting. So knowing that this could have easily ruined expensive models or made my life really hard is a god send. Thank you so much for this!
How the hell did all the positive reviews and praise I saw from everywhere else miss this incredibly simple thing? Especially from the "This will easily replace contrast and for cheaper" lot, when it clearly can't replace what contrast does after all.

You are one of the people i most wanted to review these, and i was right on wishing it! This is a very important thing to know for many paintjobs! In my mind this does NOT diminish their value, which is to crank out decently painted armies really quickly, but it does mean that if you want to replace Contrast with these (because of cost, ethics or whatever) you'll have to have this in mind in your workflow.

This is interesting. As I will do everything in my power to get miniatures on the board faster I can see myself painting one layer with Speedpaint, then varnishing and moving onto the next models. Then when I have spare time, I can take the most important of those miniatures, and take them to the next level with highlight + a new layer of varnish. So actually, I kinda see this as a good thing. I usually spend 80% of my time highlighting when I should just focus on getting miniatures on the table :D

Great review! I was actually happy to see the paint reactivate. I see two helpful things out of this "OOPS" moment. First off, fixing stray or errant brushstrokes without having to spot primer. The second is the subtractive method of making highlights could be far more subtle and controlled. The third that I just thought of is how it could reactivate and wet blend with another color. Hmmm, things for me to experiment with...

At first, I was super excited about getting my hands on this set, and it was coming out right on my B-day. After seeing this video and a few others point out the reactivation of the paint, either by water, paint, medium, etc. I'm not 100% sold on this product v.s. what I currently have and use sadly. The price point was the main pro, but with the headache of using these. Not sure it is worth it.

I'm glad I watched this video! Glad you made it! The reactivating of the paint is definitely something I wouldn't have anticipated. That said, I think it might make speed painting an army a little easier as you could "highlight" by removing some of the paint on the edges and raised parts. Almost like using watercolors. I'm curious if the paint reactivating would be a problem with simple edge highlights or drybrushing as there's not as much moisture involved. Either way, with several hundred orks to paint, these seem to look better with the single coat than contrast paints and don't seem as fiddly. It would still be quicker to single coat and then airbrush on varnish than to use other methods for mass army painting.

    • @JuanHidalgoMiniatures

Happy to help, and yeah simple edge highlights would be ok.bits techniques like glazing that would cause havoc here.

Thanks for the review. Also thanks @ the Army painter guys for accepting your feedback and explaining why it does what it does. While I love the richness of some of the colours (like the red) I don't think they're for me and the way I paint things. I think I'll stick to my conttrast paints for now. And that's a good thing, because we have choice, we're not stuck to one particular brand of paints.

I'm ambivilent, I don't use either much, and believe it or not my favorite Contrast paint is Contrast Medium, because I can mix whatever I want with it :) Also, hey, we're all buying paint that is super expensive, so that Speed Paint already comes in dropper bottles is a weird plus, too. Great review and presentation. Interesting that they appear to be formulated to be used alone. I almost never apply a paint of any kind by itself, so that is a barrier to acquiring any Speed Paints. Maybe I could use them on wrapped handles or other smaller details as a one-and-done solution. Thank you for your honest review and your amazing videos, you are not only a great painter, but also an amazing content creator.
I've seen many other reviews reporting the reactivation issue during the last few weeks, and all of them have comments of people saying it's the only one telling that xD
To be true, I've known about the reactivation since I watched a review that experienced that issue many weeks ago, went to the reddit conversation, and people were talking about that and the varnish coat solution. For example, Watch It Paint It got awful results when using shade wash because reactivation (he didn't really know why at that moment) and talked about the reactivation issue in his video about multiple coats almost month ago, Squidmar briefly talked about the reactivation and some other issues in his review, more than a month ago AFAIR, and Goobertown informed about the reactivation issue in a follow up video a couple of weeks ago, trying brush on varnish and not having any issues.
Well, I think it comes to what you want to use the paints for, and if you want to use advanced techniques, Speedpaints are a bit messy and you will probably want to stick to Contrast. Many people will feel disappointed because they are hyped by the great initial feedback, but these paints look amazing to paint huge amounts of miniatures with tabletop / high-tabletop quality standard, just basecoat + drybrush or highlighting, like many people are using Contrast for. To me most Speedpaints darker colors look better and less patchy than Contrast, and it's apparently because the very same component that causes the reactivation. Bummer.
I think I will use a combination of both lines to paint the grey hordes because I don't even consider glazing for those, and will stick to regular paints and techniques for the best miniatures I want to expend many hours painting. It's a shame, I really wanted to get just Speedpaints because they mix better than Contrast to achieve new colors and are considerable cheaper, but there are many advanced things you can't do, and some of the colors look just better on the Citadel line.

My biggest concern is that the initial set of reviews pre sales never mentioned this issue and a lot of people have ordered them due to those overly hyped reviews and are now finding out these issue.
I really cannot understand how this wasn't highlighted as much as it should and not just randomly mentioned, I saw this in action when I was painting the squig and immediately I knew I needed to find out what was happening.
As content creators and as people with a voice and influence in the community is our DUTY to ensure when we make a review that anyone buying the product knows 100% all the caveats and issues said product can cause. It's very irresponsible not to highlight this issues with the importance that they deserve because you are essentially playing with people's money and you will cause more damage to the brand in the long run if you just create a bunch of dissatisfied customers.
Informing the viewers well, is a must to make everyone that want said product happy and also ensure their painting experience is as good as possible.

I've tried to expose my opinion as clear as possible, it's a little bit difficult writing it in English but yes, hype and preorders are big enemies of consumers (it happens many times, with other hobbies like board games and videogames also), it's better to not get carried by the hype train. The product doesn't seem bad at all, it looks pretty amazing for the thing it does IMO, but because some overly positive early reviews many people feel now disappointed it isn't "cheaper contrast". Those may have gotten many early views, but concern and honest content gets you loyal audience.

Also Overhyping something just because: GW eViL wAtCh mY vIdEo, is very dangerous.
You are just hurting the brand in them long term. It's better not to make a sale than to make it and the client feel misguided or cheated.
Gracias de nuevo, creeme, el primero estaba bien 😘

It does make a difference, whether you like that difference or not, that's another thing entirely

How easy do there reactivate? Would sweaty hands be enough for the paint to smudge or is it specifically water that does this?

Sweat will do it for sure, ALWAYS varnish over them but to be fair that also applies to all miniatures intended for gaming

After talking with Army Painter at LVO when they had a public try out booth available, they know about the reactivation and consider it a feature, not a bug.

I understand what they are going for but I don't agree here. To me it's a bug for how I paint, BUT for someone that looks for a one coat solution, this is not necessarily an issue.
The problem comes when people buy them thinking they are one thing and then realize they are most definitely not that thing. Most important thing is to inform the viewers so they know what they are buying.

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures - They mentioned it makes it easier to blend two colors, even after they've dried, eliminating some of the difficulties with wet blending. They also mentioned that if you're painting in a large batch or on a large model and have to stop, you can more easily blend the lines between the previously dried paint and the new application. I did some minor blending between colors when I tried it out myself, but didn't make note of anything being wet or dry when I did so. Just something to consider as well.

We would VERY MUCH like to watch you make an "Easy Contrast" video using these. (and only these, with acrylic highlights). Going all the way using just these to achieve that high level you always get with Contrasts, blending, mixing colors and feathering transitions, we would like to see how you deal the re-activation, if it happens at all. You are now our highest inspiration, main reference and favorite youtube channel for painting. The level of detail and tones you use, look like official box art and trailers.
Me and my girlfriend play a lot of Warhammer Underworlds and your videos inspire us to paint them just like that using these kind of paints, but we don't have Citadel Contrast paints available here in Brazil.. but what we DID managed to get was a Speedpaint Starter Kit and we are in love with it! We are doing lots of tests on proxies before getting serious on our Warhammer models, but we are already convinced it was worth it (even with this re-activation issue, these paints are still incredibly useful). We're getting the Mega Set next month for sure.
Thank you so much for your videos, it has been extremely, extremely helpful.
